FCP: Capturing 120 fps slo-mo?

A friend has a Canon camera and has shot some 120 fps video. It looks gorgeous in the camera. How can this be imported in FCP? Don't see frame rates that high for capture....
thanx!

Search the forum for the camera model. It \probably shoots a proprietary format at that speed. You will need the Canon software, likely PC-only.

  • Problem reading GoPro Hero Black 4 files (1080p 120 fps) on my iMac with Adobe Premiere Elements

    Hello,
I have a problem reading GoPro Hero Black 4 files (1080p 120 fps) on my iMac with Adobe Premiere Elements : the file is read but the quality is quite bad. When I watch it with other software like VLC or MPC, the quality is perfect but the video is sometimes slowed or there are some jumps in the reading.
What is the issue with this ?
    thakns for your help !
    Olivier.

This is easy. I do it all the time. FCPX ingests GoPro footage just fine. Optimize, and you're good to go.
BTW: A common hiccup occurs when dealing with over-cranked footage. (60fps or 120fps.) Be sure to "conform speed" to actuate the slo-mo. 'Tis also important to designate your project / timeline at 24fps or 30fps to realize the speed difference.
I've gotten burned in the past. I'll drag my over-cranked GoPro footage to the timeline. As it is the "first" clip layed into the timeline, the project assumes THAT speed as a default. (As per my preferences.) Thus, when I "conform speed," nothing seems to happen. That's because my project is displaying at the higher rate. A 60fps timeline showing footage shot at 60fps looks "normal speed."
FYI. (And disregard if you know all this.)

  • Final Cut Pro X doesn't seem to recognize 120 fps

I hust bought a GoPro Hero 2 with the capability of shooting 120fps. When I upload the clip into my timeline it says that it can't recognize the format and prompts to 60 fps. Any thoughts on how to get the full 120 fps? Thanks

    Here is the link.
    http://gopro.com/3d-cineform-studio-software-download/
But Tim Wolsky is correct. If you set your project at 29.97 before you start editing the project and then drag the clips in, they will conform to 29.97 and be able to slow down. I also like it in Final Cut becasue it is preset to ramp up and down into slow motion. Meaning, if you only want part of your clip in slomo, you select the Range tool, highlight that section and slow it down. Final Cut has an algarithm that does a slight ramp down to slow mo, so it isn't jarring. Very cool.
The gopro software will allow you to slow it down to the appropriate frame rate then export it as the longer, full slow motion clip. It's more exact than final cut, becasue it doesn't work in percentage, but you do lose flexibilty.
I shot some footage the day I got the camera and slowed it down in Final Cut. I will upload and post it to the thread, if you are curious on the end result. It's just grainy, becasue it was dark and indoors, but you will get an idea of the smoothness of the effect.
    Hope this helps.

  • A/V out-of-sync issue for FCP captures

I've read many of the out-of-sync posts on this board, most of which seem to indicate that the problem is usually caused by either dropped frames, bad timecode breaks, edit errors, or disunity between FCP capture and sequence settings, compared with audio sample rates for the underlying files.
My files, shot on my Panasonic AG-DVX100A in 24pa mode, result in perfect (except for the anamorphic screen size - see my next post!) Quicktime movie files, in perfect sync. It's only when I create clips from those files in FCP that the video and audio go out of sync. And the out-of-sync drifts; that is, the further you go in the clip, the more out of sync the sound and the video gets.
My camera is always set to the 24pa mode, which, by default, records only in the non-drop-frame mode, regardless of any other camera settings I may have selected. The audio settings in my camera (and in the resulting underlying QT files that are created when I capture in FCP) are 16-bit integer and 48.000 khz, as they are in both my FCP sequence presets and capture presets, so I don't think it's an issue of conflicting sample rates. My device control presets are for Firewire NTSC NDF (non dropped frame).
Given the above information, does anyone have any idea what else I might be doing wrong? I've already shot hundreds of hours of footage last year that worked fine. I don't know what I changed to cause this out-of-sync problem now, but I'm going bald tearing out my hair trying to figure it out.
Thanks in advance for your help!

The dvd recorder was in the loop when the sync issue showed up.  the dvd was in sync but the live stream, next in line, was out of sync.  I have returned to using the older machine with xp.  (the lap top is running vista)  The older machine is a desktop which requires more space on the production table and time to set up.

  • 120 FPS slowdown - 240 FPS no slowdown. Why?

I have a preset on 1080p and 60 FPS. I import a video shot with GoPro hero 3, having 720p and 120 FPS. This video is slowed down 2:1, and my googling skills told me, that is a result of Premiere Pro only going up to 60FPS. However - I also have some WGA 240 FPS shots - You would think that these would be slowed 4:1, due to 240 / 4 = 60, but they smoothly and normaly. How is that? Because I really want my 720p /120FPS to run normally as well.

    Hey Jeff
I looked into the modify you talked about, and found this:
The upper one is WGA, 240 fps. In the modify ->interpret footage, it doesnt change the FPS, video or audio.
The lower one is 720p, 120 fps. In modify --> interpret footage, the FPS is changed from 120 (as seen to the left) to 60. If I change it manually, or by "assume this frame rate: 60", the video runs normally and not slowed 2:1 - But the audio is off sync because is doubles the speed.

  • GoPro 120 fps footage lags in premier pro help!

So I've filmed action sports mostly in 720p at 120 fps but when I import those files into premier pro it becomes extremely laggy (anything 60fps and under works fine), I have been forced use the go pro studio app  to import and convert the video files into a useable format, but in the process it drops the frame rate 60fps and in turn I cannot achieve the same level of slow mo I could with 120 fps. Please help I don't know what to do, but I inevitably want awesome clean slow mo footage!
    Regards,
    Elliott

Thanks, but is it possible to use it directly through premier without converting it through go pro?

  • Stream 2 x 120 fps cameras to disk ... HDD can't keep up?

So I have two Basler firewire cameras.  Each camera has its own firewire-B card.  And I I wrote some LabVIEW software that can grab frames at 120 fps per camera.
But I am unable to stream to disk quickly enough to keep up with the frame grab.  Even if I use a producer-consumer architecture, my buffers end up overflowing.  Because I am logging from two cameras simultaneously, I am essentially streaming 240 fps to disk, and each image is color and 640x480.
Question:  any reccomendations on how to get around this?  I am curious if a new and fast PC with a super-fast HDD will solve the problem.  Or maybe even a SSD drive?

It all depends on the data rate you have to stream. Different storages have different performance. Benchmarks are the key to get a feeling if a storage type (HDD, SSD, RAID) is sufficient to handle the given data rate. This white paper has some sample benchmarks included which can give you some figures.
Let's make a small calculation on your figures:
    640 * 480 (Resolution) * 2 (32 bit color depth) * 240 (fps) = 147456000 B/s. This is round about 147 MB/s. Pure data without any additional information.
So you can see that even SSD will most probable be not sufficient (read something about 70-80MB/s for SSD writing), so you will have to use RAID.
    hope this helps,
    Norbert
EDIT: The transferrates for SSD is very different. Maybe, this chart helps a bit, even though it does not state MB/s....
CEO: What exactly is stopping us from doing this?
    Expert: Geometry
    Marketing Manager: Just ignore it.

  • Does Logic 9 Support FCP Capture Cards?

Does Logic 9 support FCP video capture cards for audio in an out?
I have a Blackmagic Decklink Extreme, analog ins/outs as well as digital AES/EBU
Didn't have much luck with Logic 8 and the FCP cards so I used my Line 6 GuitarPort but it only has one 1/4" phono input.
    FutureX

    Hi FutureX,
I would suggest you ask your question on the FCP forum if you don't get any reply here. Maybe you'll find someone there who can be of help. In any event, i doubt that buying an MBox with PT LE will meet your requirement for FCP capture cards, really!
Apple won't respond to you here. That's not the place. This is a user forum. You could also call a production studio in your area and ask politely to a pro who's working with that stuff on a daily basis. I'm sure you can find someone. Good luck...

  • 120 fps double playback time

    Hello,
    may someone can explain me..
I tried Premiere CS6 while looking for a Programm to work on my GoPro Videos.
I imported a 720p 120 fps Video and is was playing "normal".
BUT, then i noticed, that the video, what should be about 15 minutes long, has double length about 30 minutes in the timeline and also when i export it with 60 fps.
When i play the source file it is 15 minutes long. In other Video editing tools, it is 15 minutes.. only in Premiere it get 30 minutes.
so why? and how can i change that to the original time?
i tried with "change speed" but then, audio doesn't sound original or gets asyncronous.
    thanks
    Christian

Thanks.. i got it now.. finding the "interpreate footage" in german language
ok.. changed it to 120 fps so the clip is no 16 minutes.
BUT.. playing it, the sound is like playing with double speed.
So now i have to "sync" the sound to the 16 minutes..
Update: The audio ends on the half on the video.
When playing it as 32 minutes the audio ends at 16. > Audio has correct time.
When at 16, audio ends at 8. > video "correct" length, but audio half.
i want to adjust the framrate (footage) of the Video. The audio should be untouched.
    pfu.. premiere gets diffcult

  • Making FCP captured material available to someone else

    Hello,
I'm working on a project with someone who does not have FCP. Editing will be done in my little suite but it would be great if he could also review material at home at his leisure. We have over 70 hours of footage so making DVD copies from tape would be one difficult job. Is there some other way I could get him the material in a way that he could view it? All 70 hours have been downloaded to my computer. If I copied them to another hard drive is there any program that would allow him to view tapes captured through FCP? His is a PC.
    Thanks.

Umm, if you give him a firewire drive, I should think so, yes.
Could the files be accessed via a USB port?
Yes. BUt "access" and "use" are different results of using USB drives.
Also, I assume the drive I transfer my captured files to would also have to be 7200 RPM?
If you want it to be used realtime, at least 7200. Drive speed is only part of the issue. You won't be able to use a USB drive for media use but you can copy your files to and from a USB drive to and from a drive on a faster bus.

  • Reading FCP captured video on Quicktime Player with time code displayed?

I have someone who has to view my FCP captured video. He has an Apple but no FCP. Far as I can make it out he can see the material by using Quicktime. Problem is he needs to see timecode to reference his comments. Is it possible to make Quicktime display time code?
    John
p.s. could find no Quicktime forum in this Apple site

If they happen to have Quicktime 7.3 or higher, they can click onto the TIME window on the lower left and see a drop down menu. In this menu you will see TIMECODE listed. That will display the clips timecode.

  • FCP captures at 29.97 instead of 23.98

I just started shooting with the HVX 200 to tape last week, and I have a doozy of a problem on my hands. I shot a snowboarding competition in scene file F6 (filmcam). Recording setup is 480i/24P.
So I have 24p footage right? Well, for whatever reason, my Final Cut Pro 6.0.2 will not capture at that framerate. When the clip is done capturing, and I click on "Item Properties" it says that the "vid rate" is 29.97. And obviously I went into capture setup options and switched them to "DV-NTSC 24p (23.98)"
I do not have this same problem with the flash card stuff, nor do I have this problem with older 24p stuff I shot with my older camera. Other clips that I have captured at 23.98 read as such according to "item properties."
I am using Final Cut Pro 6.0.2
    Any ideas?

I can't give you teh exact steps to follow, but might be able able to help you understand what's going on. If you used the HVX 200, you are probably using Log&Transfer, unless you recorded to DV tape, in which case you will ineed be capturing.
Unless you use 24pN (native), your 23.98 video will actually be recorded at 29.97 with Panasonic's advanced pulldown. This pulldown is generally removed at capture or afterwards in FCP. Removing the pulldown allows the clips to play back as if they were 24p by removing the pulldown on the fly, However, the original 29.97 interlaced video is preserved in the source media. You will notice under these circumstances that the timcode on the 24p clips actually counts up to 29 frames and skips a frame every 3-4 frames.
By setting Log & Transfer or Capture to remove advacned pulldown, you should be able to work in 24p, but the clips will still have timecode that counts up to 29 frames each second, and may persist in beign identified as 29.97 depending on where you look. 24pN will actually record native 24p with no pulldown and 24 fps timecode, however this format is only possible when shooting HD - recording DV ntsc to tape with this camera will always create 29.97 video even iif it's using the advanced pulldown.
    Hope this helps -

  • Avid/FCP Capture Difference

Could someone familiar with Avid enlighten me as to what MC does or doesn't do when capturing that FCP does/doesn't do? Because I've captured the same footage twice, once in each app, and I get what appears to be a drastic gamma shift (see linked image). I'm capturing from an HDV tape to MXF 145 in MC, and native HDV in FCP. I'm running MC 3.1 and FCP6.0.4.

    Thanks,
    Zak

Perhaps I should just explain my goals here and you (or someone) can advise me as to the best method of attack. Here goes...
I'm from an FCP background. I shoot all of my material in HDV 1080i60. I capture native HDV, cut everything in FCP in an HDV sequence (with the render codec set to ProRes), and grade it with the 3-Way CC (but am looking to foray soon into Color). I then export the finished sequence to a ProRes file, bring it back into a new ProRes timeline, and apply Graeme Nattress' "Film Effects" filter, giving the footage a 24p look while maintaing the 29.97 framerate. But since my destination is the web, I don't need that 29.97 framerate, and so I export that sequence and bring it into Cinema Tools to remove the 3:2 pulldown, conforming the final video to a lovely 1920x1080, progressive, 23.98 fps, ProRes422 QuickTime video.
    BUT.
I am now looking to learn Avid. I'd love to cut my projects in MC as I follow online tutorials and read manuals, but I still need to have that finished 1920x1080, progressive, 23.98 fps QuickTime product. And since a) I'm looking to learn Color, and b) there are too many FCP plugins I use for grading/titles/effects, I need to eventually get back to FCP for finishing. So, short of buying Automatic Duck or MXF4QT... what are my options?
P.S. Yes, I listened to the latest Post Show regarding over-reliance on plugins. I have nothing to offer in my defense.

  • FCP capture problem with Blackmagic Intensity Pro

I just installed a Blackmagic Intensity Pro and I am having problems capturing in Final Cut Pro 6. I have a Sony VCR/DVD player with a HMDI out connection that works fine when connected to my TV. The video setting on the VCR/DVD are 720P. In FCP I have chosen the “Blackmagic HDTV Intensity Pro 720P 60 Uncompressed” capture/input setting. If I unplug the HDMI cable from the VCR/DVD and plug it back in I see the video for about 4 seconds and then just a gray screen. I have tried several video tapes all with the same results.
    Any suggestions?
    Dennis

I am having the same problem. I edit reels and was trying to use the higher quality HDMI input to capture video from my DVD player for client's video reels.
I could be mistake, but I do 'recall' hearing that you cannot record HDMI video (copyright issues) but only play back HDMI. We may be stuck using component.
Intensity Pro's website only mentions recording HDMI video from a camcorder with an HDMI output.
Maybe someone will clear this up for us with a definite answer. I have put a request in to Blackmagic support and will let you know what they say.

  • Opening FCP captured HDV file in windows

Hello. I'm trying to take a HDV file I captured in FCP and open it in either Adobe Premiere 1.5.1 or TMPGenc for encoding into VC-1/WMV HD AP (I'd like to edit it in Adobe Premiere), and then put it through say...Scenarist.
I have not been able to open it in QT for Windows at all no matter what. I want to keep it as an HDV file and not reencode due to file space issues. I have intalled the HDV plugin for Premiere 1.5.1 however it doesn't open in anything at all, indicating it's not a Adobe issue.
What i suspect is that it's not opening because it's in a proprietary QT wrapper that Apple will not let anyone access to build a decoder around. Once captured on a mac it's obviously not a .avi format file regardless of codec used.
If this is not possible a simple 'no it's not possible' would easily suffice. I'm off to get some sleep. TIA.

Probably best practice to start and finish the project on the same platform.
Most of the HDV video codecs used in FCP do not have Windows counterparts. Soon FCP Suite will be updated to version 6 (maybe NAB convention).
