FCP and iMac Intel?

Hi,
I've recently been greenlighted to purchase an iMac and FCP for a video project. I've heard that FCP does not run on iMacs with the Intel processor as of yet. Is this true? If so, when will FCP be available to run on the Intel Macs? I need to make my purchase the first of March. Should I stick with the Power PC or go with the new Intel Mac?
Thanks!
Roy

Often a quick search will turn up your answer.
Since you need to make your purchase the first of March, and the Universal version is slated to be available "before the end of March 2006", you'd need to find out from Apple whether they'd ship the Universal version or whether you'd have to go through the crossgrade process if you ordered Final Cut Studio along with your Mac on the first of March.
If they won't ship the Universal version, and you can't afford to wait until near the end of March to get Final Cut up and running on it, that answers your PowerPC vs. Intel question.
Edit: also, you aren't going to be able to purchase FCP by itself. You need to buy Final Cut Studio. FCP is no longer sold separately.
Edit 2: if you look at Final Cut Studio in the Apple Store online, it definitely isn't the Universal version as they specifically say "Buy Final Cut Studio today for your PowerPC-based Mac and you will be eligible to purchase the Universal version, which will run on both Intel- and PowerPC-based Macs, for $49 through our crossgrade program." Whether that will be different on March 1st or not... who knows.

  • System Image for G5 (PPC) and iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo)

    hello,
I would like to know if there is a way to create a common system image Mac OS X 10.4.10 that I can "deploy" in out two mac labs. One with G5 (PPC-based machines) and the other with iMac (Intel-based machines).
If yes, how can I do that ? with a script ?
I tried to boot a G5 with image made on IMac and it didn't boot...
    Anybody can help me ?
Thanks a lot for your cooperation,

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
As they are not comparable versions of Mac OS X, a dual boot configuration would be needed. One with a GUID (for Intel) formatting, and one with Apple Partition Map (for PowerPC). This Mac OS X hints page explains how to make a dual boot configuration:

  • External Drive Recommendations for iMovie '09 and iMac Intel Core Duo

I just got a new iMac Intel Core Duo, and loading up on 4 gig of Ram. Going to get an external drive to house video footage, and wondering if this model might be ok. I understand firewire is usually better than usb drives, but am looking at one that is USB 2.0 with of speeds up to 480 Mbps and transfer rates up to 1.5 Gbps. Claims it's almost twice as fast as FireWire 800.
Would this work well for iMovie, editing HD footage?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

LOVE this Fantom drive. Very quiet and an amazing price for 1TB with all interfaces.

  • Exchanging files between eMac and iMac Intel ( GUID Scheme hard drive bug )

    Hi,
I have to exchange big file and folder regularly between 2 Mac ( Home and work ), before it was easy because both computer are eMac ( 700 mhz combo drive OS X 10.3.9 ) I used my firewire backup drive to transferred files.
Now I change my home computer for a new iMac intel, naturally I had to format my firewire backup drive to GUID scheme to be able to boot with, but now when I connect this drive to the eMac it refuse to mount; when I connect it to the eMac a window appeared asking to format the drive, when I check with Disk Utility the application see the drive but refused to mount it.
Is there a hack to force the eMac to read and write to a GUID scheme drive?
    Cheers,
    Luc

Macs running an OS earlier than 10.4.x can't recognize the GUID partition table. The easiest fix is to update the eMac to run OS X 10.4.8
There are tips online for formatting an external drive to be bootable for both Intel and PPC Macs (e.g. this link) but it appears those tips still require the PPC Mac to be running 10.4.x

  • I was told that.. (EZdrummer and iMac-intel)

    hi folks,
i am waiting (as many of you guys out there) for the "perennial quest" upgrade. (EZdrummer does not support intel on iMac).
NOW, i was told that an upgrade is now available, but just for pro tools..
do you know if it is correct?
i mean, i was told that i can yes run EZdrummer on an intel based mac but only if runnung with pro tools?
    does this make sense?
    can you bust this myth?
    ..or is it true?
i know, i know.. there is a forum just for EZdrummer, but it's kind of bleah to me and i like this way better -to be honest-
so, come on masters and supreme living beings and illuminate me.
    cheerz,

EZD is now available in RTAS for ProTools 7.0+
    http://www.toontrack.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=23739&mpage=1&key=RTAS&#23739
EZD is not yet available for Intel Macs, but will be 'soon.' Quoting from one of the Toontrack team:
It's in our interest to get it out as soon as possible but we will not rush it out the door. Expect Superior RTAS, EZdrummer RTAS, EZdrummer UB and Superior UB, in that order.
The first two are done: EZD UB is next.

  • The Sims 2 Expansion Packs and iMac Intels

    Hi everyone.
I have The Sims 2, University, Pets and Open for Business and I have a question. I have downloaded the patches from Aspyr so I'm no longer getting the dreaded PowerPC question at the beginning... however, when I played the Sims on my PC, I think that it always used the original Sims disc to play, not the expansion discs. Does anyone know why my Mac is asking me to put in the University disc when I assume it should be asking me to put in the original Sims 2 disc? I thought that the expansions were just upgrades and that the game always required the original disc to be in the drive to play? Can anyone advise on this? How does it work if I want to swap between Pets and Open for Business for example? Do I have to have each disc in to play? Any help appreciated.
    Thanks
    Tracy

First off, is it osx app or just windows. Second, if it is osx is it Universal binary or just ppc, or just intel. If it is just intel, you are fine. If it is ppc, then i would recommend picking up a windows os, and installing it in bootcamp. I have been running a few games in bootcamp and they all run great. I do not have the Santa Rosa MBP, i have the older 2.33 2gb ram, but this laptop runs multiple games at full graphics mode. You shouldnt have any problems running or installing the game.

  • Mountain lion and imac intel core duo 2

    hello
i have an imac 8,1 intel core duo 2 -2,66gz with IOS 10.5.8 can i install Mountain Lion?
    thank you
    BJ

System requirements can be found here:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/
You will first need to get your system to Mac OS X 10.6 so you have access to the Mac App Store, the only place from which Mountain Lion is available. The 10.6 installer disk can be purchased from the online Apple Store.
    Regards.

  • Logic Express 7 and imac Intel Core Duo

I recently bought both items mentioned above but havent had the time to install LE7. Should I bother? I read through some posts and it seems they are incompatible.. I dont live in the USA so the send in CD for an upgrade option may be difficult

    Hi, djkhont!
    According to the Apple website...
    http://www.apple.com/logicexpress/
...version 7.2 is a universal binary. If you only have LE7.0, then you're likely to run into trouble. Audio and MIDI are low-level functions that like to talk pretty directly to hardware, so you should expect troubles if you're not running your sequencer in native mode.
Can't your local Apple rep get a copy of the 7.2 upgrade for you? I've looked at the reseller list for Venezuela, and it seems that one of them might be able to give you a hand. Here in Singapore, I got my 7.1 upgrade from a local shop that ordered it from Apple -- with only a modest markup. You only need the 7.2 upgrade, which is relatively inexpensive.
    Good luck!!

  • IMac Intel FCP and digital cinema preview

i've just recently upgraded from a g4 powerbook to an intel iMac 20" and curently running 10.4.7 and FCP 5.01. On the powerbook i was running FCP 4.5 and using a TV monitor as a 2nd monitor via the digital cinema preview. Yesterday i bought the mini-dvi to video adapter and plugged in the TV and am unable to get a preview through the TV. I get the extended desktop and even Shake recognises it as a monitor. Im thinking maybe its a Universal thing, my crossgrade arrives next week, or more disturbing perhaps the video card which is the NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT which i cant see on the FCP recomended page??
    anyone have any ideas??
    thanks in advace

    imac intel 24"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

hey everyone who is interested, finally discovered after some research that FCP digital cinema PREVIEW is ONLY supported in AGP cards (such as that exist in powerbooks etc) and does not support the PCI range. So i guess it is means running it through the camera or a canopus type bridge (sound of cash disappearing) thanks mac! You had a great, simple and elegant solution then just threw it away.

  • New mac mini and imac vs powermac G5 running FCP studio

I want to compare running the FCP suite on the new max minis and imacs that came out today vs what I am currently using:
Currently I am running FCP Studio on a Powermac G5 dual 2GHz with one gig of ram. I believe the frontside bus is 1GHz. I believe the stock video card isan ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (AGP 8X Pro) video card with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM.
With this being said, is it safe to assume that the new entry level mac mini would surpass my G5 in terms of performnce in both video (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with128MB or 256MB of shared DDR3) memory processing (intel core2 duo 2GHz)?
If not would the two low end Imacs (using NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of shared DDR3 memory) and processing power handle FCP studio better than my current powermac G5 setup listed above?
I am wondering because I spoke to a apple sales person who transfered me to a system engineer that said I'd have a slow time rendering video on FCP with the mac minis as well as the 2 low end imacs. This may be but Im wondering if it is still better than what I am using
I appreciate your opinions, but please only answer if you really know,
    Thanks!

For FCP/FCS I would not save on anything but will get the max what my budget allow. You will be always doing more and the workflow in FCS will entice you to open almost all apps in FCS concurrently to make use of the advanced features. I think that the new iMac are powerful enough to handle FCS, but once again, the extra dollars will save you alot of pain. FCS is a pro app and is not to be underestimated. Good luck.

  • Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD and Soundtrack Pro 1.0.2 and new Intel iMac

I have the both FCP and Soundtrack Pro versions listed above. I'm thinking about picking up a new Intel iMac. Will I have to pay $199 or $99 to upgrade to FCP Studio. I just purchased Soundtrack Pro recently, if I could upgrade for just $99 and get Shake and iDVD that would be a deal...probably still a deal for $199.
I also use CS2, seems Adobe is a little confusing to me. Will I have to pay to get CS2 native for the Intel iMac? Any idea on cost and timeliness.
Separately, how will FCP run on a 20" Intel iMac once upgraded to Universal version, which I'll have to do, since it won't run under Rosetta? I currently only do Mini DV but should I plan on getting the extra video memory now, planning on eventually going into the HD video realm?
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and comments...thinking about getting the Intel iMac via CompUSA with their interest free deals tomorrow.

Powebook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Happy with Mac...don't want to lose the ease!

well, same situation here, I was about to order a Macbook Pro but then decided to saty with our beloved G platform. the reason is that it will take some time for our Pro Apps to become fully /natively compatible with Intel and I just can't wait that much.
    as for your question about using an iMac with FCP, the answer would be a;
"Yes" if you're going to work with DV only footage (using an external HD for your captured media is a must). and a
"No" if you plan to work with HD material in the future. there you've got no choice but a PowerMac G5 with a fast Graphic Card and a special SD/HD card or box to capture the footage.
résumé: if you're a serious FCP user, go for something expandible, go for a Powermac.

  • IMac intel core, 10.6.8 - isn't mounting my partioned iomega drive. How do i get it to mount and stay mounted?

iMac intel core, 10.6.8 - isn't mounting my partitioned iomega drive. It was mounting one of the partitions, but not the other one for a while. Then they both stopped showing up. I can not select the drive in Time Machine. I verified and repaired the iMac hard drive with Disk Utility. Then tried to verify and repair iomega drive in Disk Utility. It appears briefly but then disappears. One partition might be bad, what do i do? Then name of the partition changed to something like disk1:3 when it was called MAC.  I want to see what's on it and ideally continue to use it as our backup in Time Machine. How do I get it to mount and stay mounted?

The usage figure reported by the activity monitor is likely to include only the core progam, the APIs that are being called and space for variables. FCP moves huge amounts of data around the system but, in general, I would imagine these are handled by the OS so would not (except maybe momentarily) be included in the acitivity monitor total.
If you have very little memory and it "runs out" so to speak, the OS will start swapping files on and off the disc which will slow the system down to a crawl if you have a standard hard drive. So with 16GB you have loads of room for the data transfers to take place quickly and efficiently. So, I would say you had not wasted your money! A very wise investment.
