FCP Deleting Render Files

I'm currently running the latest version of FCP (7.0.1). However, it appears that whenever I close/quit FCP, it deletes all my recent render files. Is there some type of setting or known bug that would cause FCP to delete render files?
Thanks!
lance

Hi Tom,
I've returned to this project, and I'm still having similar problems - once I've tried to export a sequence, many (but definitely not all) of the renders are lost on export, or if the export was cancelled.
I've been careful to ensure that every option is enabled for the "Render All", and we've reloaded the FCS 3 software, but we're still editing from the same original projects (one project per artist for a batch of artists that we're making DVDs for).
I'd love to hear any more ideas or suggestions.
Cheers
Andrew

  • FCP deleting render files on export

    Hi,
the FCP system that I'm working on (Mac Pro 2 x2.8ghx quad core / 10.6.4 / FCS 3) has developed an annoying problem of deleting render files on sequences when I try to export them. Meaning that I have to continually re-render sequences, and I can't export as a reference clip (because the render files appear to disappear as soon as the sequence is sent to export).
Does anybody have any suggestions that they could help me with? I've got a lot of material (10 shows in ProResLT HD), so it takes a long time to render each show, only to have the renders disappear as soon as the file is exported.
I've tried deleting the preference files, and it's not helping.
My seqeunces have been cut in multi cam (sequences set to ProResLT 1920 x 1080 25p), but have all been collapsed before rendering & export.
thanks in advance for your help!
    Cheers

  • Delete render files in FCP X 10.1.1

Hello, I desparately need to delete render files for old projects, but it seems this has changed in FCP 10.1.1.
There is no longer an option to Delete Project Render Files - there is only Delete Event Render Files - but the event library/browser on top left has changed, it now includes projects and don't really see events.  I choose my project but the Delete Event Render Files is disabled.... how can I delete the render files?
    thanks
    dan

Yes there is. Select the project in the event and it will appear.

  • My FCP X render files are taking up my hardrive space!

When I use HD footage for my Final Cut Pro projects it takes up 20 GB per project....
I have a 3 TB external Hardrive, is their a way I can use that to move my render files to it and still be able to edit my project?
Can i delete my render field without messing up my project? Cant I just serenader them later?
My high quality media folder takes up 50 gbs, can I move that to my external drive then delete off my computer? When I edit i will have my drive plugged in.
    Thanks.

You should definitely use the external drive - preferrably it should be connected via USB3 or Thunderbolt.
How you move things from here to there depends on what version of FCP X you are using.
In 10.1.x, assuming everything is inside the library, all you have to do is quit FCP X, drag the library to the external drive, let it copy over.
Then double click on the new library in the external drive and make sure everything works. After that you can delete the old one.
Regarding render files, you can delete them at any time, they can always be regenerated.

  • Deleting Render Files

I think I'm an idiot. In the interest of clearing out about 15GB of hard drive space on my macbook, I deleted the render files thinking I don't need them (maybe in fact I don't and they can be recreated - let's hope so!)
I've created a video presentation with voice overs and now I have to make some edits to this presentation. So, when I opened up my FCP file and then reconnected the media (I also moved the location of the media folder so I had to reconnect images, video, music, etc.), I was unable to load up the voice overs
The voice over film strips are all in place in the timeline, but I can't seem to load up the voice over audio files... Does this mean I have to recreate the voice overs all over again or are they located in some place I may have not looked, etc?
I pray the answer isn't one that turns south... I think I could cry, all for what? clearing out 15GB of hd space! **** OCD and trying to be neat/organized.

Recordings made with the voiceover tool are not render files. The files would have been recorded to the folder containing your media for the project, unless you specified somewhere else. Do a search in the finder for the file name you're missing.

  • Deleteing Render Files

Got an FCE4 project that I've been working on for a little while. Some of the sequences have been renamed and there were some files in the render directory that appeared to be from the old names, so I thought I'd get rid of them.
Now, when I open the project, I get a whinge about the files not being there (it lets me get on with things, but doesn't seem keen to forget about them forever). Also, I get problems when I drag exported .mov files into iDVD (they're broken). I deleted that com.plist.idvd file (not 100% sure of the name right now). I seem to be able to render the sequences OK with Alt-R (although one of the .mov files is enormous, considering it's not supposed to be self-contained) but find that I can't use the files.
I've heard tell of a Render Manager in FCP, but I guess that's not available for FCE.
So I'm a bit stuck now. Sorry for the somewhat chaotic "stream of consciousness" comments above, but any ideas to get this **** project onto a DVD?!

    Alex,
You certainly were stream of consciousness in your post ...
+when I open the project, I get a whinge about the files not being there+
An error message on FCE startup normally tells you that you have missing or unconnected source media files. Source media files are not render files. I don't think I've ever seen a 'missing render files' message at startup. Are you sure you didn't inadvertently delete one of your source media clips? Normally a missing render file will only evidence itself as a red bar in the timeline.
+I seem to be able to render the sequences OK with Alt-R (although one of the .mov files is enormous, considering it's not supposed to be self-contained)+
That doesn't make sense. If you can render the files, great, things should be working ok. The render files themselves are complete QT mov files (meaning they contain actual media, they are not QT reference files), but they are not called self-contained movies (that is an export option, not a render option).
    +but find that I can't use the files.+
Are you referring to the render files? If so, how are you trying to use them? Actually, you shouldn't be using them for anything - even though they are complete QT mov files, they are basically for internal use by FCE.
+I get problems when I drag exported .mov files into iDVD (they're broken).+
Exactly what files, and exactly what do you mean? Are you dragging render files into iDVD?
    ====================
Regarding render files ... generally not a good idea to trash render files until you're finished with your project. That said, given the apparent confusion over the state of your render files ... I'd trash all of them and re-render the entire project. The render files will be in a folder that has the same name as your FCE project.
You could also trash the +Final Cut Express Thumbnail Cache+ and +Final Cut Express Thumbnail Data+ files in the Thumbnail Cache Files folder. FCE will automatically create them again the next time you open the project.
Be sure to empty the trash before you re-render, however.

  • Deleted render files in Finder, now video won't preview or render

I deleted some render files in the Finder (not in Render Manager) with FCP running, and now the m2v video won't preview or render properly. The frames are all black or solid pastels. I've imported in a back up copy and the result is the same, no frame readout. Quicktime plays the video fine until the point the scrubber was in the timeline when I deleted the render files, then it reads only black until the end of the movie. Adobe AfterEffects reads the video fine, and Final Cut imports and reads other video files fine. How can I restore this video's functionality in QT and FCP?
    Thanks,
    Dan

Go here: http://www.squared5.com and get yourself a free copy of MPEG Streamclip. Install it.
Copy the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD to your hard drive.
Open VOB1.1 found inside the TS folder with Streamclip (you don't usually need VOB1.0). You might be asked if timecode errors should be fixed and if you want the other files too (you do). This will take a minute or two.
Go to File > Export >Export as QuickTime. Click the button at the top that is currently showing "Motion JPEG A", change it to DV. Move the quality slider to 100%. Click "Make Movie" and run through the save dialog.
In Final Cut Pro, go to the menu bar: Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup. Choose DV NTSC (or PAL as appropriate). Go to Sequence > Settings > Load Sequence Preset.
Import the files you made with Streamclip and edit them.
Export as a QuickTime Movie using Current Settings - as a Reference Movie or Self contained -this part is up to you, I prefer Self Contained, because it is independant of the original source material.
This file will be the basis for whatever you want to deliver the project as.

  • Can I delete Render files on a scratch disk?

I am using two disks for my scratch disks in Final cut express. The second disk in the list is a backup disk. I noticed that there are files in the render and audio render folders. Is it ok to empty those folders or should they remain there?

Yes, you can safely delete them - render files, cache files, waveform files.
In the event you later find that you need them, they can always be recreated by re-rendering.

  • FCP Deleted Video Files

At least this is my best guess. I had cut together a one minute teaser this weekend. This morning, I decided I wanted to create a title in Livetype so I exported the video For Livetype. The first export went through fine, but I forgot to take out the existing title. So I deleted the title and exported the video again. I tried importing it into Livetype but it said the .mov files that were in the video didn't exist. So I look now and all the clips I had in the teaser are now gone. The clips I didn't use in the video but still have in my browser are all ok. I have no idea what happened and would like to know so it doesn't happen again. I'm pretty sure I have the clips backed up, but I don't want my computer to start deleting files.
If it makes a difference, all the files are on a 1TB Western Digital MyBook for Mac external HDD.

I am doing a file recovery right now and it looks like it's picked up a few video files that have been deleted. I just hope they are the ones that vanished.< </div>
Do not get your hopes up. There are usually some unrecoverable bit in media files. Another thing we've never had satisfactorily explained but the files are missing something subtle. You will likely get an unknown file type or cannot open the selected app error.
Before you go completely nuts, try deleting whatever extension the recovered files have and thn writing a new .mov extension to the filename or, if they were captured or exported from FCP, try adding that weird .fcp extension.

  • Premiere CC export causes audio to go out of sync...mac & PC...various codecs...including flat passes...disk cache cleaned...render files deleted...what is going on?

    Hey all-
This is troubling. I'm getting slight audio shift every time I export a project. We noticed it originally when our sound guy brought in the OMF & realized the timecode and audio ended up coming out off by 3/4th of a frame. So we tested it...
    Exports to .movs / .mp4s / .mpegs
Brought them back in to the project....
Sound gets off by a 1/4th of a frame to 3/4th of a frame.
Then we started tested different files. Doing flat passes where NOTHING changed, just a re-export under the settings of the source file...
sound gets off by a 1/4th of a frame.
    Tried media encoder.
    same thing.
cleaned the disk cache...deleted render files
    same thing.
tried it on a new mac pro. tried it on a dell running windows 7.
    same.
    thing.
So is there a solve for this or should we just stop editing in Premiere? On a few occasions now I've had clients say "it seems like it goes out of sync right there" and I've gone back to the timeline and checked to see it was fine. Now I wonder if much of the work I've put out since I made the switch last year has fallen victim to this.
Is there any kind of solve for this? Should I just stop using premiere to cut? Because this is a deal breaker, especially if I'm going to have to rebuild the project I'm working on in another NLE.

avanishdivya thank you, but this did not help. I did exactly what you told me in both cases.
I haven't overclocked my pc and both of the suggested media encoder methods failed, my pc crashed and turned off...
    Any other suggestions ?

  • FCP render files become unusable

We have 5 FCP sets connected to a XSAN environment. All sets are running FCP 5.1.1/OSX 10.4.7/XSAN 1.4. There are two Metadata servers running OSX server 10.4.7. The backup metadata server is also running as directory master.
Every set has it's own directory user (for example SET1). No local users exist. The set's users are joined in a directory group (SAN_users).
The XSAN environment consists of folders which belong to a certain project (for example COMMERCIAL_1000). The XSAN volume uses ACL to control access rights. The directory group (SAN_users) has the rights to do everything on the volume.
When a project is started on SET1, render files generated by SET1 become unusable if the project was openend on SET2. It's not that the same project is open on both sets at the same time. If you work with your project on SET1 on monday, and on thursday you have to work on it in SET3, the render files of the project are useless.
Does anyone have any suggestion how render files can be preserved?
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2GHz/2Gb/120Gb

So when you open the project(s) in question, do you get the reconnect prompt?...and does it show the render files in the dialog box?
I've seen FCP 'lose' render files in the past, but have never determined exactly why, and it's not been an issue to simply re-render. I'm sure it is an issue for you.
I don't know the decklink processes, so don't know if that is part of the problem. Hopefully others will.
Are you certain you've told FCP to send render files to the drive you expect them to be on?
Have you run standard maintenance procedures?...Trash prefs w/FCP Rescue, Run Disk Utility/Repair permissions...etc?

  • FCP 5.1 file won't open in FCP 7

    Hi.
I am at my wits end...I have a FCP 5.1 file that I have been working on for years.
I had to upgrade to FCP 7 for reasons I won't go into and now my FCP 5.1 file won't open.
It is a file with footage from P2 cards. It has magic bullet/looks builder used throughout. I am not sure if that is the issue at one point ONE of the messages I got when it crashed (I got a few different ones at different times) was something about looksbuilder not working right.
In a nutshell, it slowly starts to open and then quits. (It gets to about 33 percent open over the course of 45 minutes and then crashes.)
The file is about half a gig and there is plenty of room on the MAC itself so it shouldn't be that the Mac is overtaxed.
I don't know what to do.
I tried opening various back-up copies, etc. because I thought maybe something was just corrupted. NONE of them open.
I tried deleting render files to limit how much it was trying to process when it opened the thing.
I even tried turning off the external drives that hold the media hoping that if it couldn't find the media it would just open the shell of a file for me and maybe I could reconnect it all later. Obviously, grasping at straws...
I am out of options. Do I just need to wipe my computer and reinstall 5.1 from scratch? That would stink because there is another project being worked on on the computer that is a FCP 7 file.
I tried putting a copy of FCP 5.1 back on the computer (so I have 7 and 5.1 on there now) to get it to open, but FCP 5.1 won't work either now (I get General Error 41 - whatever that means) Maybe you can't have two versions of FCP on the computer? Maybe it thinks it got opened in 7 so now it won't work in 5? even though it never fully opened? Guessing...
I'd appreciate any and all help. All I want to do is open the 5.1 file and save it in FCP 7 and work from there.
    Thanks!
    Shari

    Hey Michael:
Thanks for the response. I did something similar in that I opened the file on another computer that had FCP 7 and it was fine. So I saved that. Then I went to my Mac and tried to open that file and it crashed...but it said something about Looksbuilder...so I contacted them and they had me uninstall, reinstall and then fix the preference files for Looksbuilder and it now opens.
    YAY!
    Thanks again,
    Shari

  • Major FCP Glitching Render Problem - Any Ideas?

Hey folks, I'm running into massive render glitches with FCP. Here's what happens:
In a scene with a lot of fast cutting, and dupe frames, it all plays fine in realtime. However, once I render the footage, or make a self contained QuickTime, these areas lock up and get exported as freeze frames. These freeze frames are of the last frame of the previous clip before the cut. They stay on through the length of the next clip, and when FCP reaches the cut after that, it then plays fine again. It's very bizarre. It's almost like FCP can't keep up with accessing the media, and just skips the clip. I don't know why it would do that though, because it all plays as smooth as butter in realtime preview.
The only correlation that I've found is that there are dupe frames present in the areas where this is happening.
I've tried relocating my render drive to another disk drive... Deleting FCP preferences... Deleting render files... Pulling my Kona card... Nothing seems to fix the issue.
There's also another issue, which might be related. Whenever I try to apply certain filters, I get the following message, where EFFECT NAME is the name of a good number of effects:
"The effect 'EFFECT NAME' failed to render. Your hardware cannot render at the requested size and depth."
    OR
"The effect 'EFFECT NAME' cannot be rendered in a sequence of this size with the current graphics card."
So, are these issues because I have the stock ATI Radeon 2600?
    Here's my rig:
    Sequence / Codec:
    Apple ProRes 422 (normal) 1920x1080 23.98 psf
    Mac:
    FCP 6.0.3
    OS X 10.5.2
    2 x 3.2 GHz Quad-Core
    8 GB 800 MHz Ram
    ATI Radeon HD 2600
Kona 3 card with 5.1 drivers (latest)
    Media Storage / Render Drive:
    8TB Raid 5 ESATA storage
    HighPoint ESATA controller card
    ATI Radeon HD 2600:
    Name: ATY,Lamna
    Type: display
    Driver Installed: Yes
    Bus: PCI
    Slot: Slot-1
    Vendor ID: 0x1002
    Device ID: 0x9588
    Subsystem Vendor ID: 0x106b
    Subsystem ID: 0x00a6
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    Link Width: x16
Any help or insight here would be extremely helpful!
    Thank you in advance,
    Blake

Tried that, no dice. The media is fine. It plays without a hitch when it doesn't need to be rendered, or if it's rendered with non problematic filters on it.
After fiddling with the freeze frame render glitch issue some more, it appears to be directly associated with "Basic Motion" changes.
I can stack tons of filters, and it doesn't happen. As soon as I move the shot around with "Basic Motion", it locks up the clip in the render, and creates a freeze frame.
Perhaps this is linked to the graphics card errors I am getting?

  • FCP changes exported file name

Just checking to see if this is a small bug/quirk in the software. I export UC QT movies constantly from FCP. Occasionally, it will cut off the last letter of a file name I set and append some gibberish, like #6DB5 or something. I delete render files, rerender, and same thing. Sometimes I batch export, and only one file in the batch will get this problem. Just a bug?

This is when you have FCP limited to a certain size of file on export (often 2000 MB). I believe this was designed to cope with MSDOS limitations of 2gig per file on their file system, so the original QT would link to several under 2 gig size files. Change or remove your limit - it's under System Settings - remove the tick from Limit Capture/Export File Segment Size...

  • Render Files Disappearing

Question, I'm creating a variety of short (1-3 minute) videos in FCP 7, primarily a combination of various Motion .motn files embedded in the sequences. The problem I'm having is the render files are disappearing after only a couple of days. This means I keep having to re-render the .fcp projects whenever I want to work with them. I have a dedicated Scratch disk with over 150GB free.
What is FCP's algorithim for deleting render files? Are there any settings I can configure to have FCP hold onto or not delete any render files for a certain time?
    Thanks!
    lance

Up to now I have been importing the Motion .motn files directly into FCP. But I'm beginning to think you have the right approach. Export Motion files into ProRes, then import that into FCP.
Another problem I'm running into is if I open .motn file, and don't even edit it but just then close it also, when I open FCP it complains about the .motn file being unlinked.
ProRes and not embedded .motn files may be the way to go ...
