FCP 6 won't open

I just reinstalled FCP Studio 2 and FCP 6, compressor, Motion or Soundtrack Pro will open. DVD Studio Pro, Live Type and Cinema Tools will. Yes I trashed the preferences and added the updates?

Try a google for repairing pre-bindings. It is a terminal command.
If, as you say, it won't open AT ALL -- no app starting what so ever... it could be a permissions or prebinding issue.
But now, as I type -- I'm wondering if maybe (MAYBE???) FCP is opening in another desktop scene... hit F13 and see if it isn't opening somewhere else. But your profile says you are still on Tiger - so that's not it...
Fixing pre-bindings will tie together all the system requirememnts. Sometimes (though not often) they get wonky.

FCP won't open certain projects

When I attempt to open certain projects FCP won't open. It starts up then before it opens it shuts down. I'm able to open and work in other projects and sequences.
When I was able to open and work on this particular sequence it seems to shut down when I edited, moved or rendered a still image (jpeg and pdf). I'm wondering if these are corrupt and if so how do I "uncorrupt" them.
I've already trashed preferences a number of times.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well thank you all for your help - but as many of you guessed, it was a PEBKAC issue - namely me!
I was so sure that the versions of FCP were the same, I neglected to look at the 2 relevant "about" pages. Although both FCP's came from the same disk, the one on the lap-top had up-graded itself. Once I upgraded the desk-top to match, everything was rosy.

Help! FCP won't open...

HELP!!!
I was editing using external fw800 drives for my scratch disks. Then a power hickup (I live in Italy) caused my battery backup to flick on and off causing an unintended eject of those drives. I linked the drives back up and shut down and restarted the computer. Now FCP won't open, other programs will. It loads the FCP intro screen, then no interface, back to finder. I've tried opening through my projects, then the program but to no avail....please help!!! My last resort will be reinstalling FCP, but I don't want to do that and lose my settings for my jog shuttle and magic bullet filters....thanks!

FCP won't open one of its own files.

Hi, everyone.
I have an fcp project that I need to update and modify. I tried opening it, and I got "File Error: Wrong Type". I read this previous post...

...and followed its suggestions. I quit fcp, and tried to open the file again (without the application already being opened). No luck.
Also as suggested, I saved the project file as a txt document, then change it back to an fcp document and open that. No luck again. I get "Unable to open project file".
These remedies worked for the original poster in the discussion, but they haven't worked for me. Anyone have any other ideas?
By the way, this project was created in 2006 on this computer that I'm still using, and with this version of FCP that I'm using -- so I can't fathom why it won't open.

FCP won't open - no error message

When I try to open FCP from the Dock the little light below the icon lights up for about a second and then nothing happens. When I try to open it from the Applications folder the icon will do it's "zoom" animation but still nothing happens. If I do cmdoptesc it doesn't show up but do cmd+i on the icon it says it was just opened.
I read I should delete my preferences, but I can't find any relating to FCP:
I downloaded Preference Manager and used it to delete FCP preferences but it still won't open.
Here are the basics of my computer:
osx 10.5.5
FCP 6.0.5
Caldigit HDPro 1.6
I realize I have old versions of everything but up until now it all worked.

Use Disk Utility to repair permissions on the system drive.
Restart, try FCP again, post your results.

New install and FCP won't open

Hello,
I am new to FCP. I come from a PC based Editor. After installation FFCP opened once. I closed it and now it won't open. When I attach my AG DV2500 deck it wants to start then just quits. Without the deck attached it says it can't locate the "Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480). Try again or click continue to set external device to none" Then Pof it's gone. How do I set my external device to none?
I have downloaded updates. No help

you might have corrupted your preferences ... how I don't know.
trashing them is always a good place to start when things go awry
also, backing up a good set, that you can revert to, is well worthwhile
there are a couple of utilities that make this quick and painless:

FCP won't open after I tried to install trial software

I downloaded a trial copy of master perfection suite and another Bias product just to check it out. Now Final Cut Pro won't open - it brings up a box that gives me the option to authorize, continue etc, but when i do anything, the box just appears again. I have to Force Quit FCP since everything's grayed out. I've trashed prefs, repaired permissions, restarted but it hasn't helped.

Come on, you've been on the board long enough, You should know better. When you have a stable OS/Application combo, clone your startup drive. This way you can quickly restore your system to it's previous state.<<<</div>
Actually, I didn't know this. I'll have to look into how to do this.
I called Bias tech support - they were great. The suggestion to remove the files from the plugin folder was close - there was a 'components' folder in there as well that needed to go. Once that was removed, I restarted and FCP opened without a problem.

FCP Won't Open

I've been using FC Studio Pro for about a month and am midway through my second project. FCP 5.02 wont open. Information screens will load, check box for External A/V will load, clicking continue clears box and FCP status bar disappears...nothing. I've deleted program, re loaded, reinstalled upgrade to 5.02 and run FCP Rescue 5. All other Studio Pro Applications will load.

Upgrade to mac pro now FCP won't open files

Howdy, i have upgraded from a 20" imac to an 8 core mac pro with 10 gigs ram-1.82 Terra HD and now I can't open the files I was working on with the imac. I can launch FCP but once I try to open a file it crashes the program.
All software is up to date (OSX 10.5.2, FCP 6.0.3).

I have also called tech support and they suggested I reinstall the entire FCS1 & 2 software so I did. Everything seems to be running properly now.
I've learned that using migration assistant isn't such a good idea for FCS but it did save me a lot of time on my other programs so it was helpful.
I appreciate everyone's help and wanted to post what I've learned in case somebody else has had this problem.

New MBP, FCP won't open

I just changed over from a first-gen MBP to a new one, used Migration Assistant to bring everything over, which seems to have worked well. Except for FCP, which will not open. I was on 10.5.whatever and FCP 7, now of course I am on OS 10.6. Having browsed here I see that I really need to do an un-install and re-install from the disks because MA doesn't transfer everything needed for Pro apps. Right?
Last year I upgraded Studio Pro; can I use the upgrade disk to do the install? After all what it uses from the previous version is the serial number, as I understand it. And do I need to un-install everything (the other studio apps, though I don't really use them), and will that upgrade disk install everything I need?

The upgrade disks with serial number, and the serial number from the previous full version you purchased is all you need.

FCP won't open after upgrading to 10.3

After upgrading to 10.3 FCP keeps crushing every time I try to open it.
Here is how it happens:

Any time an application crashes, it's good practice to clear your preference files since those files get updated continually.
When you launch Final Cut after hearing clearing preferences, it should open to a fresh, empty library. If you then navigate to the personal library and it crashes the application, you can be pretty certain that the library is corrupted. At that point, I'd once again clear the FCP preferences an then close. In the Finder, navigate to your Final Cut Backups folder (usually in Movies) and double click the library that's the most recent prior to the start of your permissions problems.
If opening/updating the library backup also crashes Final Cut, shut down the system and restart in Safe Mode. After it completes the log-in process, restart and (once again) clear FCP prefs. Restart your computer and try again.
If none of this works, you could attempt to rebuild your user account – or use the new one as a dedicated editing account (with Fast User Switching enabled it wouldn't be too inconvenient). Sorting out user accounts is tedious and probably should be done by someone who's successfully done it before. It's entirely up to you, but if it came to this I'd either use the new account for video, or I'd do a clean install of the OS. (Naturally, you'll want to have a complete backup and critical settings documented before you do that.)

FCP won't open after electrical storm

I live in Denver and we just experienced an electrical storm that seems to have hurt my Mac. The ethernet ports aren't working and when I try to open FCP, it starts and then quits. I have tried everything to fix the issues but to no avail. I have re-stalled OSX and FCP. The computer was off during the storm, so I'm not sure why it's causing problems. Nothing else seems to be affected other than the ethernet and FCP. Any ideas??? Thanks!!!

When you crash, you get the option of Reporting to Apple? Take that and copy this section of the log:

FCP won't open ... quits suddenly

I've read several recent threads about this problem, but the fixes don't work. I am running FCP Studio on a 27" iMac with OS 10.6.2. The version of FCP in the "get info" window is "5.0.4".
FCP, although an older version, ran just fine until recently: about a week or so ago. I have trashed prefs, repaired permissions, and removed the Quicktime DivX codec, but no joy. My guess is that something has become corrupted, but I can't pin it down. The software was installed by way of a migration when I bought the computer, but I can't reinstall using the program disks because the verification process doesn't see the hardware it expects in order to install.
I'd be grateful for any thoughts as to possible culprits that I haven't tried. Also, I'm not averse to upgrading, but as it worked just fine for several months I wonder if there's a problem that an upgrade wouldn't fix.

The software was installed by way of a migration...
That was your first mistake. Final Cut Studio installs many files at system level, some in folders that are normally invisible to the user. They do not get copied across by the Migration Assistant.

Because FCS 1 (FCP 5.0.4) was written for Power PC only. It is not compatible with any Intel Mac and certainly not with Mac OS X 10.6. The only way to get a stable installation of FCS is to purchase the current version. Assuming that your FCS 1 is a full retail copy and not an Academic version, you qualify for upgrade pricing.

FCP Project file won't open

An FCP project file I worked on this past Friday suddenly won't open. When I try it immediately gives the helpful "general error" message. I tried opening the autosave files as well, with no luck. I tried renaming the project file and manually adding the .fcp extension, but still nothing. I'm not sure why it's doing this, since nothing unusual happened in the last few days. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Huh? According to the requirements for FCP 6, it needs A Macintosh computer with a 1.25GHz or faster PowerPC G4, PowerPC G5, Intel Core Duo, or Intel Xeon processor and Mac OS X v10.4.11 or Mac OS X v10.5.5 or later. How does your computer not fall into this range?

FCP 5.1 file won't open in FCP 7

Hi.
I am at my wits end...I have a FCP 5.1 file that I have been working on for years.
I had to upgrade to FCP 7 for reasons I won't go into and now my FCP 5.1 file won't open.
It is a file with footage from P2 cards. It has magic bullet/looks builder used throughout. I am not sure if that is the issue at one point ONE of the messages I got when it crashed (I got a few different ones at different times) was something about looksbuilder not working right.
In a nutshell, it slowly starts to open and then quits. (It gets to about 33 percent open over the course of 45 minutes and then crashes.)
The file is about half a gig and there is plenty of room on the MAC itself so it shouldn't be that the Mac is overtaxed.
I don't know what to do.
I tried opening various back-up copies, etc. because I thought maybe something was just corrupted. NONE of them open.
I tried deleting render files to limit how much it was trying to process when it opened the thing.
I even tried turning off the external drives that hold the media hoping that if it couldn't find the media it would just open the shell of a file for me and maybe I could reconnect it all later. Obviously, grasping at straws...
I am out of options. Do I just need to wipe my computer and reinstall 5.1 from scratch? That would stink because there is another project being worked on on the computer that is a FCP 7 file.
I tried putting a copy of FCP 5.1 back on the computer (so I have 7 and 5.1 on there now) to get it to open, but FCP 5.1 won't work either now (I get General Error 41 - whatever that means) Maybe you can't have two versions of FCP on the computer? Maybe it thinks it got opened in 7 so now it won't work in 5? even though it never fully opened? Guessing...
I'd appreciate any and all help. All I want to do is open the 5.1 file and save it in FCP 7 and work from there.

Thanks for the response. I did something similar in that I opened the file on another computer that had FCP 7 and it was fine. So I saved that. Then I went to my Mac and tried to open that file and it crashed...but it said something about Looksbuilder...so I contacted them and they had me uninstall, reinstall and then fix the preference files for Looksbuilder and it now opens.

FCP Project File created in 5.1.4 won't open in 5.1

Hi All,
I recently had to replace my hard drive. Things could have been worse, but thankfully I saved a copy of a major project to another drive. I successfully reinstalled all my original software including FCP 5.1. The problem is that I was running 5.1.4 for this project and now the file won't open. (General Error 41)
Is it still possible to find a software update for Version 5.1.4?
I have searched the forum and I suspect that the answer is no. It seems that version 6 is the only version available now.
My back-up plan is to find someone in my area who has the 5.1.4 version to open my project file, then export as an xml file. Then I plan to import the xml into my system with the version of 5.1 and I'm back to work.
It's a big project for us and I could really use some reassurance. Thanks everyone.
