FCP 7 crashes on XDCAM full HD edit

Final Cut Pro 7 crashes unexpectedly while editing on Full HD (1080i50). I copied the data directly from and SXS card of AN EX3 XDCAM. I was using n AZA KONA 3 with the following system configuration-
12GB DDR2 RAM
2 X Intel Xeon Quad Core 2.6 ghz
3 x Internal Seagate Barracuda XT on Striped RAID (6tb)
1 x standard mac drive (640gb)
NVIDIA GT 120 (512 MB)
i moved in from 6GB RAM and had to buy 3 additional drives just to sort out the problem but stil i am not able to edit HD with ease so i had to go about changing my card.
now i upgraded to a BLACKMAGIC DECKLINK EXTREME HD.
But instead of solving the problem, now my FCP is crashing even more.
Please Help.

Hi there and welcome to the forums,
sorry for your woes, couple of things to check first
1. whats your clip and sequence settings, do they match? you did use l&t to get your material in yes?
2. tried trashing prefs etc?
3. re XDCAM, there are several incidents of this nature about - do a search on this forum and here
http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1108980
IMO mixing XDCAM and any other format in the project/timeline is a recipe for disaster so if you have mixed formats either transcode all to pro res or if thats not practical, transcode non xdcam cam to xdcam.
Also try turning off thumbnails and only having 1 sequence open at a time. and try taking your I/O box out of the equation to see if that helps.
Good luck
Andy

  • My FCP pro crashes frequently during edit to tape.  It's frustrating.

MY FCP pro crashes frequently in the middle of edit to tape.  I have 8 gigs of ram and the quad core processor.  Do I need to add more ram or what?  I get the "disc is too slow" message or whatever.  Any suggestions?

Sorry about that.  Forgot there was an X.  Will move to other forum.  Also, that's means I can't upgrade to X if there isn't an edit to tape!

  • FCP keeps crashing when loading thumbnails from bin

    Hey folks,
I am having constant issues where FCP keeps crashing when I load a bin with thumbnails. This doesn't happen every time I open a bin, but after I open say 6 or 7 bins. After the research I have done I have come to a couple of possible solutions 1= this previous post
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9545404#9545404
The only thing that is stopping me from trying this procedure is I don't have another Mac with the VADriver, so I have to extract it from the OS DVD, which is fine thanks to the Pacifist program which makes it easier, but I don't know how to get the specific file extracted.
I also noticed that the guy who solved the same issue with this procedure has an older OS to mine, so surely with the new OS the problem would have been resolved??
2= the other solution seems to be to put the footage onto a hard drive with a faster connection other than firewire 800. But this doesn't seem right to me because the project worked perfectly fine on the old PowerPC Mac using the same external FW800 drives I am using on this computer.
I would appreciate any advice. at this point I am probably wasting around 1-2 hours a day with FCP crashing and having to reopen the project to work on it again.
    Anyone having similar issues?

Here's what the fabulous Crash Analyzer says about it:
    *MPEG Media*
This crash appears to have been caused by MPEG media (or MPEG-derived media such as XDCAM, HDV or H.264) in the timeline. MPEG-based media is not recommended for editing in Final Cut Pro.
    *Suggested Actions*
Set the codec of your sequence to ProRes in Sequence Settings.
Alternatively, and for best results, transcode any HDV, MPEG-2, XDCAM, AVCHD, H.264 or other long-GOP media into an editing-friendly format such as ProRes or Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC).

  • FCP keeps crashing EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)

    Good morning all,
Our FCP keeps crashing. Usually during scrubbing or trimming. But sometimes also out of the blue. First the image kinda jitters and then FCP crashes.
We reinstalled FCP, reinstalled MacOSX, updated all drivers and whatnot.
Still keeps crashing, could it be the new RAM we put in?
We have our footage on a striped RAID. In this case it's XDCam footage, but we had the same with Prores files.
Any help or suggestions would be great.
Here's the crash report, if anyone can make sense out of that:

Oooo! I can! Because I have CRASH ANALYZER from www.digitalrebellion.com.
    "QuickTime"
This crash was caused by QuickTime.
Possible causes include corrupt media, corrupt render files, an unsupported or unstable codec, an image resolution that is too large (this is particularly a problem with Motion as image sizes are limited by the maximum texture size of your graphics card), or a version of QuickTime that is incompatible with your version of Final Cut Studio.
If the crash is happening at startup and you have not set any projects to launch when the application starts, it is likely that you have a mismatched version of QuickTime.
    Suggested Actions
Use the Render Manager in Final Cut Pro to trash your render files.
Use the Corrupt Clip Finder to locate the problematic clip and then recapture or attempt to repair it.
If the issue is related to a codec, upgrade the codec if an upgrade is available or consider transcoding your footage to an editing-friendly codec such as ProRes.
If you are using CMYK images, convert them to RGB.
Upgrade Final Cut Pro to bring it in line with your version of QuickTime.

Since loading Lion, I've experienced much more instability than Snow Leopard. In particular, Mail crashes with regularity, full-screen apps seem to run slower and show the beach ball more often for longer, etc. I love the features, but I'm disappointed with the performance. Any help coming from Apple?  I've been sending them so many reports after crashes, that their file must be full!

Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?

Random unresponsive mouse, keyboard, and software when working in FCP.   The system would freeze and my only remedy was to shut down.   This would only happen when editing video.   I assumed my ATI Radeon 1900xt grapics card was the culrprit.
Ordered and installed the ATI Radeon HD 5770 upgrade from apple.  Trying to open FCP after the install, but FCP was blocked from opening for 3 reasons  1.  “Final Cut Pro requires that your system have 128 MB of VRAM; this system has only 0”   2.  Quartz Extream compatiblity and the minimim pixel height on my display was under under 800 (768)
I restarted the computer and reset PRAM (hold option, command, P & R keys down all together when you restart). Wait until you hear the second chime before releasing the keys.   This didn’t work.
So, I trashed preferences.  That didn’t work.
I opened up Applications, control click on FCP, “Show Package Contents”  Contents/Resources and opened "minsys.plist"  and set the minimum VRAM, Quartz Extream Capable, & Screen resolution all to “warn” instead of “block”.  This allowed FCP to begin it’s launch, BUT FCP  would then hang on the Looksuite Plugin and not open.
So, I then uninstalled LookBuilder & removed the plug in.  FCP would then open. BUT immediately after setting my timeline preferences to Apple ProRes 442 LT  FCP crashed with in seconds.
As a work around I tired creating a new user with admin privileges but to no avail.  FCP still crashes.   with this error “ Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000000”
Any direction would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Justin

    > I purchased my rig with FCP and other programs already installed.  I don't have install disk's for FCP.  When I upgrade to SL, will I need to re-install FCP as well, or (assuming I have no other problems) can I upgrade the OS with out installing FCP again?<
The previous owner is going to be in trouble in the afterlife but you're going to be in big trouble when you attempt to upgrade FCP. You will be able to purchase FCPX, from what we can tell, without your serial numbers.
The general advice around here is to do a scroched earth total erase and install of everything when changing operating systems. In all my years of runing FCP on my Macs, I've never done that. I've alwyas just run the OS Update script and I have never had a problem with this method. I do, of course, make a clone of my system drive before attempting major changes.
If you do an intialization install when you get Snow Leopard, you will need FCP disks. Whoever you bought the rig from stole them from you.

  • FCP 7.0.3 XDCAM media in Pro Res sequence-implications?

We have 1.5TB of XDCAM [email protected] Post facility suggested offlining at DV NTSC but it was decided to cut native (before my time). I've inherited XDCAM 422 sequences. Using a 4 TB G Raid enclosure with both FW800 & eSATA/HD Link card & 12 core 2.66 Ghz MacPro w/6GB RAM. Intermittent crashes, 9 today, but then it will play back fine for a few hours before resuming the crashes. It will crash both on sections with FX or more than 1 stream as well as single stream sections. I thought it was the FW800 choking but the eSATA is worse. Digital Rebellion Crash Analyser attributes crashes to Mpeg media, which apparently I'm stuck with as the transcode time implication is 'too high'
What if I switch the sequence codec to Pro Res HQ & re render, will this be helpful in any way? It seems to playback ok with very little rendering on Safe RT.
BTW have installed Pro Applications Update 2010-02.

thank you for your responses-I tried transcoding everything to xdcam in a fresh project-no difference, crashing at the same rate, despite changing storage to fibre channel raid. so MM'd to Prores LT (no obvious difference to prores HQ on the cinema display) and all good.
David, the project was inherited with a whole load of identically named clips in different subfolders (!!!) although I doubt this caused the crashes. AFAIK they were editing w/o cards in the field.

  • FCP 7 crashes when choosing "yes" to changing of sequence settings for Flip

I've been doing quite a bit of work with the Flip HD video camera recently. I grew tired of rendering everything, so decided it was time to finally upgrade from FCP 5 to FCP 7.
However, FCP 7 crashes every time I try to lay down video files from the Flip camera onto a timeline.
Upon laying the files down onto the timeline, I am prompted with the message asking if I want to change the sequence settings to match the video. I click yes and immediately get "General Error" and FCP crashes.
I tried trashing the preferences. same result.
I tried updating FCP 7 to FCP 7.0.1. same result.
I even tried updating fixes for iMovie as if that would have anything to do with it. same result.
I'm currently rendering it out the same way I had been in FCP 5.
    Any advice or ideas?

AVC is h.264, which is not a work-able editing format, it's a delivery format (and a consumer video camera acquisition format suitable for holiday videos going straight to YouTube), that's why you've been having to render all the time in FCP 5.
Now you're in FCP 7 and it's asking if you want to change the sequence settings to match the video, but there is no sequence setting to match AVC/h.264 so it's freaking your computer out. Still, it shouldn't crash, but that's the problem i believe.
You need to correct your work-flow by transcoding your media into something usable like ProRes, or you can choose not to change your sequence settings, and render the timeline as you have been doing in the past.

  • How do I export when FCP keeps crashing for large QuickTime exports?

    Forum,
I have a 108-minute finished Final Cut Pro project. Ultimately, I'd like to burn it on a DVD so that it can be watched by any Joe-Schmoe using an ordinary DVD player. I'll be using DVD Studio Pro to do the burning. And before this, I plan to compress using Apple Compressor.
    But...
I can't export this file to QuickTime! FCP keeps CRASHING about halfway through the process. I'm preserving the Current Settings, which, by the way, are XDCAM EX 1080p24 VBR.
I have four internal hard drives used as follows:
    D1 OSX and FCP
    D2 audio media
    D3 visual media
D4 location of FCP files and scratch disk
I also have a MyBook USB2.0 external drive available should this be of use.
Any suggestions for a viable workflow here? Should I be exporting to QuickTime first? Is my configuration doomed? Should I export straight to Compressor?
    thanks,
    Shanked

Is there a way to do this WITHOUT your suggested software?
Sure, but its very manual and the Corrupt Clip Finder really just automates that for you ... but I get your point about keeping things clean and can't fault that philosophy.
First, you can use the Tools > Render Manager to delete all the sequence's render files and references. Then just play through the entire sequence (in the sequence RT menu you can enable the option to Play Base Layer Only). If the corruption was in one of the render files then you should now be able to play through without issue. If the corruption is in one of the clips then you should discover that FCP will crash or throw up an error when it tries to play though that clip ... keep a note of where this error occurs as thats your corrupt clip. Similarly, after trashing renders you can re-render, keep an eye on the render progress ... the error will be thrown proportionate to the area of the timeline where the corrupt source clip is contained. Additionally, yes, you can use the Reconnect Media function to selectively reconnect your source media to your masterclips, clip by clip ... the one that won't reconnect is going to be the problem child. That's the one you need to recapture/reimport from source.
    Hope it helps

  • Full ABAP Edition-Trial  instalation problems

    Hi,
I tried to install the Fulle ABAP edition Tiral but I had some problems I can't solve on my own.
The first steps was alright and real installation began until Step 4.
At this point there was 24 actiosn to cmplete. The 16th first was alright but during the 17th ( Import ABAP) the system freeze. I try to stop install, reboot my computer and try again, it didn't freeze but the 18 jobs in ABAP import failed.
I tried to uninstall all I began  to install and try to restart from the begining but the unistall process failed.
Each time I try to restart a new install or to continue the existing one, a message is displayed saying that I can try again, stop, or reset the data for the current task in order to restart the task without crash... but how to do so?
please help cause I don't understand at all... unable to install , unable to reinstall unable to uninstall.
    Regards,
    Morgan

    Hi Subhash
Do U rally think that formating Hard Disk is the only way to continu install? Cause doing so will take a long time and I will have a lot of thing to install so, I would like to found a way to continue install from this point not to restart all and format my harddisk.
    regards,

  • Premiere Elements 7 crashes when I start to edit clips

I have downloaded Premium Elements 7 and installed same. I have taken a small series of 12 clips to try the software, into "new project (all 12 clips).
I then took the clips into the editing mode, but after dragging the 3 clips the programme crashed.
This has happened several times. Each time a menu pops up and says "Adobe has stopped working. A problem has caused the programme to stop working correctly. Windows will close the programme and notify you if a solution is available. CLOSE."
I have Vista Home Premium, using a 2GB dual core intel with 160 GB harddrive. Can some one tell me what is wrong please

    Dear Steve,
Thanks for the prompt response. I am having major problems. As you suggested I activated quicktime and then updated this. Then my problems got worse as I was unable to find the clips which were originally stored in Adobe photoshop so could not obtain them. I decided to uninstall PREMIUM ELEMENTS and re-download after restarting my PC. Unfortunately it will not install. it aborts part way throughthe installation
Install shows,  C:\Program files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0\   then Next, then Install, which I click on.
Part way through this install procedure a menu appears
Menu Error 1311. Source file not found and C:\User\Admin\App Data\Local\Temp\wzde 24\data1.cab. Verify that file exists and that you can access it.  Retry and cancel
Checking through the files the last one is wzde 24 but no data1.cab file.
So what else am I not doing or doing wrong.
    Thanks for your assistance
    Barry

Subject: Premiere Elements 7 crashes when I start to edit clips
    1) What are you using for source files? Photo? Video? If video, what type of camcorder did the video come from and how did you get it into your computer?
    2) How much free, defragmented space is on your hard drive?
    3) Is your operating system up to date? (Manually going to Windows Update and adding the hidden or custom updates) Do you have the latest version of Quicktime -- which is critical for running this program with any stability (per the FAQs to the right of this forum)? This is particularly important when running Vista.

  • FCP 7 crashes only when switching to other applications/finder

    Hi everyone,
I've been working on a feature film for about 9 months in FCP 7.  All went fine.  I regularly backed up, copied to new projects (have had a few bad experiences with corrupted projects) and have otherwise had no problems.
Last night, all of a sudden, I got the spinning wheel of death while tidying something up.  FCP crashed.  No problem, I restarted it but the same thing happened again.  I trashed my prefs, figure that would fix it but it didn't.  Very strange because I didn't change anything with the project and the file itself is not that big, maybe 35 mb.
After about 20 crahses I figured out that it only crashes when I switch between FCP and another application, say Safari.  I can work away on the project, but as soon as I cmd+tab to any other app (including finder) when I go back to FCP I get the spinning wheel and it eventually shows up as not responding.
I have re-installed FCP 3 times since yesterday, re-installed the OS, repaired the disk permissions, trashed the pref's A LOT, and have now even upgraded the OS to Lion - none of this has had any effect.
If someone sees something obvious that I'm missing please let me know.  I'm tearing my hair out here.  Searching extensively only doesn't seem to yield much.
    I'm using a MacPro 1.1, OSX 10.7.4, 2x 3 ghz quad core processors and 14 gb ram.
    Thank you for your time
    Rick

I've had this problem too and figured out a solution to try before evicerating your system and trial and erroring RAM back into socket.
If you edit anything like I do you like to always be able to go back after making changes so you save all of your old sequences just in case you need to reference them later.  While working on a televison show my FCP projects for each episode consisted of a sequence for each show act and a master sequence of the entire show run, all of which I copied and saved at the end of each day so I could backtrack changes if I needed to.  Multiply this process by two weeks or so and pretty soon my episode projects consisted of at least 28-32 separate sequences in addition to all my media links, music, SFX, etc.
The solution that worked for me was to copy my current project and delete all the old sequences saving only the most recent two copies of my work;keeping a backup copy of my old work but removing them from my active project.
I had to do this folder by folder, about 4 sequences at a time) to prevent FCP from crashing in the middle of the delete but once it was done the problem was solved.  I can switch back and forth between applications without any consequence and I'm back on track and able to work again.  I've since adjusted my workflow so that when I hit four days worth of sequences I duplicate the project and (in the copy) I delete all the past sequences and start from my current cut.  e.g. If I worked for one week and have five folders of past sequences then at the beginning of the next week I copy the whole project, delete the old material and start from my current cut.  If I need to reference old changes I just open up the old project and it's all available without crippling my system.
As best as I can determine the crashes are a result of Final Cut trying to refresh media links to too many things when you toggle back to it from another progam and locking up.  This seemed to solve the problem.
    Hope it helps.

  • My iphoto 9.1 keeps crashing when I try to edit/rotate photos, any ideas?

my iphoto 9.1 keeps crashing when I try to edit/rotate photos, any ideas?
It will let me do 1 or 2 and then will show 2 photos at once overlayed and then crash...I look for updates and it says I have the most current version...
    any help will be appreciated!
    thank you, angela

First make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

Thanks for your reply. This video was recorded by my own professional camera, Sony PMW EX 3, two years back. But I am neither a professional cameraman nor an editor. I am just like a beginner in both.  I didnt have space in my storage device, so I just copied all my clips, thinking I can edit it latter, without recompressing or editing or whatever I should have done it at that point of time.  Now I need to edit it and use it in my profession. I am very upset.  Please help me in going step by step to get it in FCP X for editing.  Also I would like to know, do I need to buy the Compressor 4 for any reason. I dont mind in buying, if you think it is going to be useful for some reason.  Thank you very much in anticipation for any kind of proper guidance.
