FCP 7 making it's own clips

When I try capturing a long clip (45 minutes, from a JVC GY-HD200 mini-DV), the clip gets randomly split into two, with around seven seconds missing.
This has happened when I capture with Intermediate Codec as well as setting in/out points with a 720p Sequence preset and Batch Capturing.
How can I fix this? This is for a client. Help!

This is a problem inherent in JVC's compression scheme. As far as I know there's no fix for it yet.
Capturing to Apple Intermediate Codec is the actually the only way I know to get over the seven second gaps.
I normally Capture Now an entire tape to HDV 720p 30. Then I go back and capture the gaps with Apple Intermediate Codec.
Then sync those into the timeline. It's a godawful workflow, and I hope someday I never have to look at JVC HDV again.
Are you positive that AIC is missing material you see on the tape? Yes it will split clips when it detects start/stop, but it always gets the seconds that HDV 720p misses, at least on our system. We use a JVC deck for capturing.

here is one that is imported and stays .mp4. the specs are same as original file before import.
here is one that has changed somehow during import. specs on original file are same as above, but once it is imported it changes to this in event folder, and others randomly keep the above specs.

FCP crashes when i take clips offline

Using FCP 5.1.2 and AfterEffects 6
At first it would happen when i was trying to replace a clip created in AfterEffects. i'd need to make an adjustment or whatever and rather than making a new clip, i named it the same as the clip already online in FCP and told AfterEffects to replace it. When i tab back to FCP, i'd get the spinning beachball of death and FCP would stop responding.
Deciding to change my tactics, i decided i would take the clip offline in FCP FIRST and avoid the whole missing media thing. Well, when i asked FCP to take the clip offline (deleting of the disk), it got stuck in the making a video preview loop, with the bar at 100%, but never stopping. Can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong here (or at least the main thing i'm doing wrong)?

I was just walked through a repair procedure by an Apple Care person, and it fixed my camera recognition problems (I have a Canon XL1 and sometime after installing Tiger, then 10.4.1, various patches (including Quicktime 7.1) and the latest Desktop Video patch, I've been unable to use the camera with Final Cut Express, and attempts to capture would result in a FCE crash).
The workaround is to download Quicktime manually, after removing the "receipts" which indicate that it is loaded. Specifically, I was told to do the following:
1. Navigate to Library -> Receipts on your main drive (not from your personal folder).
2. Remove all files of the form QuickTime*.pkg, where "*" is a version number. E.g. QuickTime600.pkg, QuickTime650.pkg, Quicktime700.pkg and QuickTime701.pkg. This simply tells your system that those packages are not installed.
3. Go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/downloads and click on the "download Quicktime" link. DO NOT USE THE AUTOMATIC UPDATE UTILITY. Download QuickTimeInstallerX.dmg. Double click this file (probably on your desktop) and then invoke the installer by double clicking QuickTime701.pkg.
4. After your computer reboots, you should be able to restart FCP and see your camera.

FCP X crashes when importing clips

Hello all,
I'm not very computer savvy, so I wouldn't be surprised if there is an easy fix to this that I haven't found yet, but here it goes.
I recently upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 and FCP X 10.1.3, and since then I have been having trouble importing video clips. Every time I've tried, FCP crashes and I get a FCP quite unexpectedly message. So here's what I've tried. I trashed preferences, repaired disk permissions, and uninstalled FCP and reinstalled. Still have the problem.
The only thing I can tell you is that everything was fine before the upgrade and if I do not optimize media during import, things seem to import ok, although I prefer to optimize.
Let me know what you all think, and if there is anymore info you could use.

Unfortunately I can't get that far in the process to be able to answer your question.
The crash doesn't occur when I try to add a transition to a file or storyboard - it happens when I try to drag the transition outside of it's own panel.
As you can see in the screenshot, when the file being dragged touches the red line, FCP shuts down without warning.
Very confusing and annoying!

FCP freezes - won't play clips or timeline

I tried importing files to a new event and setting up a new project. FCPX simply freezes. I cannot play a clip (audio or video). The computer is an iMac (IMAC 11,1 27" 2.8GHz Core i7,ATI Radeon 4850 512MB, 8GB Ram) The problem shows up with ALL projects/ALL events. All of which worked earlier.   The latest files work fine on my MBP (also FCPX10.0.5/OSX 10.8.2). When I press play FCP CPU usage goes to 1-00% (out of 800% at full utilization) returns to zero when I stop playback.
One quirk is that I see a little bit of motion when I stop playback (press the = )
I tried wiping preferences, removing/reinstalling FCP, and am now at wits end.   I erased ALL FCP data files before the reinstall and eliminated application data files etc. What am I missing that might have been corrupted? What else can I do to try to fix this situation?

Tom, thanks for getting back to me so quickly. The video clips are standard movie files made using a Canon SX260HS (1080p resolution) the audio files are .aif output from Garage band. I have used similar files before successfully and files (both events and projects) that used to work fine will not play either. When editing I create a myulticam clip with A and B roll video plus an audio track (exported from garage Band).
I suspect that the files are not the cause since I can use the most recent set on my MBP and everything works fine. But I, of course, have no proof.

FCP does not save captured clips

During Log and Capture, everything works fine. I can control the camera and the preview shows as it captures. However once I press esc to stop the "capture now" nothing happens. Normally the clip should appear in the browser window in my bin, but nothing happens. The clip is not even on my computer because I checked my capture scratch folder as well. After pressing esc i also get an error message "General Error: An unknown capture error occurred."

tried that and still doesn't work. im using HDV 1080i the sony preset. The preview shows during Capture Now but when i press esc, nothing happens and the clip is not saved.

Log and transfer causes FCP to crash with long clips

Hi. I am trying to import a few 2 hour+ clips using Log and Transfer from my Sony NX5. Once the destination clip has reached approx 60GB, FCP crashes every time. There is plenty of disk space left.
I have tried trashing preferences and also changing scratch disks. I am turned off time machine. I am really worried that I wont be able to get this footage onto my machine.

In the end Clipwrap saved the day on this project.
This did happen to me again though on yet another project, where the files were around an hour long this time. In the end I got it to work, not sure the solution but tried the following:
- Selected a different easy setup (choose PAL) - this fixed the problem for a colleague of mine, even though it doesn't seem logical
- Used my internal drive as a scratch disk instead of my firewire drive (normally this is not a problem)
I haven't tried this with the really long clips, as Clipwrap saved me.

Is there a tutorial on making a Mask,Or Clipping Mask for CS4?

I have imported a file of a sheet of music,and all I want is the sheet, not the background. Easy to do so in PS. I didn't know I could "print screen" directly into .AI and I've tried making a clipping mask so I could use the sheet as a background to no avail. Really appreciate the help.....thanks...mm

Let's see you can lock the art or image of the sheet music in the layers panel and the freely use the pen tool on top of it.
You can group if you wish the art for sheet music and then center that within the artboard then lock the grup in the layers panel and freely work ove the locked group.
you select that group and drag it into the symbols panel and make it a symbol and that would protect it even further and you also lock that symbol.
You can edit the art of the symbol without undoing the clipping path by editing the symbol.
Might be a good option.
The shape you make for the clipping mask ca be selected along with the and the option to aline to artboard chosen then center the two horizontally and vertical or just one direction.

Oh, yes once you have the masked art you can turn that art into a symbol s well place and position it anyway you want then if it has to be different fro the other sheets break the link to the parent symbol and make that a symbol as well.

Reconnect issues w/FCP 6 with "phantom missing clips"

Ok folks it's kinda hard to describe in a concise way what's going on so please bear with me.
We are working with FCP6 on multiple machines.
We have one master project file that Edit 1 houses.
We work on the other machines on a copy of that master project file and bring in the work sequences into the Edit 1 master project as they are completed.
We do this a lot and move sequences around.
Ever now and then we have serious reconnection to media issues on the main machine where when I go to reconnect a sequence to the media files it will bring up a ton of "blank" or "phantom" clips in the missing files box in the reconnect window. Basically instead of a list of clip names that FCP wants me to reconnect it will list a batch of clips that are blank with no txt and therefore we have no way of connecting that media.
Has anyone experienced this issue before and how have you worked around this?
any help very much appreciated and if you need more info to understand what the **** I'm talking about then please let me know!

I've never been able to truly get that to happen properly.
Over the break I will give that one more shot.
On the two main systems we work with we do have the same size and config of drives etc so it can be achieved. I'll take a look at that option over the break and see if I make make it happen.
I do take the project home at times and media manage the footage into a much smaller drive to work on sections of the project so in that case there's no way around it. Although I guess if I keep the naming and folder structure the same it's possible. I'll give that a try too.

FCP 4 No audio on clips after trashing prefs

I have no audible audio coming from my FCP clips (Quicktime clips outside fcp are fine, so the computer is not muted. I trashed prefs per instructions for a video problem earlier in the day. When I rebooted fcp, no audio could be heard from any of the clips, even tough it reads on the on-screen audio meter. Would trashing the prefs kill or lock my audio output? Is there some setting that I can check to release audio from the software?---I even reinstalled the software, to no avail. Also: the beachball spins for over five minutes on start up of FCP "loading audio filters". This is new ---the software used to come up immediately. Help!!!

How are you monitoring? Go into your AUDIO/VIDEO settings and make sure that Audio Out is set appropriately.

FCP X can't find clips exported from Davinci Resolve

Doing a roundtrip from FCP X to Davinci Resolve Lite and back. XML imports into Resolve OK, then I render the media and export an XML from Resolve to the same folder.
When I import the XML from Resolve into FCP X, it imports the timeline but just black media -- in Events, there are green rectangles with the names of the "old" clips, meaning what they were called in FCP to begin with. However, Resolve has rendered them with "V1-0001" appended to the name of the clip. I have tried this with several different Resolve settings ("Render clips with unique names" both on and off.)
Any way in FCP X to "reconnect media" as there used to be?

Yes, I imported them. They appear as separate clips (that is, separate from the blank ones that come in with the XML).

Can FCP X auto sync a clip ?

I describe my problem here:
There are 10 singers singing 1 song. The first singer part1, the second singer sing part2 .... until the last singer 10 sing part10.
First I record only the audio of the full song using some audio interface. There is no video for this, with the product I have is the .wav file of the full song. I then import this .wav file into FCP X.
Then for the video, I took 10 video shots separately. I play the .wav file loudly for the video to capture with the singer 1 lip-sync his part1, then I proceed to video the 2nd singer lip-sync his part2 with the .wav file loudly blast ... until video 10.
The question now, is how to place the clip of Video1 to Video10 to sync correctly along the full song of the .wav file ?

I have watch the Ripple Training.
But my problem is different bcos, if you see from the description of my problem, all the 10 parts are different parts from each other (so there is not much mutlicam features).
All the 10 parts added up in sequential will be the one full song.
As far as I understand, the 10 parts are sync with the main song.
But you know, in songs, there are chorus which are the same. If part 2, part 5, part 8 are the section of the videos with the chorus, if you sync it according to the audio, part 2 videos could be sync together with part 5 audio of the the main song (bcos the audio are similar although the picture/video are different).

How do I stop Firefox mobile from making it's own connections to Google, AmazonAWS and netDNA despite choosing every available opt-out?

If I visit a simple web page which doesn't contain any 3rd party content I can still see Firefox Mobile making secure connections to:
108.161.188.224 - Registered to netDNA in the US
74.125.230.* - Various Google servers
23.21.86.68 23.23.293.51 and many more - Amazon AWS servers
These always follow any page load, browsing from a desktop system makes no such connections and are established on a website such as lwn.net which have no 3rd party content on their pages.
I have unticked all options in telemetry and have no sync set up, I even tried disabling things like Safebrowing and add-on update checks in about:config but the very concerning connections remain.
Please help me find the option to make this stop. As the communications are secure I can't look at what they might contain and it baffles me as to what purpose they serve but question one is how on earth do I disable the worrying connections to companies I choose to avoid.

On Firefox for Android there is a new experimental about page that tells you all of the network connections being made in Firefox.
Try it, go to [about:networking]
To disconnect, go to Settings > Privacy > Clear Private Data then restart Firefox on the Android device. This will minimize the active sockets.
However even in private guest session there is safebrowsing.google.com, the default search engine and attached accounts. But you have already found a way to disconnect thest.
Does clearing the Private Data make an improvement?

FCP 6 - How to sort clips (photos) by Date/Time (only)?

Hello All;
I am trying to do something farily simple (I think) but it doesn't seem to be working.
Here's my situation - I am creating a video slide show in FCP consisting probably of about 250 photos from about four different sources but all taken over about 4 days. I imported all of them into a single bin of FCP. I simply want to order each of those photos by the DATE/TIME. If I right-click, I am only able to order by filename or size. However, it I right-click and select "view as list", I am able to reorder by date but it even though it does reorder by date, they are still sorted by filename so this isn't what I want.
Anyone know an easy way (preferably) that i can order a directory exclusively by date/time irrespective of the filename or any other item which I can then move into a FCP timeline ?

Get a copy of [File Sequencer|http://www.johnnarun.com/file_sequencer>.
Place your photos into a folder and set it to List View, sorted by creation date.
Start File Sequencer and determine a starting number, then point it at the folder of images.
You can then import the images into FCP in the right order. They will be sorted by their new name.
It's pretty much self-explanatory to use but you might want to do this on a small batch of copies of your images first, to get the hang of it.

FCP X not recognising Anamorphic clips

I have several thousand clips captured as PAL SD anamorphic
They were captured from Digibeta using the AJA Kona Preset Prores 720x576 Anamorphic.
When imported into FC X, there seems to be no way of telling it how to display those clips
correctly. I need to apply + 33% on X in tranform to display correctly.
My Project is custom set to 720x576 Anamorphic but the clips do not conform
to that size in the timeline. Changing the frame size in QT also has no effect.
Short of a trip to Compressor, has anyone devised a way to get imported
anamorphic clips to display correctly in X?
I can't be the only one struggling with this!

I've tried to get it to recognize prores anamorphic without success, just like you. The only way I've been able to get FCPX to properly recognize anamorphic footage is for it to be using the DV codec. I have to think this is a bug and/or missing feature that Apple will fix in a future release, but you should definitely provide feedback to make the request.
