FCP 7 & 3 Monitors

Hello, I currently have a 2009 Mac Pro, with two AOC 2752VH 27" LED HD Monitors, and one Samsung P2570HD 24.6-Inch Full 1080p HDTV LCD Monitor. How would I go about setting up Final Cut Pro 7 so the two AOC monitors are for the editing, and the Samsung monitor is for the playback output?
Thanks!
Manny Rothman

You need a video output device that will utilize an available PCIe slot in your Mac Pro to provide video to your Samsung monitor. Some examples:

  • FCP two monitors, 2nd won't display playback anymore

I have two Cinema monitors specifically for working with FCP. The second monitor played what I see on my canvas for two weeks. When I started FCP the second monitor went black ready to play the canvas.
It no longer does this. The first indication of trouble was when I brought a motion template to FCP which was an HD clip. The second monitor would not play it, when I stop the playback I can see the frame it was on. Then today, the second monitor will no longer work with FCP.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. FCP6.

try pressing Cmd-F12 (thats View menu *> External Video > All Frames*)
also check that your second monitor is correctly assigned for preview playback
eg View menu *> Video Playback > Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Full-Screen*

  • Trouble Viewing FCP on Monitor

Not really an FCP question, but I'm stuck. I've been using a camcorder (GL1) to convert the dv signal to analog to view my FCP projects on my monitor. I finally bought the Canopus ADVC110 that seems to be the converter of choice. It did output to my monitor, but the picture looked a bit off. It looked as if I raised my black- or mid-levels in the 3-way color corrector, or as if I increased the brightness of the scene. I then recorded a still frame onto VHS thru the camcorder and then through the ADVC110. The change in picture was very noticable on the ADVC part. I changed all cords to the same result. Is this common with the ADVC110 or perhaps I have a defective unit. Also, are there any other recommendations for a dv to analog converter (for less than $500). Thanks in advance for any help.

    Frank,
This is a new one. As the old proverb goes, "a man with one watch always knows the time, a man with two can never be sure."
What happens if you try another camera and/or converter (aka Option 3)?
People have generally said good things about Canopus products around here but you never know. You could go up market to something like the AJA io series, but that would be like purchasing framing hammer to swat a fly.
    Good luck. Please report back.

  • Newbie FCP HDV monitoring and RAID questions

    Hello forum gods.
First off, I must confess - I am a defector seeking assylum in the the Mac camp. I am a born-and-bred Windows person, and a longtime Avid editor who just made the jump and purchased the Mac-Pro with all the bells and whistles, and FCP Studio. I did this to accompany my JVC ProHD cam and deck.
I have no idea what I am going to do with the time I used to spend scanning for viruses and trojans. I am thinking I may write a novel, or build a house by hand - but that is another topic.
Now that the confession is out of the way - we can move on to the actual questions.
    <big breath>
Ok - so I have this new fancy shiny computer, deck, camera, and monitors - one of which is the Sony 23" that is comparable to the Apple 23. I do not have a Kona or Blackmagic card because I was told that I did not need one right away - though I do plan on getting one later. For monitoring, I was going to use the firewire in/out of the JVC deck and convert the signal via the component outs to another HD monitor. This would bring the total monitors on the system to 3 - a 19" for the edit screen, the 23" for the video playback in FCP and the braodacast HD for monitoring the final signal.
    Is this workable?
Now for the second question - storage and RAID.
Most of my footage will be either SD or HDV. Eventually I'll be going to XDCam, but that's a bit down the road. I have the internal 250 gigger that came in the Mac, and I purchased additional 500gb SATA II drives that I was going to use to set up a RAID. Should I do this internal or external? Will it work? What else do I need? What is the meaning of life?
Thanks for your replies. My credit card is anxiously awaiting your suggestions
    G5 Quad Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Some question back atcha:
    1) When you say you'll be working in SD, what do you
mean? Typically, SD refers to uncompressed 601, 720 X
    486. Or are you referring to DV NTSC?
DV NTSC and/or the myriad formats that the JVC100 can do.
    2) Your Profile says you have a Quad G5, but your
post says it's a MacPro. Which is it?
Sorry - Consider that my first public gaffe in the new Mac world. I bought the Mac Pro. Time to change my profile. I bought it last week - it isn't even here yet. Supposed to be delivered today...
    3) Are you wanting to see your HDV sequence on a
external video monitor while you're editing? If so,
you'll need the Kona card (or the Blackmagic card,
but I don't do BMD, only Aja, so I don't know about
    the Blackmagic offerings.)
I've read about the Cinema Preview function and although I know that this isn't the best idea for monitoring, wouldn't it work? On the JVC deck, it has the firewire output/input and component outs (among others) so in E-to-E mode, couldn't the deck act as my converter for monitoring on the broadcast monitor? If not - I have a line on a Kona-2 with the BOB for about $1400. Deal or no deal?
Now as for your RAID question, you can do either
internal or external. Just don't include the drive
that contains your system folder in the RAID.
I was planning on using the 250 for all my system files and the 2-500 giggers as my edit drives. Sound good?
EDIT: As for the meaning of life, go ask your father.
Gaah... He handed me "The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and told me to get to reading....
Thanks for the help. Lord knows I need it.

  • FCP video monitoring through AJA's T-Tap or  UltraStudio Mini Monitor

    Hello,
I'm working with dailies that are ProRes LT 2K resolution (2048 x 1152) for an offline cut. I'd like to use an HDTV 1080P for a video monitor (a regular HDTV, not a broadcast monitor). From what I understand, I can use either a T-Tap or an UltraStudio Mini Monitor converter to send video signals to the TV set from FCP.
Before I start buying this stuff, I just want to confirm with people on this forum who has experience with these set ups. My question has 2 parts:
    1. Does this set up work or do I need to get other gears? (FCP out to converter through Thunderbolt and HDMI to HDTV)
    2. I'm leaning toward the UltraStudio Mini Monitor mainly because of cost. I don't foresee getting a 2K monitor any time soon, so I wouldn't need the T-Tap for that purpose. However, since I'm working with 2K materials, and the HDTV is 1080P, can the Mini Studio convert (or down-res) it to 1080?
    Thanks in advance.
    Thien

I can only speak to the T-Tap...that's all I've tested.  It works great with FCP...and AJA works with 2K footage, scaling it down to 1080.  I'm not sure if the mini monitor does this, or if you need the Decklink 4K for that.
No other converters are needed.  That's all you need....either one.
I will say that AJA has a better track record of compatibility...they seem to be the first ones there with drivers for the new software and updates, and the most stable with edit systems.  And their tech support is top notch. That, to me, is worth the extra cost.
Contact Tech Support at AJA.com and ask them if it will work wiht 2K footage in FCP...they'll give you an answer.

  • STP won't use my audio interface for monitoring, but FCP will

Hi, I've been using FCP for a long time, with my MOTU 896 audio interface (firewire). It works fine with FCP for monitoring the mix, playback, everything.
Today, I decided to try STP for the first time (up until now, I've been doing all the audio within FCP). I cannot seem to get the MOTU to work for audio monitoring unless I change the System Sound Preferences to have the MOTU selected (and not the built-in line out).
The STP Manual says that "by default, it will use the settings in the System Sound Prefs", but that you can change it. However, nothing I do seems to make any difference.
    - I set the Preferences:Recording tab to Monitor the MOTU 896.
    - In the Recording tab of the Inspector to Monitor the MOTU 896.
But it still plays back through whatever is selected in the System Sound Panel. I can change this to the MOTU, but I would rather have my system sounds playing through the regular built-in line out.
Am I missing a setting here? Thanks!
(This is STP 1.1, on a Mac Pro Intel, running OS X 10.4.8.)
    MacPro Quad Core 3.0 Ghz / G4 Dual 800 QuickSilver / PBook G4 Titanium   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Go to the AudioMidi Setup app and select the MOTU 896 as Default Output and built-in audio as System Output. That way, the system sounds will still use the built-in audio but STP will use the MOTU. Unfortunately, every other app (like iTunes or QuickTime) will use the MOTU as well. STP doesn't have any preferences to select its own interface like any other pro DAW out there. Maybe STP 2.0 will fix that?

  • Sound but no video on tv monitor when capturing/viewing timeline

Can someone please suggest a solution to my problem? It seems that my settings have all of a sudden changed and I can no longer view the video on my tv monitor when capturing or when playing the clips in my timeline. I've already checked to see that I'm using "firewire" settings.
Any ideas what the settings should be?
    Thanks!

I'm gonna jump in here as I'm in the same boat....
I'm having trouble connecting my camera as a d to a converter for monitoring.
Firewire out from computer to DV Camera / camera analog rca out to monitor. Camera shows input from lens on monitor. FCP is set to - video playback>firewire>ntsc. External video> all frames.
What do I need to do to allow throughput from FCP - camera - monitor?
    Thanks for the tag-along....

  • Monitoring HDV via SD monitor with new feature in FCP6?

Is anyone using the new FCP6 HDV>SD Monitoring feature successfully?
I have been checking the boards, but haven't heard any feedback yet.
Ok, I know, even I get tired of this topic, and I do realize that an MXO box and an I/O Board is the way to go for HDV monitoring. However, I was curious about the prospect of FCP6 providing a Firewire preview of HDV sequences to a SD monitor, but so far I am pretty disappointed with the result. I do get moving images on my SD monitor, but they are low-rez and low FPS.
Wondering if its my hardware or other setup issue, or it this feature still basically unavailable? If anyone can at least report that it works for them, I'll explore my setup further. Any suggestions are of course appreciated as well.
    Dual G5 2.0, Dual 23" Cinema Displays, 2.5 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   FCP 6.0.1, DVDSP 4.0.3, HVR-Z1U, HVR-HC3, HVR-M10U

I have a HDV timeline, View option set to Firewire NTSC, and the Firewire out to my HDV Deck (set up, however, as a DV deck through the deck menu). It's the basic FCP>Camera>Monitor setup that I've always used for monitoring DV footage, but FCP6 promised to do it for HDV.
I'm still wondering if it is even possible to get it to work the same...

  • FCP Display Gamma and brightness shiftsng a broadcast

I am well aware of the standard recommendations for using a video monitor for critical evaluation of color and density.
Having said that, however, I have been working on using a well calibrated Sony Trinitron computer monitor, and I have found a way, both with FCP and Color, to get visually fine results output to DVD via Compressor. My solution is to use the Trinitron calibrated with a Spyder 2 to a normal 6500K color temperature, and a gamma of 1.45. This yields very good matches using instrumentation, and visually between a calibrated HD Sony SXBR, Photoshop on the computer monitor, and FCP with monitor gamma of 1.45.
My question is why the monitor gamma needs to be tweaked this much to get good results with FCP. This seems to be the cause of what folks refer to as a "dark" shift when images are displayed by FCP.
I am hoping that some of those folks that have delved into the innards of FCP can enlighten me. I have detailed data as well, if anyone cares.

Not familiar with FCE. Did you try the other advice offered in this thread and go to the Apple Menu > System Preferences and click on the Displays Icon.
When that opens click on the Color Tab.
Verify that your setting is correct for your display.
Also, what are the properties of your source video?

  • Conversion unit to output FCP firewire to NTSC?

I'm looking for a no frills external conversion unit to output FCP through firewire to an NTSC monitor, ideally to an HD NTSC monitor.
    Any suggestions?
    Ben

    Hi David,
Three questions (I scanned your suggested URL twice but still wasn't sure).
    1. With the Matrox can I run a clip from the FCP timeline, or a Quicktime movie, and see it fullscreen on the external monitor ... or do I get the FCP Apple monitor display with all the FCP windows open (as in how the boys demo the software in the trade shows)?
    2. It says 'Broadcast Quality' but will it output to an HD consumer TV?
    3. I've got a Sony HDV camera. Some people say I can use that as the interface, but I haven't been able to make it work. And some people say it won't work. If it's SUPPOSED to work, the manual says nothing, Sony's website says nothing ... and I can't figure what buttons to click to get it to work.
I'd be satisfied with an NTSC signal out from the HD timeline ... just to have the TV monitor image to do the colour correcting.
    Thank you most kindly,
    Ben

  • Flickering footage on monitor at 23.98p (final cut pro 7)

    Hi ,
    Can anyone help?
I am getting video Flickering footage on monitor at 23.98p using FCP 7
    monitor is sony lmd 2110w
    Thanks

    >How do i get fcp to change to 29.97 video output signal via FCP?
When you have a video IO card installed, this is an option.
    >Is it possible without the extra hardware?
    No.
    >WIll that effect the quality or sequence of the footage?
    Not at all.

  • Problem with monitoring

I have a problem when i monitor thru my BlackMagic Design Decklink to my video monitor. I see my 16/9 anamorphic image in letterbox. I have to zoom in my image in my monitor settings to see it in full frame. When i'm in FCP, the monitoring thru the same card is right. The problem is only in Color. Anybody can help me?

    Final cut sequence settings : PAL 720 * 576
BlackMagic settings in final cut : PAL 10 bit 720*576
Color dispaly settings : Video output PAL 10 bit
Type of monitor : PAL TV connected via composite cable
Like i said with that setup, everything's OK in FCP, not good in Color. Also, it worked OK with Color for 2 years before that.
I just found a workaround!! I set the Color video output to HD 1080i and in the preference of the BlackMagic i use the process "HD to SD anamorphic" and then it works OK. It's weird of having to do this but that works.

  • 10.1.3 is dogging and freezing

Haven't used fcp for a month or so and now have the new yosemite updates.  I'm bringing in a hour long 96 meg  mp4 video and it takes minutes to be useable and then portions are not useable and cpu is not really being used but fcp stalls and quits....  frustrating-   maybe this has to do with the mp4 but it plays fine in quicktime.
So I re exported the mp4 as a .mov  from quicktime and bring that into fcp and the video representations are coming up super slow in the library clips. they are just blue boxes.  I drag the clip down to the edit window and it's just showing blue too.  I try playing it and it freezes and quits on me....
All my older movies are showing as blue boxes too and slowly populating.  the cpu load is below 6% for fcp.   and it just quit on me AGAIN!!!  What the heck is going on??  It's been 30 minutes and 5 restarts...

Thanks for your attentions.   It was the movie that was the problem.
I did delete pref's and was shocked to see all my video's "were gone"... pretty scary for me since the way fcp is laid out is still a bit nebulous for me... I went into time machine to try to recover and ended up clicking on fcpbundle to bring back the original movies... but in any case I tried editing this same movie in iMovie and had similar trouble too...  so I suspected the movie even though it played fine in quicktime and converted fine (by quicktime) from mp4 into .mov  both mp4 and mov were still causing trouble.   SO  I reformatted the movie with compressor and wow did that take a long time- for a 90 meg movie on a top notch iMac it was running at like 200% cpu for maybe an hour and for a large portion the activity monitor indicated compressor not responding and the progress bar didn't hardly move.
Then I went back to fcp (deleted that "bad" movie) and used this reformatted movie and all is back to normal and very responsive.
So if anything for apple, there should be some indication that this movie (which came from a screen save session of Zoom webinar) is holding things up-  the fcp activity monitor did not show any unusual cpu activity (like 5%) and I didn't see any reason to think that this particular movie was causing problems... but apparently fcp was running background trying to "bring in" this movie...  and all the other movies I had in fcp were also showing blank/blue because of this tie up.  I would think that fcp would be amping up the activity to do this conversion - but all it did was have non-responsiveness and shutting downs.

  • RGB import level conversion or not

I am trying to understand how to import RGB still and video digital files into FCP and make the levels come out correctly. This is not an analog setup question.
I find that when I generate a gray bar image in Photoshop and import it into FCP, that the gray levels shift somewhat. Specifically:
0% gray lum goes to 0% in FCP waveform monitor
10% gray lum goes to 18%
50% gray lum goes to 52%
100% gray lum goes to 100%
It doesn't seem to make any difference whether the file is based on an NTSC or Adobe RGB profile. The sequence settings are for NTSC CCIR 601/DV, process max white as white. Render RGB or YUY doesn't matter.
    a) Should these numbers match? If so, how do you process the image file correctly?
    b) Does a 18% in the FCP waveform display show up as 10% luminance on a properly calibrated and connected NTSC display? I.E. don't worry about it, the NTSC monitor corrects it.
    thanks

Thanks Graeme, I missed the article the first time around.
I tried the 0.8 gamma correction in Photoshop, and it sure gets a lot closer. But it looks like I need to generate a custom curve correction fo really make it come out where it should.
This sure seems harder than it should be.

  • Weird Audio Editing Issue: Importing Room Tone causes beeps on timeline

Okay, I'm fairly new to Final Cut so I'm sure there's a simple fix for this I'm just missing, but I need some help. I'm working on a nearly complete sequence, using the audio mixing set-up. I tried to import room tone to tracks 7 and 8, and for some reason, whenever I do this, these thin red bars appear in intervals at the top of my timeline, and when I do play back, everytime the playhead hits these red bars, I get two beeps. I can't figure out how to get rid of it. Any suggestions on what's causing this?
    -Jett

More than likely you need to increase the number of tracks fcp can monitor in real time. This setting is in user settings: general under real time audio mixing. Try increasing the number of tracks.
It's also possible that this roomtone settings don't match your sequence settings or are in a heavily compressed format such as mp3. If so, use compressor to convert your tracks to 48k 16 bit (probably).
