Fcp audio normalization

I recorded a dress rehearsal of the Music Man, a local production. Since I was closer to the orchestra than to the actors (who all wore mics connected to the House speakers), the audio required a lot of tweaking, using keyframes in the Viewer. I worked with eight different clips in this way. Now, at the end of the project, should I normalize the audio? And, if so, should I do it clip by clip, or is there a way to normalize all the clips at once? Thanks for your help.

Jerry, You asked me to get back to you about my normalization question in fcp. So, after doing a **** of a lot of audio adjustments manually, using keyframes, I made a new Sequence, copied the original and normalized the whole track (which included a lot of Timeline edits). I then exported both Sequences and made a DVD of each one in DVD Studio Pro. When we listened to each DVD on my home entertainment system, the normalized track sounded better. In a couple of places, I had brought up the gain on quiet segments of on-stage conversation using keyframes. In one case I brought it up from 0db to 11db. And still, on the non-normalized version, the conversation was too quiet. In the normaized version, this conversation was definitely louder, without clipping, and it fit better with the loud orchestra segment that surrounded it.
Thanks for asking,
Robert

  • Capturing VHS through DV cam to FCP - Audio clipping!!

    Hey all,
I'm capturing a VHS through my DV cam (it has analogue to digital version) and when it comes into FCP the audio is clipping (going above 0db)
Is there anyway to lower the input volume?
    Thankyou
    Paul

The camera doesn't let you change the input volume
    What I did was:
Made the VIDEO ONLY go from VCR > DV CAM > MAC
But made the audio go to VCR > PC LINE IN > PC LINE OUT > DV CAM > MAC
When the audio came through my PC - I lowered the LINE IN volume so on the FCP audio level meters the audio peaked at -6dbs.
    Not a bad idea hey
Lucky I had all the cables and connectors laying around.

  • FCP audio

I'm not getting FCP audio (with or w/o headphones) through my Mac, whether through sequence, canvas or viewer. It is showing up on the FCP audio meter, as well as on the meter of my VTR. If I plug headphones into my VTR, I can hear it there. It's only FCP, as audio from Quicktime, I-tunes and websites is fine. I do get an error tone if I try do do something not allowed on FCP. I've gone through my Apple and FCP preferences and settings, but haven't found a way to correct it. It happened suddenly, and I'm sure there's an easy fix, I just haven't found it.

Thanks. It was on "Audio Follows Video," when it should have been "Built-In Audio." It might have switched when I imported some decoded video from a DVD using MPEG Streamclip software. Not sure why it would do that, but at least I know what to look for. Thanks again.

  • Audio normalization

I forget if I normalized the audio in a fcp sequence. Is there a way to tell if I have? Is there a problem with normalizing the same audio track twice?
Also, if I normalize the audio in a sequence from which I've made a nested sequence, is the audio in the nested sequence automatically normalized as well?
    Thanks,
    Robert

When you use this feature, it analyzes the audio peaks in your media, and attenuates to your desired peak level by applying the Gain filter. Check the clips in the viewer to see if the gain filter shows up in the filters tab. If you have applied it to the nest, you might need to open the nested sequence into the viewer, or bring up the remove attributes window to check for the presence of the gain filter.

  • APPLE vs. FCP audio filters

I have a basic question. I'm trying to do some documentation on the various audio filters built into FCP, and you've got the "APPLE" folder and the "Final Cut Pro" folder.
I'm not asking for an explanation of each filter, as theres lots of documentation on line and from various sources, and I also know these filters are not on par with SOUNDTRACK PRO for doing any real audio fixing, but I have one simple question I'm just trying to get the answer to, so I can in turn explain it to others...
Why are there two sets of filters, APPLE and FCP? I can guess that FCP created those filters in their folder, but, then what are the APPLE filters...why are they seperated out?
    Any input would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Audio Normalization Question

Often I include several different AIFF form songs as soundtracks in my videos. Usually, I have to manually adjust the sound level of each song so that they all play at about the same level - at least to my ear.
I suspect FCE can help me with this.
Have looked at Modify > Audio > Apply Normalization Gain but that never quite seems to produce satisfactory results.
    1. Should this be doing the job, and perhaps I am using it incorrectly?
    2. Any other ways to do this?
    Thanks.

    Rex,
Ian is exactly right about what normalization does; that's not the tool you want. The magic bullet you'd be looking for is a dynamics processor like a compressor/limiter. FCE has one of these you can apply. It's a tough tool to master though. It's an art, as was said earlier.
Play around with the ratio set fairly low, which is the amount of compression; the *attack time* affects how quickly it reduces the gain when a transient hits. The *release time* affects how quickly it lets the gain back up after peaks; if the ratio and the release time are set too high it may give a pumping sound that's not natural.
You'll really have to use your ears and play the audio back a lot. (You may have to render the audio or do an audio mixdown, depending on the audio you have?)
Alternatively, you could use keyframes on the audio clip overlays to reduce peaks and boost the softer material, but it's quite tedious unless if you have stereo tracks and other compositing going on.

  • Audio crackling killing FCP audio but not in stand alone QT player

I have a file I recorded in IShowU.
When I load it into final cut every once in a while I get a large crack and pop from the audio that kills my speakers requiring a reboot. If I play it through headphones it still cracks but it doesn't kill the audio.
If I play that EXACT same file in Quicktime stand alone player it plays perfectly. However, if I export the file from Final Cut and try to play it in Quicktime it has the same pops as it does in Final Cut.
    Any ideas?
    This is FCP 6.0.6

Did you ever solve this problem? I'm having the same issue with some audio in a FCP project. It was fine last night, but when I hopped on my machine this morning to work on it, I played the project and now have a segment of audio where it just gives a large pop/crackle and kills the speakers. If I have my headphones in, it keeps playing and there is the loudest static you've ever heard. The weird part is there is other segments of audio from the same clip in other parts of the video and they're fine. Additionally, when previewing the segment that crackles in the viewer window, there aren't any problems. It only happens in the timeline.

  • FCP Audio is Quiet when exported to iphone or used with DVD Pro

I recorded a voice over with an external mic through a pre-amp into STP, boosted the db level of the recording in STP with the master gain on a channel EQ effect and exported it out as an AIFF file. I imported the AIFF into FCP, put it under video and adjusted the audio levels so the peak db is between -12 and -6 - everything sounds great from the canvas. I then exported the entire video to m4v to be played on an iphone and .mov (through QT not Compressor) to be burned with DVD Pro.
The audio on the DVD works fine in my mac computer and even works fine via blue tooth to my car stereo (using my iphone), but the audio is either quiet or slightly distorted (sometimes sounds like it's underwater) when played in a regular console DVD player or played on my iphone's speakers.
Here is what I have done so far - the STP audio is 48 hz 24 bit and I originally had my FCP sequence settings at 16 bit. I switched this to 24 bit midstream in FCP - is this an issue? Otherwise - I have tried a bunch of stuff, e.g. power line hum is negative in STP and there is very little underlying noise in the original recording based on analyzing with the Noise Reduction in STP.
Has anyone dealt with this issue or aware of a db/audio compatibility problem between STP and FCP or an export problem with FCP in this situation? Please let me know if anyone has any information or solutions. Thank you.

My export out of STP is 6 tracks - including a submix and a master - but I don't even use those (I'm not a seasoned user on STP - I basically exported them by mistake). I end up deleting 4 tracks (the submix and blank master) and keeping the stereo channel that I directly recorded.
However, by way of background, I had this same issue using a Garageband AIF file. It was too quiet and garbled upon export from FCP as well. That is why I switched to STP to use its better EQ/gain boosters. Please advise with any thoughts. Thanks.

  • FCP Audio Clips in Soundtrack Pro - Marking the Start & End Points

When I double click on an audio clip that I've sent from FCP into Soundtrack Pro I seem to open up the entire media file.
How do I lock off or at least mark the clip start & end?
I don't see any markers that tell me which part of the clip is actually used in the imported FCP sequence.
I only want to make (non-destructive) changes to the clip.
I don't want to alter the original media file.
And I just want to work on the part that's used in the FCP sequence.
It makes sense that there's a way to show the start & end points of the clip but I'm just not seeing it.

I am a bit of a newb here, so pardon if my explanation is a little unpolished, but I have been working on some of my projects like you are and this is what i figured out. I select my sequence in FCP and send to stp as a multitrack project. The whole audio timeline shows up just as it looks in fcp, and the video track shows as one large clip that is made up of all my cuts put together. Now, my audio tracks are all on one line, and i can see all the clips with their cuts on the sequence. I click the first one and open it up to work on in the waveform editor. At that point i see the entire audio clip, including the part before and after my cut that i am using in my sequence, but i also see, up near the playhead, gray markers that show the actual part of the clip i am using in my edit. It is easest to hit shift-z to look at the entire clip on screen, and then find the grey markers. Also, if you play audio before the in marker, you will hear it but you will see that the video is not playing anything, then once you enter into the in-out section the video will play along, and when you pass the out marker the video freezes as the audio keeps playing. Hope this helps.

  • Fcp audio problem

    Hi all.
When i try to import a wav, file everything is ok..
but when i drag it on the timeline i have ****** audio and when i am
playing the same file in the viewer everything is fine ..
Does somebody know what to do ..
    Thanks

    i have **** audio<<</div>
Don't know what **** means in this case, but if your audio's specs don't match those of your FCP Sequence, then you may have problems or at the very least, have to render the audio. For example, if your Sequence is set for AIF format, 48khz, 16 bit, then you should convert any non-conforming audio to that spec prior to importing. QT Pro can convert to and from most formats you'll encounter.
The reason that it plays fine in the Viewer is due to the fact that the Viewer's output isn't constrained by the Sequence settings.

  • FCP Audio Sync Loss

I am using Final Cut Pro 5.0.4. I just loaded Leopard and now my audio sync is at least 20 frames off. All clips before the Leopard upgrade work just fine but any new clips are not sync'd.
Does FCP 5.0.4 not work with Leopard..... if so, will udgrading to Fianl Cut Studio 2 solve this problem.
    Thanks.

can't you upgrade to FCP 5.1.4? that is the latest FCP version of 5.

  • FCP Audio and firewire at the same time?

Hi, I was pondering an idea that made me wonder this. I hope it is not a stupid one but I am sure I get an "E" for effort or a "god bless his little heart".
I will be moving my mac to a studio to work on a instructional DVD. I will be capturing from one main camera real time via firewire, I have the option of going out of the console via optical for the instrument tracks and vocal. ( whether I can only have one active audio inputed track or two doesn't matter but would like two).
This audio will be pro quality and I just want to use FCP.
I am only interested in the video without the camera audio.
I want to capture the camera video(firewire) and studio(optical) audio at the same time.
If not it's no big deal I can route audio to the 3.5mm audio mike input on the camera.
I am running FCP studio and have no budget and a chance to play. I am on a barter project. I was just hoping for a time saver and down the road I would be happy to know my limitations as I may move into the studio and "sync" up.
I have another camera that I will add later for my Picture in picture effects.

Hey X thanks for your reply
Well I talked to my friend at the studio. and we are still saving the audio on digital hard drive in case this doesn't work. ( Which I know is the right way). I only asked the question because I apparently am lazy and want to spend as little time trying to sinc up later. My solution was to be fluid. In the end the project would be available for download tutorials/lessons from his web page, which will be a whole other delivery question as I am working through the third party whose project this belongs. Given my information I am trying to cover a lot of possibles to create something better than he is asking ( A Pro Job )
I was hoping to cross from "hobbiest" to "entry pro" here. Most I get to play with are relatives videos and stills. I have two completed two paying jobs in which I have purchased the mac and Final Cut Studio.
This is more of a controlled environment and wanted to utilize as many choices as possible.
The camera I am using (Panasonic PV-DV951-K) doesn't record to tape properly or doesn't replay what was recorded on tape. My solution was to go directly to FCP via firewire as a live realtime capture.
I opted for this as having no choice and in the end. Given the amount of lessons that would have to be captured and the equipment I have conjured up I think it is my best solution.
Again I thank you X and I meant no disrespect as to who is clueless. I am the one asking the questions. I don't always ask questions until I have searched the forum for an answer and appreciate those of you who take the time to answer "patiently".
Also I am an electronic technician and in a pinch devour troubleshooting to the point of magiverism.
When this is all over and I am enjoying a pint and reaping what few dollars this creates, I'd like to buy you all a beer. Then I'll plan the next hairbrain project.

  • FCP Audio Issue Beeping Tone - Trouble converting to AIFF from .DV files

    Hi!
I am recutting a couple projects that exist only as dvd's and dmg files. I converted them all to .DV files using MPEG Streamclip (they are married audio video files). I brought them in to FCP (drag and drop) and all of the audio plays fine in the viewer or when scrubbing, but when I bring clips into the timeline they just have that beeping tone. I am assuming it is because the files do not have AIFF audio, but I have no idea how I might go about converting it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

ok ok.... i can render it and the audio comes through. but i cant seem to find an import setting in either program that prevents this.
