FCP Beachball

I have noticed since I installed a PCI Sata controller card, and new ram, plus new drives, I have been having problems.FCP (5.1.4) hangs up and I get the S.B.B.O.D. I must then push the power button to shut down. The drives are 500G western digital My Book externals. Connected to the PCI card via sata cables. Operating system 10.4.11. I have 8 gigs of ram. I added 6 Buffalo pieces in matched pairs, to my existing Apple ram. The PCI card is a Norco 4 import card, rated for either a PCI X OR PCI Mac system. I have downloaded Rember which I intended to check my ram today, I have used Tech Tools and everything checks out. I am in no hurry because I am done limping through my last project and have time to figure this out. .I have a Dual 2 GHz Power Pc G5. I was certain that after I came home and loaded the ram the card and the drives I would be in the fast lane, it was also told to me by the reseller he used the exact setup on his G5 identical and it was mind boogeling at the speed....ya right, its mind boogeling alright. Sometimes applications do not quit they have to be force quit...FCP will work until I leave the computer for 10 minutes or so. First an Icon like a reel of film replaces the curser, if you move the curser it becomes the %$&%^%& Beachball. At this point your only option is to push the start up button and hard quit. I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance

Well, you've not added anything to the CPU's speed... but I don't see anything that's not compatible here. Have you set your system up to not spin down the drives in the energy control panel? Might try that if it's set to let the computer go to sleep. Don't let it. Monitors are OK, but spinning down the drives in a FCP5.x system can result in the beach ball routine.
If you've not rebuilt that startup disk in a while, it's likely that doing so might speed things up a bit.

  • Spinning Beachball when switching out of and back into FCP

Whenever I switch to another application (including Finder) and back into FCP, I get 20-30 seconds of that stupid beachball before I do anything. Any thoughts?

  • Spinning beachball of death won't go away, iTunes always crashing

I've been having problems with my MacBook since updating to iTunes 8.2.1 a couple of weeks ago. After updating iTunes would hang on the spinning beachball and crash constantly- the application was totally unusable. I removed iTunes, reinstalled it and rebuilt my library. After that iTunes worked most of the time, but occasionally would get hung up on the beachball.
Over the past couple of days it's gotten much worse. I'm unable to have both iTunes and Firefox (or iTunes and any other application) open at the same time- I get the spinning beachball and have to force quit everything. It usually takes several minutes for the force quit command to actually work. Today I downloaded a show from the iTunes store and iTunes crashed halfway through. I was able to re-open iTunes and get the show downloaded, but when I tried to open iTunes again several hours later I got a message saying something about how there was a problem and that my iTunes library has been renamed as damaged.
I removed and reinstalled iTunes again and now iTunes won't open at all. I don't know how to move forward at this point. I ran disk utility to check the permissions and there were a number of problems, but no matter how many times I click repair permissions they reappear. (Permissions differ on "System/Library/Components/AudioCodecs.component/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .) It's the same permissions issue over and over. I don't know how to fix this.
Does anyone have suggestions on what steps I can take? Right now my computer is very frustrating to use because I'm not able to use more than one application at once, and I'm not sure if this is because of the problems I've been having with iTunes, or if it's something else altogether. Has anyone been able to successfully resolve their issues with iTunes?

  • FCP 6 Buggy?

Is there a list of confirmed bugs, and/or updates for FCP 6?
I've searched the forums and haven't seen to many things on FCP 6 as of yet. I aoplogize in advance if someone has posted simalarly to my issues.
We're at the tail end of a project, and upgraded to FCS 2.
    I'm on a Dual 2.2 G5, w/ 8G RAM, 500 internal, 3TB Raid, Radeon 9600 card/23" HD display.
We have a mix of media from P2, to hi-16mm, (converted DVCPRO HD), mini-DV, and some high speed Phantom V10 footage also DVCPRO HD.
Project settings are DVCPRO HD 720p60.
Everything seemed o.k. at first but quickly realized that some clips seemed to be 'slid/rolled' to a different portion of the source clip, (keeping the durations the same).
Also, I'm noticing some peculiarities in this multi-format timeline. For the most part its great that you can grab just about any footage and slap it in the timeline and you can either see it full res, or catch a green bar, (format outside settings) and see a low res version, none the less be able to play back instantly. However, when I render some of these clips, be it Stills, mini DV, or DVCPRO HD, it somehow randomlychanges the outcome of what I'm trying to see.
Sorry if I'm confusing, but here is a list of symptoms I've noticed:
    1. Random selection of clips when unrendered appear to be on different portion of source clip.----when rendered--wha-la- its in its correct position.
The problem with this is that I have to edit blindly, and keep rendering to see my every edit. even if I render a portion-that portion will be correct, then the rest of clip will jump to random spot.?!
    2. Some clips that have the low-res green bar will play in right position unrendered. When I render it, it will jump to wrong position of source clip.
I've tried sub-clipping and bringing back into timeline. this seems to work for a moment, however, when it comes into the timeline it appears black, if I render, its fine. If I want to time-remap it throws it out of whack once again.
    3. I did a full res render last night, and came in this morning to find that some stills, and mini-DV footage have turned black. Even when double-clicked into the viewer they appear black there as well. When I want to reset the render by grabbing the opacity key on the clip in timeline it chugs the system, gives me the beachball and nothing happens when red bar comes back.
    I've tried trashing FCP pref....nothing..
Furthermore, I've messed with the new Motion Stabilizer which I've seen and read, that it analyzes entire source media of clip, (pain in the butt). could that be possibly screwing things up?
Now it also occurs to me that it could be a RAID issue, We're having issues with our RAID Admin not communicating w/Raid, however still being able to work in FCP and see all clips.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks a lot, Zack

The RAID situation could be disastrous. In consideration of your client, you should begin immediately to plan for the worst case scenario: How will you rebuild this project if your RAID is damaged beyond repair?
Sorry no one has contributed to the thread yet, that happens around here with new software. Takes a couple of months for everything to filter down. Few who have upgraded so soon have anything that resembles your rig/resources so it's difficult for the major wonks to help.
While you're waiting, you can search for BUG but bugs are most often simple user errors reported by totally freaked out newbies or folks who upgraded in the middle of a critical project without considering the consequences.
Be sure to check the other FCP forums. If you crosspost, please consider closing all of your threads by posting your solution, should you get one.

  • FCP 6.0.4 problem

    FCP 6.0.4 on 10.5.4
When launching FCP the splash screen appears as usual, but from there on things go wrong. The beachball starts spinning for ages and than all of the sudden the program continues to boot normally or sometimes it crashes. During the beachball spin "Activity Monitor" displays FCP in red color as "not responding".
I have trashed all prefs, repaired permissions, run disk warrior created new users but nothing seems to help.
Anybody having the same problem? Any suggetions appreciated.

How did you install 10.5.4 and FCS2?
    Clean installs for both?
Or an update or archive install for the OS?

  • FCP 7.0.3 Canon GL2 Operation could not be completed...no video

    Having a problem with FCP version 7.0.3, on a MacPro1,1 (2007 2x dual-core Xeon 2.66GHz, 2GB RAM) running Mac OS X 10.6.8 and Canon DM GL2 connected via Firewire.
These used to work together in the past, but not now.
What's changed: ran out of space on original HDD, installed fresh OS X 10.6.8 on larger HDD then used Migration Assistant to migrate user account and settings and applications including FCP7 and rest of the Final Cut Suite 3.0. FC suite then was uninstalled and re-installed. Still have the original HDD and same problem exists on it as well as on the new install. Same problem also exists when switching to a newly created user account that had never used FCP.
Have used the recommended setting of "DV-NTSC Firewire Basic" for this Canon DM GL2 camera (from Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 Supported Cameras web page)
When I select "Log and Capture" from the File menu, the new windows open, the color bars show in the preview area but "preview disabled" shows in a black bar across the color bars. I see [VTR OK] below the buttons that control the tape movement, click the Play button, the LCD screen on the camera starts to show the tape playback for about 5 seconds, the place where the video SHOULD show up just has Final Cut Pro and an Apple logo and "Waiting for Timecode" in the silver area benath the black region, and the spinning beachball is rotating for a few seconds before the error message appears: "This operation could not be completed as there is no video. [OK]".
Several weeks ago, this used to work on the old HDD, but since then the new OS was installed on a larger HDD and this problem has surfaaced. Problem also exists on the OLD HDD at this time as well.
How can this issue best be resolved? Any suggestions will be greatly applreciated

I have three GL-2s and see this issue from time-to-time...  the good news is it's probably not your system or the hard drive; I had it on my G5 dualie (Tiger) and I have it on my 8x 3.2GHz Mac Pro (Snow Leopard) and it also occurs when I use a JVC deck, so it's probably not the camera either.
Over time, my work-around has distilled down to repairing permissions (just in case...) and removing and re-plugging the firewire connection. This seems to "jump start" the connection and gets things rolling again. I have no solid technical explanation but it's similar to what we've always done to re-establish a firewire connection if the device has been dismounted. I expect that it's rooted in the hot-pluggable attribute of firewire.
    Hope this helps

  • Changing seq. aspect ratio: crashes FCP

    Hi all,
Despite my best intentions, my project contains sequences with different settings, which is causing problems on export. A quick overview of sequence contents and field dominance settings:
    - SEQUENCE FIELD DOMINANCE: NONE
    - PSD frame-graphic overlay (FD: None)
    - QT titles from Keynote w/ transparency (FD: None)
    - regular footage (FD: lower)
These field dom settings are the only ones that allow the titles to render crisply.
Rendering out using Compressor, DVD-90 settings. Some sequences render perfectly, but in others, the titles are jagged & blurry when rendered out. The only difference I can find, is in the sequence aspect ratios.
The sequences that render properly, are set at 720x480 NTSC DV (3:2).
The ones that render jagged/blurry titles, are 720x486 CCIR 601 NTSC (40:27). (These display crisply in FCP Canvas, but render improperly.)
When I change a sequence's aspect ratio to NTSC DV 3:2, I get "Operation Not Allowed," then "Out of memory," then the canvas turns red with the words "Display unavailable. Close and reopen window to restore." Sometimes, I get the beachball and then FCP crashes.
Closing and reopening doesn't help; I still have the red window. Only changing back to CCIR 601 brings the sequence back online.
I have tried creating a new sequence and copy/pasting, but I get "Out of memory" etc.
    Can anyone advise??
    Thanks very much,
    Brett

By default Compressor assumes you're providing a 720x480 media file for compression to DVD. This is because DVD players can display only a 720x480 image.
If you send a 720x486 media file through the default Compressor settings, it will squeeze the image vertically to fit 720x480. It typically does not do this well.
If you suspect this is the problem, duplicate the DVD-90 setting, use the Inspector window and click on the Geometry button, select a Custom crop and crop 2 lines from the top and 4 lines from the bottom (always crop in even numbers for DVD playback). Rename and save the setting.

  • Anybody experience with FCP X and Macbook pro 15inch 2.2?

My old mid 2009 macbook harddrive died on me today, and I'm thinking to upgrade. Sell the old one and buy the new 2011 2.2. The old one was slow in rendering and had lots and lots and lots of spinning beachballs. Was I pushing it too hard? Don't know, but it was horrible. I lost so much time.
Anyway, does anybody have this combo fcp x and the new 15inch macbook pro with the 1gig card and what are your findings??
    Thanks
    Peter

I've got a 2011/2.2/8GB/6750 running FCPX. Once I troubleshooted my external HDs (a Drobo that was nearly full with Time Machine backups was slowing down the entire Firewire bus) things run a lot better. I'm currently storing video on a Promise Pegasus R4 Thunderbolt RAID and the entire system is pretty snappy. The only slowdowns are:
    1. clips, events, and projects on slower hard drives can slow down launching the app and screen refreshes
    2. FCPX is still flakey. It will run great for a whole day and then will refuse to launch the next morning.
    3. exporting through Compressor is slow, particularly when I'm under deadline! 10 minute HD segments can take an hour or so. The Activity Monitor shows the CPUs maxed out, so I suspect that's the bottleneck. I've tried setting up distributed rendering but it doesn't work quite yet.
    4. FCPX can be a RAM hog, so if you're a rabid multi-tasker like me, prepare to beachball or change your wicked ways.
All in all, FCPX runs pretty well on my MBP. If video editing was my main line of business, I'd seriously consider a Mac Pro stuffed with RAM and as many cores as I can find. I might wait for a newer one with Thunderbolt though for a bit of future-proofing.
    Hope this helps...

  • One possible reason for the spinning beachball with versions 10.0.2 trying to play/see anything

    Hi there.
I discovered today what is the reason for the strange problem I've been having with FCP X from 10.0.2+. The problem was that I just couldn't use it: I couldn't see any media in the canvas/preview pane, no matter if it was video, jpgs, psds, whatever. Trying to use or reproduce a project was just more of the same: a spinning beachball forever. At some point, from time to time, the black from the preview pane changes to a checkboard, but that was all.
    This happened in 10.0.3, 10.0.4 and 10.0.5.
I tried everything, removing the events, projects, and so on. The only thing that worked was to create a new user in my machine and use FCPX there. Everything seems to work fine there. I did that yesterday at 3am. Today I saw that the colors were off in that user, and I remembered that the calibration is not setup at the system level, but for each user, so went on to change the profile to use the one I did for my screen (I have my screens calibrated frequently). Voilá, now FCPX doesn't work anymore on the new user. The only change was the profile, so I went to System Preferences, selected the old (default) profile, and now FCPX works fine.
I don't know if the problem is my profile (I created it with ColorEyes DisplayPro, I don't have anything else right now to try to create a new one) or if the issue is with FCPX itself, as I have only had problems with FCPX related to the profile. In any case, the issue is now identified in my case, and even if I don't like to work in a non-calibrated screen, that will have to do for now.
I will try some other calibration software and see if the results are the same, but I thought of sharing my findings here in case someone is still having this issue.
Tomorrow that the 5770 arrives for my Mac Pro 1,1 I'll try to run it, also with the calibrated screen, and see what happens.
    HTH,
    Rodrigo

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean with "the profile is downstream from ColorSync"?
I'm willing to accept that there is something wrong with the way ColorEyes DisplayPro is making the profile, although if the OS loads it and uses it and doesn't complain at all - nor any other app I use - I don't see why FCP should have issues with it. But I'm willing to try some other app to create the profile for the screen and will do as soon as I can get my hands on some other.
Between lines, hopefully I'm wrong, but I read you are telling me that FCP doesn't support having a "typical" monitor calibration, usual in printing/photography/etc workflows, but only supports calibrated output through broadcast monitors, using third party hardware? And that in the Color screen settings I must not use any "user generated" screen profile?

  • Log and Transfer Crashing FCP

Not sure what is going on. Been using Log and Transfer for 8 months to capture video from P2 Cards in Panasonic HVX200 recorded in 720p60. Haven't had a problem before. Today, went to capture new footage (only about 15 minutes worth) and the first time I briefly saw the dialog window before FCP crashed, but since then, after restarting, closing the open files, creating a new project, making sure software was up to date, etc, it keeps crashing before even showing the window. I just get the 'spinning beachball of death' for about 5 seconds before the crash.
I also tried just transferring the files to the local drive first than running the log and transfer, but that didn't work either.
I don't have FCP tricked out with any plug-ins, with the exception of Flip for Mac, but that has been running fine for all 8 months.
    Any ideas?

Shane's Stock Answer #44: FCP acting weird or unusual. Just not like is normally should
If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/trashing_fcpprefs.html
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.
    4) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

  • I have been having the perpetual "spinning beachball" problem.

I get the perpetually "spinning beachball" when doing simple tasks in FCP X. It will happen when I try to place play, or move to a different part of the timeline. I tried many things, like resetting the preferences file, and reinstalling. After reinstalling, everything seemed to be working fine, but I was working on a different file. When I went back to the file that was originally having the problems, the problems manifested again. This led me to believe that the problem was that particular file. I looked into the file and it is a whopping 26GB! This leads me to believe I am having problems because the file is so large. Is there a way to compress it but stil have it usable? Please let me know! This has taken up a lot of my time trying to figure out. Thanks!

Where did the file come from?
When you select it in the Event browser, and use the inspector (command-4), what does it say in the "Info" panel? That should tell you the codec/format.
To optimize the media, select it in the Event browser, and in the "File" menu select "Transcode Media..." On the next screen you have options for "optimized media" and "proxy media." Note that you might have already created these when you first imported.
Finally, what kind of computer are you using; be as specific as possible with regards to type, year you bought it, amount of RAM. you can get some of this info from using "About this Mac..." from the apple menu.

  • EMac display problems connected to FCP problems?

I've posted this problem on the boards before, but figured its about time to give it another go. I've an eMac running OS X.3.3 and FCP 4.5 (along with the rest of the Production Suite package minus motion). Over the summer, I had brought the computer to my collegue's work studio. There we have a G5 (1.8 GHz) and a G4 desktop (dunno the specs). I had transfered a project from my eMac to the G4 and finished it there. While working on it, the still pictures apparently all went offline but when clicked, they showed up in the viewer just fine.
I finished the project on the G4 in the studio and moved it back (via ethernet network) to the eMac. When I did this, the problem came with it. In addition, whenever I put text on a project in FCP, it would be green and partly transparent.
Then I noticed certain buttons in FCP were not readable on a few pop-up menus (The 'set scratch disks' menu in particular). There are a black pixelated rectangle with the button-ends instead. Also, when I run Toast Titanium (for burning TS folders from DVD Studio Pro) there are several lines across the program window that appear static-y.
In a hopefully unrelated problem, the eMac (Now back at my house) gets stuck while 'allocating disk space' during capture now. I'm trying to capture to one of my 2 external drives. The one in question is a lacie 250 gig that has a fantom 250 gig daisychained through it into one of the two firewire ports on the computer.
PUH-LEESE give some advice if you have any. I've resorted to the version of Premiere Pro on the PC, which is ok, but not up to par with FCP.

First of all, your last question - when you trash prefs it removes the limit on Capture now. That tells FCP to allocate every last bit of disk space when doing a capture now, thus the beach ball when capturing Now to external drives. Go into your prefs and limit Capture Now. Also, if you are running Norton or Virex, don't. They will also cause the beachball during capture. You can read all about it in Shane's stock answers at the top of the forum.
Second - your display issues - do you have the colors set to Millions? As to the apparently "offline" media, that's just your thumbnail cache. You can delete that and it will be rebuilt.

  • Beachball time, Mac Mini

OK, I know what you're thinking..that the Mac Mini wasn't designed for FCP, and that the G5 is really the only machine to work on. I used to have 2 DP G5s, so I'm aware of their power.
My mini gives me huge amounts of beachball time when working on my 720p animation. I get little or no beachball time when working with DV footage, either animorphic or not.
The beachball time I get in my animation doesn't go away. I'll get the beach ball, it'll stop. I'll try to pull down a menu and I'll get more beach ball. It'll stop, I'll try to do something else and yes, more beach ball.
    ad nauseam.
The mini's boot volume is a 200GB external FW drive, 7200RPM, and I have my FCP projects folder on another such 7200RPM FW drive.
My hunch is that those drives' thruput isn't enough to sustain continuous play, but why the never-ending beachball episodes.
It's like it gets mad and won't stop beachballing.
    Any suggestions?
Do I need to create a partition for Panther and run FCP 4.5HD on that?
I've got the mini running on the latest rev. of Tiger right now.
    thanks for any hints!
    ray

my final destination is the small screen. I'm not concerned with TV or with CRTs. I was aiming for something that would play on LCD screens, potentially go to film, hence the 24 frame rate.
In terms of converting to Anamorphic DV can I get there by re-exporting my existing clips to 800 x 450 px? They're in Animation format now; would re-exporting them cause artifacts or damage?
I guess what I mean to ask is: how would I convert my existing animation clips, and how should I render my clips from here on out? All at 800 x 450?
Thanks much for the ideas..I guess I was just a hair ambitious hoping to do this with a mini!

  • Sudden slowdown / sluggishness with FCP Capture...

I need some help troubleshooting, gang... I've tried to capture hdv footage the last two days with the same result: after going into log and capture, and hitting "capture now", there's about a minute delay with the spinning beachball before capture begins.
It is acting almost like I'm close to being out of room on the hard drive(s) but I have over 100gb on both my media drive, and the program drive. I have nothing else running, and I'm up to date with 10.4.10, fcp 6.0.1 and QT 7.2 . This is on a mac pro 2.6GHZ with 2GB of RAM. I tried capturing dv, and that does the same thing. I also tried using the internal drive to capture to rule out an issue with the external drive. Same result. I have a feeling it started with one of the updates to either fcp or QT. if anyone has had the same problem, or can send me down the troubleshooting path. that would be great.

This is happening to me today as well. Has it got something to do with 10.6.7 I have just updated and now I seem to be having the same problem

  • Imported PDFs = Beachball?

Hi, I'm having a problem with imported PDFs.
I brought a few into FCP (they're multi-paged) and whenever I try to do anything with them (make and edit, move them, anything) I get the beachball for about 30 seconds, then I'm able to do whatever it is. This is after I render them. Also the arrow is open (white in the middle) right before the beachball.
Am I missing something that's obvious? I though PDFs were okay in FCP. (I searched on this and didn't find anything to the contrary)
    Thanks,
    Ariel.

Okay, now I am having this problem all over the sequence. I imported some TIFFs into FCP to work with them and leave the PDFs behind. But now every time I try to do something the arrow gets white in the middle and the beachball comes up. Again, then I can do whatever I was trying to do but it's incredibly frustrating.
I trashed my prefs and restarted, but it has only increased. I think I must be missing something, but I don't know what it may be.
    Thanks for any thoughts.
    - Ariel.
