FCP 7 - PSD file in BIN shows diff than layer properties

steps to reproduce this issue, please confirm you have it too before I submit a bug report:
1. FCP 7
2. Photoshop CS5 Extended - setup iPhone 4 size file (640 x 960 at 326 ppi)
3. create multiple layers
4. import the PSD file into FCP 7
5. setup BIN columns to display file resolution
6. notice that BIN shows 640 x 960
7. double click PSD file - shows in TL
8. navigate to PSD in TL, pick any layer
9. right click Item Properties, Format - will show at 640 x 964
Ive tried recreating a PSD from scratch - a test scratch file if you will, and the problem persists.
Tried restarting this Mac - persists.
Tried software update - there's nothing left to update

sorry I might have misread your post. To clarify: yes the sequence and PSD files are both SHOWING IN FCP as 640 x 960
The issue came to light as after importing additional a layers, I noticed that they appear wider when 2x clicked on from the TL versus the BIN.
Further, the layers will also "stretch" to the layer's size even though the (text) data within the layer is far smaller than the layer itself. This "stretching" phenomena I swear Ive seen before somewhere years ago... cant quite recall the details.
The layers in my PSD mostly only have text on them, the text bounding box will stretch to layer boundaries as if the matte background werent part of the layer. This behavior is also incorrect, the matte matters....

  • Why are ACR PSD files 10-20 percent larger than the same file resaved in PSD?

Why are ACR > PSD files 10-20 percent larger than the same file resaved in PSD? I posted this many years ago and never found an answer. Now that my drives fill up quicker, I thought I might chase this question a little bit further.
Same .CR2 saved within ACR either with cmd-R or open ACR within PSD, the saved file is 34.5mb. Resave that same file (no edits) within PSD either with or without Max-compatible and the file is now 30.7mb. Another file that is 24.5 becomes 19.5MB.
Why the difference? Is ACR and PSD actually using different compression strategies?
    thanks.
Mac 10.8.5 / CC / ACR 8.4.1 - but this has been a consistent behavior over many years and versions, CS6 / CC.

    Hi Jeff
If it is RLE it's not as efficient as LZW:
Saved ACR>PSD = 40.1MB  (sample image this AM)
opened in PS and resaved as PSD = 30.8MB
resaved as TIF without LZW = 40.1MB    (this adds to your thought that the ACR>PSD doesn't us any compression)
    resaved as TIF/LZW = 9.6MB

I'm within arms reach to a rack of 40TB of drives (doesn't include off-site drives), and all 2TB drives are being recycled to 4TB drives, as a result the rack is always growing. Actually the ACR>PSD files don't really make a difference in our long term storage, only for the nightly backups. But anyway, how you save, what you save etc. should all be part of the discussion.
.... so in my case, throw in an excess MB here and there and all of a sudden you are talking TB's. Plus advantages in backup times, drive life, and energy use.
Somebody added compression into the PS>PSD format, but it wasn't included in the ACR>PSD format, was it a decision or an oversight? If it's just a matter of making ACR compatible with PS when saving the same PSD format..... then why not?

I placed a psd file with transparent background on another layer in my InDesign document. The layer below has a color (RGB). When the psd file is placed it changes the color on the layer below. I've tried other psd files thinking something is wrong with my file, but get the same result. I have tried for days to figure this out. Can anyone help me?

Wow, thank you! That was fast. I googled that question to death and even bought (another) book on CS5 and never saw that answer. Thank you so much. You made a very good ending to my day! I'd buy you a beer if I could!!

  • Psd file does not show preview in Creative Cloud Assets Activity Tab

I've tried to share a psd file however the preview will not show up in creative cloud assets under the activity tab. It only shows a blank page icon. Although, you can view the file in the extract tab. However, this is a problem because I need to be able to share the file with the client to be able to view and comment on it, and be able to switch between past and current versions. Right now they are not able to do that.  I am using Libraries as well and have smart objects placed from my Library.

Please try the workaround posted here:

This seems to have worked for a few other users.  Hopefully we'll be able to release a fix to this issue soon.

  • Imported PSD files don't show layers

    Hello Touch-Community,
Via Creative Clouse, I imported several PSD files on my iPad3 who consist of several layers. However, independ which file I import these PSD files open without layers. That is, they open displaying the layers who were enabled (visible) when they were saved in Photoshop.
Does this means I only can create layers in Touch, but not work with already existing layers from non-Touch PSD files?
    Thank you,
    Michael

Correct. (Kinda sorta.) You can export PS Touch projects as PSD and PSDX files into Photoshop CC/CS6 and have their layers preserved, but if you import a PSD file into PS Touch, the layers will be flattened. I imagine this was done as a failsafe mechanism. (PS Touch works with 12 layers max, versus the thousands of layers available in Photoshop CC/CS6.)
Oddly, once you open a PSDX file in Photoshop CC/CS6, you cannot save it as a PSDX; you're forced into saving as another compatible format like PSD. (I'm thinking this was another failsafe mechanism since PS Touch does not support features such as adjustment layers.)
PSDX files can be uploaded and downloaded from Creative Cloud to PS Touch and have their layers preserved.

  • Transparency Issues with PSD files in FCP 7

I'm having some weird file layer transparency issues with FCP 7. I'm working on a project that's made up entirely of graphics drawn in Photoshop CS5. They Photoshop settings were done to match an HDTV 1080i (16:9) sequence in FCP. In FCP, the pixels were set to square, field dominance to none, frame rate to 29.97 and compressor is Apple ProRes 422.
I exported my PSD files out of Photoshop, with each layer being exported to its own file. In general, things were fine, but there were a few files where you could see the outline of the character against the background, but mind you that this is only visible once the video is rendered out in the FCP timeline. Nothing is visible in Photoshop, nor is it visible while viewing from the Browser in FCP. I told this to the artist and he went back and made corrections, making sure everything was on a transparent background, but the result was still the same - once I rendered the graphics out in FCP, these edge lines were visible.
I then went back into Photoshop, opened all the files that were giving me trouble, clicked on the "foreground color" and changed it to a color other than white, then back to white and hit ok. That seemed to work - even when rendered out, I was getting no artifacts, until I tried enlarging the graphics over 100%.
Also, with some of the same graphics, I was trying to layer them so that a guy was in the foreground with other people and a van behind him in the background. Once again, no problem in Photoshop, but once brought into FCP, the background people were actually being displayed over the main foreground character.
I'm pretty baffled - what to do? I'll attach a photo of the weird lines around the characters. It might be hard to see at this size, but if you download and enlarge it to 300% or so, you'll see what I mean.

Just saw that Adam's original post was an older one.  Will keep this here anyway to maybe help the most recent poster.

Adam, did you try what David said about pointing to the root folder?  Did that work?
When I copy the SD card, I name a new folder on my hard drive something specific, like Smith Wedding.  Then I copy everything inside the SD card to that new folder.  The first level inside my new folder now has folders for
    AVF_INFO
    PRIVATE
and on down from there.  When you open Log and Transfer, point it to the Smith Wedding folder (of course whatever you have named yours).
ClipWrap2 also works great to convert the files beforehand if you want.
What camera are you using?  I have the Sony NX30 and it was giving me fits because the .mts files don't ingest if the clips are longer than 11 min. My problem is that I'm still on FCP 6.0.6.  I think 7.0.3 fixed that.  But I did find enough work-arounds to keep the camera.

  • Preview PSD file icons

I just switched fom CS4 to CS5 and now my PSD files no longer show me a preview of the images. I know it has nothing to do with the versions because I have saved CS5 PSDs and the icons still do not show the actual image, just the standard PS icon. How can I set CS5 to show me the actual image of the PSD file on the icon instead of a standard PS icon?

Change all instances of the Photoshop version to whatever you're using, i.e., "Photoshop.Image.9" becomes "Photoshop.Image.11" if you are using CS4.
Save as Install.reg, right click and choose Merge. Make sure you have the psicon.dll where it's supposed to be. Google for this info if you don't have the icon already in place.
Is this a hack? Depends on your definition. Photoshop used to do this whenever you installed a version prior to CS.
Of course, the usual disclaimers and warnings apply: May cause data and or hair loss. May contribute to swollen hemorrhoids, painful rectal itch and erectile dysfunction. Do not let children play with the reg file without supervision. Consult a doctor immediately if monkeys fly out of your butt.
OK, seriously now, data loss is the real concern. Most folks never had the problem but some did and that's why Adobe scuttled the icon thing.

  • Problems with photoshop psd files in Lightroom 2

I've been using Photoshop with raw and jpeg images for years, until just recently i started learning Lightroom 2 by watching the Kelby Training series online. I have learned a ton, but there are some things that i am just not able to figure out and for some reason they have not addressed my issues on Kelby.com.
    Here is my list:
    1. When i edit my images in lightroom and then click on a specific image to edit it in photoshop because it needs something removed for example, lightroom does not do what Matt Kloskowski on Kelby says lightroom should do. It does not open up a box asking how i want to edit the image. supposedly a box listing these three things should appear: edit a copy with lightroom adjustments, edit a copy, edit the original. I already changed my preferences so that images would be taken into photoshop as PSD files with prophotoRGB, like he said to do. Instead of opening up this box, it just opens the image in photoshop. When i save the image after editing it, it does save it  as a _edit-psd, but when i close the image and go back into lightroom, the psd file does not show up. supposedly, the psd file should be stacked right next to the original image and it is not there. when i look at the images in the finder, it shows the psd file.
is there another setting that i need to change?
    2. when i want to covert my nef raw files to jpeg for printing and burning dvds for clients, what is the best way to do this? i've done it by exporting to jpeg. but why, when i jpeg, does lightroom not use the jpeg images? for example, when i run a slideshow of a collection of images, it uses the lightroom edited nef files, PLUS, since LR does not show the psd files, the changes i made on photoshop do not show up on the slideshow either! it seems to use the psd files when converting to jpeg, so if i could just figure out a way to use the jpeg images for the slideshow all the edits should be there.do i need to import the jpeg files back into LR as a new collection?
    3. when i convert to jpeg using photoshop, there are xmp files. why are there no xmp files with the original images when LR is used? where is all the information that belongs with the RAW images?
ok. i actually have a ton more questions, but i'll start with these for now.
    Thank you so much!

Check the destination you have specified in the Import panel.  It needs to point to a location that Lightroom can read and more important write files to.  Usually the error message (in English) says “files cannot be read” and this really means that LR was unable to copy the files to the destination so then when it tried to import from that destination not file were found to read.

  • Tips on using Aperture with Photoshop PSD files

For all the people like me coming to Aperture with hundreds of Photoshop files, I would like to offer what I've learned so far in this area.
    1. If Aperture is importing your psd files but not showing an image, you probably need to change some preferences in PS. Apple has a tech note showing how to set the PS prefs here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302624
Warning: all of the choices should be set to the ones onscreen, not just "maximize compatibility". And even then, I have found I can't simply re-save the file to produce the image Aperture needs. I had to use "Save As" from Photoshop, creating a new file, to import a visible image file into Aperture.
    2. Once the psd file is in Aperture, you need to realize that Aperture treats it as a master and won't let you make further changes to it. So, if you select this psd file and choose "Edit in external editor," Aperture will create a duplicate file and send that to Photoshop, thus protecting you. If you don't want two full-size masters of the same image in your library, there are two work-arounds.
Very Important Tip: in the Aperture preferences you must tell Aperture to use the psd file format for the "Edit In External Editor" command. My copy of Aperture defaulted to the TIFF format, which is bad if you want your layers preserved as you should.
One work-around is to import the psd file(s) as referenced masters. When you want to make changes to the file in PS, choose the file in Aperture and select "Show in Finder." From the finder, open the file in PS, make your changes, save, return to Aperture and update the preview if Aperture hasn't automatically done so. I don't like this method because it requires referenced masters and I want all of my files managed by Aperture.
Second method works with managed masters in the Aperture library or referenced masters for that matter. However you cannot use this technique if a psd file in your Aperture library has versions you want to save. You can only do this with files that have not spawned versions which you want to keep. In other words, be very careful. Best to do this as shortly after the import process.
Pick the file, choose "Edit in External Editor." Aperture duplicates the file and opens that in PS. Make some changes, save and return to Aperture. Notice the original master and this new changed version are in a stack. There should be a badge on the changed version indicating it has been edited externally. Here's the trick: Unstack the two images and delete the original master. Now you have only the externally edited master in your Aperture library. If you choose "Edit In External Editor" with this file, Aperture will not duplicate it and send the duplicate to PS, it will send the selected file.
Apple has a useful FAQ on using "Open With External Editor" here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302820

My suspicion is that Aperture is going to try loading the video card VRAM with your image .... 600Mb worth. So, paging in/out of system memory is going to be a royal pain.
Check that you haven't any alpha channels saved, as Aperture will save them but will not composite them.
Finally, to disable previews, uncheck in preferences, AND also uncheck Maintain previews under the library projects list gear icon.
    Cheers!

  • Photoshop cc does not associate with psd files?

I have a simple answer to the problem of photoshop cc not being able to associate psd files and not showing in the options window when you try to associate it with the psd file? How do I get it into the forum where it belongs?

Photoshop does associate with PSD and PSB files on both platforms.
It sounds like your OS is confused about the available file associations.
Which OS version are you using?

  • FCP Reference Files & Digital Mediapress Card

I've been using FCP Reference files with my Wired Digital Mediapress card for about 6 years very successfully. It means booting back into OS9 (9.2.2) to run the software, but the card has saved me a untold amount of time over the years, so I've no probnlem with that.
Just in the last couple of weeks however the Digital Mediapress software (V1.1.2) won't accept an FCP Reference file. It's more than happy with a self contained MOV file, but not a Reference file. And for the life of me I can't figure out why.
I've looked at the stats for all the files and everything looks fine. No strange formats.
Anyone else still using this card and software?
    Anyone suggest any idea?
The card and software are no longer supported by Wired, so i can't ask there.
It's not a huge problem, I'll just start making self contained MOV files of my DVD projects, which only adds about 20-40 mins to the project, which is still a lot less time than other MPEG2 encoding options.
I'm just curious to figure out whats going on.

    The problem has cleared itself.
Not sure wht caused it or the fix.

  • How can I edit separate layers in a psd file that was saved as only one layer?

A designer provided me with a finished design and provided the psd, eps and ai files.  I'd like to make some minor changes in PS and would like to access individual layers - e.g. the text, background, etc.  When I open the psd file, however, it only has one layer.  how do I break out the original layers so that I can edit them?

You can't. Once it's been flattened, you can't unflatten it. Talk to your designer: he/she will most likely have the unflattened version available.

  • PSD file is broken

    Hello,
I've been working on my picture for a week. It had around 10-12 layers and background was black. But today when I opened my psd file I saw just one black layer. The others are gone. Is it possible to fix this file some how? It's very important. Thank you.

I didn't and the strange thing is it still has correct preview picture when I choose to open it. But as far as file's opened it's empty, just black background. It seems I have to repaint all picture again, ahhh it's so bad:(((.
