FCP Crashing and Hard computer Shut down

I hope that someone might be able to give me an explanation as to what his might be. If I am editing and I scrub forward and then BACKWARDS my computer CRASHES. The whole stinking think goes hard crash. This happens very frequently. At first I thought it might be the power supply, but it never crashes in other apps. Only in FCP and only when I am scrubbing or previewing and then move the timeline arrow to the front of a clip. Saving my project after every edit and or every 10 seconds is really getting old. Is there any other thought as to what this might be?

I think I have narrowed it down to the Video preview. Roland from T.O. suggested that it could be a firewire cable issue. I know that sound weird...but I open up FCP without my DV deck connected through the computer and nop video preview. I scrubbed the **** out of the project and really made it work. Viola...no crashes. So today I will try a new cable....if it still crashes with the preview.....that would mean it is a bad Firewire port. (I would assume)
Any thoughts

  • Help Please B/W G3 crashed and will not shut down...

My old back-up B/W G3 crashed and will not shut down. After the crash my wife who was working on it attempted to restart it and all that happens is the gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinning dial (not multi-colored wheel). This actually happened a few months ago and I've just been using my MacBook instead, but realized there was still some info that we needed to retrieve from the G3.
The only way to shut down is to unplug. I replaced the Lithium 3.6V battery but that didn't help. I tried holding down the apple, command + P, R keys for the 3 chimes and that didn't solve it. I have no clue what else to do. I would love to somehow be able to at least download the info from the hard drive(s), but have no idea if the drives may be corrupted.
Please help with any advice. Many thanks.

You can also try two other methods of Disk repair, without the Install CD:
    • Boot up while holding down the Shift key at startup. This forces the Mac to check and Repair its Hard Drive as it boots up, and does not load most extensions. This is called Safe Boot or Safe Mode.
    • Boot up Darwin in Single-user mode by Holding down Command and S at startup. When the messages stop scrolling, and it appears to prompt you for input, type:
    fsck -fy
which forces it to check the disk, even if it is journaled.

I was working on a word document  and the computer shut down suddenly. I got a grey screen with a message that your computer shut down because of a proble. It was written in various languages. It asked me to press any key to restart. I tried to restart it but the wheel just kept going on and on. So I shut it down and I tried to restart it. But I still keepgetting the wheel under the apple symbol and nothing else.

  • Premiere Pro CC crashes and has to shut down, doesn't save Sequences?

I have recently bought Create Cloud and with it installed Premiere Pro CC and other programs such as Photoshop, Lightroom, etc... I was editing a movie a few days ago and then a message popped up saying that Premiere Pro CC has crashed and is forced to now shut down (it does it automatically). When opened again the sequences are not saved, same with the imports, and this kept happening at least 3-4 more times. So I uninstalled Premiere Pro CC and installed it again, but it just happened again. What do I do?

  • Can I get back an email I was composing after losing power and the computer shut down?

While composing a long, complicated email, the warning came on that I was about to lose battery power. By the time I plugged my computer in to the electrical outlet, it had already shut down. I powered it up and checked my email drafts folder, but the email was not there. Is there any way I can get it back?

    Hi,
Thanks. Doesn't a Mac save your draft automatically from time to time while you're typing it? On my PC I could click on "Save" occasionally and save what I was working on until that point, but on my Mac Book Pro I've never figured out how to do that. My Mac seemed to do it automatically. For example, if for some reason I stopped working on an email but came back to it later, it was in my Drafts folder. However, this time my Mac shut down while I was composing my email and now I can't find it. It's nowhere to be found?!

  • Hey!! i just moved from miami to vienna...i conected my desktop with a big convertor...to 220...and my computer shut down after one hour!!

    Hello!!
I just relocated to Austria,Vienna...and I just recieved my moving from miami.
I just conecyed my computer with a convertor for electricity from 110... to 220 (europe)
it was working for one hour...and sudenly..it shut down completly!!
    what can I do?
    thank you!!
    joanna

Joanna...You don't need and shouldn't use a convertor. If you look at the message I sent you back in June I suggested getting an adapter which only allows the plug to fit in the wall. someone else made the same suggestion.
I'm not sure why you bought a convertor. It's been six months since i sent the message and I don't know if you have been using the computer in Italy or why it is now not working, as I used mine in both Italy and Vienna.
You can buy an adaptor at any electirc store or at Saturn, a large store on Mariahilferstrasse fairly cheaply.
If you do get an adaptor and it still doesn't work, there are a few resellers in Vienna, but no Apple owned store. It's too small a market.
There are a couple of MacShark stores, one at the foot of Mariahilferstrasse near the Kunsthistoriches Museum. I There is also a very good store, honest and a good reputation called Digital Store at Stiftgasse 21, in the 7th district, not too far off of Mariahilferstrasse.
Since they are not Apple stores, you have to pay for almost anything they do, including just opening it up and checking it out so get an estimate before you have them do anything.
Good luck, but try an adaptor first.

  • Since upgrading to 6.0 this morning my internet is very slow, Firefox keeps crashing and will not shut down.

See the above question. Is my operating system 10.6.8 unable to handle the new upgrade and should I go back to the previous Firefox and Adobe Flash I was previously using. I never had these problems before and now every time I use my internet today, I am having major problems.

about:crashes only lists crashes that you have reported using the [[Mozilla Crash Reporter]] which comes up after a crash. Because there are so many possible reasons for a crash, getting the crash ID really helps volunteers find the cause quicker.
That doesn't mean we can't help without a crash id. :-) No crashes here, but I'm also on Snow Leopard and using Firefox 3.6.6.
Are you using Firefox 3.6.6? The most common cause of crashes on Mac is the Flash plugin. Are you using the latest version of Flash? You can check at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
Do you remember any specific circumstances about when the crash occurred? What sites you were on?

  • Computer shuts down with charge on battery and no warning

without warning and plenty of charge on my battery my mac book pro shuts down? if it just sits there in sleep unplugged it seems to run fine, but if its unplugged and i try to use it (with a charged battery) it shuts down with out warning. started about 3 months ago. Is the battery just old..?

It is almost certainly a sign that your battery is dying, timskins.
The problem is that when batteries deteriorate their internal resistance increases and they are no longer able to deliver power when it is demanded, even though they still have the ability to store it. They may chug along providing low power for quite a bit longer, but when your computer suddenly needs a bit more (because of increased CPU or GPU demand, or the HD spinning up or whatever) it is unable to provide it and the computer shuts down unexpectedly.
Think of it like driving a car with a bad fuel pump. Your car is driving along a highway with a full tank of gas. Its running smoothly enough. You put your foot down to accelerate up a hill or overtake a another vehicle and the engine dies because the fuel pump can't meet the greater demand for gas. The tank is still pretty full but the fuel can't be pumped in fast enough to keep it running in a high demand situation, so it shuts down.
See the section dealing with increasing internal resistance in batteries at http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-31.htm for more about such things, or http://www.buchmann.ca/Chap9-page1.asp for a longer, more technical, account.
Once this starts happening the only options are to get a new battery or to avoid any work that makes much demand on power (like visiting a "Flash" based website or, when it gets bad enough, even spinning up the HD from a stationary situation.) Unfortunately even with light use the battery will soon reach a point where the regular peaks of CPU and HD use will become too much for it and you will suffer more and more unexpected shutdowns until the battery is replaced.
My suggestion would be that you take the battery to an AASP or Apple Store, where they can quickly "stress test" the battery for you to make certain that in your case this is, indeed, the problem.

  • Iphoto has been importing photos for over an hour and i can't get it to stop. can't stop importing and can't shut down computer.

iphoto has been importing photos for over n hour and I can't get it to stop.  Can't get out of iphoto and can't shut down computer.

iPhoto works best when the source (Pictures folder) is on a different disk drive than the iPhoto Library is on.
And you need to have enough free disk space to work with, the faster the better.
Also, do not keep your media folders and those in your home folder on the same drive as the system, also another bottleneck.
Until or unless you have everything on 1400MB/sec SSD PCIe controller, you want
    System boot drive
Media and data folders and such
    scratch
    backup
    etc
I put iPhoto on an SSD off an SSD PCIe Sonnet Tempo card
If you stop- it, you will need to trash the Library it was creating.
Reading and writing to/from the same hard drive will be slow.
You don't mention which Mac, or how large you are trying to import etc
Also the support page and link to the iPhoto Commuinity is off this page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphoto
Take a look in Activity Monitor. See what the % being used for iPhoto, how many pageouts, how much free space on the various disk drives, and how much RAM do you have installed?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Super slow computer and doesn't shut down

    Hi all,
I think it is only fair to come and share with you an issue I had with my 2011 Mac Pro runing on Lion 10.7.3. The computer is just a few months old. For a month or so I started experiencing a SUPER slow computer. To illustrate, it would slow down suddently and would take 10 minutes to give me the About this Mac info. After hard shutdown it would get normal again for a few hours. This happen usually while using Google Docs, and after trouble shooting and not getting anywhere... reseting power management (SMC), etc... Just to test I de-activated the Kaspersky Anti-Virus software for Mac, thinking that it may have been the cause while working on Google Docs... and it work!
One problem solve... but I run into another one. The computer would freeze after shuting down, and the screen would be gray with the little turning wheel... Every day from there I had to do the hard shutdown... not healthy for the computer of course... After re-installing the operating system, going back and forth with Apple Care Specialist (very helpful and nice people), and spending hours figuring the problem out... I decided to un-install completely the Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Mac, but downloading the 'free' version and using the un-installer from the package... After this my computer shuts down everytime and goes to sleep normally. This saved me from formatting the HD and doing a clean installation of Lion - which was my next step if things didn't work according to Mac support.
I still have the Kaspersky for the parallels side of the computer and that doesn't seem to be an issue. I hope this saves some people the trouble, the frustration and the MANY hours of trying to figure it what's wrong with the computer.
I have read many blogs, and articles and none of them pointed at Kaspersky... I found issues with Parallels, Office for Mac, etc but I guess after the last Lion update thing went south with the anti virus software... and of course my computer! Now we're all happy again!

Something is causing it to not shut down, more than likely some process that refuses to quit. Do all of your applications quit when you shut down or do you have to force quit any of them? You also should look in your console messages and see if perhaps there is a clue there.
When you ran Disk Utility did you get the message that the "drive appears to be o.k." or did you get some other message?
Do you have problems with freezing in general or just when you are installing applications? When you say freezes do you mean you get the spinning beachball or does it freeze and you can't do anything including moving the cursor?
Do you use a lot of widgets in Dashboard? Sometimes they will cause problems. If you have loaded any of them recently you might try removing them and see if that helps with the shutdown issue.
