FCP 7 Yosemite QT Export

I've updated to Yosemite but when I export a QT movie (Not self-contained movie) it is unplayable.  QT opens up and starts trying to convert it and then directs me to an apple page about codecs.  Everything worked before I updated to Yosemite.
Trying to get a sequence from FCP 7 to Compressor 4 since I can't seem to send it right from FCP 7 to Compressor 4 even after reading help files here.

It may be that some of your QuickTime components need to be updated. In Yosemite, they removed the Software Update function that used to live under the Apple Menu, now you need to open the App Store.app and then check the Updates Tab to see if there is anything that is needing an update.
If you export the move as self contained, which is always preferable, do you have the same results? You can export a small section to check.

  • FCP won't export MPEG2

Just upgraded my OS to 10.5.7 from 10.4.9. No other changes to the system have been made but now FCP 4 will not export MPEG2. FCP locks up every time I try. FCP will still export QT and others, just not MPEG2. Never been a problem in the past. Any ideas?

You were delightfully clear. My point it your previous experience doesn't count for anything because of the drastic change you've made to the computer.
Think of it this way. Your computer is a human body that someone decides to do a heart transplant on even though the current heart seems to be functioning just peachy. Not only do they do a heart transplant, they don't bother to fully remove the previous version but simply splice in a few new valves and maybe a larger diameter aorta. So, this poor guy wakes up the next morning and finds that he can't walk because the new cobbled up heart just doesn't function as well as the older perfectly functioning one. All this flies in the face of the assurances of the Doctors (Apple marketing dept). They told him everything would be WONDERFUL when they were finished. Yea, right.
Let's not forget your liver 4.5 is not supported by heart 10.5.7

  • Fcp 7 not exporting self contained

Hi, help me out. Fcp 7 is exporting reference movie which doesnt play on other systems. I need to create a self contained movie for distribution. But neither quicktime conversion  nor checking 'make self contained' is helping out. I'm doubtful whether there r some special system settings to be checked or some export setting need to altered. Or a program error?

Please post your question on the Final Cut Studio forum.

  • Audio falls out of sync with FCP sequence after export from STP

    Hey all,
editing sound on a short film. sent FCP sequence to sweeten the dialog and add effects, according to the timeline it is the same length as sequence length in
FCP, but when exporting from STP to FCP to complete movie, the sound ends up being about 10 frames longer than the video and starts in sync and falls out of sync over the duration of the film.
Have tried changing preference settings in STP, exported about 5 ways to breakfast and all have same result.
Anyone have a solution to this problem?
    Much thanks,
    Holly

I just experienced this same thing, and as Christof says, it had to do with 'Easy Setup' and 'all formats'. I've been editing a picture shot on RED in Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) at 2K (2048 x 1152) and 24fps...FCS 3 (FCP 7 latest version). Whenever you trash preferences or start up FCP new, you get the 'easy setup' menu. Previously, I could just hit 'okay' and go ahead into FCP and change the settings/resolutions within the project...even if the 'easy setup' default was, say, DV/NTSC 29.97. Also, when opening up an active project after trashing prefs, the project itself would still have the same editing/playback settings/resolutions, even if the 'easy setup' window had its default DV/NTSC setting. Plus, if you create a new timeline and its default is one format, once you drop a different format into it, it asks you if it should adjust to that format anyway, and of course, you say yes and everything is fine.
Well....in this most recent FCP update, whenever I'd export an AIFF from the timeline and reimport....or if I'd just import an AIFF...it would do something to the playback rate of that newly imported/reimported sound file and suddenly its sync has drifted all over the place within just a minute or so. But strangely, it wouldn't do it to audio that's attached to picture (.mov/MP4/etc.)....only isolated audio files (AIFF/WAV). So naturally, I wondered if something was going on during the export process or the like.
The solution is to make sure that when you open FCP (newly, or after trashing prefs), make sure you pick the settings/format/framerate in that 'Easy Setup' window that matches what you intend to edit as closely as possible. In my case, the format is Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), 2048 x 1152 @ 24fps, and I use a Blackmagic Multibridge so I have settings for it. Hence......*Format; HD, Frame Rate: 24, Use: Blackmagic HDTV 1080P 24 - 10 bit.* Whereas the default upon startup is....Format: (all formats), Frame Rate: 29.97, Use: DV/NTSC 48KHz.
You can also set these in the 'Audio Video Settings' menu. Now, whenever I export and reimport an AIFF, or just import an AIFF (like the soundmix prepared by our sound designer), sync stays and there's no drift. So make sure you've picked the right settings when starting or reopening a project, again as Christof pointed out.

the results i get a odd. - the video exports fine, except for the beginning titles, instead a still frame image from somewhere else in the video occupies that intro, until the first transition- in this case- dip to white, then the rest of the video is fine. the portion of the beginning  that does not show are composed of:  livetype text credits in V2 - in which i have done a manual opacity fade up and down - so the livetype text fades in, over matte color solid in V1. in the exported video -i do not see any of this, all i see is a seemingly random still from somewhere else in the video. i can however hear the audio as it is supposed be.
cant figure out why this is happening. anybody know?
    i think the livetype files are 1920 x 1080.

this has only recently started happening and doesn't seem to be consistent.
im wondering if it has to do with the live type files, or the white solid?…
    or the conversion settings above?

Earlybird is exporting H264 ... the Key Frames setting is determining the GOP length. This value should really be determined based on the complexity of the video, to my understanding, the actual frame rate has no bearing on it. If you have very complex fast moving content then a low Key Frame rate is advisable to ensure good image quality (although it will adversely affect the filesize) whereas if you have slow moving or static content (like an interview subject) then a higher Key Frame rate will still produce a good image but at a smaler filesize. The default of 24 should be pretty much fine as a catchall starting point.
    Earlybird
Corrupted render files (and render references) can be a pain because FCP will use those files and references  in place of the original media when building the export. And so it should as it does't want to waste time re-rendering sections that are apparently already rendered. Unfortuantely, as noted, if the render file has gone bad and/or starts referencing the wrong media then you'll get these wierd flashes of completely unexpeced and unwanted footage showing up where it shouldn't be. When you trash those files then QT / FCP will just go back and re-reference the original media ... so it's usually a worthwhile step to take just in case thats the problem.  The worse case scenario is that it only that doesn't work and you spend some time unecessarily re-rendering.
As to why these files go bad? That I don't know. Why do Preferences get corrupted? That I don't know either but it definitely happens :-(

  • FCP 4 xml export

I tried to get help on a blog but my last question wasn't answered.
    This is the thread:
I’m trying to export an XML file from FCP 4 to Premiere CS5. After I name the file and save it to my external hard drive, I am only able to get about 50% of the way through the export process before FCP quits and asks if I want to send a report.
I read on a blog that the file can be exported, but only with Apple XML Interchange Format version 4 (or better); my only option is Version 1.
How can I export this file, since it fails to work with version 1?
    Reply:
XML was in infancy when FCP4 was released so it is not surprising that it isn't working. Plus you will need to see if you can open it in a more recent version of FCP before re-exporting in the correct XML format.
EDL is probably the only way you will be able to move this project. What is the codec of your media? Or are you planning on recapture in CS5?
I wanted to open the timeline in Premiere to do more editing.
    Frame Size: 720 x 480
Codec: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC at Most Quality
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Reply:
Best bet is to get the old FCP project to open in Final Cut 7 and then it should open directly into CS5.5. There is no surety that a FCP4 project can be opened by FCP7 however. Apple are terrible at backwards and forwards compatibility.
What you are trying to do can only be done via EDl as far as I know and then relink media if it is in a format that CS5 can read.
So do I have to purchase FCP 7 in order to import the timeline into Premiere?
My last question wasn't answered. So do I have to have FCP 7 in order to get my timeline into Premiere?

Or find someone who has it and will do it for you. Yes, you need v6 or 7.
This is the Final Cut Pro X forum BTW.

  • FCP truncates .wmv export?

Does FCP Pro stop exporting a .wmv file from a sequence because of some setting that I can control? I've tried on several projects and it stops half way through.

    Welcome to the forum!
Can you post a little more about your system and what steps you're taking? OS, QT, FCP flip4mac versions as well as Mac info might help in diagnosing the problem.
Also, does the export stop at the exact same place every time? If so, it may be a corrupted media or render file. And one last thing; if you have the trail version of flip4mac, your WMV exports will be limited to 30 seconds or so.

  • Choppy video in FCP and upon export to QT

I have been working with DV for years and recently upgraded to the Panasonic HMC150 (AVCHD). Whenever I worked with DV in FCP, there were little stutters in the video when playing a panning shot at normal speed, and I always assumed this was just a limitation of working with DV. Once I exported this footage to DVD or DV Tape, everything was smooth. The problem persisted whenever I would make a web video (either with Flash or MP4).
You can see some samples here of what I mean:
    http://lastcuthomes.com/videos/3242MeadowlandsLane/
    and
    http://lastcuthomes.com/videos/1030HamiltonAve/
Now that I have my AVCHD cam, the same problem remains. Keep in mind that, I, as a camera operator am not doing these stutters and don't have Parkinsons! All of these videos appear just fine on DVD or on tape. The issue is with FCP and it's exporting.
The current method of exporting I have now is making the final video into a full QuickTime file from FCP. Then I will either encode with On2's Flix Pro or with QuickTime Pro into an mp4 file.
Has anyone been able to solve this issue? Has anyone else had this issue?
    Thanks!
    Ted

    Bump- anyone?

  • What are the best sequence settings in FCP 5 for exporting screen capture video footage?

I capture video footage of websites in order to showcase in a demo reel. Using Snapz Pro, the compression type I have found to have the best quality is H264. When I take this footage into FCP (v5.1.4), I choose DV NTSC 48khz for the sequence setting. If I then select H264 for the sequence compression type, when I go to render I get a 'Codec error.'
The only way I am able to render properly is by choosing DV NTSC 48khz for the sequence setting and DV/DVCPRO-NTSC as my sequence compression type. The problem with this though is I get a perfect picture in the Viewer, but the picture quality in the Canvas (and the subsequent exported video) is slightly blurred.
I've been trying to find a solution to this problem off and on for years. I've finally decided now to get to the bottom of the issue. If you can solve this one you are my hero!
    Ted

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried using DVCPRO HD in the past, but the picture quality of the captured screen footage turns out blurry. The only codecs I've found that provide a perfectly clear image are H264, Animation and Uncompressed 8-bit. The problem with the latter two is that video files lasting only a few seconds measure in the 100s of MBs. Working with files that large would slow my editing and rendering down to a non-workable length.
I just don't understand why I can't edit H264 video if my sequence codec is set to H264. The 'Codec error' I get is baffling.

  • FCP Fails on Export of HDV Footage

Here's my problem in a nutshell: I have a 75 minute edit that will not export from the timeline. I have 2 tracks of video - the first track is HDV (1080i60 - imported from JVC GYHD 100U), the second is a mix of HDV b-roll (1080i60 - imported from Sony HDR-HC7) and .png and .tiff images along with some motion lower 3rds. Everything has been rendered and plays back fine in the canvas. Any time I try to export footage from the timeline it fails with "General Error" or occasionally FCP crashes. Please see below for all the different export types and methods, none of which have proven successful.
    *Export Options*
    1. QuickTime Movie - as a reference movie - current settings
    2. QuickTime Movie - as a self contained movie - current settings
    3. QuickTime Movie - changed to ProRes422
    4. Using Compressor - MPEG2 (DVD Best Quality 90 minutes - to go into DSP)
    5. Using Compressor - as a ProRes422 file
    6. Using Compressor - as DV NTSC Anamorphic
    *Steps Taken to Resolve Issue*
    1. Disk Utility to repair permissions on boot drive - permissions repaired
    2. Disk Warrior and Drive Genius on all drives - no problems reported
    3. Trashed FCP preferences
    4. Deleted render files - then export without re-rendering
    5. Deleted render files - re-render and then export
    6. Exported footage in smaller chunks - still fails
    7. Exported only V1 - still fails
    8. Created a new project - copy and pasted contents from timeline and then export
    9. Created a new project - this time with timeline as ProRes 422 and then export (this last one is currently writing, but as you can tell I'm kind of clutching at straws here...)
The only export success I have had is audio only to AC3, video so far just fails.
Next stop is to print to tape in two parts and then re-import and try and export again. The ultimate goal is to output to DVD.
If there are any suggestions or if there is anything I've overlooked, I'd be grateful for some input.

Elated - I have found the problem and, more importantly, a solution.
While converting the original footage to ProRes, Compressor complained about one of the segments (the JVC camera records in around 18 minute chunks) I was trying to import. Sure enough there were some visual glitches on playback but FCP never seemed to care, but Compressor refused to convert it to ProRes.
Which got me thinking.... back to the timeline I went. Knowing which segment had caused Compressor problems, I isolated it, and cut out all footage with distortion on it. I had used b-roll footage to cover the glitches anyway, but this time I used the blade tool to remove the offending video on V1 even though it was being obscured by V2.
As if by magic, and to my great relief, the footage rendered and as we speak DVD Studio Pro has just spat out my first burn of the DVD (mind you it did take close to 6 hours to encode the footage to MPEG2!)
So there you go folks, corrupt video footage, even though it isn't playing was enough to halt my export and suck two days from my life. Lesson learned.

  • FCP Freezes When Exporting to Flash Video (FLV)

Final Cut Pro 7.0.2 freezes when exporting to Flash Video (FLV). The resulting FLV file contains only a few seconds of the exported video. A 2009 Apple Support notice offers this re. FCP 6 and CS3 Flash Video Encoder...

Final Cut Pro: May quit unexpectedly when exporting to Flash
    Last Modified: February 13, 2009
    Article: TS2593
    Symptoms
Final Cut Pro may quit unexpectedly when you export using QuickTime Conversion if you choose Flash Video (FLV) from the Format menu.
    Products Affected
Final Cut Pro 6.x, Adobe Creative Suite 3 Flash Video Encoder
    Resolution
This can happen if you use the Adobe Creative Suite 3 Flash Video Encoder and Final Cut Pro together. This issue does not occur with the Flash Video Encoder in Adobe Creative Suite 4. To work around the issue:
Choose File > Export > QuickTime Movie.
Be sure to enable Make Movie Self-Contained.
Open the exported movie in QuickTime Player.
Export the movie to Flash from QuickTime Player.
    ===
I just installed CS5, so I would think I shouldn't be bothered with an older, problematic Flash Video Encoder. I don't think I should have to convert an MOV file to an FLV file using QuickTime Reader or anything else. Why doesn't it export correctly out of FCPro 7.0.2?

    oh well.

  • FCP X DV Export Settings

I need help with some export settings for DV in FCP X
I've downloaded the 30 trial.  I'm working with a DV clip that's about 10 minutes long.  I'd like to export the finished moved to a file format so I can brun it to a DVD and send to relatives, etc.
I've tried exporting to quicktime using current settings, changing it to progressive, even exporting to h.264.  In each case, I get different and undesirable results. Sometimes the footage is interlaced to the point where it is very obvious (sometimes it's so bad it's unwatchable).  Sometimes the footage is "shimmery" or jumpy.  My comparison point is the same film I exported to QT years ago using FCE 4.  None of these exports look close to that level of picture quality.
I was hoping to use FCP X because of it's similiarity to iMovie '11 and because of the single field processing problem affectinf the quality of DV footage with iMovie '08-'11 exports.  But I can't seem to get the export settings right.  I'm sure it's just a minor issue.
I really need some guidance on the right DV Export settings, as I have almost 100 hours of familiy footage in DV and was hoping to see improved picture quality if I used FCP X.
    I'm using a mid 2009 MacBook Pro 13 inch, 2.53ghz processor with 8GB of RAM and a 500GB 7200rpm HD.
    Thanks,
    Bryan

Well, here's an interesting phenomenon.  Until now, I have just been working on VHS-DV transfers for DVD end point. I haven't thrown any HD stuff at a DVD yet (except for an experiment on the pretty useless FCPX DVD export.)
All of those VHS projects have required chapters, so I just export media -> DV as we have discussed here. There was one 15 min segment I pulled out and made as a separate DVD for a friend.  All of these have been SD and life is good.
Just finished a 720p project.  Shared one copy out for my iPad, then went thru the proper project settings for DV Anamorphc and did the Export Media -> DV.  Checked it in QTP and saw it was 853x480 as expected. Ran it straight to iDVD since I didn't need Chapt Markers.  Made 5 copies and last night proudly played it for the recipients.  The sucker was squished to 4:3 (yes, iDVD project was set for 16:9).  That'll teach me to not play the DVD first.
Couldn't change it in QTP cuz it was already 853x480. Had to run it thru FCE first to get the 720x480 out, and then thryu QTP to change it back to 853x480.
Just thot I'd come over here and mention it.
As an additional observation, it was interesting to see that the iDVD result was no different for theVHS-DV project SD (640x480 out) whether I ran it thru FCE (720x480 out) or not.

  • How do I include Motion files in FCP "media manager" exports?

All files with a .mtn do not transfer correctly when I use media manager to duplicate a project: I get the red-dotted frame and even when I try to reconnect the frame, once rendered, remains black. I was wondering if there is a way to export Motion files there were created by exporting from FCP and "embedded" in Motion.
    Thank you for the help!

~/Titles.localized/Show Effects/Show/Lower 3rd/Lower 3rd.moti“ is the Motion file that is being used.  I was able to replace the file and when I open a project all of the lower thirds are there except they are all missing the names and titles.  I
I parsed through the .fcpevent file and found the following which seems to set the title in the effect.  Its pointing to an object with an id of 2.  But how do you get the title in the new Motion file to be the same object so that it will fill in correctly??

  • FCP playback and exporting issue

Hi, I'm having an issue in FCP where as I'm playing it, all of a sudden a picture will go really wierd - i.e. the colours will be bright blue and pink, and the picture showing will not actually be the correct image, but one from somewhere else in the timeline.
If I just hide and re-show the subtitles that are above the image, the picture is back to normal.
I thought it would just be a problem in FCP, but it also occurred when I exported using best quality in compressor.
This issue only started occurring when I started making some changes to the subtitles (there are a lot in the film) - but I don't see how that could affect it.
I also thought maybe it could be to do with the fact that I have 6 video tracks (made up of subtitles, captions, etc.)?
If anyone knows anything about why FCP is doing this, and how to stop it, I would greatly appreciate your help.
    Thanks

  • FCP won't export M2V

I am running FCP Studio and trying to export an m2v. I recently upgraded my G5 and basically put my old hard drives right into the new G5 box. Since I did that, FCP asked for a serial number again, and I entered it. OK. Now I am trying to export the Mpeg2 and it says it can't export until DVD studio Pro is serialized - but then I run DVD studio pro and it IS serialized and registered. Restart did not fix it. FCP just can't seem to tell that DVD studio pro is already serialized and won't export. Should I trash my preferences? FCP or DVD studio pro or both? Any suggestions?

    FYI....
Trying to uninstall DVD Pro and then re-installing it will not work! I ran through this problem when I upgraded to FCP Studio. The issue lies between DVD Pro and QT7, it is a bug that apple is currently trying to resolve.
I spent numerous hours on the phone with apple to get this issue resolved. The best work around at the moment is going through Compressor and making a M2V. Compressor will retain your chapter markers from FCP no worries.
The only issue is time, it takes longer using compressor but the quality is 100x better because you have more control of the VBP.
    Good Luck
