FCP 7 and iChat Theater resolution question?

Is there any possible way to tweek the output of FCP7 to get a better image out of the box into iChat? I work in DVPROHD 720p 59.97 and the iChat window is pixelated as **** and I cannot even make out the lower 3rds or any of my fullscreens, seems like this feature was an after thought with no controls at all. I wanted to get this upgrade because my sling box got bricked from the last firmware update and I do not want to spend the money Sling wants to get it fixed. I figured if Sling can do this for regular tv, why can't Apple? I guess because they do not have a hardware accelerator box to make things look better over the net, since this is not the primary function of FCP. But my situation demands it, I live in Portland, my boss lives in Alameda, and posting proofs via iWeb takes render time, albeit only about 25mins now that I can use all my cores via compressor now, so it's not that big of a deal, but being able to make changes on the fly is huge.

Problem solved, the laptop I was using in my test bed was an older modle G4 iBook, I guess the whole thing hinges on processor speed, although it's processor caps at 1.42Ghz, not slow but not that fast either, I am getting more memory for it soon, see if that does not perc it up a little. I benched it with my moms MacBook pro 17inch and vouala! Clean, perfect image with tc, looks awesome! Moving onto Snow Leopard!

  • Flash - how is the HD support - and HUGE image resolution question

    Hello Flash Forums,
It's been a while since I posted, but I would love to get some information from some of the old pros on here as to best practices using flash for large scale environmental displays:
    1. Flash supports High Definition correct? I did a google search, and see that it does - but unsure whether I need a plug-in or it's just a setting? My question is more along the lines of - can the flash animation be highDef, or only the videos it displays?
    2. I am working on a very large (like 40ft tall) environmental graphic, and curious if anyone can tell me how you deal with images at that size? I remember vaugely, that they don't need to be 300dpi, but do i still need to maintain a certain resolution?
Thanks for any help you can provide~!
    B

Any limiting factors you'll be dealing with are likely more to do with what will actually be running/playing your Flash content and feeding that to this display. Whoever is responsible for setting up the computer system that displays this could answer that. Find out the resolution of their display set up. It will probably be a projection setup, that shows whatever media at a blown-up size. Ask them if 1080 HD video will work, and if they have used that before, and how did it look, etc.
If the display ends up having a resolution of something significantly higher than what a graphic designer's "high" resolution monitor is, you don't necessarily have to have your Flash showing at 100% and fill all those pixels. You can have good results creating your Flash at a reasonale width & height, and then scaling that to 150%, 200%, etc.
Flash has no problems dispalying 1080 HD video, and nothing is needed other than the Flash plugin. There continue to be Flash Player updates for improved video support, so be sure you get the latest version installed on whatever computer is playing this. YouTube started showing full HD size (1080) a while ago, and so you can always refer to that site to see how smooth the videos are.

  • 4:2:2 and image sequence resolution question.

As I understand it, 4:2:2 is the best res to work with when compositing. If I pull a image sequence say from something other than 4:2:2, say DV, does the image sequence still maintain the res? Or since I am dealing with an image, .tiff, the res does not make a difference as long as the image is not compressed. Any insight would be helpful.
    Thanks,
    Ed

    Wolf359,
"4:2:2" denotes the luma/chroma channel compression.
Compression (image sampling quality) is independent of resolution (picture size). Those two variables together determine file size.
Check out these two sites for in-depth info on compression & video formats:

  • Dysfunctional iChat theater

I am very disappointed with iChat theater.
    - It is unusable for Keynote sharing because the image quality is awfully bad, and slides are not readable
    - when sharing iPhoto or another document, the iSight video is not transmitted together with the iPhoto/Keynote etc. video.
This is not even conform to the presentation on Apple's website http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/ichat.html
This has been tested between 2 brain new MacBook and MacBook Pro 17, with Leopard.
I am very disappointed. This worked fine several months ago in Leopard betas, as shown at the the WWDC presentation.
Has Apple considered that iChat quality was not critical for Leopard 10.5.0?
I can just hope so, and wait for a better iChat in 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 ...

For all users who share the iChat Theater image quality concerns here:
As shown in the image I posted above, iChat Theater image quality is certainly lower than looking at the actual document on your screen. Here are some thoughts for your consideration.
    (1) In addition to posting here in this user forum, you can use iChat Feedback to send your comments and suggestions directly to Apple. (For other issues, use Product Feedback for the product most closely related to your concerns.)
You will not likely get a response from Apple by using "Feedback", but at least you can be certain that Apple will see your comments for consideration in future products or updates.
    (2) Given its current image quality limitations, perhaps we do not yet correctly understand iChat Theater's intended use, at least in its present implementation.
Searching your Mac's iChat Help for "Hosting an iChat Theater presentation" clearly tells us that "iChat Theater lets you present slide shows in an iChat video window." We know that slide shows of pictures and large text files work, but small text fonts become illegible in the iChat Theater window.
While pondering this fact, it occurred to me that I can only read the large print in my local cinema movie theater. Small print is illegible there, too. For iChat Theater to truly be a "Theater", it's current implementation seems to me to make more sense as a slideshow presentation rather than as a document sharing function.
For sharing information-dense documents formatted with smaller fonts, the only iChat workarounds to I know iChat Theater's current image quality limitation are:
    (a) using iChat's Send File function to transfer a copy of the file itself, or
    (b) viewing (with editing capability) the document via Sharing your screen.
There are limitations and drawbacks to either alternative, but they do provide other ways to share documents that do not lend themselves to a "slideshow" presentation unless they are reformatted.
    (3) Understanding that normal iChat video quality is dependent upon available internet connection bandwidth and processor load, I tried a couple of tests:
    (i) To make sure that processor power limits are not adversely impacting iChat Theater image quality, I have tried iChat Theater with no other applications running and with several applications with high processor demands operating while I show and iChat Theater presentation.
(ii) I also tried making the iChat video window larger and smaller to see whether the smaller image and concomitant lower video processing demands would improve image quality.
(iii) I even tried doubling my internet service bandwidth (to 1 mbps up / 12 mbps down.)
None of these tests resulted in any noticeable iChat Theater image quality improvement on my dual-processor G5 Mac. Therefore, I know of no user-controllable way to improve iChat Theater performance at this time. I plan to use the workarounds above and wait to see whether the next update changes iChat Theater.

  • Can I toggle the video image on and off in iChat Theater with Keynote?

It seems to me that in the Leopard presentation in the Apple booth at MWSF when exhibiting iChat Theater with a Keynote presentation they were able to switch between two views. One was just a simple head-on view of the Keynote file. The other had the Keynote screen angled away slightly and there was a typical video chat display in the lower left of the screen. Now that I am trying to use iCT I only see the view with the angled screen with the video in lower left. I asked at the local Apple store but we were not able to find any information about this. Do I have faulty memory? Is this really a feature and if so how do I toggle the two views?
    Thanks.

Depending on the Specs of your Mac is the key to how iChat displays iChat Theatre.
I can find no setting for it.
Strangely when I tested my G4 split the view as did my MacBook Pro on receiving but when I tried to go from MacBook Pro to G4 I did not get split view

    Hi,
IChat uses better Video Compression than Skype does.
On a top flight Mac you can send a 640 X 480 pixel frame up to 30 frames a sec.
    Skype can't match this.
iChat in Video is Peer to Peer. (you can actually Log out of the Buddy list)
Skype seems to borrow something from everyone's bandwidth to make connections.
What do you mean by Business account Tracking ?
iChat Adds (or can add) the First Name, Last Name of your Buddies and create an Address Book Entry
Whether you mark those cards connected with a  company is up to you.
(I have heard of issues with earlier version of iChat and the Address Book that "saw" the Company Name as the part of the Name and linking several Screen Names to the one name
Audio on a Mac using Skype tend to be the same as the streaming needs are less.
However you have to rely on any PCs audio abilities from PCs which may not be to the same standard.
Mac to PCs in iChat and AIM can be difficult though.  (It should work but it rarely as simple as Plug and go)
Skype may suit your needs better on ocassions.

  • IChat Theater - Audio not working - (Final Cut Pro 7)

    Hello Forum
I just installed FCP 7 and am trying to get IChat Theater to work. The video comes through fine, but I don't hear the audio of FCP. Any ideas why? The audio of the mic comes through, we can have a normal chat conversation but the audio of the playback is just dead.
My setup (I am the editor):
    FCP 7
    OSX 10.5.6
Mac Pro (early 2009) without Video Camera, only mic
    My client's setup:
    OSX 10.5.6
Macbook Pro with camera and mic
Do I need to have a camera installed on my mac pro?
    Any insight appreciated.
    Thank you
    sk

    Hi Meatpuppet,
I'm having the same issue with not getting my audio through to the client on Ichat theater preveiew. I'm on a mac pro with a small DV camera attached via firewire. when I start the chat, the person on the other side sees and hears me fine, but then when I start sharing in FCP, the video switches so that the remote person sees the time line, but loses the audio from me and doesn't hear the audio from the time line...
The manual recommends "disconnecting and external video device" ( then what do us mac pro folks do?)
So my question for you, and I know that you're on and Apogee Duet, is: Was your tinkering in FCP, your system sound settings, or iChat? in other words, where was the disconnect?
    thanks.

  • Ichat 4.05: Why can't I share an m4v file in ichat Theater?

I was trying to share a video that I purchased off of iTunes via iChat Theater, but all that appears is a gray screen. The file is an MPEG-layer 4 video file labeled .m4v. I checked to make sure that it was compatible with QuickTime (as that is the only outline set forth for video files in iChat help). Does any one have ANY advice on this issue?! It is frustrating, because the reason I bought the video on iTunes was to share it, and now it doesn't work! I tried converting the file using iSquint (a third party program) to no avail! It confuses me because the 'logo' of the file, unlike other mp4s, looks like an audio file (uses the itunes logo), instead of a video, but as I said it plays fine on iTunes, QuickTime, and my ipod. What is going on here?
    Thanks!

This turned out to be a case of asking the wrong question.  Our file server was changed from an AFP to SMB but the problem I was having was due to the fact that folder names had also been changed (dog knows why). Makes me wish there was a way to delete the whole question.

  • IChat Theater only displays a still image

    Hi there,
I have a feeling this must be the simplest question in the world, but I can't figure it out.
While in an iChat session, I want to share an image via iChat Theater, so I drag a .jpg into the video window. When I do that, I have a choice on top to Send to my brother or to "Share With iChat Theater." I choose "Share With iChat Theater" but then instead of the interactive window that keeps my video feed, the .jpg takes over the whole iChat window on my end and there is no video feed. I can't find a setting to bring back the interactivity of iChat Theater. Can anybody help?
    Thanks,
    Greg

With faster Macs the screen does divide somewhat like a video chat with three people involved so that you see the person the Pic and yourself (or himself in this case)
On slower Macs your Video Feed is suspended in favour of the iChat Theatre Share and he will only see your Share and his preview.
The Side by Side view is supposed to be supported (top option) according to Apple's Specs http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2020?viewlocale=en_US See last paragraph.
Of course this also depends on the Internet Connection Speed and making sure it is not capped by System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming (Needs to be at 1.5Mbps) or iChat > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit which should not really be less then 500kbps or by other macs and applications doing downloads.

  • Another resolution question.....sorry

Thanks to Zac and Bogie for helping me out with the whole resolution questions but I do have one more....sorry. Do I need to log and capture in FCP in order to import the file into compressor to change the codec or is there another way? Maybe direct from the camera so it doesn;t get any more compressed than it is?
Thanks again for putting up with me
    Rick

If you shot on DV, for example, capturing it isn't compressing more. It is what it is. You shot it DV, it is DV. What's on the tape isn't "better" than what gets captured to your hard drive.
Anyway, yes, you have to capture or ingest the footage or have some sort of existing movie file to put it into Compressor. You can't take it from the camera directly.

  • How to resize and change the resolution of a batch of photos using Automator

I searched for a long time tonight looking for the answer to this (seemingly) simple question:
How do I use Automator to scale and change the resolution of a batch of images?
    It was not so simple.
    Links to this question:

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/3207516#3207516
These are just the links on this site - I found them all over the place at MacRumors, Apple Tips, Mac Help, etc.
You can actually manage this in Automator.
Here are the steps that worked for me:
Create an Automator APPLICATION - not a workflow (this is due to the way that I'm batch converting images - workflows might be ok for some cases)
Step 1 is Copy Finder Items
My flow inserts an SD card, opens the DCIM folder that my Nikon creates, selecting the images that I click (command + click to multi-select) and once I have the photos highlighted, I drag them onto this Automator App we're creating.
<==  You'll have this guy soon!
As a result - I want to copy the originals to my computer as step 1.  I don't touch the originals on the SD card (and cards are cheap so I tend to leave them on the cards as well)
Step 2 is the Scale Images action - you can search the library for this and find it quickly.  For my part, I found that scaling images to about 38.8 percent of their size on the SD card is good for uploading to a blog.  Change this value to whatever you wish.
Step 3 is Run Shell Script - and here is where we marry the brilliance found at this link with our script. If you have a hard time reading the text in the image, it is as follows:
    #bin/bash
    for f in "$@"
    do
         /usr/bin/sips -s dpiHeight 72.0 -s dpiWidth 72.0 $f
    done
Save this application (I named mine "Format Photos")
Place the application inside the target folder where you want the images to end up.  I do this because when I have the SD card window open, I can also open my "Photos" window and see my App sitting there.  I select my images as I mentioned and drag them on top of this app.  The app copies the originals and the conversions into the folder.
NOTES: When you open a converted pic in Preview, you will see Resolution = 300 dpi if you go to Tools --> Adjust Size...  This reading is explained by another brilliant discussion as sips only touches the JFIF properties inside the file's MetaData.  However, if you look at the bottom of the Adjust Size... window, you'll see the image size is probably around 500 kb (give or take depending on the original).  My goal was to get the images down from the 3.0 MB I shoot at to around 500 kb.  Therefore even though the MetaData still thinks that it is 300 DPI according to Preview, it has been changed to 72 (open it in some other applications mentioned at the links and you'll find different readings - it all depends on what the application reads from the Meta).
This does not rename the files, so you'll get DSC_1000.jpg and DSC_1000 copy.jpg in all likelihood.  If that annoys you, add a step into the Automator Application that renames the file after the "Run Shell Script" action has run, and you can have each file renamed according to some convention that you like.
This took a heck of a lot longer than I expected - so I decided to put in the effort to share this with the community and save others the hassle.

PPI is pixels per inch of the image.  It is difficult to increase resolution as you are trying to add data that is not there.
But for printing purposes what you want is dpi or dots per inch.
The image processor either accessed from Bridge (tools/photoshp) or PS is a good way to change a batch of images.

  • Mail, iCal Server and iChat server will not work over VPN

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station at the office running the network. Behind it sits a Mac Mini Snow Leopard server running 10.6.3. The ports necessary for Mail, iCal Server and iChat work fine through that external connection. I can also connect with VPN from my 10.6.3 clients.
HOWEVER, when I connect with the VPN clients, I am suddenly unable to access the Mail, iCal Server, Wiki server and iChat server. All connections time out. I can ping the server and I can do other things that do NOT work on the public Airport like ssh or VNC. ssh and VNC are closed at the airport extreme.
So it's pretty odd. When I'm connected via the VPN, all ports that are forwarded to the Snow Leopard server time out over the VPN.
I've tried various and sundry configurations with the VPN client. This includes trying to send all traffic over the VPN, moving it up in the service order, etc. etc. Nothing fixes it. DNS resolution is working fine, however when I do a wireshark capture of ppp0 traffic, I notice that SSL and TLSv1 handshakes appear to occur on the public IP address instead of the private network IP address... and they're all resets.
Has anyone gotten this to work successfully? Like I said, all ports that are NOT forwarded through the Airport work fine over the VPN, but will not work when connected to the VPN. It's really bizarre.

New data: any ports that are normally forwarded on the Airport Extreme to the Mac Mini server will not work when connected to the VPN.
For instance, if I have imaps/993 forwarded from the Airport Extreme to the Mac Mini, it works fine over the Internet. If I connect to the VPN, I can connect to all OTHER services on the Mac Mini, but Mail, for instance, will not work.

  • IChat Theater doesn't display properly

Everytime I try to play a quicktime movie on iChat Theater the display screen of the movie is cut. Sometime's the screen will be only showing half of the movie and other times it shows 3/4 of it. Any suggestions?? It just recently started doing this.

    Hi,
Some Movies you may have will be in "WideScreen" 16:9 ratio.
Others will be in the older 4:3 ratio
iChat's View is 4:3 in ratio
This causes issues with some Movies and Pages or Powerpoint presentations that are based on the Default Slide size. which also tends to be close to 16:9 in ratio.
Whether you get this Side by Side view depends on the Process and to a lesser extent the Internet speed you have.
Have you recently changed the format you make Movies in ?
If not check the Activity Monitor and see what Processor (CPU) cycles (in percentage terms) iChat, iChatAgent and vcencoder are using during iChat Theatre.

  • IChat video conference question?

I have a couple of and maybe some dumb questions.
I manage a small office with 3 Dell desktop windows XP Pro computers and 2 Macs (1-iMac 1000GHz & 1-Powerbook G4 1000GHz, both 10.4.8) and one Savin Office scanner/copy machine. The one Windows XP computer works as the server for the Savin copier. All are assigned static IP addresses. I'm presently running a Linksys wireless router WRT54G. We have several other seperate locations associated with the business where we would like to be able to video conference with iChat.
I use to be able to iChat (video & audio) with the office computers for about a year and a half from my office but after changing the Linksys router from an older non-wireless version to the newer wireless version WRT-54G vers. 5, I can no longer Video or Audio iChat with the office on either of the 2 Macs listed above (text chating is no problem). The 2 office computers can no longer Video or Audio iChat with any other locations any where (but they can within the office, machine to machine). After exhaustive research, I'm convinced it is the Router.
I was thinking of getting the new Airport Extreme base station with N, that Apple is now advertising, to see if this works. My first question is, will it work with the Savin Office copier/scanner like the Linksys does? Is it any different in setting up than say the Linksys?
Is this more of a HOME piece of equipment or can I really use it in an office setting that is truely cross platform. (all computers file share with each other, particularly with the one XP machine that is the server for the Savin scanner.)
Will I have any problems at all with iChat.
I know there are a lot of questions but I really don't want to spend the money and disrupt the office if there is any anticipation of problems.
The business is a Day Care Center with 9 locations so the Video & Audio chat is important to the kids and the office personnel.
If this will work flawlessly, I would go ahead and replace the 10 routers for the 10 different centers we have, so everyone can Video & Audio iChat.
    Thanks for your help.
    Jim

Might it be that you just don't have the proper ports opened on the Linksys router to allow for both the audio & video portions of iChat? The following site is a great tool in setting up ports for specific routers, including your Linksys: http://portforward.com/default.htm
I was thinking of getting the new Airport Extreme base station with N, that Apple is now advertising, to see if this works. My first question is, will it work with the Savin Office copier/scanner like the Linksys does? Is it any different in setting up than say the Linksys?
I am assuming that your Savin copier is Ethernet-enabled. Since the new AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) provides three Ethernet LAN ports, it should function similiarly to the Linksys to provide network access to the Savin. Since it a different device, there will be differences on setup. For example, the previous AirPort base station relied on the AirPort utilities for setup...and not a web-based one like the Linksys do. This is expected to be the same for the new model.
Is this more of a HOME piece of equipment or can I really use it in an office setting that is truely cross platform. (all computers file share with each other, particularly with the one XP machine that is the server for the Savin scanner.)
I would treat the AEBS no different than your current Linksys. Would you consider the Linksys a "HOME" piece of equipment? The AEBS should fit in quite well in a business environment as it does in a home one.
Will I have any problems at all with iChat.
As long as you have the proper ports opened on BOTH your hardware AND software firewalls, should shoudn't have any problems with iChat.
