FCP AUGraphicEQ = General Error

I recently started getting a General Error (39) when watching my sequences. I finally narrowed the problem down to the AUGraphicEQ filter in the Apple Audio folder in FCP 4.5. I cut the filter off all clips and it runs fine now.
I was curious if anyone else found this problem. I was pulling out the 20.0-63 Hz as well as 5000 to 20,000 Hz. The other FCP EQ doesn't seem to be that specific. Any recommendations on a decent alternative?

If you have Soundtrack, you can export your sequence to Soundtrack by going to, File, Export, For Soundtrack. Then it will ask you to save.
Then you can go into Soundtrack, open a new porject, and import that file. Soundtrack has many filters and effects and is more focused towards audio.

  • Opening FCP 6 project in FCP 5 (general error 41)

So I was handed this project halfway through completion that was done in FCP (version 5.0), that of course won't open FCP 5 (I get the General error 41).
I don't have access (as of now) to FC6 machine, so I can't even export an XML.
I do have access to Final Cut Express HD 3.5.1, but I am getting the same error there.
    Any help would be aprecaited.

    Here's how to zip...

You don't specify which part of your massive project you need exported to XML, so I exported the entire project to XML 2.0. It is here.

  • Trying to take a piece from Adobe CS6 to edit on FCP 7 - general error

I'm new to editing so please forgive my question or lack of technical knowledge.  Last year I had edited a short documentary for school using a trial version of Adobe CS5.  Fast forward a bit and now I'd like to make some changes to it using Final Cut 7.  Currently I downloaded the trial of CS6 on my laptop to try to make the transition easier.  I have a brand new iMac in which I upgraded the ram to 12gb.  I first tried to import the entire documentary as an .mp4 file and received the general error message, but not the out of memory message.  In researching my issue on this site I discovered that the file must be converted to prores.  I attempted to import a short piece of the documentary (~4 min out of the total 17min) as prores but I'm still receiving the same error.
Ideally, and I dont know if it can even be done but I'd like to somehow transfer the timeline over to FCP as well.  Please help, any input, ideas, thoughts, etc. would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!
    -Dan

mp4 is not a fcp friendly format.  Try using compressor to convert to prores.
As far as bringing your project into fcp:
First, did you capture your original material with timecode?
What format is the original capture?
If so, you may be able to export an edl from premiere and bring that edl into fcp.  You would have to probably convert the original captured material to an fcp friendly format and then manually match each shot in to fcp.
All doable and probably easier than starting from scratch.

  • General Error Issue: FCP 7 on my Mac Book Pro 10.6.8 2.53 GHZ 4GB

I'm working on a lengthy project, multiple timelines. Out of nowhere I started getting a "General Error" message on playback in a specific area of the timeline. I trash preferences, trash render preferences (making the timeline now red), and now the "General Error" pops up everywhere on the timeline on playback and render.
After trying everything I could think of:
    1. resetting scratch disks
    2. trashing preferences
    3. trashing render preferences
    4. repairing hard drives
    5. Converting to earlier saved versions of the project.
    6. Re installing FCP
    7. Finally, I tried creating a new project and dropping the original media in and recutting (matching timecode) and even this popped up the general error.
I'm cutting converted RED one footage and 16mm footage converted to quicktime files. I am only using about 1/2 of the harddrive space on my comp, and the scratch disks are currently set to a 2TB external G Drive with 500GB left.
This project has existed for over 9months that I've been tinkering with it and all of a sudden this issue appears. I find it strange.
I wasn't super organized in setting up the project (my first large film and first film ever on fcp), and the scratch disks have moved around a lot, etc. But, I've never moved the original clips, and it doesn't seem to be an issue of relinking the clips either. They don't seem to be offline at all.
The format of is super wide 2240 x 960 on the red footage and super square for the 16mm footage (I think 4x3)
Let me know if you have ANY thoughts/ideas/help or if you need additional info.

  • HELP! Can't Open a FCP project File, "General Error 41"

Trying to open a project for a Good guy
over a barrel, using FCStudio /FCP 5.1 FCP opens,
then says "General Error 41". All I need to
do is create an SD Version DVD, But first
    I Gotta open it.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Since this is your friend's FCP project file, check to see if he/she has version 5.1.1 or above.
I think the project file is from a newer format.
For some reason, the bump from FCP 5.1 to 5.1.x was big enough to require the project files to be a different format.
If that is the case, (and if you want to take the chance on the unknown,) you can upgrade to the version your friend has (or above.)
Make sure you really want to upgrade and are prepared for all the potential problems!
    Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

  • Cannot open projects in FCP - "General Error"

Well, just upgraded to OS 10.4.10, and FCP to 5.1 on my 867 quicksilver. several external lacie hard drives. 1.5 GB ram. after the archive and install of the OS, I could not open projects in FCP 4.5 due "General Error". I upgraded to FCP 5.1 and experience same issue.
at the time of OS upgrade, i also changed my second internal drive for a larger one, and put the original one, with its original name, in an external firewire housing. It appears on my desktop and is included in the FCP system preferences, so i assume that is not a problem.
    any ideas?

I updates to 5.1.4, and issue turned into "project file unreadable or from more recent version of FCP" when file is actually from older version. THIS problem was solved by disconnecting all external drives, opening 4.5 project and updating to 5.1.4, reconnecting and setting external drives in FCP system pref, and then reconnecting media.
I have had this problem also happen with a project i already successfully opened in 5.1.4 ...turns out i had opened it with some network drives on my desktop and then removed them. I put one back, it opened successfully, I got rid of the network drive and resaved and now it opens fine. In other words the message "project unreadable or from a later version of Final Cut" really indicates there is some drive rooting problem, not a problem with project file or what generation it is.
hope that helps anyone out there. sure is a relief to be working again.

  • General error (34) ??? tried everything FCP

Hey all, I am confused here. Before you reply note that I am not hugely tech-savvy, you may have to break it down for me.
I am using FCP and trying to export a basic 6 minute video. The source vid plays fine in quicktime. I have searched all over for a fix for general error 34 and what I've found is...
    this
    http://www.geniusdv.com/weblog/archives/general_error_34_in_final_cut_pro.php
which says to check the drive to make sure its not corrupted - did that, disk is fine. not gonna buy disk warrior for this one occasion. changed my scratch disk to a new folder in the same FCP files main folder, hasn't worked.
tried rebooting the program, taking out the extra audio files, i made sure that there were no in and out points, tried putting in and out points at the beginning and the end, nothing is working. rebooted, started a new project, still wont export. i just recorded this vid in eyeTV, works in quicktime, wont export... help?

OK, a number of comments.  Disk Warrior is invaluable and will save your butt when nothing else will.  Buy it.
You're dealing with 2 different issues.  Editing formats and delivery formats.  h264 is not an editing format.  Convert to prores or another fcp friendly formats (look at the easy setups to see other options) and edit in a matching sequence.  WHEN YOUR DONE, export a selfcontained qt with current settings and then bring that file into compressor and choose a high quality h264 qt for your DELIVERY.    Submit that to youtube.  It'll work.  If you need more specific settings for your submission to youtube, post back.  I think there's even a "share" option to youtube from within fcp.

  • General error in FCP re: rendering and export  after Quicktime 7.5.5 update

    Hi
My FCP 6.0.4 rendering and export to Compressor no longer works after an update to Quicktime 7.5.5.
Rendering fails after a few seconds "General Error!" pops up. Exporting to Compressor, after setting it compressing, Compressor after a few seconds fails. (audio is processed) My current work around is exporting a sequence using Quicktime conversion (time consuming) and then opening in Compressor.
I've done the usual, deleting prefs, new sequences and projects, even saving movs in different codecs.
    (been using H.264)
My sequences are all custom sizes but tests using presets also fail.
    Any ideas anyone?
And I was so happy the Quicktime upgrade could play sequence movs recorded months earlier that until now I couldn't play properly due to previous Quicktime upgrades!
Apple gives with one hand and takes with the other....

    Hi There,
Thanks for your reply on this.
Well basically since I'm using content already in the H.254 codec (eg: a trailer off the internet, or the downsizing of HD footage) i'm just exporting to a codec that didn't have to be rendered and gave quality results. I used motion jpeg B as an export codec because it was quick (although HD space hungry) with no drop in quality. The resulting exports could be imported into a custom sequence (720 x 405) as square pixel aspect ratio files. Overlapping the canvas with other windows (eg: viewer) meant I could play a clip (with dropped frames) but not have to render it. I selected the H.264 codec as the sequence codec because I've found other codecs introduce darkening or lightening or blurring or other undesirable artefacts when exported to Compressor. H.264 used in the sequence settings exported through Compressor would give resulting m2v's as sharp and contrast accurate as the source file.
That was until the recent 7.5.5 Quicktime update where attempts to do the same things I did before result in "General Error!" coming up after a few seconds of play or rendering.
Traditional DV codecs are "blurry" in my opinion, especially when coping with web content or conversion of HD downloads.
If you can suggest an editing codec that works best with FCP that is quick, doesn't introduce blurring or general degrading of the image I'd be happy to try it out. I typically downsize HD content from the web for DVD playback, so it's usually in a H.264 codec already. So i would need a codec for export from Quicktime that would work best with a codec in FCP. That doesn't alter picture quality when compressed to m2v in Compressor.
    Thanks!

  • General error when opening FCP project file

Hi, I have searched on the forums and found similar questions, but no solution yet.
I created a project about a month ago (FCP 5.0.4) and now I need to make some additions but every time I open the file (or all of the 20 autosaved files) I get a general error message. I tried moving the media files to another folder, but I still get the general error message. I have the project file on my local drive and the scratch disk is a My Book drive (I forgot to reformat the drive so it is still Fat32). I have removed the preferences and ran disk first aid already.
All of my other projects I can open just fine.
Any suggestions? I need to add about 2 more minutes to the project which is already 18min. It took me a week to edit and I really don't want to re-edit everything.
    I am using FCP 5.0.4 on a PB G4 1.5Ghz

I don't quite understand - did you move your project files to a FAT 32 formatted HD?
If so, they're probably cooked . . . (as in wrecked)
Check to see if they're .fcp and if not, try changing one to that, then try to open it.
Search this forum for something like FAT 32 or Mac OS Extended - you may glean more accurate info from that.

  • Receiving General Error when opening Project file in FCP 5.04

    Hi to everyone.
I would need a little help. We have 4 Macs running (two G5 and two Laptops). All running with FCP Pro 5.04.
When I create a project on my G5 and open it with my laptop everything runs fine. When I make some edits/renders and save the project and try to open it again, I receive a General Error message.
But on the other two machines the file opens. I have used FCP rescue, trashed also manually the prefs, deleted on the G5 the Render files, made a PRAM zap, used Disk Utility, cleared the Wavecache etc. but no result. The Mediafiles are stored on a LACIE 500 GB. I do work this way since years and never had this before.
Does anybody have an idea ?Thanks in advance.

    G5 2 Ghz Dual Core and G4 Laptop   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   4.5 Gig Ram, LA CIE 500 G

    Hi everyone,
at first thanks for the replies. I tried already the New User account. It's not working and also the Lacie is fine. The problem is more complicating, I guess.
Basically it's funny that the problem starts, when I have already worked in the project. When I set up the project (load picture and sound files all standard formats, Uncompressed picture and Aiff sound) and save the project, it opens simply, when I work in the project, edit, render etc (pluggins are on both machines identicall) and save (after deleting the render files), my machine is the only one who gives General Error.
Funny is that I used FCP since years in the same setup (Desktop-laptop) and never had this. I already trashed even the trash -:)
So I guess that this problem is a really special one, perfect for all Mac Sherlocks to solve -:)
So if anyone has an idea....
    Cheers Zolee

  • ----- GENERAL ERROR when opening PROJECT on different FCP ?? -----

Any reason why I'm getting 'general error (41)' when trying to open a client's rough cut of a project?
    I'm running fcp 5.0 on a dual G5....
Had no trouble importing digitized source material and animations from their G-RAID drive, but when I tried to open their project and review a rough cut, I get the error message.
Is it that they have a more current version of fcp?
    Anyone?
    Thanks,
    Mark

You need to be running the same or later version of FCP that your client's are running... that is the problem. You can get to 5.0.4 for free simply by running software update and downloading it. It's better software than what you're running now in any event.
If they are running FCP 5.1 or later you need to "crossgrade" to the current version of FCP. It's a bargain actually....
    http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/
It's 2 years ahead of what you're running now... new features, and bug fixes all over the place.

  • "General Error:48" in FCP - Please Help!!!

Okay, this may be a long winded post but please bear with me. I really need some help here.
I am relatively new to editing and FCP 7. I took some footage of my friend’s birthday party and wanted to make a small highlights video. I am using a Sony HVR-A1U and a new iMac 21.5 with the upgraded video card and a 500GB external Firewire 800 scratch disc.
I imported the footage into FCP using the 1080i60 Sequence Preset and HDV as my Capture Preset. Everything worked great and I was able to edit the video.
Here comes the problem… I was reading that Apple ProRes makes for a cleaner and clearer DVD when using a lot of transitions and such. So I decided to re-import my video footage from my Sony. I kept my Sequence Preset to 1080i60 but changed the Capture Preset to HDV-Apple ProRes 422. Everything imported fine from my camera and the clips show up in FCP. When I take any of the clips I imported and drag them down to the sequence, everyone of them shows that it needs to be rendered (RED). If I go up to render sequence, FCP throws me a “General Error: 48”. All the clips also do not show any video. They are just white with an “x” through them. Am I doing something wrong?
On a side note, when I go out to my scratch disc and try to open one of the ProRes files I imported from my camera, I get an error saying something along the lines of it cannot open an open data file.
    Thanks in advance!

Try matching your capture and sequence settings or rather than starting ProRes you can export Pro Res when you are ready to go to DVD

  • General error upon import into fcp

I can import video into my existing timelines with no problem... when i create a new sequence i can drag the clip into the timeline, but I get a general error message and a red screen that reads " display unavailable. close and reopen window to restore."   tried closing and reopening a dozen times to no avail.

Is your drive formatted macosextended?  Can you edit bars and tone into a new sequence?  What happens if you duplicate an existing sequence, select all and delete?  Can you then edit into this sequence?
Have you tried deleting your fcp preferences?  Get preference manager from www.digitalrebellion.com to do this.
Have you installed or updated any new software or hardware on your system recently?

  • "General Error" when importing QT movie to FCP

I am trying to import a QT movie to FCP to do a slideshow. The slideshow was done originallly on iPhoto and then exported to a QT movie. I then imported the file (the QT movie) to FCP. When I tried to play the movie in the Viewer, I got a "General Error" message. I shut everything down and tried again to no avail. I could move the playhead throughout the Viewer and see the photo at that spot but whenever I tried to play the clip the error message came on. I can export the slideshow to iDVD however, I then have no conrol over the music (I need to shorten a track and try to shorten the gaps between songs). I can't do that in either iPhoto or iDVD. That is the main reason I want to use FCP. I was able to do this a week ago for a different project although I was using a different computer then. My current problem is when I am using my G4, Dual 1 GHz, 2MB L3 cache per processor, 1 GB SDRAM. I'm using FCP 5.1.2.
Any suggestions? This is for a Christmas project!

    Jon,
I don't know if I am reading the problem right but ...when you export your video from iPhoto to FCP I am pretty sure you have to change how it opens. When I do this I save my slide show from iPhoto to the desk top then highlite it and "getinfo" to change it to a "open with QT movie" Then when you import it to FCP you can do what you like with compositing re music, titles etc.
Be aware tho that anything you do with that QT while in FCP will take alot of rendering because it is a complete sequence.
Me personally...after you finish ... export it to the desk top again and drag it into iMovie for a clean compression in Mpg 4. The slide show should be cyrstal clear. The pros may have better stuff to add but as an amature this works for me.
    I hope this makes sense!

  • FCP Book files - General Error (41)???

I just bought the FCP training series and transferred the files on the DVD onto my external (firewire) HD. I did as the book said and clicked File - Open - FCP book files - lessons - lesson 1 and I got the following error message:
    General Error (41)!
What does this mean? And what do I do to open the files?
(I even tried opening it from the DVD right away and got the same error message).
    HELP!

That's an upgrade you must pay for.
Go here: http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs/ to find out if your Powerbook can run it.
Another option might be to have someone with FCP 6 convert the project files to XML version 1 for you, although there may be features in the project that are not available in FCP 4.
