FCP 6 Preferences to FCP 7?

Hi folks...
I'm running FCP 6 on one computer. I'm installing FCP 7 on a brand new computer, no upgrade. I want to use my current preferences on the new machine. Is there any way to do that? Will FCP 7 recognize my FCP 6 Pref files?
thanks!

Look into Preference Manager. I'm not sure if it will take preference from FCP6 to 7 but give them a look. It's a great tool regardless if it helps you with your current situation.

  • How to clear FCP Preference folder/cache

I think some of the problems I am having with FCP is due to old cache files that are still stored somewhere in the system. In the past I heard people talk about 'clearing FCP preference cache' but I could never figure out how to do it.
Can someone help me on this?
Some of the problems I am having are:
    - FCP freezes while 'log and transfer'
    - slow rendering speed
    - very slow export process
    - i had to change the location of the capture scratch because the original location wouldn't work anymore even if I had plenty of hard disk space in the system
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Download and run Digital Rebellion's Peference Manager. Set it to delete your preferences for Final Cut Pro. (It manages preferences on the whole FC suite as well as the Adobe CC suite)
This will reset your FCP system to its default state. This means all your custom settings and paths will need to be reset.

  • Where are the FCP preference files???

Is it possible to delete the preferences in FCP 5 without the program opening? If so how do I get to there?

Get yourself fcprescue for your version of fcp.
It trashes all the prefs (which are stashed in a couple of places.) It also allows you to save a good set. Then it's a matter of two clicks to trash bad prefs and put your good ones back.
    It's a must have.

  • Boris 3D text editing window won't open without deleting FCP preferences

So, in my FCP7 projects, the Boris 3D text editing window won't open without deleting FCP preferences first. I've tried new projects, old projects, open all new windows on top settings. Once I delete the preferences, viola, opens right up. I can rebuild my preferences and after just a few days it won't open again... without preference delete.
I'm on a Macbook Pro 17'" i7 and do most of my editing on a 27" Apple Cinema Display. This is the only reason I could come up with. However I did some editing from the Macbook's screen and after 1 day, the Boris 3D editing window again refused to open. I have no idea. Is this is a known bug, etc.?
    Help!

With Final Cut not running, trash the Boris Title 3D preference file.
    /Library/Preferences/Title 3D Preferences
Also, you could have a corrupt or duplicate font file. Open FontBook and check it out.

  • FCP Preferences locking and also machines setting slocking

    Hi,
I have FCP 6.0.3 with Apple Mac.I am maintains the 5 fcp machines and there are 8 vt editors every time they change the systems preferences and user preferences and also the machine settings.
Is there any solutions that i can lock the FCP preferences so that editors can't change. Even i am looking the solutions that if i will lock the machines settings that will also help me.
    Please help me guys.

If you give each editor their own user account in Mac OS X. They will have their own set of FCP preferences. The main set of prefs on the Admin account will remain untouched.
MultiUserPro might also offer a solution -although I haven't actually tried it myself:

  • FCP Preferences Missing!

    Well,
I've been bumping along for the past couple days with rendering issues (described in earlier posts). As the frustration continuted today, I went to trash the FCP preferences. To my surprise, they were not present. I could find the FCP Studio preferences, but not the FCP ones.
So, I decided to reinstall the entire studio package. I hope this clean sweep takes care of everything.
    Wish me luck.

  • Can't open fcp project file - fcp not responding

starts to open project but gets to 23% and freezes fcp...project is being stored on a lacie 250gig protable hd with firewire. never had this issue after tons of work. tried going to a autosave version but tried several and they freeze up fcp
any ideas short of moving all the media to another drive and starting a new project (I was just about to start cutting this project today).

    Welcome to the forum!
Post the version of FCP you're running.
Try opening a new project file, then importing the captured clips into it... might fix this... If you trash your preferences for FCP found in the user/library/preferences/FCP User data folder, you can just click on the application and it won't try to open the last project file.
Can you open earlier project files OK?

  • FCP 7 and FCP-X on same partition:  what problems are caused?

I'm trying to figure out if the performance issues I'm having with FCP-X can be remedied, or if the problem is just buggy software.  Apparently, even a newer, faster, more powerful Mac is not the answer, as I read complaints from people with new, suped-up Mac Pros who say the software slows to a crawl.  Sounds familiar to me, but I'm on iMacs and a MacBook Pro -- all my Macs are 3-4 years old, and are from that Core 2 Duo era, not Quad Core processors.  All my Macs are maxed out at 4 GB or RAM.  So I'm certain new machines are in my future.  But judging from what some people say about their newer, faster machines, I'm not entirely convinced that it would solve the problem I'm having with FCP-X.
There are numerous threads here reporting sluggish performance (perpetual spinning beach balls) relating to a memory leak or a problem relating to FCP-X's usage of memory (some say it happens worse in Lion).  Is that the problem?  And if it is, why hasn't Apple addressed it?
Then there is this matter of having FCP-7 (FCP Studio) and FCP-X installed on the same partition.  Apple's "Best Practices" article clearly states that it's best to have the two applications installed on separate partitions.  Only problem (for me) is, I already had FCP-7 installed on the primary partition.  When I purchased FCP-X (the day it first became available), I hadn't read that article, so naturally, the software got installed...you guessed it...on the primary partition.  And yes, I could uninstall FCP-7 (FCP Studio), create a new partition, and then re-install it.  But I remember how long it took to install FCP Studio (about 4 hours, as I recall), so I've put off the ordeal of heading down that road.
    So I'm wondering.......
What problems are known to occur as a result of having FCP-7 and FCP-X installed on the same partition?  Would my sluggish performance be related to this?  Or would going to the trouble of uninstalling FCP-7, re-partitioning, then re-installing FCP-7 (FCP Studio) into its own play space, only be a waste of time?
What evidence is there that this co-install is the culprit causing sluggish performance?
What ARE the problems that the co-install causes?  I've never heard anyone address this specifically.

When FCP X first came out, Apple recommended keeping FCS 3 on a separate partition, so I did that.
Recently I did a clean reinstall or Lion and installed FCS 3 as normal, followed by FCP X 10.0.3.
During the FCP X install, FCP 7 was moved to a new folder called Final Cut Studio.
'Studio' and FCP X now work happily on the same partition - but I have not tried opening both at the same time!
Just now, both applications are the most stable they have ever been.
These are my standard tips for improving performance:
First, check the spec of your iMac against the system requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Particularly your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
    Other ways to improve performance:
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
Create Optimised media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Hide Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power.
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot.
Move your Projects and Events to an external HD (make sure it's formatted OS Extended - with journaled on or off) and run from there.
Contrary to what Ian said above, the biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

  • FCP 7 - XML - FCP X, audio missing in transfer?

Using 7toX for Final Cut Pro ... two issues:
    1.  I export and XML from FCP 7.  I use 7toX to convert it and import it into FCP X.  Does a great job.  But I notice that 'some' of the clips on a given timeline (project) are missing their audio.  If I 'Find in Browser' and 'replace' the clip on the timeline with the clip from the Browser I get my audio.  It's a bit of a laborious process.  So the FCP 7 to FCP X is working fine in terms of the actual clips themselves, but the 'sequence' or 'project' being translated over, the audio is missing on random clips.
Maybe it's the clips that I had a slight sound adjustment on, I'm checking.  But still, it would be nice to know how to export the XML properly so as not to have issues.
    2.  I have the audio dipping behind the voice-over in the original FCP 7 sequence.  When I import the sequence into FCP X I can still HEAR the dip, but I can't see any keyframes to adjust.  I'm wondering what the protocol is here ...
    All ears,
    Ben

Thank you Tom, it was the next step on my list.
But while I've got your attention, maybe I could ask: where does FCPX store it's effects plug-ins?  I'm wanting to see if any of my older 3rd party plug-ins might work in FCPX.

  • How to open a project FCP 7 in FCP 4.5?

I can't open a project (i've made in fcp 7) in fcp 4.5. I've tried to make an XML-document (all five available options), but it doesn't work.
    Anyone an idea?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the forum!
If memory serves me correct it should be XML version 1. Did you highlight what you want to export in the Browser and choose File>Export>XML?
You are trying to open with FCP 4.5 not FCP 4 correct?
What do you need to go to 4.5 for? If you are working in a codec that isn't supported by FCP 4.5 then you will have an issue. What codec are you working with?

  • Universal crossgrade update from FCP HD to FCP Studio on Mac Book Pro

    Hi all,
Just ordered my universal upgrade for my MBP from Apple to go from FCP-HD to FCP Studio. My MBP has FCPHD installed on it. I installed it without being aware that it was not compatable with the intel chip.
Just wondering if there are any problems associated with simpy installing the complete crossgrade FCP Studio without first uninstalling FCPHD.
Or is it suggested to completely uninstall FCPHD before installing the new universal version of FCP studio.
The answer may ship with the software but I was wondering if I should start going through the uninstall process as I hear it is a bit involved.
    Thanks for any help.

When I attempt to install the 5.1 cross-grade on a newly formatted hard drive, that is also set as the boot drive with the latest version of OSX on my dual G5, the 5.1 install goes through the entire process up until I get to the part where it begins actually installing the actual software applications. Then it fails--quits- completely quits installing. And yes, both of my optical disk drives are working. I have another disk drive that contains the last version of Final Cut Studio and when I first tried to install the cross-grade on that drive it wont even get past the screen that says that the software is checking to see if it can be installed on the drive. I was told by someone at Apple Pro Applications support that if 5.1 would not install on a new formatted hard drive that contained nothing but the latest version of OSX that I had bad install disks. It's a matter of getting them replaced. I KEEP GETTING THE RUN AROUND!!! It's like no one at Apple cares. I wait over two hours to get help, but I really am not getting help. When I call Panasonic for help with my AJ-HD27H VariCam Camcorders, or my a Aj-HD1200 decks, they bend over backwards to help me. Or when I have a problem with a Canopus Editing System help is easy and reliable.
Is there anyone who knows from whom I can go for an easy replacement of these instal disks?????

I can probably answer this myself, but is there any way to open project from FCP 6 in FCP 10? Can't export as an XML because I no longer have FCP 6.

YYou will need to find someone with your version or FCP7.

  • Can FCP 7 and FCP X be installed on the same volume?

Yes. When you download FCPX it moves the older suite of applications into a folder call Final Cut Studio.

    You either need to either:
    1) use the following hack -

    or
    2) Upgrade to FCP 5
