FCP captured clips look shorter

Some clips captured with Log and Capture, when opened from the browser, show only the first frames of the shot (as if they were shorter than their real length). The sizes of the clips in the finder appear correct, and the clips can be wieved in their full length using QT Player.
I finally found a manual workaround: adding the ".mov" extension at the end of those files fixes the problem.
Any suggestion?
Thanks

Sorry if I was stating the obvious.
No worries. It's hard to tell the experience of others.
Quicktime Player always, in my experience, plays back
video footage at a lower quality than FCP.
Right, but the clip looks the same in FCP as it does QT stand alone.
Not sure about FCP and Cinema Tools though. Since all
the apps use the same Quicktime codecs you would
think they would display at the same quality.
You would think. That's why i'm at a loss to see why there's so much difference.
I've never had an issue with FCP, I'm assuming you've
rendered everything before comparing quality?
There is nothing to render. The clip is raw out of the camera. From camera to Hard Drive. That's it. I opened it in the finder w/ QT and then in FCP. It looks identical in both. But when opened in CInemaTools, it looks much better. Blacks fuller. The clip looks noisier and more washed out in both FCP and QT than in CinemaTools.
Also, nothing was done to the clip in any program. It's raw from camera capture.
Also just noticed you didn't say your footage was HD
(you were talking about your hard disk) and so my
comment aboout a HD TV was rubbish - an SD monitor or
TV would suffice.
Right. I took it that way.

  • Is capturing in iMovie before transfer to FCP affect clip quality?

Capturing in iMovie detects all the start/stops. Then, importing in FCP is a fast and easy way to get all start/stops. But, does the resulting video quality just as good as if the capturing had been done entirely in FCP ?

#20 Using iMovie to Capture for FCP edit
    Shane's Stock Answer #20:
iMovie handles the media differently from FCP, specifically where audio is concerned. So it is not a recommended workflow. Here's why...
iMovie captures using DV Stream (.dv) standard which does not use timecode. That is a big disadvantage over the way that FCP captures in that you can't go back and recapture the material at a later date if you need to revisit a project.
The DV/NTSC specification (the one FCP uses) also calls for seperate tracks for audio and video, even if you capture it as one clip. iMovie' DV stream format is muxed audio and video, which means that they are tied together (I can't get into specifics because I ain't no engineer or programmer). FCP is a bit more demanding and captures the seperate audio/video tracks, either in a single media file or as seperate video and audio files. With FCP you could capture video only or audio only because each is defined by the DV specs. while with iMovie you can't.
Also, if you drop the iMovie footage into the timeline, your will get the RED render bar forcing you to render the footage in order to see it...

  • Why does my clip look different in Color vs FCP via External mmonitor

Can anyone explain why my clip look slightly different in color as opposed to FCP. This clip is exported from FCP sequence with NO filters whatsoever. I'm basically viewing the same clip and switching between color and FCP. The clip seems to have a tad more highlight when viewing in color
    I'm using a MacPro/Kona3/Sony Multiformat CRT. Thanks

seems to have a tad more highlight when viewing in color
Do you see a difference in the scopes? "seems to" is not as good a description as we really need to sort out whether this is a gamma issue or a possible 601/709 conflict, even with your Multiformat Sony. There appear to be a lot of RGB, Y'CbCr conversions in your image pipeline.
I am aware that some codecs are handled slightly differently by Final Cut and COLOR. They do not use the same media decoding engine. COLOR's is much more basic (fundamental) and generally speaking is more accurate for that reason. Similar to SHAKE in that respect.

  • Batch List: How to capture clips inc info, from disk instead of tape

We have a client's edit log on Excel, including reel no, in/out, scene, description, log note etc. Usually we import this batch list to FCP, then batch capture from DVCAM tapes, so all clips have all their info - great.
In this case, the material is already digitised and the client has logged from DVDs burned with timecode from the digitised material being placed in FCP sequencecs with timecode generator filter.
Is there a way to 'batch capture' clips from the digitised material, so that we keep all the client logging info, as we would if we were capturing from tape?

Shane has got it right - we want to automatically build a sequence using that batch list. Or somehow have FCP make new clips or subclips from already captured footage... so if your verdict is right Shane, looks like we may have to go the manual route...
although - just occurred to me - for each clip, I could go to the digitised source sequence, duplicate it, open copy in timeline, enter clip's in and out tc in the viewer - and that will give me a copy of each clip as a sequence - rename that sequence as per the clip, and we're done.
But it's still of course more laborious than batch capture from tape; this is a concern going forward as we are switching to XDCAM EX, so of course the route to enable this client-edit-logging ( http://www.creationvideo.co.uk/info/timecode/ ) that we've always offered clients is no longer valid as the material is already online....
    Any suggestions still welcome!

  • Captured clips are playing back at least TWICE as fast

Hey all- I am capturing HD footage from a JVC Pro HD camera - footage shot at 24P. Everything seems fine with the capture (except for the fact that there is no device control - only capture now), but when I play back the captured clips I hear the audio playing at normal speed but the video is playing back at leat at twice the speed - all actors are in FAST motion. I hear the crew and director speaking, getting ready to shoot as I watch the scene start and speed through and end right as the clip ends.
Any ideas? Is it a setting on the OUTPUT for the camera?
    Thanks for any help.

Neither Final Cut Express nor Final Cut Pro support
720p24 material. You need a product like HDVxDV to
    bring it in.
    Tom-
Thanks for getting back to me last night. You seem to be a master in these parts. I am new here. I am really a director and writer but through my production company I have done a number of things in FCP over the years, always without any problems. That is until the introduction of HD and 24p at which time I sort of started saying to our amazing editor "whatver you say" and clouding over with confusion. After I got your message I went and got FCP 5 from the Apple store in an attempt to keep my friend, whose short we were trying to edit, from crying. Once installed and running we had the same issue as we had in FCE HD - the video - in terms of quality - was captured perfectly, but the clips would play back at almost twice the speed that they should have. I tried virtually every easy set-up that pertained to HD and nothing worked. On a few of them I could get an actual Log and Capture window to come up but when I went to play the material via device control there was no image, althoug I could see TC running. A friend suggested that you have to take the captured HD 24p clip and bring it into the timeline and render it for it to work. Is that true? I tried it to no avail. So, he shot on JVC GY-HD 100 at 24p. I now have FCP 5 HD and am considering buying LUMIERE software that purports to streamline this very issue. Any thoughts or suggestions you may have for me would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much,

  • Problems capturing clips

I using the latest version of FCP with a Blackmagic card. Everything has been working fine until today. I'm having problems capturing clips. I'll start Log & Capture, grab a clip, the window displays it is capturing it, and then when I look at the logging bin, my clip is not there. But if I look in the capture scratch folder, the clip is there.
Now, if I try to import that or any other clip, FCP gives me an error message. Does anyone know what could be wrong? I would appreciate your help.

Probably a Black Magic issue so be prepared to talk to them.
To debug this, you have to take the Black Magic stuff out of the equation to determine if FCP is at fault. If you have any DV device, try to capture from it.

  • Capture (almost) always short

This is driving me crazy. I discovered after logging & batch capturing that many of my clips end before the time code I had set for an out point. Usually the difference is a few seconds. I have been re-entering the time codes & recapturing, and sometimes it's OK, other times it completes the capture but the clip is short. I have tried adding handles, "using logged clip settings" & not, even telling it to capture an extra minute of footage only to have it decide to end at an earlier spot. Why is this happpening?
    Thanks,
    Eric

Hmmm... Well, I did not have "abort capture on timecode break" clicked. I'll change that. The other setting, "create new clip on timecode break," does not appear in the preferences list. I'm in FCP 3.0.4, if that's why. I also did not have "abort capture on dropped frames" checked - do you think I should check that, too?

  • A/V out-of-sync issue for FCP captures

I've read many of the out-of-sync posts on this board, most of which seem to indicate that the problem is usually caused by either dropped frames, bad timecode breaks, edit errors, or disunity between FCP capture and sequence settings, compared with audio sample rates for the underlying files.
My files, shot on my Panasonic AG-DVX100A in 24pa mode, result in perfect (except for the anamorphic screen size - see my next post!) Quicktime movie files, in perfect sync. It's only when I create clips from those files in FCP that the video and audio go out of sync. And the out-of-sync drifts; that is, the further you go in the clip, the more out of sync the sound and the video gets.
My camera is always set to the 24pa mode, which, by default, records only in the non-drop-frame mode, regardless of any other camera settings I may have selected. The audio settings in my camera (and in the resulting underlying QT files that are created when I capture in FCP) are 16-bit integer and 48.000 khz, as they are in both my FCP sequence presets and capture presets, so I don't think it's an issue of conflicting sample rates. My device control presets are for Firewire NTSC NDF (non dropped frame).
Given the above information, does anyone have any idea what else I might be doing wrong? I've already shot hundreds of hours of footage last year that worked fine. I don't know what I changed to cause this out-of-sync problem now, but I'm going bald tearing out my hair trying to figure it out.
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Captured Clips Not in Browser

Am having a problem capturing video. The clips exist in the Capture Scratch folder but they have never made it to the project browser window.
Running 10.4.9 in an iBook G4. Using FCE HD 3.5. Scratch Disk set to an external hd (Maxtor 120) and Easy Setup to DV-NTSC 32 kHz Firewire Basic because my video camera is a Canon ZR 45. Using DV tape---no HD. What else? Initially had a problem with camera recognition, but did the QT thing which solved that.
Capturing is a problem, yet when I played the QT clips in the Capture Scratch folder they seem OK.
Anyone have an idea about what is (isn’t) going on? Maybe these clips were never captured at all. So why are they in the folder?

    G'Day Lee.
If they are on the Scratch Disc and play correctly then the capture side of things is OK.
The only thing I can think of is that you may have had more than one Sequence open at the time and the captured clips in question have been associted with the Browser Folder that was the active capture bin.
Always look for a little clapper board icon at the top left of the Browser. It's into this Folder/Bin all captures appear. If so:
Open your Seqeunce, use File>Import Files, then navigate to your Scratch Disc where the files are you wish to have in Browser, select them and hopefully it's all good.

  • Clips look worse after render

    Hello,
I have added the Color Corrector and RBG Balance filters to my clips, but once I render the timeline, the clips look worse than when they are not rendered. (I play through the time line before I render, and it looks great.) They look really grainy after rendered.
    Running FCP 6.0.2
    QT 7.4.1
    I used the Easy Set up -> HDV-Apple ProRes 422 1080p24
Clips were shot in 24f with XH A1
    Sequence settings:
    Frame size: 1440x1080 16:9
    Rate: 23.98
Render Codec: Apple Pro Res 422
Do I have my settings right?
I appreciate any help on this!

It depends what you are doing with the color correction. Raising the blacks/mids too high will introduce noise in itself.
Another factor is how you are monitoring, FCP always uses a lower res proxy image to better enable real-time playback. You can only really assess the quality on an external pro monitor or at the very least, an excellent TV

  • Should I export captured clips as Quicktime movies?

Do I need to export my captured clips as Quicktime movies if I want to import them as source clips in other projects?
I had been importing directly from the capture scratch folder, but this resulted in mono audio tracks, rather than stereo. Everything else looked fine...
This problem has been driving me nuts...perhaps this is the explanation.

    I figured it out elsewhere.

  • Timecodes Missing on Captured Clips?

After capturing DV clips, FCE refuses to show the timecode information. The FCE Browser window won't show the Media Start or End timecodes. Cntrl-click on the browser headings refuses to allow switching to logging vs standard view. The camcorder (Sony TRV9) is in the Apple approved list, and controls fine from the FCE capture window: even allowing specifying timecode start and end for the clip: then doing the clip capture at the correct times. captured video and audio are fine. But Edit-Item Properties on a captured clip in the Browser shows only format information: no tab for timecode data. Yet when I installed the i5m video filter to overlay timecode data on top of a video clip: it shows up correctly in the Viewer window: the timecode data is clearly in the clip file, but FCE refuses access to it! Tried trashing prefs, reinstalling FCE, using a different user account, rebooting and restarting camera, changing from NTSC firewire to firewire basic etc. OS 10.4.3 and FCE 3.0.1 are latest version of everything as of 12/19/05. Anyone else run into this?
    G5 2.5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1GB RAM, 250/400GB SATA Drives

Tom: thanks: my confusion came from the Final Cut Express Help pdf file, but evidently its in error, and must be confusing FCP with FCE. I had even called Apple User Support and they thought the timecodes should show, but indicated that sometimes the FCE documenation confuses features that are only in FCP.
    thanks for the quick response!

  • FCP to Quicktime - looks great in QT but has drag on a TV

OK, have FCP 6 and everything going great. I had some files that were in AVI. I converted them using MPEG Streamclip to .mov format...so I thought. The first few did convert but then I wasn't watching and Streamclip set back to default and I accidentally converted some to "Apple JPEG A". I found this out later when I put it to DVD and there was drag (football highlight video) behind all the players running. Looked great on FCP and in Quicktime. BUT, when I dump to DVD and play on my TV the drag is there. The obvious solution is to take the AVI's that I messed up on and re convert them to mov. However, I broke the cardinal rule and dumped them. All clips look great, except the ones that went to JPEG A. I tried to reconvert them to mov but no effect. Any ideas....PLEASE? Why does it look good in QT but not on a TV?
    Bryan

Does the outputted QT file have it's High Quality bit set?
    if not:
    Open it in QT player
    command+j for the Movie Properties
select the video track and then click on the Visual Settings button
click High Quality button and save.

  • Capture Clip Mono vs. Capture Now Stereo

I am baffled by the difference between the audio that results from Capture Clip vs. Capture Now. When I capture a clip using Capture Clip (setting the In and Out points), the resulting clip shows the audio as mono with two individual mono tracks. When I capture with Capture Now, the resulting clip shows the audio as Stereo, with the left and right stereo tracks. I cannot understand why this happens. I have tested this using the exact same footage from the camera. Any ideas? I've looked for a setting that can change this. I would prefer that the audio is captured as stereo, since I don't want to have to manually link all my audio tracks in the timeline.

This is way odd: I did a interview using both external mic and a wireless mic. Both tracks are being displayed in the camera (Sony PD 180), but there is no way I can pick up the wireless track in my FCE- of course, is the track I need . Only track that comes up in FCE is the monotrack of the external mic - which is useless

  • Capture Clips and Mac Book Drive

My first question is... I need to free up gig space on the Mac so that I can run Pro Tools (not simultaneously with Final Cut Express HD of course). When making movies on Final Cut Express HD, I notice that each time I capture a clip it is not only being saved in my external Seagate drive (as I instruct it) but apparently it is also being backed up in the Mac and there is over 100 gigs of 160 that is hidden somewhere that apparently is just extra space being used. How can I delete that and make sure that the all of the capture clips are on the external hard drive? Thank you. I am sure it is a simple answer. (I am not exactly sure of the operating system I don't have access to all of the paperwork at the moment- I bought the Mac and Final Cut in February 2007).
    Dan

FCP doesn't ever put clips twice on the computer don't think... something else is causing your buildup of files.
You can see where each clip is stored in FCP though... right click on any column header in the Browser and select "Show Source" as a new column to be added. It will show you where the media is on your system that the clip is referencing... bet it's only on that external...
