FCP 7.0.3 and Canon XL1s

I have just purchased a Canon XL1s and am having huge problems capturing footage of a decent quality using FCP 7.0.3
Having done some searching about the Canon camera and FCP i used, from the 'Easy Setup' menu
Format: PAL
Use: DV-Pal FireWire Basic
When i have captured the footage from the camera it is grainy and looks like it has been recorded from a very substandard device. I have tried a huge combination of settings all to no avail.
On the camera it was set to:
Movie Mode normal
16:9 was enabled
audio  12 bit ST-1 (but the audio sounds good no matter what settings i use to capture)
I have also tried capturing using iMovie and get the same results.
I am using Sony DV premium 60minute MiniDV tapes (both tapes have been brand new)
Any advice would be helpful

The camera definitely recorded in SP, that icon was visible on the viewfinder...
What settings should i be using in FCP to capture the video? From attempted research i found most comments suggesting to use a basic Firewire settings. i have used this in PAL format but the results are poor.
One thing I am confused about is the 32khz or 48khz settings. Which should i be using? I have an older version of FCE 4 where there are many settings for both 32khz and 48khz for DV FireWire but in FCP7 there are only options for 48khz.
Any advice would be welcomed at the moment.
I am also willing to upload clips of what I have to demonstrate visually the poor quality video I am capturing from the Canon

  • FCP 2 doesn't recognize Canon XL1s

Hello. I have Final Cut Express 2.0.3 installed on an iMac G5 10.4.5. FCP will not recognize my Canon XL1s. Not a faulty cable - I've tried two, one brand new. I've tried various Easy Set ups modes. Tried rebooting with all devices unlugged, etc. Nuthin'. If anyone knows of a solution I would appreciate the help. Thanks.

    1. Does the camera work when you use iMovie?
If so, you may have a funky Quicktime installation. Do the full Quicktime reinstall. (see below for directions)
    2. Does the camera work if you have no external hard drive in the firewire chain?
If so, you have the classic 'Canon collision' on the firewire bus. The usual solution is to add a second firewire bus using an add-in PCI card (for desktops) or a PCMCIA card for Powerbooks. Unfortunetly, your computer does not allow either of these options - so your options are:
    a) capture to the system hard drive, unplug the camera, reattach the external drive and move the material over.
    b) try capturing using a different camera that plays better with external hard drives.
    Good luck.

To do a full quicktime reinstall.
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot

  • FCE HD and Canon XL1

New Mac with FCE HD 3.5 preinstalled. Not wanting to connect device just yet as prompted by FCE setup. Noticed that the Canon XL1 was not specifically mentioned as being compatiable in NTSC, though it was listed for PAL. Could someone please advise if the Cannon XL1 is good to go on FCE HD. Thanks in advance.

The drive heads of your internal drive are busy reading and writing data from the OS, any other open apps and background processes (1 reason that you should have as few applications open as possible whilst editing video).
Processing video is very demanding and works with large files, so to capture video to a system drive that is already working hard can tax it to the extent that can drop frames etc.
It's therefore recommended to capture to an external FWHD to reduce the burden on the system drive. Also if you save your project file to your system drive and autosave vault to your external, should you have a drive failure on either drive you have a recent backup. (I also save a copy of my project file to a removable USB flash drive for added security/peace of mind.)
Oh yeah and don't fill either drive more than 90% (80% if possible) as this can cause dropped frames/unpredictable behaviour and that's a best case scenario.
As far as the deck situation applies, before you decide to go for the dedicated deck, you need to consider if you could get away with using a cheap DV camcorder (useful in it's own right - I have one with me at all times - you don't know when you may come across that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity - just think if Abraham Zapruder didn't have his Bell & Howell Zoomatic 8mm movie camera with him in Dallas on Nov 22, 1963?)
Unless, of course, you are going do a lot of work with it or money's no object.

  • Unable to output from FCP to Canon XL1.

I have an eMac with Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD. I also have a Canon XL1 3 CCD camcorder.
I have no problem capturing footage from my camcorder to my eMac on FCP. I can also connect my Canon to my VCR and record off my camcorder to my TV, as well as play the tape on my camcorder to watch it on TV.
However, I cannot output from FCP to my camcorder. The 4 to 6 FireWire is attached to both the camera and the eMac and I checked the Log and Capture feature and FCP does recognize a camera or deck is attached. I've been trying to output it using manual record in which I press record on my camcorder and play the playhead on FCP. As I record, there is no picture on my viewfinder, nor any audio being recorded and when I play it back, I just get this blank blue screen, but the timecode is recorded.
    Am I missing something here?

    ensure the following are set
View>Video Playback>Firewire Apple 720x480 (NTSC or PAL - whatever is appropriate)
    View>Audio Playback>Audio follows video
    View>External Video>All Frames
If this isn't what you are set to do, you won't be sending video out to your recorder.

  • Connection problems with FCE HD and a Canon XL1

I just can not get the system to see the camera so I can capture. I have an external Firewire drive as my scratch disc. Any advice? Thanks!

Ian & Tom, First of all thanks for your ideas and quick replies, I really appreciate it.
I'm using a (Belkin) FW hub but have re-routed things so the camera is going directly to one of the computer's two FW ports. Have tried all suggestions provided in your posts but the best I'm able to get is a message that reads, "Unable to initialize video deck. You may still use Capture Now." When I go to capture mode, however, no controls are usable and it says, "not communicating."
Tom, I went to System Profiler and am not seeing the Canon. My computer has two FW ports and I'm only seeing the hub (and not the camera plugged into the other port). What's strange is that the hub is showing an "unknown device" but there's not an unaccounted for device plugged into the hub. I've tried the camera in both of the computer's FW ports to no avail. I'm guessing that's the weak link.
    Regarding full system info...
    - PowerMac G4, dual 1.27 GHz PowerPC
    - OS X 10.4.10
    - FCE HD 3.5.1
    - EZ Quest external FW drive
    - Canon XL1 (but my material was shot with a Panasonic DVX 100A, I'm just using the older Canon to capture for editing to save wear on the Panasonic's playback deck -- but the Panasonic connects just fine)
Any other info needed? You guys totally rock for trying to help me with this -- good karma!

  • Problems with FCP 5.1.4 and OSX 10.4.9

I upgraded to Tiger, installed the new FCP Studio and everything was working fantastic.
The next morning there was a software update for Tiger and FCP-5.1.4, it's been a nightmare ever since. When I restarted FCP would not recognize my Sony HDR FX1.
I had this problem once before with 4.5 and I fixed it by re-installing FCP and doing the upgrades, so that's what I did with 5 but this time there was a new problem. It wouldn't let me work on anything that I had opened since I did the software update, so I had to do the update again and then FCP wouldn't recognize my camcorder again on startup. If you pressed log and capture you could control the camera but no capture was possible.
So I re-set the easy set-up and presto! everything was fine and I worked productively for a few days.
But then I had to capture some SD from my Canon GL2 so I reset all the settings for DV NTSC and reset the easy set-up for DV NTSC but now FCP won't recognize my GL2 on start-up. If I click log and capture I can control the camera but no capture.
My next try to solve my problem was to downgrade back to my original 10.4.6 and FCP 5.1
That put be back to square one and everything works fine again except I am left with the problem that everything that I worked on after I did the update won't open, I get error 41.
Now I know this is because I am now trying to work on these projects with 5.1 after they were worked on in 5.1.4. But the problem is that everytime I update to 5.1.4 I can no longer capture or print to tape.
I tried the trashing the FCP prefs thing and the repairing permissions thing but I can't seem to solve the problem.
Has anyone else had any problems using FCP 5.1.4 and OSX 10.4.9?

Not sure how you tried to install 10.4.8 but if all
else fails you can always reinstall the original
operating system that came with your Mac using 'Erase
and Install' then upgrade it to 10.4.8 - probably in
    stages.
Erase and install should be used as a last resort! A better option is to use the "archive and install" feature. It renames your old system folder and creates a new one for the OS you just re-installed. That way you don't have to reinstall everything, your user accounts and emails should all still be there, and if something doesn't work, you have your old system folder to pull things like preference files out of.

  • FCE: Capturing footage from my Canon XL1

Got FCE and when capturing footage from my Canon XL1 I get the video however there is no audio!
Tried capturing footage via iMovies and works no problem!
Not sure if this has anything to do with it but I'm using a external mic. on my XL1 into one ch. on the audio inputs. Also scratch disks is on a external 1TB WD drive. Finally tried virtually all the set-ups on the 'easy set-up' but still no joy.
Can anyone throw me a life line on this one?!

sorry I should have made myself abit clearer.....when the tape is played back in my XL1 I can hear audio when my headphones are pluged into the camera also the camera has audio monitors which I can see movement verifying there is audio. However in FCE I don't see any audio level movement.
In terms of equip. I just have a external WD 1TB drive (USB), firewire cable for video camera and the USB cable for the keyboard & mouse.
Additional application: Flip video s/w (however had fce issue prior to installing this).

  • Canon XL1s DV Camera – Utilising 4 channels of recorded audio in PE8

    Hi,
I have created a number of interviews using the Canon XL1s and have chosen on the camera to record 4 channels of audio (2x stereo). The first audio pair utilizes a stereo microphone mounted on top of the camera. The second audio pair is connected via the cameras auxiliary XLR connectors to 2x radio mics.  If I play the recording back on the camera I can hear all four channels. When I upload via fire-wire into PE8 I can only hear (and see) the first pair of channels and cannot find the second ones anywhere… Is this a limitation of PE8, or have I missed something…
    All suggestions gratefully received..

    Neville,
You are correct, in that PrE cannot Capture the second stereo-pair, i.e. channels 3 & 4. This is a limitation in both PrE and PrPro too.
For SD material, most folk recommend SceneAlyzer as a Capture program. For HD, HDVSplit is the recommended Capture program. Many feel that these are the Capture modules, that SHOULD have been incorporated in both Adobe NLE's.
The 4 Audio channels are the problem. IIRC, there is also a Canon Capture program, usually shipped with the camera (some Sony's also have 4-channel Audio), and it will bring in the Video and all 4 channels. Not sure of the name, but I do recall mention being made of it.
For some background on the XL1's 4-channel Audio, you might want to search the PrPro forum, as this has been discussed in several threads in the past. You will find a lot more detail, than my feeble memory allows me to share with you.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Canon XL1S 16:9

    Hi All,
A client is going to shoot footage using Canon XL1S in its 16:9 option. Will I have any problems using PE7 HDV preset? I will also be shooting using my Canon XHA1 in HDV 16:9. I know thw XL1S is standard, so I will be mixing HD 16:9 with standard 16:9, and I am ok with that.
    Thanks! ST

The XL1 is a miniDV camcorder shooting standard-definition video. I would not try to mix it with HDV in an HDV project.
If you do this, you will need to scale the miniDV footage by over twice the vertical and twice the horizontal resolution in order to fit the frame -- and it's likely to look fuzzy and pixelated. You will also need to reverse the interlacing for the miniDV footage (since AVIs use lower field first resolution and MPEGs use upper field first) and you will need to continually render the miniDV footage as you work.
It's just not a good mix, and it's not likely to produce good results, IMHO.

  • FCP 7 will Log and Tansfer but not complete an .mts

Somehow I have managed to get FCP 7 to open and read an SD Card from my Canon. It will acknowledge the files and even give a thumbnail. I can get it to start converting the .mts intpo FCP7 and when it gets to the end it stops and give me an error. Has anyone seen a way around this? Is there a converter (free or Very cheap) that will maintain the quality of my footage. I have tried 2 converters and it trashes my footage.

The information is proprietary to the company I did the video for but I can post a still of both the FCP and the VLC. Hopefully you can see what I mean. FCP is top pic and VLC is bottom pic with a little interlacing but you get the idea.

  • FCP X is loading and loading with the colour wheel revolving for ever for the past few days.

FCP X is loading and loading with the colour wheel revolving for ever, for the past few days.
FCP X was working fine in my new 15" Mac book pro (Retina display with Mountain Lion 10.8.2) for the past one month. Now a days, each time I try to open the FCP X, the same non-stop colour wheel is rotating, trying to restore one of my project. It continues even for hours together.  Finally I am force quiting the application.
How do I come out of it ? Will I be able to recover my project.  I didn't do any backup in particular.
Is backing up on the regular basis is required?
I tried the following guidance by Apple,
In the Finder, hold down the Option key and choose Library from the Go menu.
In the Library folder that opens, go to Application Support/Final Cut Pro.
Drag the Layouts folder from the Final Cut Pro folder to the Trash.
    Still my problem is continued
    Help me

This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance - you may have already addressed some of the items but it's worth checking.
Make sure you're using the latest version of the application - FCP X 10.0.5 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.5.
First, check that you have at least 20% free space on your system drive.
For smooth playback without dropping frames, make sure 'Better Performance' is selected in the FCP X Preferences - Playback Tab.
If you have not already done so, move your Projects and Events to a fast (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD. Make sure the drive's formatted OS Extended (journalling's not required for video). You should always keep at least 20% free space on the Hard Drives that your Media, Projects and Events are on.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install of the OS would be recommended.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
If your playback in FCP X is not good, I strongly recommend you use ProRes 422 Proxy - it edits and plays back like silk because the files are small but lightly compressed (not much packing and unpacking to do) - but remember to select 'Original or Optimised Media' (FCP X Preferences > Playback) just before you export your movie, otherwise it will be exported at low resolution.
The downside of 'Proxy' is that it looks awful. DON'T use Proxy when you're assessing things like video quality - especially focus.
If you have plenty of processor power, for the ultimate editing experience, create Optimised Media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Personally, I work with XDCAM EX and h.264 from a Canon DSLR. Both of these run fine with my system, but I do transcode multicam clips.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot. There's a great application for this, called Event Manager X - for the tiny cost it's an invaluable application.
    http://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/EventManagerX/
Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences (under Playback) - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.
If none of this helps, you might have incompatible or corrupt media or project files. Move ALL your Events and Projects to temporary folders so that FCP X doesn't find them on launch. If it launches OK, re-introduce the Events and Projects one at a time, re-launching each time, so that you can track down the corrupt or incompatible files.

  • Canon XL1 - Saving menu

Hi guys, sorry about posting a camera question on these forums, but thought someone may be able to help me.
I am lending a Canon XL1 out to a friend for a few interviews he is doing. I want to make things as easy for him as possible, so I preset all the menu items. Every time a battery is removed, the menu resets however. Is there a way to save the menu settings to ROM?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi All
I have been battling to get my XL1 and iMac talking to each other for awhile now. Camera was fine with previous computers but cannot even be recognized by the imac (10.5.8). DV in comes up in the camera viewfinder, tried an old dv - firewire cable, tried a new dv - firewire cable, tried an Elura 2 with computer and also not recognized.
Was there some update that came along that Canon was not aware of or what? called Canon and they said must be cable/computer port (of course that's what they said). Cannot find any answers to this but I do see plenty of similar situations on the net to make it seem like there's more to this lack of communication than meets the eye.
If anyone has a suggestion I would be glad to try it.
    Thanks

  • IMac & FCP7 connect to canon xl1s

I have an iMac with Final Cut Pro 7 also iMovie & QuickTime none of the above will recognise my video camera Canon XL1S.
I'm using a FireWire 800 cable to connect my camera to my iMac 9 pin male to 4 pin male FireWire lead.
    Which apple reccomends ?
I have my camera in VCR play mode & tried log & capture etc with FCP & also tried importing to iMovie none if these will recognise my camera.
An suggestions or solutions to this ?
    Thanks.

Launch the Image Capture app. It's located in your Applications folder.
    Connect the video camera.
Bottom left side of the Image Capture window select iMovie from the: Import To  pop up menu.
If iMovie is not available from that list, cick Other then navigate to the Applications folder then select iMovie.
