FCP 7 White viewer

My viewer and canvas are white, even with NTSC DV footage.
With Sony EX1 footage they are pixelated or solarized looking.
All EX1 clips have been transferred with the Sony software into .mov files.
I took one and converted it to DVCProHD with compressor and it still looks the same; white in the viewer and canvas.
FCP 5 was fine, This happened after I upgraded to 7.

I just upgraded 15 iMacs in our classroom to FCP 7, and the white screens of doom happened on 2 of them. I have tried all the suggestions with no results. The viewer in DVDSP also seems to be nothing but white on these two machines. The two machines affected are the only two of the same machine model (7,1) and all stations are 10.5.8

  • FCP7: White Viewer and White Canvas (set to RGB)

    Hello,
I had been using the universal version of the first Final Cut Studio for a few years now without any issue. When I upgraded to FCS3, I can't get FCP7 to show any footage (or even Color Bars) in the Viewer or Canvas. You hear the audio of the footage but it's all WHITE. Both frames are set to RGB (not alpha).
I have fully re-installed FCP7 but I still see the same results. It doesn't seem to matter what easy setup I use either.
I can take the same DV or HDV footage and play it in Quicktime outside of FCP7 so I'm confident that my onboard graphics card is not having some sort of trouble.
I have a case open with AppleCare but so far they have not resolved this issue.
Is this White Viewer and Canvas issue happening to anyone else here?
    Thanks.

    Trash your preferences?
#44: FCP acting weird - Trash Prefs
Shane's Stock Answer #44: FCP acting weird or unusual. Just not like is normally should
If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/trashing_fcpprefs.html
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.
    4) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

  • White Viewer and Canvas screens in FC Studio & Not an Idiot

    iMac
    2.66 GHz Core Duo
    2GB RAM
    OS X 10.5.8
    FCS 3
The viewer and canvas have apparently decided to flip to white and remain there. But first, they decided they'd rather display a strange, posterized/solarized version of whatever clip was loaded at the time.
Viewer prefs set properly to RGB
    Background set to black.
Changing display prefs from millions to thousands then back again - fail.
Clean reinstall of FC Studio - fail.
    QT test clip - 720x480, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    Any ideas?

Viewer prefs set properly to RGB<</div>
Okay, you know that one. Good.
    Background set to black. <</div>
    Completely irrelevant. Not good.
Changing display prefs from millions to thousands then back again - fail. <</div>
Right, but a restart of FCP or the Mac might also be part of that debug just to rule out all possibilities.
Clean reinstall of FC Studio - fail. <</div>
Of course. Reinstalling Apple software is the LAST thing we'd suggest. Well, it's the last thing I would suggest. It is almost always a complete waste of time for a long list of reasons but mainly for only one: unlike Windows apps, Apple software just doesn't work that way.
    QT test clip - 720x480, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC <</div>
Okie dokie. When you play this clip in QT what happens?
when you launch Motion and attempt to run a previously saved comp what happens?
    Any ideas? < </div>
Debugging your particular issue is not going to be easy. Trying to figure out if it's FCP, QT, your graphics card, your monitor, or some other weird and obscure setting is a question, largely, of having a good feel for your system's behaviors and application inventory and history.
Stick with it, we're going to be asking you some really idiotic questions and asking you to perform some really lame tests.

  • Imports from iMovie 4.0.1 won't play in FCP HD viewer

I used iMovie to capture lengthy DV clips from a Sony DCR-HC65. Tapes were recorded on Sony HC26 and Panasonic ?? and imported to FCP for editing.
I find the video will stall but the audio continues as I review them in the FCP
viewer. Stall points are not consistent. Tried to work around and edit anyway but FCP stalls forcing quit.
Capture seemed to go well and created clips a timecode breaks and auto at
    9:28 segments.
I have not experienced this before.
I recently added a 500GB hdd to my G5. Also have a Lacie 230GB firewire external that works fine all be it slower.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

After you capture long clips with many shots in FCP, select them in the browser, then select "DV Start/Stop detect" in the Mark menu. This puts a marker at each place you started or stopped the camera. To see them, click on the disclosure triangle which will appear next to them in the Browser.... double click one of them, and then the Viewer will display only the material from that marker to the next.
You can drag these markers from the Browser to a bin and create subclips from them too.

  • FCP 7, viewer clear, but canvas and export blurry

Started with screen recordings provided to me that made using quicktime 10
took quicktime 10 screen recordings and converted them to prores422 HQ in compressor (settings from compressor below)
    imported into FCP 7.
They look great in viewer, reasonably sharp and crisp, but them very blurry in canvas and when I export to quicktime movie (not using quicktime conversion). Been using FCP 7 a couple years but my knowledge in many aspects is sub professional.
Tried creating a new sequence to get the sequence to match the settings of the quicktime prores422 screen capture movies but to no avail. The settings of the sequence are not the same as the screen capture movies...I even tried to change the sequence settings but no luck (then exited FCP without saving so as not to screw anything up).
Im probably breaking basic rules here...any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!!!
Compressor settings for file conversion above:

Here is additional information on the problem.
My sequence includes mostly screen captures, but also some other video (settings below) and some JPEGs.  The other video and the JPEGs look fine...both in canvas and when I export sequence to quicktime.  The screen captures look terrible...text is very blurry.  Same screen captures look fine in my viewer, just goes awry when in canvas and export.
Format of screen capture clips (quicktime 10 screen capture > compressor prores 422 HQ):
1440x900, apprle prores 422 HQ, data rate 5.6 MB/S, pixel aspect square, field dominance none, composite normal.  Started with 4 files of the screen capture from compressor, then edited them into many little pieces in FCP...the size of those files post compressor are around 2GB each.
The sequence (by default) had settings of:
frame size: 720x480 NTSC DV 3:2
pixel aspect ratio: NTSC - CCIR 601 / DV 720x480
    field dominance lower(even)
quicktime compressor settings: apple prores 422 LT
Vast majority of clips are the same as screen capture clips.  But just in case its part of the problem, I have also have a couple video clips of that have settings:
    frame size:  720x480
    compressor:  DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    data rate 3.6mb/s
pixel aspect: NTSC - CCIR 601
    field dominance: Lower/even
also have a couple JPEGs, their settings are:
    frame size 2500x2084
    compressor: photo-jpeg
    field dominance: none
Thank you!!!  I've been using final cut a while, but don't think I would have gotten anywhere without the help and generosity of people that are way beyond my knowledge and skills.  I am happy to provide any more info.  I really appreciate it.

  • Audio not working in FCP 7 viewer

I was working on a project on FCP 7 and everything is fine. I stepped away from my computer for a few minutes and now the audio on the viewer doesn't work! The audio on the sequence works fine. But the audio from a clip on the viewer isn't working. Could it be a KONA LHe issue?
    Can anyone help? Much thanks!

Whenever FCP begins to act in unexpected ways, usually the first step is to trash your FCP preferences.
You can download Preference Manager (free) from Digital Rebellion and it will do it for you.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Your preferences will be reset to default values the next time you launch FCP.

  • FCP 7 Viewer is Darker than what it should be

In my current FCP7, while project and sequence is under Pro Res 422, the viewer displays darker images, i tried to change the System Setting>Playback Control>Gamma Correction to Approximate instead of Accurate, this increased the gamma(brightness) of the clip a fair bit, but even when comparing to a normal footage played in QT7 (with FCP Compatability disabled or not) in FCP, it's still a littlebit more washed, grey-ish, not as vivid as playing in QT7
I know this is a known bug, and i remember solving this problem last time by changing some codec somewhere in FCP project to another coded instead of 422, then back to 422 and that solved the problem, i'm not sure
    any help?
    Thanks

    Hey videogal3
After a bit of research back then, I found a temporary solution, I've now switched to FCPX so I didn't bother anymore, but here it is
    in System Settings under FCP7
    under Tab Playback Control
Under Gamma Correction: Change from Accurate to Approximate
Mind you, In my own experience, I dont think that's close to what u see in quick time either, but it certainly is better than before, at least not dark where u can't see. And after exporting, the movie is fine too
    So Yeah, hope this helps

  • FCP X viewer window plays back video with color errors

I am new to Final Cut X and Final Cut PRo in general. I am doing a project at work where I needed to learn FCPX.
I figured out a lot pretty fast. But one issue i am having is that all of the clips being played back in the viewer window are being played back with this weird color error. Its happens to movie clips, still photos and titles. See below, This is a screenshot of what it looks like. When I first installed FCP it wasn't doing this but now it started doing it all the time. Its annoying because I can't see the transitions properly, and sometimes video gets out of sync with audio.
I am running Lion 10.7.1 with a Mac Pro 2 x 2.8ghx Quad Core Xeon. 16GB RAM. Nothing special on the HD's but they are at 7200rpm.
I tried adjusting prefs for playback quality, I tried transcoding media. However, its doing this to a still frame jpeg as well, which should be giving the machine ay trouble. I feel like my machine should be able to keep up with FCPX.
EDIT: I also restarted my machine a bunch of times and killed all processes that weren't necessary for the machine to run and for FCP to be working. I also have an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT graphics card, which meets the requirements for FCP X.

I am also seeing the same issue. I have an Eizo Display and if I color correct with the i1 it behaves as above. It has been driving me crazy. If I switch back to standard profile it seems to work but my dislplay is not color calibrated. Is there a fix?

  • Connecting Panasonic HVX200 to FCP to view the color chart realtime

    Dear All,
I want to use the waveform and vectorscope monitors from FCP to test my HVX200 while aiming at a DSC Labs color chart.
Of course, one of the ways is film the chart first, and then Log and Capture the shot to FCP and check the waveform and vectorscope.
But I am thinking if I can use my Mac Book to connect to my HVX200 to view the waveform realtime. Possible? Any suggestion? Any tool needed to connect them?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

You need something like VEESCOPE for this:

  • White menu screen and white viewer screen

I'm having a problem with all visuals related to projects. Any template or video I add does not show up except for outlines. This is happening with past projects as well and only just began about a week ago. I've switched Final Rendering, dumped prefs. After dumping prefs, I'll load a known working project and is shows just fine. But, as soon as I click anywhere on the screen, everything turns to white. This happens in Menu and Viewer tabs. I hear audio but no video. Thanks in advance.

That sounds a little severe. Have you made any changes at all to your Mac - changed graphics cards or anything? Also, do you use a font management app like suitcase? If you do, have you turned off any of the fonts DVDSP uses as part of the system? I know it sounds odd, but this has caused all kinds of issues for people in the past and the only resolution was to turn on the system fonts again.
Have you run a hardware test (using the Apple hardware check disc that your mac came with)? I am no expert on any of this stuff, but check your graphics card... I had one with bad memory and many, many glitches started to appear which just got worse over time. Changed the graphics card and all was fine.

  • FCP 7, viewer and canvas window is dark in lion

    How to fix this problem???

The image in the Viewer and Canvas windows are 1 to 2 apperture too dark. When I convert a timeline to .mov file into Compressor or Quicktime converter, has the picture (movie) the right exposure ...
    hope my English is understandable...

  • FCP 7 viewer don´t playback well

Hi I have some video files that come out from a Gopro HD camera, recorded at 720p 59.94fps. I have converted from h264 to apple prores LT, preserving the frame rate and video size.
When I hit the file into the preview window to desire in/out points before take it to the timeline, it starts playing but the video quits like if you hit the pause, audio keeps playing though.
I tried to copy all the videos that I was to work with to my internal HD with the same result.
I have another files that came out a sony HD camera (M2TS) converted to apple prores LT playing in the viewer fine, on the same project.
One thing that I tried too, that seems to work ok, if I grab the entire video and put it in the timeline, I can play well through canvas (no sound though I need to render).
    My apple specs are:
    iMac 24"
    Intel core 2 Duo 3.06ghz
    4gb ram
    snow leopard
    nvidia geoforce 8800 GS 512mb

  • Export settings from FCP for viewing on a PC?

Hi, I need to export a FCP sequence so that it can be played from a clients PC hooked up to a screen.
I've tried H.264 but there's a massive loss of quality in the result. Am I missing a setting? The Pro Res export looks perfect but I understand this wont play on a PC and as the file's going to be passed around I wont be able to install anything on the end users PC.
New to AV so would be grateful for any help.
    Thanks

How are you exporting h264?  There are bunch of very useful presets in compressor that can deliver excellent quality.  First off, I think you need to make sure that the pc user has quicktime installed.  If you can't controll what's installed on the pc, I would purchase one of the flip4mac options which will allow you to export a wmv which will open on any pc (I think).  Sorenson Squeeze also offers wmv export options (I think).

  • FCP movie viewing options

    Greetings all,
Maybe this is an RSQ (Really Stupid Question) but... is there a way to display the movie in the canvass against a black or neutral background, sort of like the "Present Movie" option in the Quicktime Player. I have searched around the manual but can't find a reference to this possibility. Would be nice when you are showing producers, clients etc what you are working on.
    Thanks as usual,
    DaveB

Not that I know of, but you could just export a reference movie and do what you suggested in QT. You could also rearrange the windows so the canvas took up the whole screen, saved it as a custom window layout, and then just use it when you need to playback as you say.

  • FCP shows WHITE image for DVPAL Quicktime movies

I have a strange issue on a friends FCP system
    FCP 5.1.4 OSX 10.4.11
Final cut pro shows no image ( it's white ) in Final cut pro viewer. Audio is fine.
Normally this is the case when a codec is missing but they are captured DVPAL movies and the source files play fine in the quicktime player. FCP shows DVPAL compression on item properties.
Already thrashed the preferences/caches. No difference. If the codec really was missing it wouldn't played in the quicktime player right?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Make sure theat FCP's Viewer window is in RGB mode - NOT Alpha.
