anybody found a solution for this? I searched the forum but the related topics failed to provide useful info. This problem is happening on another system running leopard btw.

lol thanks.... i check his machine and it works fine now. just removed the attached external and hdv deck, set everything except capture to scratch to one of his 5 internal drives and it works... Oh yeah that was a solution i found for playback, render and other miscellaneous problems when working with external drives(which sometimes are full, faulty or just wants to give trouble)... set everything but the capture to scratch to an internal drive.

Final cut won't unhide

I'm having a problem with Final Cut 6.0.6. I hide the application and it won't unhide. I can play the timeline and hear audio but i can't see anything (no interface, no timeline, etc.). The application switcher tells me that it is running. The quit command won't work (neither cmd q nor holding over the icon and clicking quit). The only thing I can do is force quit. Not sure if it is related to the Safari update I did last night or not (all updates are loaded). I seem to be able switch programs and come back to FCP fine unless I use the hide command. Any help is appreciated.

It depends on your work flow and personal preferences David. For instance, I frequently will have any number of other programs like Photoshop, After Effects, Pages, Safari, Mail, etc., open while I'm working in FCP, and will be going back and forth from program to program as necessary. The most comfortable workflow for me personally is to hide and unhide programs as I need them. The down side is that the more programs you have open, the more likely you are to run into sluggish system performance, especially on older or less capable systems.

InDesign won't "unhide"

I'm running Leopard (10.5.4) and InDesign CS3 (Version 5.0.3.662). InDesign sometimes won't "Hide" (Command+H or Option+Click on Desktop) and if by some miracle it does hide, then it won't Unhide. I have to Force Quit and restart it. Never have that problem with anything else I use: Illustrator, Photoshop, Quark, Word, Excel, Lotus Notes, Firefox, etc. Is this a bug? Or is there any way to make it behave?

FWIW, I don't think this is entirely a Leopard issue as we are having the same problem with Tiger PPC installs. Have not tried the Launch, quit, launch workaround....but cmon, really?
To clarify the problem being seen... On G5 PPC, Mac OS 10.4.11, InDesign CS3 will not release the active finder window. By this I mean it will not let you minimize it, hide it, or use any other application without having to quit or click to the desktop numerous times. As soon as you get out of it, it will pop back to the front....try to edit an original in Photoshop and InDesign will not let you into Photoshop. Apple Tab to Photoshop, InDesign will pop up as soon as you are dropped into Photoshop. You get the picture...
Not happening on 10.5 Intel builds.

FCP won't hide

Anyone know why both FCP 5.1.2 on a macbook pro and 5.0.4 on a G5 often refuse to hide after a bit of usage - neither apple-H nor right click in the dock, nor apple-alt-h from other apps will work - and its greyed out in the drop down menu. It usually starts some time into a session. Surely its not something I'm doing wrong on both machines?

Its definitely only an FCP issue - everything else will hide but FCP won't budge. It's happening now.
its a problem for my workflow because often I work between apps and I don't want to see FCP when I'm working in Photoshop or Motion.
I've just shut down FCP and now it hides fine. Tried the activity monitor, I'm not 100% sure what to look for, but last time it wouldn't hide (before I quit and restarted) it was showing about 130mb - there's 2gb in my macbook pro.

FCP won't open certain projects

When I attempt to open certain projects FCP won't open. It starts up then before it opens it shuts down. I'm able to open and work in other projects and sequences.
When I was able to open and work on this particular sequence it seems to shut down when I edited, moved or rendered a still image (jpeg and pdf). I'm wondering if these are corrupt and if so how do I "uncorrupt" them.
I've already trashed preferences a number of times.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well thank you all for your help - but as many of you guessed, it was a PEBKAC issue - namely me!
I was so sure that the versions of FCP were the same, I neglected to look at the 2 relevant "about" pages. Although both FCP's came from the same disk, the one on the lap-top had up-graded itself. Once I upgraded the desk-top to match, everything was rosy.

Help! FCP won't open...

HELP!!!
I was editing using external fw800 drives for my scratch disks. Then a power hickup (I live in Italy) caused my battery backup to flick on and off causing an unintended eject of those drives. I linked the drives back up and shut down and restarted the computer. Now FCP won't open, other programs will. It loads the FCP intro screen, then no interface, back to finder. I've tried opening through my projects, then the program but to no avail....please help!!! My last resort will be reinstalling FCP, but I don't want to do that and lose my settings for my jog shuttle and magic bullet filters....thanks!

FCP won't launch after Archive and Install

After the fiasco of the 1.1 update for the Alu-iMac's I had to do an archive and install on my system to return it to 1.0.
Everything is now working fine but FCP6 won't launch. It bounces in the dock once and then nothing. LiveType and DVD Studio 4 will open but Color, Motion and FCP won't.
I have trashed preferences and repaired permissions with no luck.
Any ideas?

There are files that are not brought along with Archive and Install.
Some are invisible and not accessible without enabling "root" access and even then you have to know exactly which files have to be moved from the 'previous System' folder.
Archive and Install never works with Apple's Pro apps.
If Niel's suggestion doesn't work you'll have to erase your hard drive and reinstall everything making sure you first backup important data to another hard drive.
(don't forget to save your mail and addresses)

FCP won't recognize my new Sony FX7 camera

FCP won't recognize my new Sony FX7 camera even though iMovie does.
I have FCP ver4.5. Is that why?

That is why.
I don't believe v. 6 of FCP recognizes it either and my guess is that capture will be by the Apple Intermediate Codec AIC in iMovie

Qt 7 plays my .mov t fcp won't play

My sad story starts like this:
I have a bunch of MTS files. After many hours of reading, I bought the ClipWrap software.
I am running FCP 6.0.6
Now I have a bunch of MOV files, which play fine on QT 7.
Unfortunatly, fcp won't play these files. I get an OUT OF SPACE error.
Any ideas?

You did not use ClipWrap correctly. You used it to simply unwrap the media to QuickTime. You need to transcode the media in ClipWrap to ProRes.

FCP won't Show/Unhide; Must Force Quit

Always troubleshooting Studio program errors and here's another one...
This just started happening yesterday. I will Cmd+H to hide FCP and am unable to bring the program back up. Right-clicking and selecting "Show" or any of the other options do not work either. I am able to control other programs opened including Safari, LiveType, Yahoo Messenger, Photoshop, Quicktime, etc.
The Force Quit Applications menu does not indicate any (not responding) errors for FCP. The Console.app also does not display any errors or panics. The auto-save function does quick working, however. All recent changes are lost after doing a Force Quit.
This does not happen every time I hide the program, but I'm just working around using it for fear of it crashing.
If you need anymore info from me to help solve this, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm not Mac Savvy so I'll just get that out of the way right now.

Permissions repaired
Have not tried creating new user account.
Will see what FCP Rescue can provide.
The only problem recently was actually with Motion locking up and having a horrible lag. I detail the problem and fix here:

I thought that maybe this was another WMV or Flip4Mac issue but I am not working with any WMV files and there are none on the desktop.

FCP won't open one of its own files.

Hi, everyone.
I have an fcp project that I need to update and modify. I tried opening it, and I got "File Error: Wrong Type". I read this previous post...

...and followed its suggestions. I quit fcp, and tried to open the file again (without the application already being opened). No luck.
Also as suggested, I saved the project file as a txt document, then change it back to an fcp document and open that. No luck again. I get "Unable to open project file".
These remedies worked for the original poster in the discussion, but they haven't worked for me. Anyone have any other ideas?
By the way, this project was created in 2006 on this computer that I'm still using, and with this version of FCP that I'm using -- so I can't fathom why it won't open.

HELP: FCP won't start - crashes on opening

Watching the window, it seems to crash when encountering the following:
"Loading Audio Filters: Major Malfunction: Major Malfunction Demo"
This was a demo of a VST/AU plugin I downloaded. I never used it, and after getting this crash I did a search and deleted everything related to it. Still, it seems to come up in the path.
I have a volume install of FCP (from my job at a university) and won't be able to reinstall it for some time. Any tips?

seems like you missed a bit somewhere ... look in /Library/Audio and ~/Library/Audio , also check for things to do with Pluggo which seems to be involved (?)
you might also download and install the free AU Manager tool and see if that can see and disable this errant plug

FCP won't recognize hi-def camera

I am running FCP 5.0.4 and have been using a Panasonic DV camera with no problems. Today I tried hooking up a Sony HDV camera (HDR-HC7), but Final Cut won't communicate with it. There is software that came with the camera, but it is not compatible with a Mac. I have a coworker running this same setup and it works fine for him. He never installed the software. He does however have a newer version of FCP. Is my version of FCP too old, or do I just not have the proper settings? Thanks!

FCP won't recognize my DV device

I recently upgraded to FCP 5.1.1 and can't get it to recognize my DV. At first FCP would open without the "unable to locate external device" warning and not even show a DV device as an option. Now it shows the warning and just won't acknowledge my camera. I have updated all my software, tried two cameras and two cables, refreshed my devices but nothing works. I installed everything on my old G-4 and it works fine. Any suggestions?

You'll get good advice here and it's worth a visit even if you don't have a problem - you'll learn a lot from reading the posts.
This is a good workaround for curing your camera recognition problem:
First, check that your Easy Setup / Timeline / Camera or Deck Settings are all exactly the same, then making sure your camera or deck is in VTR mode, try to capture again.
FCP uses a different form of QT than iMovie for capturing, so if the camera works in iMovie (or if it's listed in System Profiler) but not FCP, it obviously means your Mac can see the VTR but FCP can't, so you need to do this QuickTime fix.

Follow the instructions carefully and you should have things running in no time but note that if you have QT Pro, you’ll have to re-purchase it.
If the Camera / Deck isn't recognised by iMovie or System Profiler, try resetting the Firewire Bus . . . Turn off the Mac and disconnect the power and all Firewire cables. Leave it for 30 mins then connect back up.
Still not working? Try a different Firewire cable.
Failing all this, try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). The method varies from machine to machine, so visit the Apple site and search for it in support.
Don't use iMovie for capturing - it doesn't give you a timecode and that's very important.

FCP won't open - no error message

When I try to open FCP from the Dock the little light below the icon lights up for about a second and then nothing happens. When I try to open it from the Applications folder the icon will do it's "zoom" animation but still nothing happens. If I do cmdoptesc it doesn't show up but do cmd+i on the icon it says it was just opened.
I read I should delete my preferences, but I can't find any relating to FCP:
I downloaded Preference Manager and used it to delete FCP preferences but it still won't open.
Here are the basics of my computer:
osx 10.5.5
FCP 6.0.5
Caldigit HDPro 1.6
I realize I have old versions of everything but up until now it all worked.

Use Disk Utility to repair permissions on the system drive.
Restart, try FCP again, post your results.

FCP 6 won't unhide.
