Fcp capturing to system drive

I only have one drive set as a scratch disk in fcp....only one is showing in the settings window and is checked to capture everything. It's a 160 GB drive external with nothing on it. I've used it several times.
I captured about 50 or 60 GB of footage last night and all of it captured to my system drive! There's nothing on the external drive at all.
Any ideas?
thanks...nancy

update:
I moved all of the captured files to the correct scratch disk (the external drive) and reconnected them, and now it's capturing to that drive. So right now it's okay. But I'd still like to know why it all of a sudden captured to the system drive all on it's own. Was it something I did somewhere? I'd hate to think it is just going to choose the system drive whenever it wants to!!!

  • Cannot capture to external drive

been said before, by myself and others, here we go again.
    Canon XH-A1 , HDV 1080i footage.
    way back 6 months ago..
i couldnt capture to external disk on PBG4.
then i got a MBPro , still couldnt cap to external disk.
then i got a mac Pro , still cant cap to external disk.
at least it now captures to system drive,
at first it had unknown error, then just crashed on initializing log n capture,
reinstalled QT, trashed prefs, repaired permissions and kicked the dog.
    APPLE!!!! FIX IT!!!

in the PBG4 it was a PCM FW400 card in the slot.
    BUT,
if it will capture to the system drive then how would some supposed timecode problem prevent it capturing to an external drive?
so you reckon i should add PCIe FW card to the Mac Pro?
    blimey..!!
    also,
before changing to the MacPro FCP on MBP went crook,
adding a basic transition caused a crash,
re-opening the main sequence was gone,
finally found an autosave file in the trash!!
while i am here, other questions not answered elsewhere,
if i were to capture the camera's HDV tape info via component out into a Blackmagic card would that give a better overall quality?
    would this make editing easier?
is there any difference in doing this (via cap card) versus changing the HDV to ProRes or PhotoJPG in the sequence?
    Or,
would capturing from HDMI out (my camera doesn't have it, but just imagine),
into capture card, give a better quality image?
    also,
would a card help with rendering times?
    also,
since compressor is so slow and bad,
what is the best program to compress an excellent looking QT output file for writing a SD DVD?
so far the basic Visual Hub program does a better job much faster,
but still doesn't look very good on DVD,
    what other programs are there?

  • FCP PROJECT IN EXTERNAL DRIVES

    FCP 5
    Motion 2
    DVD Pro 4
I have made 4 FCP movies so that I will have plenty of memory I have purchased 4 external hard drives (LACIEs) each one is named LACIE 1, LACIE 2, LACIE 3, LACIE 4. I have logged and captured video from a camera to each of the LACIEs. The log and capture is good, I have all of the video files in the LACIEs) Each of the LACIEs has a different FCP File in it with a different name i.e. Dog Movie, Cat Movie, etc. Something went wrong. Now when I try to open a new FCP file from my desktop I get the message that a duplicate FCP serial number is already running on my network. I am the only user of the computer. There is no other FCP file open and/or running. So I opened LACIE1 and the FCP file in it Dog Movie and I got the (duplicate serial number is already running on my network) message BUT the FCP file opens and when it does I get a message that my "scratch disk" needs to be reset. Even though the FCP file appears to be open I cannot click on the Systems file or the Scratch Disk file to open them directly from the FCP file, I have to get the message. I am having the SAME problem trying to open ANY of my FOUR FCP files from all of my FOUR LACIEs.
I understand that each FCP file for each LACE has to have the "scratch disk" set to that LACIE. What I don't understand is that do I set the scratch disk to LACIE1 or the Dog Movie in LAÇIE1 or the Dog Movie work File in LACIE 1. What settings do the video capture, audio capture, video render and audio render which are the scratch disk settings have to be set to?
Also, I cannot open the system settings at all because the FCP appears not to be functioning even though the video is showing, then I get the message that "your settings have been changed do you want to save them? If I click yes, the FCP closes and I can't work on it; if I click no, the FCP closes and I can't work on it.
First of all I guess I have to get rid of the duplicate serial number FCP? How do I do that. I thought that by having my four FCP movies in separate external hard drives I would be keeping everything clean. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me. I am completely non-functional and can't work on any of my FCP files.

Is this an FCP 5.0 version and are you running it on an Intel Mac?
If so, the problem with the duplicate serial may be caused by that. 5.0 and Intel are not compatible and there are all sorts of odd quirks, even when it appears to work correctly at times. But this is one that I never heard of before.
That problem only usually crops up when you have the software running on two or more computers on a local network.
To your Scratch Disks; as David has already pointed out, you can have up to twelve of them. What will usually happen is the first one fills up then FCP moves on to the next one. So your other three will be sitting around doing nothing for a while.
The system I use also involves 5 drives but they get used for different things:
The system drive holds my project files in my user space.
Video 1 and 2 are for capturing -they are setup in a software RAID arrangement. Video 3 holds Render Files and stuff. Video 4 is for Mastering the finished product. This way no drive is trying to both read and write at the same time.

  • Cant capture to specific drive

Ok I have a 1T external drive i am trying to capture to and every time I start capturing it last about 2 sec then says end of tape encountered. So I hooked my 500g external drive up and it captures to it no problem at all. What could be causing this ? I had captured to this drive just a day ago and it worked perfect. What could be messing up this drive?

do I capture it the same way in final cut pro as I would if it was going through my computer ?
Yes. All you need to do is make sure that you set the drive as your scratch disk in FCP's *System Settings* menu.
It might help if you also change the *Capture Settings > Device Control* to FireWire Basic.
You can add a FireWire PCI card to your Mac Pro to create a second bus for $30-40.
The Mac Pro has 4 hard drive bays which you can filll with drives just for capturing and storing video. This will be faster than any FireWire solution and reasonably cheap to implement.
A 1TB internal can be bought for around $100 these days.

  • OFF TOPIC: Mac Pro fried 2 system drives.

Sorry to post this in this forum but I find the other forums to be fairly unhelpful.
My Mac Pro tower fried my system drive (or it died) so I broke out my backup system drive. After that failed to mount I restarted using the option key. I found the system drive but after another restart, it too failed to mount. Disk Warrior says the drive is un-repairable now (the first drive can not be found by DW).
Anyone have any experience with this kind of problem or know what could possibly cause this? My DVD drive (the stock superdrive) is naffed as well as has not been able to play a DVD properly in ages. Not sure if it's related but when I would insert a DVD the DVD player window would be distorted and the image scrambled, then my computer would freeze.
Again, sorry to post this here but I always find FCP users more knowledgeable and helpful.

I sent the drive to my buddy's place. He ran the check. He also made me a clone of his system drive, which I will clone again using my laptop (the DVD on that was crushed on a trip) and try trouble shooting with that. I'm worried it's a power supply problem that is killing my drives.

  • How do I locate and delete items on system drive?

    I have a 150 gig system drive.
My system drive is down to 6gigs.
I want to determine what is taking up so much space.
I am installed and I'm running; FCS2, Photoshop, Illustrator, Word- and very little else.
My FCP Media is kept on external drives.
I'm not sure why I am down to 6gigs?
How can I determine what is sucking up space?

Hi! WhatSize is a free app to show the folder that are taking up the most space but there's not a Leopard version yet. Have you let the computer run 24/7 to clear the temp files. Usually it's the pict and music files that take up all the space. Tom

  • Is there any value in partitioning the system drive?

I've always set up my computer with a system drive for the OS and Programs and then a RAID 0 for video capture.
However, I found this link which suggests that it might be better to partition the "system drive" for better performance.  Does anybody partition, their system drive?
    http://partition.radified.com/partitioning_2.htm
    John Rich

    NO !!!
One physical drive has one set of read/write heads
When you partition a drive, that one set of read/write heads now has to do double the work to navigate two areas
The only time you might want to partition a drive is to have a dual boot... and then each OS is completely separate from the other and that set of read/write heads is still only working in one space

  • Time Machine - backup System Drive and External Drive to 2 partitions? Help

Hi all, I'm a bit confused with Time Machine. Here's the situation:
I have my internal system drive (500GB) and an external FW drive (500GB). I have a backup drive (1TB). I would like to partition my backup drive and have Time Machine backup my system drive to partition 1, my external drive to partition 2. The Time Machine interface does not make it obvious how to do this. Is it possible? How?
    Thanks!
    js

    js,
No, Time Machine will not do this. While it can back up both volumes, it will do so by creating two folders within the "Backups.backupdb" folder, each named for one of the volumes being backed up. In other words, it backs up both volumes to the single volume.
You'll need to carefully consider whether or not it makes sense to use it with both. Obviously, the backup drive (1 TB) will need to have just one partition to contain everything. Additionally, Time Machine really needs at least twice the amount of space required for the initial backup. Closer to 3X, if it can be managed. This is to insure that it will always have enough room to "do its thing" with subsequent backups. In order to evaluate this, you'll need to add the amount of data being stored on both source volumes, then estimate how much that data might change and/or grow over time. I would recommend strongly against using Time Machine to backup both volumes if you think the total might ever exceed 500 GBs (that is, the total used on the two source volumes). Even if you think it might come close, this would tend to recommend against using Time Machine.
If you really have the kind of data that fills up 2 500 GB drives, especially if one of those is your boot drive, you should seriously consider some hefty file management. This doesn't rule out Time Machine; quite the contrary. However, you'll need to separate your data into "live" data, and that which can be "archived." Your installation of OS X, all your applications, and your day-to-day "user files" would obviously be considered "live." To this total, you would add any files on which you might be working, in various "projects."
Anything and everything else is a strong candidate for "archival." These files would be best stored separately, where their need for constantly updated redundancy is eliminated. If they can be archived to DVDs, all the better (I would want to do this in addition to storing them on a relatively static and rarely used external drive).
If you adopt such a routine, you should realistically be able to whittle down your boot volume to no more than 100 GBs. Perhaps a little more if you are using Pro apps such as the CS suite, FCP, etc., along with their attendant template libraries.
Under such a scenario, Time Machine would work very well in backing up your boot volume and any external drive you would use for additional "live" project files. Everything else could be stored on an external drive that you would use only when you need access to the old archived data, and it could be made redundant by you, manually, as and when you see fit. Since this data would be and remain "static" in nature, it would not need regular and recurrent backup.

Go to your application folder click on FCP and get info. How big is is the FCP application?
A few months ago I notice that my FCP application was over 1.5 gig in size, it should be around 413 MB. Somehow, some of my render files were being written to the FCP application. To fix this I right clicked on the FCP application and open the Show Package Content. In the MacOS folder there are two folder called Render Files and Audio Render Files. There was over 1 gig of old render files in both of those folders... Deleted the content of the folders and had no problems since. I didn't delete the folders themselves.
I did check my backup copy of my OS/Final Cut Pro before deleting anything. I wanted to make sure that the package content of FCP has those folders to begin with, sure enough it does. Why it wrote to those folders I have no idea. Must be a FCP thing for one reason or another.

  • Making FCP captured material available to someone else

    Hello,
I'm working on a project with someone who does not have FCP. Editing will be done in my little suite but it would be great if he could also review material at home at his leisure. We have over 70 hours of footage so making DVD copies from tape would be one difficult job. Is there some other way I could get him the material in a way that he could view it? All 70 hours have been downloaded to my computer. If I copied them to another hard drive is there any program that would allow him to view tapes captured through FCP? His is a PC.
    Thanks.

Umm, if you give him a firewire drive, I should think so, yes.
Could the files be accessed via a USB port?
Yes. BUt "access" and "use" are different results of using USB drives.
Also, I assume the drive I transfer my captured files to would also have to be 7200 RPM?
If you want it to be used realtime, at least 7200. Drive speed is only part of the issue. You won't be able to use a USB drive for media use but you can copy your files to and from a USB drive to and from a drive on a faster bus.

  • How to install Creative Cloud on any drive other than my System drive...

You are now chatting with 'Bhagawan'
Bhagawan: Hello. Welcome to Adobe Technical Support.
    Bhagawan: Hi Steve
Steve: It appears CC installs on my system drive without asking me. The way I manage my system - this is not acceptable. So, how do I install on the drive I install all my other apps?
Bhagawan: I understand that you want to install Creative Cloud desktop app. Am I correct?
Steve: On a particular drive - not my system drive.
    Steve: CC, Photoshop, etc.
Bhagawan: I will be glad to check and help you with this issue.
Bhagawan: Steve, creative cloud desktop app can be install only on C drive, but other apps you select for other drive.
Steve: My C: drive is dedicated to my OS only.
Steve: It is a special drive that will not work for very long if software companies put their programs on it till it fills up and then everything stops.
Steve: Didn't Adobe think of this?
Steve: I have one computer that only has a few MBs left of C:. What do I do on that computer?
    Steve: "left on C:"
    Bhagawan: Give me a minute.
    Bhagawan: Thank you.
Bhagawan: Steve, I'm really sorry, creative cloud desktop app will be installed on C Drive, since the operating system is installed, but other Creative Cloud apps can be installed other Drive and depends on file size.

I had the same problem and finally solved it.
It is "funny" that CC doesn't ask you where to install apps. Or better to say, it asks you but doesn't care. In Creative Cloud desktop app/Preferences there is option to choose where you want apps to be installed, but they are still installed in C:/Program Files/....
How to install apps on secondary drive in just 3 steps:
    1. Go to page Adobe CC 2014 Direct Download Links – Creative Cloud 2014 Release | ProDesignTools and download all apps that you will need.
    2. Once downloaded, install it. During installation you will be asked where you want app to be installed (just like in any other "normal" installation)
    3. Be happy
    Hope I helped

  • How can I get "all my files" to recognize files in a non system drive?

I use a Mac Pro with four internal drives, OSX 9.2. My system drive is an SSD so I keep user files on another drive in an adjacent bay.
Files in my non-system disc are not displayed in the "all my files" finder view. If I copy a file from the system disc to my user disc, the copy is not recognized, and when I trash the original, of course, there is no reference to either. If I search, spotlight finds it. This behavior seems to apply to all files and is regardless of anything selected in the sidebar before "all my files". I have not marked any files, folders or drives as private. I presume I must have a set a pref wrong. I would really appreciate any advice.
    Thank you.

To change the program that .indd files default to when opened in OSX, right click on the .indd file > Open With > Other.
Then navigate to the version of InDesign that you want to open them with (I have CS6 installed but its the same for CS5). Make sure you have "Always Open With" selected.

  • TrueCrypt 6.2 system drive encryption hangs system sometimes a day

    Hi,
I use truecrypt for years with xp and vista - last with Vista and T500, a few weeks ago I installed windows 7 x64 rtm. Every thing works fine and so I checked step by step my usual installed apps and tools.
I see win7 is not supported by truecrypt but seems to work fine. But sometimes (one or two a hour) my system hangs for about 10 to 40 seconds. So I decided to go step by step backwards and removed installed tools.
Removing TC solved my problem. Has anybody seen the same (TC6.2 on Win7 ult. x64 using Lenovo T500 with Intel SSD)?
    best regards
      Ronny

I have exactly the same problem, but with a HP Elitebook 2530p
    TrueCrypt 7.0a
    Windows 7 x64
SSD drive, but had the same problem on my traditional HDD.
The interval is somewhat longer for me, maybe a few times a day.
And, just as you discovered, removing truecrypt system encryption resolves the issue. Wonder if it's an issue with just the system drive encryption thingy, or it affects all systems having encrypted volumes opened?

requirement e.g. out of the 20 gb, how much is needed on the system drive.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Exact space required will vary widely based on installation components chosen and what you may have already installed on your system.
And When you install your VS in another Drive and run the VS installer, you can see system requirement in installation screen.
Because my work computer only have C Drive, I test the VS2012 professional installation in my home computer E drive. The Screen below:
I think the system requirement can also display when you install  VS 2013.
