FCP 6 performance slow

I am pretty new to FCP, so I have been dealing with a lot of issues. Basically, I am running through the tutorial DVD and trying to work along with it. I can't seem to get real time playback, as FCP gives me the "Warning - Dropped Frames" dialog. I have a Mac Pro 2.8 8-core with 6GB of RAM, a 300gig stock hard drive and another 250 gig hard drive, with two ATI Radeon HD 2600 cards. I know I got the basic Mac Pro, but what kind of machine do you need to get the performance the dude in the tutorial video is getting? Am I doing something wrong, or is that just all I can expect out of this machine?

Hi David, thanks for helping. First off, I am not using any tutorial footage, I am just watching tutorials on the DVD that came with FC Studio. I am using my own footage. When I first started, I didn't know about FCP editing codec, so I couldn't even watch my footage in the player without it dropping frames because the footage was from iMovie's .dv codec. So I converted to "DV/DVCPRO - NTSC" with Quicktime, which played very smoothly when bringing into FCP. So I thought I was set. Did a little basic editing and it seemed to work. But now I'm trying to do the scaled second video layer (like a picture-in-picture) from the tutorial, and my machine drops frames. What am I doing wrong?

  • FCP working slower on newer Mac

Recently upgreded from an old G5 Power PC to a 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5.
I am working in FCP 6.0.6 and it is actually working slower. I am getting pinwheels before playback that I never got before. Is there a setting I can adjust? Seems crazy that a hardware upgrade should set me back.
    Thanks!
    Scott

There are a lot of variables that go in to fcp performance and it's hard to diagnose problems from a distance.  When I upgraded from my dual 2.5 gig g5 to a macpro a year and a half ago, I saw a big improvement in performance.
Have you tried deleting your fcp preferences?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2491
Tried creating a new user (systempreferences:  accounts).
Do you have any peripherals connected besides a keyboard and mouse?  If so, try and disconnect them.

  • Does FCP perform better than adobe premiere elements on a MacBook Pro?

does FCP perform better than adobe premiere elements on a MacBook Pro?
    Background:
    * just trying to decide what to go for re video editing app with more features than iMovie
    * last time I'd tried Adobe Premiere Elements on my MacBook (but it was before I had an SSD) the performance was not good - it was sluggish to the point I really didn't want to use it
    * so this question is just about whether in general FCP X performs better on a Mac (you'd think it would no, as it's made/optimized for a Mac)
    My MacBook:
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Elements is essentially an amateur app and Premiere a professional one similar to the discontinued Final Cut Pro 7.
FCP X is a radical new approach to editing which like Marmite, you either love or hate.
It is probably between the 2 in capabitlity but much closer to Premiere.
Some might say it was better than Premiere, whilst other long standing broadcast editors would disagree.
It all depends on your standpoint and I am trying to give an unbiased appraisal.
Some of the techniques it uses are way ahead of all other apps and this is what worries people who have an established way of working, though as I mentioned in another post, there are a few omissions which have upset those editors.
Some might say (echoes of Jeremy Clarkson) that FCP X is the most advanced editing app on the planet albeit with a few teething troubles.

  • Query performance slow

    Hi Experts,
    Please clarify my doubts.
    1. How can we know the particular query performance slow in all?
    2. How can we define a cell in BEx?
    3. Info cube is info provider, Info Object is not Info Provider why?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    1. How can we know the particular query performance slow in all?
When you run the query it's take more time we know that query is taken more if where that query is taking more time you can collect the statics.
like Selct your cube and set BI statics check box after that it will give the all statics data regarding your query.
DB time (Data based time),Frent end Time (Query), Agrreation time like etc. based on that we go for the perfomance aggreations, compresion, indexes etc.
    2. How can we define a cell in BEx?
In Your Bex query your using two structures it's enabled. If you want create the different formulate by row wise you go for this.
    3. Info cube is info provider, Info Object is not Info Provider why?
        Info object also info provider,
when your info object also you can convert into info provider using " Convert as data target".

  • IMac OS X performing slow/hangs

My iMac system is performing slower than expected and often hangs. I often wait up to a minute for the next action to happen, while the little cursor sits and spins. What to do? Frustrating.
    System specs that seem pertinent:
4G memory (2 slots taken; 2 slots free)
storage report says 176G free out of 499G
    OS X, 10.8.2
    Thanks, Apple community.

Most often this indicates you are running to many applications concurrently for the amount of physical RAM you have installed. It may also mean you have a crashed process:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
While Activity Monitor is open click on the System Memory tab in the bottom portion of the AM window. Use COMMAND-SHIFT-4, use the crosshairs to select this portion of the AM window, then use the Camera icon of this message composition window to post the image here.

  • What is wrong with my setup? FCP 6 slow as snail.

I have been going nuts trying to troubleshoot what's going on with my system for a while without understanding what's wrong.
I am editing some HDV footage and all is well the first hour of editing. After that the system becomes so slow that clicking anywhere in the timeline takes the slider 10 to 30 seconds to react, not to mention playback just halts. I do not have the spinning ball, I can move the mouse but I cannot do anything with it (nor acess dock or finder when this happens). The system goes so slow that it basically is impossible to continue working on it. Not even a full reboot of the Imac gets the speed up.
About a month ago I bought myself an Imac 2.8 extreme, 3 gigs Ram and 500 gb internal disc, to be able to edit HDV footage (as my old Imac g5 was getting too slow for this task). It's not a macpro but it should be fine. I am working off an external 640 firewire 800 disc (newly formatted, 500 go free). I know HDV isn't the best codec to edit in so I even tried reencoding the media to apples intermediate codec but had same result with system slowing down.
I am getting worried that this may be an issue caused by the new iMac's graphicscard (as many new iMacusers are having problems with freezes) but apart from this I have never had a single real freeze of the system.
if you have any idea what might be going on I really appreciate any, ANY, feedback.

Be sure you're using the latest drivers for your Decklink...
If you didn't perform a totally clean install of the studio 2 when you got it, that might help. It's always been my habit to rebuild my startup disk any time a new OS comes out (i.e. Panther to Tiger) and when a new studio is released... I just have a very stable system as are the ones I watch after. I'm totally convinced this needs to be done periodically. At the school I teach at part time, there are about 65 FCP bays. They do this totally clean install every single semester. I'm convinced that this is the reason they are so stable in general, even being used by many user accounts etc...and by novice users to boot.
Also keep in mind that as drives get fuller, they get slower... so need to keep at least 10% free... they actually start slowing down at 70% capacity. As a side note, CalDigit's new HD PRO unit is stripped in such a manner that it doesn't slow down as it fills up... Apparently they stripe it so that every other drive is using the fastest part of the platters and the others start by using the slowest part of the platters or some such...

  • Oracle Report Performance Slow

I have a report which extracting the data from few complex queries and most of the tables that this report using are large tables.
The problem I'm facing is the entire application become very very slow/hang whenever this report being runned.
I have index all the necessary fields and process the report using those indexed field but still can't help.
Is there anyway to improve the performance? Will it help if I combine all the queries into one query?
How about the Database? any configurations can be set?
    Regards,
    Cheong

The execution of the query doesn't depend on Reports, it is done in the database. So, check your query using the normal performance tuning tools.
If just your report is slow (i.e. not the query) it could be because you have extensive formatting in your report. Formatting is done by Reports, not by the database. Try to do as much formatting in the query.

  • AWR - Database Performance Slow

If my Whole Database Performance is slow,
running AWR report include current time statistics when the DB Performance is slow ?

The default AWR Snapshot Interval is 1 hour. So, if you have the default implementation, you will be able to create an AWR report for the period 10am to 11am. It will not reflect what or why "slowness" occurred at 10:45. The statistics in the AWR report will be a summation / averaging of all the activity in the entire hour.
You could modify the Snapshot Interval (using dbms_workload_repository.modify_snapshot_settings) to have Oracle collect snapshots every 15minutes. But that will apply after the change has been made. So, if you have a slowness subsequently, you will be able to investigate it with the AWR report for that period. But what has been collected in the past at hourly intervals cannot be refined any further.

  • Performance (slow) and (maybe) problems doing the troubleshooting steps

I had noticed Time Machine backups taking longer and having more of a performance hit when they were happening, so I decided to check things out.
Based on some forum postings, I decided to try some of the steps outlined in the main "troubleshooting" thread.
Bottom line: I ended up at the Repair/Verify Disk step (A5) in the troubleshooting steps and since I'm using a Time Capsule, proceeded with (trying) to run a repair on the sparse bundle. Opened things up, but when I tried to " . . . mount the sparse bundle by opening the TC in the Finder and double-clicking on the sparse bundle" things seemed to hang.
I have a window indicating it is opening the sparse bundle (name seems correct), but it has been doing this for over half an hour without any visible progress. All I have is a process bar and "Checking Volumes..." (I do have cancel & skip as options.)
I'm loath to cancel or skip as it is possible that taking this long is normal.
Can anyone give me an idea how long to expect this to take and/or if it won't open properly, suggest a next step to try?
    Thanks in advance,

Also, the first attempt took almost 8 hours(!) and didn't detect any errors.
I see, re: reset. I'm pretty much in agreement that it's beginning to look like deleting the sparse bundle and just letting time machine take over (i.e. starting from scratch) is looking like the main option.
I guess on one level, I'm back to the strangeness of my "problem." Everything, other than being really slow (including the disk utility check), seems to be working. On one level, I am paranoid that there is indeed a problem and worry that if I just ignore it, it will come back to bite me if I ever actually need to restore from the backup.
    Thanks again,

  • PSE performance slow

PSE 8, Windows XP, 2Gb memory
    Symptoms
Takes quite some time for thumbnails to generate or for larger
If I select several thumbnails and type a tag name into the tags search box, it can take up to 15 seconds for the tag results to be displayed
There could be several factors at play
    Older PC
I have an older Dell Inspiron running XP. Having said that it is still an Intel 1.8GHz with Hyperthreading and 2Gb memory. When I notice the slow performance I do not see excessive CPU, nor memory consumption. The FSB I think is 667Mhz
    Images are on external NAS
I have a ReadyNas Duo (v1) that is ethernet cabled to my router which is ethernet cabled to my PC. Everything is at 100Mb. I have 2 1Tb drives in X-Raid. When generating thumbnails I do see network activity, but not when tagging. I've never seen the network monitor go over about 50%. The catalog is on local disk.
    Older modem/router
I have a Linksys WAG200 modem/router. I do see a lot of activity over the ports when I'm working.
    Solutions?
I'd like some considered suggestions. Sure I could replace everything but then I wouldn't have learned anything.
I'm wondering whether bringing all the photo's off the NAS into local disk would be an advantage. As a side issue I backed up the catalog recently, and while the folders with the catalog didn't seem that big, the process was something like a 30Gb backup which seemed ridiculous and took about half an hour to write (to the NAS). I'm assuming it was the thumbnails but I don't need to back those up as if I have a catastrophic failure I'm quite happy to let it chug away during recovery and regenerate the thumbnails. Not like I have to do it every week... Anyway if I brought the images into local storage I'd then have to schedule backups to the NAS regularly but that's OK...
I'm wondering whether the old Linksys gateway is a bottleneck and since I have several other Netgear devces about the place whether upgrading to a gigabit Netgear gateway would do any good.
PC. I'll have to upgrade anyway in which case I'd go for i7, gigabit ethernet, video card. I'm not entirely convinced that the PC is the major problem though...
    Any help appreciated...

    Hi,
The activity is slower in case of network media involved. Bringing your media into local disk would make your Organizer faster.
The size of backup folder is inclusive of media file size, catalog file, thumbnail cache etc. Hence it would not just be thumbnails. Also taking backup would be faster for non-network drives.
I would suggest you to try Organizer with media on non-network drives. That should solve majority of your issues.

  • FCP sooo slow to open

    Hi,
I am running FCP v5.1.2 on a Mac Pro 2.66 with 5gb of ram and if I have closed it with a project open it can take up to 5 minutes to open. It happens with all projects. The bigger the project the longer it takes. I saw this on my old g5 to.
Anyone know how to fix this apart from close the projects down before you quit?

    binning the prefs< </div>
Interesting new expression for the most common folk remedy around here. I'd be interested in knowing if binning them has any effect on your symptoms in the slightest. But you'd have to bin your prefs only, restart and examine the issue.
Slow opening is rarely associated with the size of the or length of the project on our systems. It's more likely associated with the process of searching and inventorying drives and filling caches, as others have indicated. Have you been using sources from networked or external drives such as FW disks or USB jump drives? Even if you copied it all to your drive before you imported the media, FCP may still be trying to find those externals. I'm not sure how to solve that, sorry. We have developed our workflow to copy from externals and eject them before importing.
Hope you get it figured out. Keep posting additional information. Please let us know if binning your prefs helps.

  • System performance slow

Here recently my mac has been running really slow, any suggetion as to how to resolve this issue?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.
