FCP clip time remapping / speed ramping question re realtime after changes?
Hello All,
My first post here! I tried searches for this topic but didn't find....
I wasted hours today messing with the keyframe editor to try and ramp parts of a single clip... first time using this feature and couldn't follow the manual! way too difficult to grasp without fluency in 'techygeekconfusic' lingo. Anyway, I don't think the topic was covered from what I read in my version of the manual.
So I went straight for the keyframe editor graphic display under the clip in timeframe and put in a few points with the pen tool (using time graph blue line) and seemed to be going great until I realised that the segments in the single clip (ten minutes long) that I was adjusting were affecting what came after - ie slowing down the remainder of the clip. And that was all I could get from my manual that this happened without any explanation about stopping it happen by letting the outpoint of the clip readjust automatically for the changes made to that part of clip so that altered clip would be shorter in timeline...
I then tried again from the start but noting the minus time on pentool arrow when I slid each keyframe point back and subtracting it from the duration in motion tab and that seemed to work for a while...
but God bless my little brain! what I really wanted to happen - for the blasted thing to readjust itself automatically after I had adjusted a segment of the clip so that the remaining non-adjusted part would play in realtime with a new shorter outpoint in the sequence timeline - just couldn't be realised in my little brain or in the 'user friendly' control panels of FCP.
I tried to get hold of the 'bezier' point at the end of clip and drag forward at the same rate as each change but could'nt get hold of it! I tried to put two points with pen tool at same time but couldn't isolate them from one another to create four points for adjustment without having still frames between.. blah blah.. I tried to get snapping to the pen tool points for further control but couldn't... duh!
Please! how do you do it! obviously I have limited intelligence but I need to do this now. I want to adjust the 10 minute clip (DVCproHD 720p24N format - not that this should matter as my sequence settings are same) adjust the clip at maybe 10 different places so that it ramps in speed to cover up some boring areas and then back to normal speed after the changes - not back to some slo mo **! speed.
I tried cutting with the razor tool to isolate and that didn't work either and other analogue brain type stuff ok I know you are laughing at me now but please help?!! I'm pretty new to this stuff, give me the old reliable Steenbeck and a few real bins and strips of film hanging on clothes pegs and I'll be ok...
Help will be most gratefully appreciated!!!!!!!!

Andy did a very good job explaining the underlying problem with the time remap tool.
The key thing to remember is the first and last frame are fixed in time. If you speed up the clip, time after that keyframe will have to slow down to compensate. Imagine the clip is a rubber band that has been cut so that it is a long string-like form. Now imagine anchoring each end of it with a push pin to a board. If you grab a point on the band and pull it toward one of the pins, the part of the band on the side you are pulling away from the anchor will stretch (run slower) and the side you are pulling toward will bunch up (run faster). But, when all is done, the start and end will still be at the fixed points.
The way I've worked through this is to make a general guesstimate of how long the clip will be once all the ramping is complete. For example, I want the clip to start at normal (100%) speed and ramp up to 300% and back down to 100%. I might start with a clip having a constant speed of 200% and then change it to variable and play with it. The key concept is if you can get the overall LENGTH to where it should be, the rest works out fine.
I have repeatedly asked in the FEEDBACK/New Features page that they add a toggle to the speed/time remap tools. This toggle should allow you decide whether the playback TIME for the clip should be fixed or flexible.
For example, if you were working with a 4 second clip and wish to slow it down by 50% -
If 'Maintain Time' is toggled ON, when you decrease the speed of clip by 50% - the clip will still play for 4 sec (but will show only half the total frames).
If the toggle is OFF, the 4 sec clip will now play for 8 sec and will display all the frames.
Where this concept becomes really powerful is when it's applied to time remap. If you have 'Maintain time' toggled OFF, as you adjust speed, the end point of the clip will float in time. If you increase the speed, the overall time of the clip will shrink. If you slow it down, the end point moves out in time.
We need to keep asking ...

Red numbers top left of a clip - time remapping?
when i move a clip backwards or forwards it displays on the top left hand corner of the clip red numbers, which say plus or minus numbers depending on if i move it backwards or forwards. I think it is time remapping, how do i turn this off and return my clips to normal ? thanks
The video and audio are not unlinked however when i move the video it seperates from the audioIt sounds like you may have unchecked the Link Selection button. Make sure to check it and you should be good to go. See image below.

Unless I'm missing something there seems to be no facility in Audition CS6 to ramp the speed of audio either up or down, say for instance to match a video where things speed up by increments. Am I wrong?
CS6 doesn't have any form of speed ramping as far as I know.
The next version (Audition CC) has the Pitch Bender feature back--really useful in sound design terms but I'm not sure that's exactly what you want. -

How to apply Time Remap to multiple clips simultaneously
Quite often after trimming many different clips for a wedding video I will then want the majority of them slowed down to a 50% speed. I know how to apply the Time Remap Speed % change in the Motion Tab, but have yet to figure out how to make the change to multiple clips simultaneously.
Thanks for your help!You can apply a speed change from one clip to multiple clips by copying the first one, then pasting attributes (option + V, then select speed from the list) onto as many clips as you have selected.
Just be aware that this will ripple your timeline by extending all of your clips. FCP keeps the original out point of the source clip, not the out point of each cut on the T/L.

Removing time-remapping deletes clip
I'm doing something wrong here, and I know it's probably a very simple mistake.
I implemented a time-remapping segment in a clip in CS6. Then, I attempted to remove it using the following instructions from the site:
Remove the Time Remapping effect
You cannot toggle the Time Remapping effect on and off like other effects. Enabling and disabling Time Remapping affects the duration of the clip instance in a Timeline. In effect, Time Remapping performs an edit. However, you can use the Toggle Animation control in the Effect Controls panel.
Click the Effect Controls tab to make this panel active.
Click the triangle next to Time Remapping to open it.
Click the Toggle Animation button next to the word Speed, to set it to the off position. This action deletes any existing speed keyframes, and disables Time Remapping for the selected clip.
The problem: instead of just deleting the speed keyframes, when I clicked "okay" it deleted the entire clip from the timeline.
What am I doing wrong?
KathleenThanks for the quick response. I just repeated my steps exactly:
Loaded sequence with single video clip in Timeline track Video 1.
Right-clicked on clip to display - Show Clip Keyframes/Time Remapping/Speed
Added two keyframes to the clip.
Lowered the yellow control line to 40% between the two keyframes
Stretched the right side of first keyframe and left side of second keyframe to create more of a transition in speed.
Reviewed the clip to see the effect. And then went to remove it.
Highlighted the clip in Timeline
Went to Effects Control panel and clicked on the “stopwatch” next to Speed to toggle it.
Got a prompt: “This action will delete existing keyframes. Do you want to continue?”
Clicked OK and the entire clip disappeared from the sequence.
Any help appreciated.

Time remapping vs time stretch tools
What is the difference? Both can do the same thing it seems, apart from the fact that time remap can ramp in and out. Does one of them make interpolated frames?
jloudon
Later today I will revisit your thread with more detailed comments on your question.
But for now, your following comment caught my attention, that is
Both can do the same thing it seems, apart from the fact that time remap can ramp in and out
Premiere Elements Time Stretch Tool can also be used for "ramped slow motion". Have you seen the YouTube video tutorial on the subject?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di9N0AnBpn0
But I would make the distinction in my comments to follow about the easy of use as well as the absolute can and cannot do aspects involved.
To be continued.

Why can't Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014 Time remap Audio and Video together?
In case you didn't notice, my question is WHY. I don't know why Premiere Pro can't do this. From what I understand at the moment, the only way to time-remap audio in any way shape or form using Adobe software is through Adobe After Effects, which my computer has absolutely no chance of running ever. I know how to do regular stretching of audio in both Audition and Premiere Pro, but apparently I can't time-remap audio using either of these programs.
So why can't Adobe Premiere Pro time remap audio along with the video? What's the reason that it can't? It's a massive disappointment and would be very impressive to see accomplished in the future. If it's possible to time remap audio and video together in After Effects, that's great and all, except for the fact that I can't use that program. Why can't it be done in Premiere Pro and will it ever be possible in Premiere Pro?
Also, will time remapping audio become possible in Audition someday?That sounds like a great idea. File a Feature Request:

How to delete old schedule time of process chain after changing
I am try to change the schedule time of process chain on production but after changed the old schedule is still working (i.e. every day on 7 am I want change it to 6 am only) ,one process scheduled two time.
I want only last changed. How to remove the older one?
Thankshmm wierd...one more thing check if this process chain get trigger by anyother process chain by some abap program or any.
Check the table rspcchain to know if it has any meta chain or not. IF not follow the below steps :
make your process chain trigger based upon the event. Follow the below step.
1.SM64 ---> Create event -
> come to your process chain -> maintain the start variant -> event base---> give that event name here.Now we will be require to create the job which will trigger this event for this.
2.Let us take the below PC as example;
ZL_TD_HCM_004 -- This PC is running after event u2018START_ZL_TD_HCM_004u2019
3.Go to T Code: SM36 Here we define the Background job which will be available in SM37 after saving it.
4.It will ask for ABAP Program to be entered. Give it as Z_START_BI_EVENT and Select Variant from the list. (Based on Process chain, you can select it)
5.Then select Start Conditions and give the start time of process chain. and select periodicity.
6.Save the newly created job in SM36.It will be now available in SM37.
This should solve your problem now .. have fingure crossed
Thanks,
Deepak

FCP XML to Flint - Problems with Time Remap
My Flint artist and I have had some problems with the XML Export and Import that we cannot figure out. The XMLs from FCP sequences that have variable speed Time Remaps applied show up on the Flint with those particular clips with the wrong in/out points in both the source and record times. Also, the speed ramp info doesn't show up properly.
We have followed the Flint manual to a T on importing correctly. Anyone encountered this or know a solution? Especially why it's throwing off the in points. It screws the whole timeline when that happens.
Thanks in advance.The TimerEvent target is a flash.utils.Timer object and does
not contain a reference to your lblTimeUntil label.
Recode
trace("Seconds Left" + evt.target.lblTimeUntil.text);
to
trace("Seconds Left" + lblTimeUntil.text);
and you will not blow up anymore.
This code will display the count up till refresh.
public function onTick(evt:TimerEvent):void {
var minuteTimer:Timer = evt.target as Timer;
lblTimeUntil.text = minuteTimer.currentCount.toString(); -
I'm still using FCP 4.5 (yeah, I know....Upgrade)
Here's my question. I have a clip of a dog running towards the camera. It's around eight seconds long. The dog is jumping around it's owner (excitedly) for the first couple of seconds and then takes off towards the camera. At the point that the dog takes off, I want to slow the frame rate down rather quickly, but not abruptly. I'm thinking that my speed change would be from 100% to 25% in about two seconds. My desire then is to run the video through the rest of duration at 25% speed at whatever duration the adjusted/extended time would be. In essence, I'm making a relatively constant speed change with just a small variable speed change in a certain part of the clip.
I can't seem to get FCP to extend my duration. When ever I make changes in the time remapping section of the motion tab (in viewer) it seems to "chop" off the remaining video based on my speed changes.
I've tried slicing the clips and remapping them independently, but it's too difficult and I'm sure there is an easier way.
I'll diagram it out if I can...
Start----2 sec (spd. 100% to 25% in two sec.) --4 secs (spd chg, done)-------run to completion what ever length is ----->
Anyone know how to do what I'm talking about?K,
Hmm, I tired to export/import and it doesn't seem to work based on what I'm trying to do. What's happening is that FCP is "cutting off" the remaining part of the clip if it's slowed down in the time remap portion of the "motion" tab for the clip that I'm using.
I'll refer to the time line and the speed indicators in clip. For instance the clip is 8 seconds long raw (from footage). I want to start my slow down beginning at 2 seconds with a 2 second speed transition from 100% to 25%. At 4 seconds the speed change should be completed. So far so good....But this is where I have problems. In essence, If I were using the time remap tool on the timeline then what I want is to stretch from 4 seconds to the end (25% speed) and keep everything before that at 100% (untouched). So ...allow the rest of the clip (now longer because of the slo-mo) to run to the end of my intended OUT point which now would play at 25 percent of the remaining 4 seconds. Placing the smooth handles in when the speed change is satisfactory. Unfortunately FCP cuts the clip and I only get around 3 seconds because it's confining the entire thing down to the original 8 seconds. It would not allow me to extend the "cut" portion unless I lengthened the entire clip. That won't work because the entire clip ends up slowed down to an unknown amount.
What I'm looking for is to get FCP to either extend the time remapped portion based on my changes or allow me to manually extend the "chopped" off portion to the end without having to do a lot of messy calculations as to what the total would be based on the speed changes.
I guess it goes with out saying that I'm still learning....
Thanks again,

Question About Time Remapping - Premiere Pro CC 2014
I have a question in regards the the Time Remapping feature. When I use it to gradually speed a clip up, the audio obviously doesn't change with the video. I was looking to see if there is a way to do the same change to the audio, within Pr Pro or Audition. I spent some time looking in the programs and also Googling yesterday, but didn't find much. Does anyone know a way to do this? I did try using Audacity (Sliding time Scale/Pitch Shift), but the way Audacity processes the audio is quite a bit different than Pr Pro/Au.
Thank you,
Benjamin

To "widen" time remap clip - possible?
Since i'm new commer from APPro i wonder if it's possible to move the out point of the clip when u make time remap? In APPro (Premiere) it's possible to widen the clip up to the phisical OUT point of the captured footage. In FCP i can't do that
Anton
I think you're not getting an answer because your question is a little difficult to understand for anyone who hasn't seen how PP handles it ... I think you're asking if you can simply pull the end of a clip to stretch (slow it down) or shorten (speed it up) it in time? If thats what you're asking then the answer is no, not with the Time Remap tool, but its easily worked around using "Fit to Fill" (Shift-F11). Use "F" to match frame into the Viewer, remark the are you want to fill in the timeline, then press Shift F11.
Hope it helps

Any way to STOP Time Remap from rippling clips?
Hi Guys,
I'm editing a music clip right now that requires a fair bit of slow-mo and fast-mo and I am using Final Cut's very capable time remapping tool to acheive this. Please bear in mind that I am using the "Constant Speed" option.
One thing that really spoils my day is the way re-mapped clips ripple through the rest of the sequence, moving all the rest of my clips up or down. As you can imagine, I've got everything going to the beat and when I remap a clip it screws up my timing.
Is there any way to prevent this from happening?
All the best
IainOne thing that really spoils my day is the way re-mapped clips ripple through the rest of the sequence, moving all the rest of my clips up or down. < </div>
I've been kvetching about this silly design decision for years. This is the only extend-length-of-clip function FCP treats as an insert. It's lame. Or, if it's not lame, at least the operation should be user-switchable.
Time changes are handled much more efficiently in every other NLE. The workarounds described here are all kluges and require many additional steps. But the workarounds work and you get used to them. My method is to have a special sequence open dedicated to only time remapping and speed changes. Bouncing in and out of the TIMING sequence ain't that tough but it sure bugs me.
