FCP archive to LTO tape Library

We currently have a 70TB Xsan and about 25000 hours of content on other tapes (1", Digibeta, Betacam, etc) that we need to archive off to a more stable and space saving format. We don't want to backup the data as much as archive it to get it off the Xsan.
Keeping the content on spinning disk is not feasible due to cost and size.
We've been looking at tape libraries from StorageTek(SL8500), Quantum(Scalar i2000) and SpectraLogic(T950) and wonder if anyone has had any experience attaching one of these to an Xsan.
The other half of the question is what software to use to actually do the archive. We're of course waiting to see what Final Cut Server brings and know that we will need some sort of data life cycle management software.
Any suggestions as to what works and we we should be considering?

matt,
I'm a bit confused. This material is already on videotape, so why do you want to archive it to another computer tape format? The videotape is your best bet for long term archiving. You mention "stable and space saving"... frankly, those videotape formats are probably as stable and compact as anything else you may transfer them to. The problem with the other computer based tape back ups is that they will archive a digital format only, so you're going to have to digitze all of your library first, then archive. This is a tremendous amount of time and effort. (25,000 hours will take you over a year to digitize everything using a single stream) You've already got it on tape, so why go through the trouble of an interim step just to put it on a different tape format. We're still accessing and playing beta and digibeta format tapes from 15 years ago. That format has proven to work for at least that time period.
I don't think that final cut server is going to help you in this situation.
All of the three tape libraries that you mention are viable back up solutions, but I don't think they're the right choice for your situation.

  • Is it possible to use LTO tape library as an Archive Device

    Is it possible to use LTO tape library as an Archive Device in Final Cut Server System?
    Does it requires any additional hardware/software? Is there any recommendations available?

    HI Daro, you might want to look at TolisGRoup's impending BRU "Producers edition" http://www.tolisgroup.com/products/macosx/pe/.
    I believe they are looking to have these interfaces to some of the  pro-apps. [Will stand corrected].
    Whatever the archiver.app, it needs to know where the objects start and end on the data tape volume (e.g Ultrium LTO4]. THis is simply done by knowing the BLOCKID ofthe first block of the file(s) that have been archivied on the tape (this was retrieved when the ARCHVE operation was done via RED BLKID cmd). This is simplest form. That way the software can "+LOCATE BLOCK scsi tape cmd+" to that spot on that tape volume using HIGH SPEED SEARCH and read in what it needs.
    Some rather spiffy .apps like SGL's FLASHNET for OSX and others (DIVARCHIVE on windows) will resolve a TCR to a location DATA TAPE volume based on the known codec or in SGL's case, the interface through it's MXF archive implementation. This could be very hand for large high bitrate objects. .
    I am waiting for this myself. It is currently in BETA.

  • Tape Library Concern - Eject & Reinsertion after each backup

    Here is what I am currently using.
    System overview:
    -HP Proliant DL380p Gen 8
    -HP D2600 2TB 3G SATA LFF - 24TB Storageworks array
    -Quantum Scalar i40
    (2) HP LTO-5 tape heads
    (25) Licensed slots
     Tape library is configured as one partition
    Windows 2012 R2 - fully patched
    DPM 2012 R2 Data Center Edition with 7/2014 Update Rollup 3
     I have used DPM for about 6 years since 2007 version but I have always used stand alone LTO-3 & LTO-5 tape drives.  I
    have used tape libraries before that time but with a different product.
    Here is the scenario I am seeing.  Any tapes jobs that are scheduled at the same time will
    pull a tape into each tape drive and backups are performed.  All is working normal from that perspective.  The problem I see is that after each backup is completed the tape is removed from the drive, placed back in the slot, removed again from the
    slot and then re-inserted back into the drive to continue with the next backup job that was scheduled at the same time as the previous one.
    This seems highly inefficient and time consuming not to mention a lot of extra wear & tear
    on the library & tapes.  Is this behavior normal? If so, can it be changed?  or is it is bug?
    I would expect the tape to remain in the tape drive until all backups are completed assuming they
    had available capacity and were not off-site ready.  It appears if multiple servers are in the same protection group the tape is not removed between these backups.  The issue appears to be when the next separate protection group is backed up.
    I’d even be up to manually moving the tape and leaving it in the tape in drive but I don’t see
    that kind of library control with DPM.
    I saw another thread from August where someone mentioned seeing this behavior when doing verifies
    on their backups.
    Thoughts?  PSS call?
    Thanks!

    I'm seeing that if a protection group consisting of hundreds of small SQL databases is configured for short term disk and long term tape, and configured to use 2 drives, that after EACH DATABASE the tape is rewound and re-slotted, only to be re-inserted
    into the drive and fast forwarded to the end for the next database to be written.
    If you've got hundreds of databases (many small, like msdn, model, etc) this can push the time out to 3 minutes plus per database taped, even for a 5MB database.
    My current workaround is to configure the protection group to only allow the use of a single drive.
    Doing so seems to reduce the time per database from 5 minutes down to 30 seconds, presumably just REW and FF tape movement.
    Even though the time is reduced, I'm still disappointed the progress between databases doesn't continuously stream.  I mean 100 small 5MB databases should only take 7 seconds, if streaming at 70MB/s to tape.  Instead it's 30 seconds per 5MB database.
    :(

  • Organizing footage tape library automatically??? Program or Shareware???

    I have shot 200-300 mini-DV tapes full of footage over the years. I built a wall rack to hold all of my tapes. I want to go through all of them and organize the tapes and footage notes. Is there a program I can download or buy that would allow me to pop tape number 001 in the deck conected to my Mac and say take a frame grab every 30 or 60 seconds from beginning to end and then organize into a printable proof sheet so I can see at a glance what is on every one of my tapes. Maybe put all of the sheets into a thick notebook on my edit desk. Maybe have a time code stamp next to each thumbnail pic. I have went though some of the tapes and just watched the tapes and logged by hand some of the highlights of each tape along with time code notes, date shot, time shot, location etc. I feel that having a proof sheet with sample frames of video would be more user friendly for me. Any one have any info on programs or shareware for this. Please tell me how "you" organize your tape library.
    Thanks in advance for any ideas on this!!!

    Please let us know how you make out on this project. I'm curious because, even in a corporate environment, we can't make any video database function worth diddle because of the incredible time/effort requirements. Assuming not all 300 tapes are full, that's still about 200 hours worth of material. Just viewing it and attempting to log it will take 5, 40-hour weeks of doing nothing but sitting in front of your monitors, loading tapes and keystroking. And that just gets the logs built. it doesn't pull in the video.
    I can tell you one thing for certain. The single most important part about digital asset management is designing the catalog before you start trying to fill it up. And I can also tell that, in dozens of case studies I've seen, this step is rarely done. It is only performed by experienced database suers and those who have been trained in library arts.
    Digital asset management is a huge hole into which you can pour time and money and end up with nothing of value.

    For testing and learning purposes, I have installed OSB 10.3 and the virtual tape management system mhvtl (http://mhvtl-linux-virtual-tape-library-community-forums.966029.n3.nabble.com/MHVTL-Linux-Virtual-Tape-Library-Getting-Started-td1663811.html). It seems to work quite well apart from one serious shortcoming. If a virtual tape which is already labeled and used as part of a media family is unmounted from the drive, a subsequent re-mount leads to a relabel of the volume whereupon all pieces and any reference to the volume are lost. If the virtual tape is left in the drive, there is no issue - new backups are appended to the end of the volume as one would expect.
    Somewhat perversely, when I mount a used tape, OSB correctly identifies it. As soon as I start writing to it though, the volume is re-labeled.
    I can overcome the issue by using obtar -z to advance the tape to the end of the volume.

  • New SCDPM 2012 Deployment Scenario and tape Library Sharing.

    Folks
    I am having one SCDPM 2012 SP1 on Server 2008 R2 with one tape library. I am going to build another second DPM on Server 2012 and I want to share the same library which is on first DPM.
    Before I build second DPM server I want to make some doubts clear so it does't create issues later.
    Both DPM will be physical.
    I am reading technet link to share tape ibrary : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh758124.aspx
    And My queries are:
    1) The tape library must be in a storage area network (SAN) environment.
     >The tape Hewlett Packard LTO Ultrium-5 drive I have is attched to first DPM server through SCSI array.Dont know if it is SAN supported.
    2) We recommend that the system configuration of the library server computer and all library client computers be as similar as possible, and that you do not configure any protection groups on the library server.
       >As I have attached library to my first DPM server which is having 22 Protection groups with 562 datasources. Can it be promoted as a Library server? If not then what is solution for this.
    3)All DPM servers using a shared library must use a similar SQL Server setup for hosting DPM databases.You cannot have some DPM servers using local instance and others using a remote instance.
       >My first DPM is hosting its Database on its own (local) So should I setup SQL on second DPM localy?
    4)SQL accounts should be DOMAIN accounts? On the technet link it is showing SQL failover cluster, where does it require? As image showing it is required between library clients but I will have one library server and one library client, will I needed SQL CLuster?
    This was related to Tape, now other queries I have if second DPM and tape sharing deployed successfully.
    1) First DPM has reached LDM records occupancy 79% and I have identified non-colocated datasources/Protection groups which are occupying larger amount of LDM. I will move/recreate these protected groups on 2nd DPM with COLOCATION so they cant use much LDMs.
       a)Should I stop protection on 1st DPM and add these protection groups on 2nd DPM. Will it allow me to add since Inactive replica there would be on 1st DPM for 30days
       b) Or should I Migrate these PGs?
       c) What is best practice for this?

    Figured it out.  Since I'm on a preconfigured RDS server, the RDS Session Host role is already installed.  So technically Session-based desktop deployment is already set up.  It's the difference between the session host role and the Virtualization
    Host roles...slightly confusing when you walk into the middle of the deployment.
    It would also explain my second part of the question since the session host role is installed....

  • DPM 2010 How to use autoloader tape library

    Dear Team
    Hello All,
    We have implemented the DPM 2010 successfully in our organization. But while creating the protection group it shows the tape library name but not the individual tapes.
    So, our requirement is as below.
    We want to create the daily backup in one tape. and weekly backup in another tape.
    How we can select the specific tape Slot in library for different backup?
    An early response will be highly appreciated.

    [email protected]

    Hi,
    DPM has a flat tape handling model and does not provide the direct ability to assign certain tapes or slots to specific backup jobs.   Depending on the retention period of the two goals, DPM should use separate tapes by default.  You have
    some control by tweaking the TapeWritePeriodRatio and ExpiryToleranceRange settings.
    See the following resources for more information on the above parameters:

    When restoreing a tape from Overland tape library using baracuda to STK 5320 maped volume we are getting the following log on the STK 5320.
    We have checked the permission and access status for the spdtest the are in full permission and read/write resp.

    slot 11-16 for full system backup
    slot 17 - 20 reserve ( this tape only use for full system backup before perform any application upgrade patches , )
    daily backup mon - fri ( 2 week ) ( no backup on saturday and sunday ) , server application offline
    full system backup friday ( 1 , 14 on calendar ) every 2 week perform full system backup after daily backup completed
    for upgrade application ,
    perform full system backup after daily backup , then release the server to application team to perform upgrading .

    We are planning to purchase a tape library system for backing up the data on our cluster. I was wondering if any one ever used the Sun L1000 Tape library system with NetBackup. How do you like the L1000 and NetBackup? Is the L1000 tape library reliable? What kind of throughput do you get? We have a 2-node cluster E5500/E4500. I am planning to connect the tape library to an E250 and use it as the backup server.
    Thank you in advance.

    hi sjen,
    it depends on the size of you databases and filesystems. the sun 250 should be ok, if you have enough memory. sometimes the network-interface (dfx) is a bottleneck.

  • Disaster Recovery from tape library!

    Hi,
    I am using oracle 10g and Backup Exec 12 as the media management software. How do i perform the disaster recovery. My entire scenario is like this:
    Server A has the DB (Database).
    Configured Backup Exec with RMAN and took full DB backup along with autobackup of controlfile to the tape.
    Server A crashes and is unusable.
    Installs Oracle on server B and needs to restore the DB on this new server.
    I know the DBID of the DB but how to configure RMAN to work with Backup Exec, so that I can restore the db from the tape library?
    When you configure the RMAN integration with Backup Exec, it finds the database running on the server and will perform the integration. But in my case, since the database does not exist, how will the Backup Exec agent configure the integration?
    How do we go about the restoration to Server B in this case?
    Thanks!

    Hi!
    I am still not able to restore the db. The scenario is like:
    Took a full database backup to tape from server A with controlfile autoconfig
    Trying to restore the db on server B. The following is the script used to restore.
    connect target /
    set dbid=152417844;
    startup nomount;
    run
    +{+
    allocate channel sbt1 type 'sbt_tape';
    SEND 'BSA_SERVICE_HOST=ipaddress,NBBSA_TOTAL_STREAMS=1';
    set controlfile autobackup format for device type 'sbt_tape' to 'cf_%F';
    restore spfile from autobackup;
    restore controlfile from autobackup;
    alter database mount;
    restore database;
    recover database;
    release channel sbt1;
    +}+
    alter database open resetlogs;
    When i try to restore, the output is:
    channel sbt1: looking for autobackup on day: 20090624
    channel sbt1: looking for autobackup on day: 20090623
    channel sbt1: looking for autobackup on day: 20090622

  • Backup Oracle VMs using a direct attached tape library

    Hello all,
    I'm in the process of getting a specification for a new Oracle VM host server which will run OEL VMs and host Oracle databases (10g and others), currently we're looking at getting an HP DL580 and a MSL6000 tape library using SAS connectors.
    Regarding backups, I understand that Oracle VM Server doesn't have a built in mechanism for backups so would need to use a backup method from within the virtual machines.
    Is it possible, and advisable, to use a tape library directly attached to the host server and use an OEL VM running Symantec Netbackup which will then backup the other VMs, if so, are there any issues or gotchas I should be aware of?
    If it is possible to do this, do I connect the tape library to the VM by editing the VM config file and add the tape library devices as 'phy:/dev/xxx'
    Thanks in advance,
    Martin.

    NDMP is for backing up NAS platforms.
    Does your backup software support "LAN-Free" backup ? Typically enterprise backup software like Netbackup, TSM, Networker require a special license/agent that gets loaded on server where you are going to implement LAN-Free backups. Without that software/license servers will be fighting for tape resources and it will be a mess (if it works at all). Also you want to use dedicated HBA or port on dual HBA for tape traffic, do not mix tape and disk traffic on the same HBA/port. In big shops people configure dedicated "tape" VSANs but that would be an overkill for your current environment.
