FCP 6 stills shake when zoom/pan

I am having a problem with some stills shaking when I zoom/pan them. I have knocked down the image size and file size in photoshop but the problem still keeps coming back.

Listen to Tim.
Here's the larger explanation.
The flickering you see is an artifact of the interlaced nature of video. It is a result of either very thin (often horizontal) elements that exist on one scanline as is common in text/ titling or scanned images with a great deal of detail in high contrast. (Note: It does no good to import images hugely larger than the necessary pixel dimensions of the video sequence. All it does is force FCP to work harder at interpolation.)
As the alternate fields play, the offending element is essentially being turned on/off creating the impression of a flicker. The basic strategy is to get the element to exist over two scanlines so it is refreshed every time the field plays and/or to reduce the amount of contrast so the difference between ON and OFF is not noticeable.
Things to try (In increasing order of image degradation)
• (in FCP) field order>none
• (in FCP or Photoshop) reduce whites by 10% - reduces overly bright areas
• (in FCP) flicker filter - minimum
• (in Photoshop) motion blur>vertical> .2 - .5 pixels - blurs vertically only
• (In FCP or Photoshop) Gaussian blur> .2 - .5 pixels -blurs both horizontally as well as vertically
• (in FCP or Photoshop) deinterlace - throws away half the image and is generally not appropriate on scanned or still images.
One neat trick is to use the selection tool to limit area you apply the vertical and/or gaussian blur to only the troublesome part rather than indiscriminately soften the entire thing.
Remember: Unless you are viewing your work in the appropriate external NTSC/PAL monitor, you are playing blind. The computer monitor only shows you a proxy image.
good luck.

  • Siri doesn't work, apps still shake when home button pressed

So I got my iPad mini 8 weeks ago and when you hold down the middle button siri dosent pop up anymore. I haven't updated my device to ios 7 yet because I don't have enough ICloud backup. Also when I hold down an app to delete it and then press the home button the apps still shake and don't stop. I don't know whether to take my iPad to the apple store because I don't know if it will have to reboot

Does Siri say your name by how it is spelled or by how you've pronunced it to her? I'd hate to think of how she'd mangle my name if it went by how it was spelled.

  • NVidia error code 6 When zooming and panning a high res still image

I am consistantly getting the following error code which shuts down CS6.  This is when zooming and panning a still images measuring something like 5300 pixels wide, and 4000 pixels high.  I started by looking  at the video driver, but nVidia says it is up to date.  I am now wondering if the size of the still image is actually the problem? This is in a 1080 sequence.
    Harware is GTX570
    Any ideas?

    Bill and Dennis.
Error Code 6 message -  new challeng in the past 48 hours on very old premiere project.
    My system - Win 7 64 byte serv pack 1, Ppro CS5.0.3, I7 processor, 12 g ram,  nvidia gtx 470.
In the past 2 days, I am getting error code 6 from Nvidia on a logo that is keyed and 3d rolled on white background.  The logo has been used without issue for many months in this same project and was encoded correctly by Adobe 1920 x 1280.   Once this issue began,  I had to render it 1-3 frames per request of project rendering last night.  I imported the correctly encoded logo again to the project and it began to have the same issue again.  I tried to change the harsh 3d rotations to see if it would relieve the processors overall.    Nothing changed after it began to freeze up wtih the error message.
I saved, shut the PC down and left the system rest overnight.
This morning the project will get past the small load screen, but will not get past pulling the first file in the project once the editing screen loads.  Prem Pro will launch correctly in all other projects this morning, but not this one.  It gives me the same error message as it did when the problem started, but I can't even begin to touch the project.   Message - "Hardware config doesn't meet min standards Error Code 6".  I close the program, but then have to enter task manager to relaunch the program since it just hangs there.
My work around, when the project launched yesterday, was to render a much smaller amount of frames at a time which worked SLOWLY, but now I can't even access the program.  Ouch.  Backups are available from a few days ago, but I want to discover why this happened to avoid this issue for the future.  Not much confidence at this point particularly when I rendered to match rez and deleted the media cache yesterday just in case the system was having to work around more cache than needed.
I have my computer hardware company looking into the issue, but I didn't take any known updates on the software in the past week.  I thought this might be a thermal issue because we are having some challenges keeping our editing area cool enough, but that isn't the issue this morning because the other projects do launch correctly and the ambient temps are down.  Thanks for any suggestions.  I am a little slow to go out and see if there are any updates from Nvidia until I am out of options.  I don't want to change the system scenario before I see if there are any other options.

  • How do I stabilize shimmering fine lines when zooming or panning?

I just completed an HD video that was exported in Standard Definition (SD) using Apple ProRes 422 codec. The video came out fine except when the clip of a JPG image zooms in or out using the zoom motion controls. The fine detail "shimmers" or "flutters", especially when zooming at a point when the image is nearly all the way zoomed out. (the fine detail is the smallest, then.) This is not a typical de-interlace problem where the whole image is highly erratic. The disturbance only happens on the fine detail in the JPG; the thicker lines are not affected. I applied a de-interlace filter and then separately applied a de-flicker filter. Neither of these filters had any effect. I was told by a highly regarded technician at our local access station who I would evaluate as an expert in FCP that this shimmering affect for fine detail was normal, especially in SD. HD, he said, will greatly reduce but will not eliminate it.
Does others have thoughts about this and possible solutions? Thank you

The flickering is an artifact of the two field structure of interlaced video. It is a result of very thin (often horizontal) elements that exist on one scanline as is common in text or titling. This can also be the case in images with great deal of detail with high contrast as well as when when you are engaged in pan/zoom moves on stills.
As the alternate fields play, the flashing element is essentially being turned on/off. The basic strategy is to get the element to exist over two scanlines so it is refreshed every time the field plays or to reduce the amount of contrast so the difference between ON and OFF is not noticeable.
Before you start any of these steps listed below, make sure you are viewing your material on an appropriate monitor. If you are working in an NTSC/PAL interlaced format (eg DV) you need an external TV monitor - not a computer screen. Without the appropriate device, you are playing blind.
    • (in FCP or Photoshop) deinterlace - throws away half the image and is generally not appropriate on scanned images
Remember: Unless you are viewing your work in the appropriate external NTSC/PAL monitor, you are playing blind. The computer monitor only shows you a proxy image.
One final thought, if you have slowed your material significantly, and have not used some sort of frame blending/optical flow processing, you may be simply duplicating frames to create the additional material to pad the playback. The flashing you see is the result of this.
    good luck.

  • Still Image looks blurry when zoomed

Hello, I am using FCP 5 and I noticed that when I zoom in on a picture, even if it's resolution is much larger than 720 x 480, the picture seems blurry. I tried de-interlacing, however it still remains blurry. In the viewer it seems fine, however once I put it into the Timeline to be viewed in the Canvas, it looses it's clarity when zoomed. Any suggestions?

    Mark,
Is the project you are working with one that was originally created in an older version of FCP (like 4.5) then upgraded to 5? If so, you might want to try changing your render setting from normal to linear. If that does not do the trick, I would recommend setting up an external monitor. Judge by that- not the canvas.

  • Still jpeg shakes when played on tv

ok so i'm using fcp and i made a freeze frame on a biker. when i export that freeze frame to the desktop, then re-import it to fcp and put it in the timeline and export to a dvd and play it on my tv, that still shakes like crazy....like it's not really still or something, wha's the matter?

Hey Brian, you know thats funny you should ask this question because I just had the same thing happen to me tonight. I have 35 still photos that I made with freeze frame , they all play within 8 seconds and they all look shaky. Whant I just did was and dont quote me on this, I double clicked on the frame in the timeline, then click on the motion tab, then scroll down to time remap, open that up, then find, frame blending, mine was checked, I just unchecked it on every clip and I'm going to burn it again, I'll let you know if it works.

  • When slowly panning , objects or areas with high contrast , flicker / shake

    Hello,
I purchased a canon 5d mark3 to use mostly as a video camera. I'm experiencing a very frustrating issue (I'm explaining it in more detail below).
I've been in contact with canon repair facility and tech support  for the past 2 months (since I first purchased the camera. I sent the camera for repair already twice and both times I got the camera back after supposedly been “fixed” but the exact same issue is still there… I’m already frustrated and confused about this…  I haven't had an answer or a solution as today.
I'm wondering if anybody else is having a similar issue. I did find some people online complaining of a similar problem but most of those pages are a year old or so.
I have been also researching and looking to all kinds of videos (specially at vimeo) where the 5d mark3 it's been used and even in more extreme and faster panning I don't see the same issue I'm experiencing.
Some technicians at canon think it may be an issue with the lens ( 24 - 105 canon lens that comes with the camera).
I did run all kinds of tests etc (even at B&H where I purchased it) with no luck .
Here is a more detail description of the issue:
The problem is that (even with a fluid head tripod) when slowly panning , objects or areas with high contrast , flicker / shake (most noticeable on white objects with daylight over a dark surface). This happens at 24 and 30 fps (not at 60fps) The technician on the phone mentioned that I should use higher shutter speeds (I was using 1/50 for 24fps and 1/60 for 30fps) I did try it with several shutter speeds all the way up to 4000 and the issue is even more noticeable. I tried with and without IS with the same result. I actually probably I already tested all the different settings always with the same results.
I will appreciate any ideas or knowledge on this issue …also I would like to hear from other users with the same problem…
Here I uploaded a few examples:

    Thanks

Ok so really? nobody has nothing to say about it? why? nobody can see the issue? nobody cares? or is just uncomfortable?any canon tech reading the forums?

If you are using the iPhone camera zoom then remember that this is a digital zoom not an optical zoom. The zoomed in area will have fewer pixels and not appear as clear. The more you zoom the worse it gets. It's like cropping a picture after it has been taken.

You know Lloyd, if this is a second thread about an old problem, you are really better off in the original thread. It allows us to follow along with the problem at hand, what has been suggested and what you have tried so far and the results.
Just off the top of my head and without searching for the original thread (I'm too lazy today,) I'm guessing you might have a corrupted file or render file.
Does it always stop at the same place? Where is your media stored? to where are you exporting? How much ram do you have?

  • Wacom Intuos Pro with Ai zooming/panning using the stylus not working

I'm having a problem with my Intuos Pro Medium tablet in Adobe Illustrator CC 17.1.0 (Mac OSX 10.9.2) while zooming/panning using the stylus.
I've set my primary button on the pen on Pan/Scroll.
When you hold alt/option+primary button on the stylus (pan/scroll)+drag, you could zoom in/out. (like you would if you were to hold alt/opt and push up on the trackpad with two fingers to zoom in or out - doing this works)
When you hold the primary button, you could pan around the artboards.
I used this alot before in the past with an Intuos 4 with an old driver but now it doesn't work with the new tablet and drivers.
Instead when I hold the primary button it shows only the grabber hand (which is no help).
I have tested this in Photoshop on the same machine and it works as it should, I can Zoom and Pan properly.
Please help - is there a setting I am missing somewhere in Ai?

    Kelly,
Sorry for our lack of response. We hope you have been able to resolve this problem, it's not one we have seen ourselves. Single click and drag should be working with an Intuous Pro on Mac or Win. Back in February you may have still been using the older AIR based version of Muse. The Muse CC and CC 2014 may have ale have fixed that issue. Please let us know if this is still affecting you...
    Thanks,
    Dave

  • To send from FCP to Shake can I send clips out of the time line?

My clips are coming into Shake blacked out- do I have to convert these to QT files first, and if so how does that work flow look like- would I overright the Shake rendered QT over the original clip in the FCP timeline? This doesn't seem too elegent, does Shake only take still images and QT files?
    Thanks,
    -todd

I don't use iMovie but there is a way to get .mov files out through one of the export functions (Share or something like that). import the .mov files into fcp, create a DV NTSC 48K sequence and you'll find you do not need to render.
Also, when you export .mov files from iMovie, you can filein directly to Shake if need be.
Out of curiosity, why are you bothering with iMovie at all if you're using FCP and Shake?

  • My 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

My 2006 - 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV 1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. However, when I open the project on my other Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and FCP 6, the footage works fine as it does on my newer Imac running Mavericks and FCP 7. I have tried a Quicktime update on the Mac Pro that the footage doesn't work on but it says that I already have the newest version of Quicktime installed. I have also tried reinstalling the Final Cut Pro Studio twice, still no fix. I'm completely out of solutions and need to be able to edit HDV footage on this machine. Any help would be great. Thanks.

there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up.  Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests.  But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum.  there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc.

  • Any solution to pixelated images when zooming?

Wondering if there is a solution to prevent pdf images on transparent background from pixelating when zoomed in.
This is a screen capture. There are two knife images. The large white knife is a pdf on a transparent background saved at 108 ppi in photoshop, it is part of a object state/slide show (saved as vector obviously since type is sharp) that fades in. Doesn't seem to matter what size/dimensions I use, it still gets blurry when you pinch and zoom.
    See here:
The smaller black knife image at top left is also a pdf on transparent background, saved at 108 ppi in photoshop. It is not an object state, etc.
The knife images look fine at full screen on the iPad, but once you pinch and zoom, both images loose focus and become blurry.
Any solution to this? The images need to be pdf (or png - which I understand will not scale at all), because they are on transparent backgrounds.
    Thanks!

  • Text Moves When Zooming/Printing

    Hi everyone,
My wife is going to school for graphic design and is having a huge problem with InDesign. When placing text in very precise locations, the text moves when she zooms in/out significantly. Even when it shows the text being in the perfect location at 100% (although it is not perfect when zooming in or out), it will be moved when the file is exported as a PDF or printed. Needless to say this is causing major problems for her. We have already reset the program preferences with no luck. She is using the Design Premium CS5.5 version of InDesign on a MacBook Pro with OSX Lion.
As a side note, I tried the same tasks on my Windows 7 PC with Design Standard CS5 with no problems. We compared the program settings and made sure there were no differences but it still happened on her Mac. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi everyone,
I'm really sorry for the delay. I took screenshots at each zoom where the type shifted. Here are the screenshots:
    @4000%
    @300%
    @125%
    @100%
The reason that I don't believe it is simply monitor inconsistencies is due to the fact that whether I align the type at 4000% or 100%, the print still doesn't match the on-screen display. If I align at 100%, the print is still off by the same amount as these screenshots. Thanks again for your help.
