FCP 6 won't export QT as "self-contained"

I'm trying to export some files as QT's, but even though the "make movie self-contained" box IS checked, they still won't play without opening FCP. I did change playback preferences from FCP to QT, which works on the source computer... but when I move the files to another computer, they still won't play. Any thoughts?

I think we are getting confused with what you want to do here... if all you want to do is open the file up inside QuickTime simply right click or control click - Open With > QuickTime Pro.
This will not open in Final Cut Pro. Also, you never told use what codec you were working in.
Know this - Self Contained has nothing to do with which application opens the movie file. This function determines how the file will be created. By default, a movie file created by Final Cut Pro will try and open with Final Cut Pro. You can change this with the "Get Info" switch, then select QuickTime Pro as the default player.
Hope this helps,

  • Out of memory error when exporting to QT self contained movie

When I export to QT self contained movie the program runs for about an hour then brings an "out of memory" error. My project is 1hour 10 min. I have 650 GB on the external drive I'm saving to and another 145 GB on my imac's drive. There are also photographs I've included in the sequence but I have removed them all from the sequence to see if the format was the problem but the error still comes up. I would appreciate any help.

Well I don't have to render as I go, it is just a choice. I checked to see if all the video and stills were rendered. I re-rendered after making sure all of the options were checked, removed all of the stills from the timeline just in case the still format was the problem, then attempted to export again. It took about 2 hours. I watched with activity monitor and it took almost all of the available disc space then my computer shut itself down. When I rebooted there was a Quicktime file 320 GB in size but would not open. I got an error message that it was not a mov. file.
    But to answer your question:
    Video is 29.97fps DV/DVCPRO
    Frame size is 720 x 480
    3.0 mb/sec
    16 bit Integer
    Aplha= None /ignore
    Composit is Normal
    NTSC-CCIR 601
    Stereo
Stills are at 25.0 fps JPEG

  • FCP 5.1 keeps trying to export movie as self-contained

Not sure if this is a bug or this is just user error, but in 5.1 i'm trying to export a sequence as a reference movie so that i can send it to iDVD. Can't do self-contained since I don't have the HD space. Regardless of whether or not I hit "make self-contained movie" it crunches, maxes out the read/write meter in Activity Monitor, and starts trying to export the whole movie.
Am I setting something wrong in a weird pref pane?

How do you know the program is creating a self-contained movie? It doesn't sound as though you are letting it finish.
If there are a great number of effects that are unrendered when you export as a reference, FCP must render them to be included with the pointers and ther result is the reference movie can be nearly as large as a self-contained movie.
FWIW - if you don't have enough space for a self contained movie on your internal harddrive, you are probably operating without enough space, period ....

  • FCP project not rendering well as self contained QT file

G-4 (late model) 800Mhz,1GB SDRAM, 34 gig of space left, OS 10.3, FCP 4.0.1 LiveType 1.0.1 and Quicktime 6.4
Trying to render my little 15 second project as a self contained QT File so I can send it to a place, over HS internet, to be used as a full quality production over their in-house system. Looks like you must use compressor to do this but set at uncompressed. The anamorphic final piece looks sqwished. Did I miss a setting someplace? Also, it looks pixalated.Using the Quicktime movie standard setting is not responding to the self contained setting. It is not self contained. Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Sid Coleman

    #3 output lossless DV
    Shane's Stock Answer #3:
To export your DV project so there is no loss in quality, simply go to the File Menu and select EXPORT>QUICKTIME MOVIE. Not Quicktime Conversion, fot this will compress the footage. Make sure the settings match your timeline settings, make it self contained and you are set.
If it is anamorphic, then you need to adjust the dimensions by multiplying by 1.33. So 720 will be 960. 960x480.

  • Will only export as a Self-Contained file

I am trying to export my project as a QuickTime movie that's not self-contained but even though I have the box unchecked it still writes all the video / audio to the file (making it GBs where it should be KBs). How do I fix this without reinstalling FCP?

Make sure that the Sequence you're attempting to export is fully rendered. If it isn't fully rendered, the export will create the needed render files, thus increasing the amount of time and the size of the files.
Look in the Sequence->Render menus and make sure that all render types have a check mark next to them BEFORE you export.

  • FCP won't export M2V

I am running FCP Studio and trying to export an m2v. I recently upgraded my G5 and basically put my old hard drives right into the new G5 box. Since I did that, FCP asked for a serial number again, and I entered it. OK. Now I am trying to export the Mpeg2 and it says it can't export until DVD studio Pro is serialized - but then I run DVD studio pro and it IS serialized and registered. Restart did not fix it. FCP just can't seem to tell that DVD studio pro is already serialized and won't export. Should I trash my preferences? FCP or DVD studio pro or both? Any suggestions?

    FYI....
Trying to uninstall DVD Pro and then re-installing it will not work! I ran through this problem when I upgraded to FCP Studio. The issue lies between DVD Pro and QT7, it is a bug that apple is currently trying to resolve.
I spent numerous hours on the phone with apple to get this issue resolved. The best work around at the moment is going through Compressor and making a M2V. Compressor will retain your chapter markers from FCP no worries.
The only issue is time, it takes longer using compressor but the quality is 100x better because you have more control of the VBP.

  • Can't export as a self contained movie

I made a slidshow using FCE. Exported it as a self contained movie. And then moved it to iDVD and burned the disk. I later went back into FCE to make some changed to the show. Now, when I try to export it as a movie, it exports only about 10 seconds of the show. What might have happened and how do I rectify it? It is a puzzle to me especially since I was successful the first time.
I'm running 10.5.8 on the black iBook.

Check that there is no in/out points in the Timeline.
In/out points will export only the selected area.

  • FCP won't export MPEG2

Just upgraded my OS to 10.5.7 from 10.4.9. No other changes to the system have been made but now FCP 4 will not export MPEG2. FCP locks up every time I try. FCP will still export QT and others, just not MPEG2. Never been a problem in the past. Any ideas?

You were delightfully clear. My point it your previous experience doesn't count for anything because of the drastic change you've made to the computer.
Think of it this way. Your computer is a human body that someone decides to do a heart transplant on even though the current heart seems to be functioning just peachy. Not only do they do a heart transplant, they don't bother to fully remove the previous version but simply splice in a few new valves and maybe a larger diameter aorta. So, this poor guy wakes up the next morning and finds that he can't walk because the new cobbled up heart just doesn't function as well as the older perfectly functioning one. All this flies in the face of the assurances of the Doctors (Apple marketing dept). They told him everything would be WONDERFUL when they were finished. Yea, right.
Let's not forget your liver 4.5 is not supported by heart 10.5.7

  • Please help - FCP won't export using DVCPro HD (or any HD) settings.

Please help. I'm under a tight deadline to deliver.
The native setting for both the project and footage is DVCPro HD 720p60 but when I export with this setting, or any other HD setting, whether to a Quicktime Movie or using Quicktime Conversion, the resulting image has thick black lines on both sides of the screen and in the middle.
I have Quicktime Pro and have already reinstalled FCP to make sure I have all the components. But it's still not working.
Please - any advice would help.
    Thanks.

Well, have you done the usual things for when FCP doesn't act right?
#44: FCP acting weird - Trash Prefs
Shane's Stock Answer #44: FCP acting weird or unusual. Just not like is normally should
If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the appropriate version of FCP Rescue at http://www.pistolerapost2.com/fcprescue and run it.
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.
    4) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

  • FCP won't export, background application busy

I saw the "fix" for this issue and have done what it says, but I still have the problem! I can't export the jobs I have to compressor on the computer and need to badly ASAP. Any ideas? Thanks!!!!!!!

  • Fcp won't export audio in sync, fcp won't export audio in sync

Hs anyone any experience with FCP not exporting audio in sync even though the audion and video is in sync on your timeline prior to export, someone suggested that if you have independenytly recorded audio at 44.1KHZ instead of 48K this can cause issues, tried resampling but doesnt sem to make a difference any help would be appreciated

So guys here's how it all turned out. As I couldn't re-record the original source audio wave files, I resorted to opening up the original source wave files which were 44.1k  and resample them by opening them in soundtrack pro, process tab, then select resample, this then presents a drop down tab with a range of resampling options, in this case I selected 48k which is what my video is set to.
Surprisingly quickly the source files were re-encoded ( these were around 1 and 1/2 hour each running time)
Then reopened FCP and without having to Re-edit the timeline just offlined the orginal 44.1k files and replaced them by reconnecting media and pointing to new resampled 48k files.
They dropped back in perfectly and on export video and audio were in perfect sync.
Lessons learned - always record the audio which was on a separate field recorder at 48k. - point well made Goldfish
Secondly - thanks to everyone for your helps and hints
Thirdly - in learning we have no failures, we just fall forwards
    Best regards,

  • FCP won't export clip as...

QT movie or QT conversion (Broadband High)  which is what I want to do.
I need to post a simple clip on our website and I have exported 100"s of times
in the past using the QT conversion using Broadband high but now its not creating
the full file. It ends up on my desktop but it's only 4kb.
Same thing happens when I try a straight QT export also.
    Any ideas?

It seems to have been a corrupted timeline.
I copied and pasted to a new timeline and it's exported just fine.

  • Export - QuickTime Move (self contained) - different from project size

I've been chasing a problem of my iMac not being able to play back finished videos, possibly because I don't have enough computer power (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3318100?tstart=0)
While looking at this I just realized something - the completed video is 1920x1080, even though the original source files and FCE project properties are all at 1440x1080.
Is that normal? If not, where should I start looking to find whatever is wrong?

Yes, it is normal.  It's a difference between rectangular pixels and square pixels.

  • Self Contained QT video issues

I have a AVCHD video edited with FCP 6 and exported as a self-contained QT file.
    1. When watching the self-contained file, there seems to be wavy lines during parts of it when there is motion, however, as a self-contained QT file there should be no compression? What might be causing this?
    2. The exported file appears distorted when viewed in the QT player - faces seemed stretched, etc.
    Thanks for any help.

however, as a self-contained QT file there should be no compression?
Self contained means only that the file is independant of other media files. A Reference movie literally refers to other files or parts of files in order to exist.
Using the FCP commands: Export > QuickTime Movie > Self Contained > Current Settings will produce a file without further compression, because it is made with the same codec as used by FCP's Sequence setting.
As to the file you have, what settings does it use?
Is the codec using interlacing? If so, where are you viewing it?
Are you viewing it at 100% of its native size?
    Stetched vertically or horizontally?

  • Self contained movie or FCP sequence to proper encode Dolby 5.1.

    Hi everyone,
I made a test to produce an AVCHD Blu-ray (to be burnt on regular DVD5) disk with Dolby Digital Surround 5.1, using Compressor 3.5 and FCP 7.
FCP timeline was having 6 individual audio tracks in the proper order to assign each channel to the speakers once encoded and burnt into DVD; also the sequence was set to produce 6 outputs.
My first trial was to export a QuickTime self contained movie in FCP7, using current settings for audio/video.
Then I imported it into Compressor and I noticed in the inspector that audio was listed as PCM little endian 48KHz.
I applied my target for H.264 video and Dolby 5.1 for audio.
When I tested the DVD on my Blu-ray player+Dolby 5.1 receiver, the sound was mixing improperly with the speakers.
So I tried in a different way thinking that the source QT movie might have been the issue: this time from FCP7 I used "send to compressor", in order to import directly the timeline.
In this case, in compressor, the inspector revealed the audio to be 5.1 channels and after encoding and burning the DVD (with same exact settings), this time the DVD played nicely with the audio sent properly to the speakers.
So, I guess, either I made a mistake in creating the initial QuickTime MOVIE or there was an issue for compressor to properly understand that the movie was containing 6 audio outputs.
I have checked the QT MOV using QT player and the inspector: it was listing 6 instances of distinct audio tracks PCM little endian 48KHz.
Did anyone else note this behavior?
    Regards,
    Armando.

    Hi Rick,
when I was working with a QT movie export from FCP, in one case I had been working with 6 individual mono AIFF files (created with Soundtrack Pro) in the timeline, each assigned to the proper output channel.
Even though when getting into Compressor I could see it was going to fail, as by checking the inspector I was always seeing the source audio listed as PCM little endian.
Only when I was working directly with the FCP timeline (using the "send to compressor" from FCP menu) I saw in Compressor's inspector the proper audio info as 5.1 channels; then the final export worked fine.
So I guess you could see this even without getting to the end of the process whether your final work will be good or bad.
At the end it doesn't bother me at all using the "send to" command when I have to create this Dolby 5.1 kind of movie... the thing is that I didn't find any mention of this in the documentation.
    Regards,
    Armando.
