FCP and AVI DV Type 1

Hi all
I was just wondering whether or not AVI files of the type 'DV Type 1' are able to come seamlessly into FCP 5.1.2? Or will it be necessary to render the files out in order to edit them?
Best
Jamil

I tried Canopus and upon starting to open the file I received a "The source file cannot be converted by this application.".   I also tried another .avi type 2 file that  was less than 2GB in size.   Guessing it is some incompatibility or codec issue.   If anyone has any suggestions here, let me know.
I found the Ulead type to type 2 converter.  Sure enough it mangled the audio towards the end as had been reported in a post.
DVDate appears to have done the trick.  I emailed the author to verify it just re-wraps.   If anyone has any experience with DVDate let me know.
By the way, is there a way to tell if a .avi file has been re-enoded from another by using Gspot or another utility?
Here are some notes from another post and a link to DVDate.  I don't think the last comment is correct re: DVDate an audio though.

Tools for converting DV type:
-"Enosoft AVI repair tool", a tool included with "Enosoft DV Processor" -->works at 100%
-Ulead DV Type 1 to DV Type 2 Converter --> if the files are big (>4 GB) audio gets corrupted with "shshshshsh" sound.
-Canopus_DV_File_Converter V1.0.2 --> if the files are big (>4 GB) aborts before ending.
-DVDATE V7.1 --> works OK but downsamples audio to 32000Hz. (Why??)

  • Using still image in FCP and Motion

I'm using still images in Motion (and FCP) and exporting them to Quicktime movie files. What's the best size and resolution for the images and are JPGs or TIF best? I'm exporting for 720 X 480, and currently my JPGs are 4 x 6 at 300 dpi with a pixel width and height of 1312 x 2000. I'm adding some behaviors to the images in Motion (motion paths and shrink/grow).
My FCP project is setup as a DV NTSC 48kHz, 720 x 480, editing timebase=59.94, timecode Rate=same as editing timebase, compressor-DV/DVPRO-NTSC, quality 100%.
When I export to Quicktime the movies are very low quality--lots of noise and moire pattern etc.
How do I get the best qualtiy using still images? Is it my FPS setting, image pixel size, compressor setting? Also, do the movies need to be deinterlaced?
The preview in the FCP browser and canvas looks a little better but I do notice noise (moire patterns) along the sharp edges of the still images.
I've seen QT movies of these very same images (done by someone else who is no longer around) and they are much better quality.
Does anyone have an appropriate workflow for this type of project? The final movies are to be shown on a flatscreen monitor from a local computer, so the file sizes can be relatively large (300mb).
I can post an example of he movie files if that might help.
    Thanks.

David, your a genius!!! You posted your reply on my birthday, and I missed it until today!
Fotomagico is devastatingly easy to use and absolutely makes me want to cry at the amount of time I wasted creating photo slideshows in FCP!
I opened Fotomagico up and created a slideshow, one that I had already created in FCP and had take me FIVE HOURS to create... in TEN MINUTES!!!!!!!!! Aaaaaaaaah.
I couldn't believe it. I thought there had to be a catch or something. This was too easy the quality can't be there... but it was. It's amazing and I can't thank you enough for all the future hours you have saved for me.

  • FCP and After Effects Windows: best codec?

I still do a lot of FCP7 editing using Apple ProRes codec on my Mac. Since I recently acquired a very fast PC, I plan on using it for work on After Effects. I'll be moving renders from FCP7 to AE and vice-versa. I noticed AE on Windows lacks the ProRes codec.  I've tried rendering in AE using Lossless in both QT and AVI but when importing to FCP there's a very noticeable color difference...
What's my best course of action here?

pretty sure you can get the prores codecs for windows from apple

  • How to put AVCHD and AVI formats in a timeline using Adobe production suite?

I shot an event with two different types of cameras (AVCHD camera and tape camera with AVI output). I converted the video of avchd into 1080p first, then put it with the tape output together, the video was jittery. How can I put them together in a timeline to have the best video as possible?

The video was taken from capture card by using the adobe DV Format. I copied the settings of capturing bellow to give you more info of how I did it. I'm not sure if this the right way to do it.

  • .mp4 and .avi video thumbnails in finder view

Hi, Some of my .mp4 and .avi video files have a thumbnail in finder view and some don't... Does anyone know how I can solve this?

Maybe, but maybe not. I use DigitalMedia Converter to convert to DV-AVI Type II's (I'm only doing SD), and it has a Split function. However, I have never used that, so do not know how well it might work for your needs, if at all. I just do not know. I believe that Deskshare has a user forum, and that might be a good place to try, after you've looked down their FAQ's.
I hope that others will have a definitive answer for you, with iron-clad suggestions.

  • Exporting HD Sizes for Quicktime and AVI?

Okay, LOVE the new CS4, but have a problem.
For tech notes in case it means anything, I'm shooting with a JVC HD-110, editing M2T files. Everything in THAT respect works perfectly - NOW I even have an FS5 drive so it goes even better - dropping all capture time and processes. The Projects are all set up as HDV, 720p at 24p - basically, everything about the Project is set to HD.
When I choose Quicktime or AVI as the Export format, the only Preset options that come up are DV related. Meaning, SD... And when I have to manually type 1280x720 as the export size (upping the default from 720x480) it even reads "1,280" - not a straight "1280", get it?
The resulting render looks horrible - completely unusable - unless my goal is to simulate the old Fisher Pricer Pixel Camcorder ;-)
How do I Export from Premiere's Timeline to an HD format? Or can I download a set or HD Presets to put in the Export Settings (or something) folder for each codec?
Thank you for your time, and any thoughts-
    -Lew

Oh yeah - there's a whole huge list for WMV! MAN you have options there!
No, none of those options are (or seem) available for Quicktime and AVI.
I bounce files back and forth for clients (and myself) for FX work and edits (they prefer the Quicktime Animation codec at 100% - gotta admit, it's beautiful!), and would like to do final output to HD in the end for a project I'm working on right now.

  • Some JPG and AVI files imported from camera to iphoto, but not all

I just imported from camera to iPhoto using card reader and half the pics and a couple movies came over. The rest aren't recognized by my iMac, even though they say JPG and AVI and still run fine on camera. I installed Perian plugin a while back at the recommendation of one of you, which solved that problem and I just installed the recent update. I used time machine to restore old version, but that didn't work. I don't know if this is a Quicktime (v 7.4.1) issue or a problem with the flashcard. I tried opening via photoshop and iMovie. Photoshop CS3's message says "Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found." iMovie, when I try to drag movie into it says "The file could not be imported: ... Quicktime couldn't parse it: -2048". Hopefully one of you knows what is going on. Thanks!!!

Are you running a "referenced" or "managed" library?
    Give this a try:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Keynote / PP to DVD (via FCP and DVD SP)

This is going to sound weird, but I have been working on this for a while.
I know FCP and DVD SP pretty well. I have a Powerpoint presentation (170 MB or so), 2 hours long. The person who did the PP presentation is not that great a designer, but it's basically Text with some graphics / picts.
I exported all the slides (over 100 of them) as TIFFs (highest quality, 720 x480.
Imported them into FCP. I did a 2 hour audio recording in Logic and imported that into FCP and line up the audio.
    All looks good.
Until an export, I have tried all type of FCP tricks I know. Like setting the Compressor setting in FCP to a higher codec, like Animation, Apple ProRes 422.
The QT looks fine as a small window, but when you double the size or go Full Screen, it looks horrible.
What gives? It just seems like once you go to DVD (Standard Def 480 lines) it just looks like crap as a movie, on a TV or on an LCD.
In Keynote or PP, when you present, it seems both KN and PP have some technology that auto up rezzes the slides so it looks great fullscreen on a 23" ACD, or 30" ACD.
I may just save in Powerpoint as a "Powerpoint Show", with audio attached to each slide, this seems like the best bet to get the best resolution.
I am not sure this can be done as a movie and then put onto DVD, but perhaps it can be done HD with HD resolution.
Can one uprez the TIFFs to HD rez (1080) in Photoshop or some other plugin (i know we did this with SD clips a few years ago with a plugin from a company in canada).
Then do an HD project in FCP (Apple ProRes 422) and then use Compressor as H.264, that would have to look pretty good.
Of course it would only be file based, unless one burned to Blu Ray, but who the heck has Blu Ray players, still not that common.

Thanks for the no reply, no help, great.
I figured it out, stay away from FCP for this,
Use Powerpoint and Keynote 08, then use iSpring (Pro) (Windows, Parallels or BootCamp) to export PPT file (with mp3 audio) to a Flash (swf) file. Plays great in any web browser with Flash plugin, or Eltima or other Flash / SWF player

  • HDV to FCP and onto the web

    Hi there,
I have a Sony Z1 and film in HDV 1080i 50HTZ PAL setting, and edit usig final cut pro 5. I was wondering what the best way of exporting the footage for use on the web is. I have tried so many different methods and programs but it all looks rubbish or appears in 4:3 and not 16:9.
I would prefer to upload it to the web using flash as nearly every computer has this, but does anyone have any tips on the best program to use or way of exporting from FCP?
I have tried using macromedia flash 8 - but I dont understand how the video exporter works! I tried the flix software, but the video player controls are really rubbish. I also tried VX30 - but it kept crashing, and when it worked the video was in 4:3.
All I want is a video that I can put on the web using flash that looks good and has nice controls. It would be a bonus if it had bandwith detection too, so the quality could reflect the users bandwith.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Tom

What? Didn't you know Apple lives in a bubble? There is only Quicktime and AVI. <vbg> Welcome to the world of "fighting to get files that work on Windows or in Flash".
To export as 16:9 for the web, use QuickTime Conversion and click Options, then set the size to a size you like, such as 480x270 (a 16:9 ratio would be useful for this setting).
    Then export it.
Then use VisualHub or similar to convert it to Flash.
Then open the flash file in Flash, and follow the prompts, selecting the controls skin you want. Then Publish the Flash project with HTML.
Or... switch to Adobe Premiere, and simply export the movie as Flash.

  • FCP File Error: Wrong Type

A EXT HD w/ 1TB worth of FCP Projects and it's media died on me. (no, none of it was backed up, please save me the lecture!)
Anyway, we sent it to one of the Drive Recovery places and they were able to retrieve about 95% of the files.
When I got back the new drive w/ the rescued files It seemed like it was all there until I tried to open one of the .fcp files and encountered this:
    FCP File Error: Wrong Type
I checked the file's info to see if it was associated w/ FCP. It was...
I checked the Capture Scratch files and found that all of the Quicktimes did not have their ".mov" extensions. I added ".mov" after one of them and it opened successfully in the Quicktime Player. I tried moving this same file to FCP and encountered this:
    File Error: Unknown File
As an experiment I took the same quicktime (which BTW is an HDV 1080i60 Quicktime) and dropped it into Compressor. I converted it to the same setting (HDV 1080i60) After the conversion I was able to pop it into FCP normally.
So what do you guys think? Is there anyway I can get these .fcp files to open? Am I totally screwed?
    Thanks,
    -B

Yes, a .fcp extension means it's a FCP project file. I'm not dragging/importing .fcp's into FCP, just trying to open them normally w/ no luck. It's the QT's I've been dragging/importing into FCP.
I've tried a few Resource Editors to change the way the .fcp project files are handled/read w/ no luck
Well, at least my QT's are intact...

  • Getting Mysterious Wheel Spin (Hang) with FCP, and iChat after updates

I have been running Adobe final cut Studio Pro (FCP) and Adobe CS2 for a while without a hitch. Over the past 3 days I updated to the latest updates (6.0.3) FCP. No problems. BTW on all the updates, I downloaded the update then installed it. I then downloaded and installed the 10.5.2 update. All seemed OK. I then installed Adobe CS3 Web Standard upgrade. Discovered I was missing a serial number so I stopped the installation. All still seemed OK. This morning I decided to start over with Adobe CS3, so I took all the CS3 programs in the application folder, moved them to the trash and then emptied the trash. Almost immediately after I started getting very strange actions with the FCP suite. I would start soundtrack PRO, and export an xml file to FCP, FCP would present the splash screen and then hang.Cann't kill it nothing. I had to reboot the system. Then I would sometimes get the same problem just starting sound track PRO. Still puzzled, I started iChat. the first time it worked, but then the second time it hungs (wheel spin) trying to start up. Each time I have to reboot the system to clear it out. I thought maybe it was the Adobe CS3 programs I deleted. I ran the install and it won't re-install the applications because it reports the programs are installed, but in fact they are deleted. I am about to wipe the disk and start over, but that means loosing a couple of days reloading everything.
don't have a clue what to do. Anyone have any thoughts ideas???
    thanks

  • Font Compatibility between FCP and Adobe After Effects

    Hello.
I've got an issue with my fonts...
    I've got 4 places where I can put them (Library/Fonts ; System/Library/Fonts ; Users/Library/Fonts ; Network/Library/Fonts (a network Library I made working with a SAN)).
    I've got at least 4 kind of fonts (DFONT:Datafork TrueType font ; FFIL:Font Suitcase ; OTF:OpenType font ; TTF:Windows TrueType font).
I'm working with networked home directories.
My question is : What I have got to use for my fonts been recognised In both Final Cut Pro and After Effects (Adobe software in general).
With all of my 4 folders I've got about 100 fonts. In FCP an AFX I can see about 35 fonts and only 27 in common. This 27 are in differents folder and are different type.
    I'm getting mad.
    Help me

Of course I should, but the shared Library is made for "I put a font in one place and it can be used by anyone of my network".
It doesn't matter, I found the answer myself. The TTF one works, but the name isn't the same : In Apple world, the font got the font's file's name, in Adobe's world, the font got the font's family's name + font's style (like bold) (and both can't be change...)
    Thx
    Bye

  • Problems with FCP and Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT video card

Not sure if this should be in the MacBook Pro forum or this one...
I am having trouble with the GeForce 8600M GT video card while editing in final cut pro (and after effects). I have talked with numerous people at applecare, but they say that they are unaware of issues regarding the video card.
The problem: It's almost like the card is unable to keep up with professional video applications. Whenever there is movement in the video I'm editing, I get lines across the screen. Not sure to how better to explain it than to say it looks like the video card is having a tough time refreshing. (I can take the same video to a much older power book, and it plays perfectly, so its not the source file.)
At first I thought it was an FCP issue, but I just started using after effects, and I'm having the same problem in there. If I edit in after effects, when I play it back (in after effects), I get the lines. I can then export the project to a quicktime file. The quicktime file plays perfectly (no lines) when not involved with a professional application. Then if I import the same quicktime file into FCP and play it back in FCP, the lines happen again.
Is anyone esle having this problem? Any thoughts? Any solutions?
    Thanks!
    Michael

I had searched the macbook pro forum, but not this one. It seems that the "screen tearing" issue has been talked about a lot, so I apologize for the repetitive nature of the post. I will say that I am fairly shocked that given how many people have clearly called applecare, no one there seems to have a clue that there is a problem with this video card. I have talked with at least 4 different people in the FCP specialty group, and not one had any clue what I was talking about... 3 of the 4 were fairly insistent that it was a video source issue on my side.
