FCP DVD Tutorials resolution

I purchased a copy of FCP 5 last year and have only just started to use it.
The resolution of the DVD tutorial is terrible though, very fuzzy and blurred. I used to run it on an Imac and thought it may have been a resolution issue but I am using a Macpro with a 23" Cine screen and it is still as rubbish as ever.
Do other users have this issue or could it be that I have a dud DVD?
Regards
Colin

The media contained on those DVDs are using a low-resolution Quicktime codec called Photo-JPEG. So the picture quality will be really bad when playing on a large screen, or any screen for that matter. So it's normal, there's nothing wrong with your DVDs.

  • Converting VHS to DVD, which resolution?

I'm importing video into iMovie 08 from a VHS VCR using a datavideo DAC-200. When I'm exporting the video from iMovie so I can burn a disc in iDVD, I have the option of either 640 X 480 or 720 X 540 resolution. The source is VHS so it's 640 X 480 (or 240) so I'd assume I should use that. Or should I use the higher resolution to make a DVD?

    Use 640x480.

  • Any Good FREE FCP Video Tutorials Like LiveTypeCentral Do For LT ?

Recently my attention was drawn to some very good FREE video tutorials provided by LiveTypeCentral:-
    http://www.livetypecentral.com/cgi-bin/livetypecentral.cgi/tutorials.html
I was wondering if there are any similar free ones covering FCE/FCP or the other FCS apps?
I don't need them of course ....... they are just for friends! (If you believe that you'll believe anything).
Incidentally I have done a search and had a look at the Creative Cow ones, but they tend to be on somewhat random esoteric subjects.
I am looking for something that starts with the basics of the apps.

Sorry, I didn't make it clear.
I mainly wanted freely available tutorials that I could direct others to on the FCE and other forums. Frequently newcomers don't know where to start, and I don't have time to write a new manual, so it is very efficacious to be able to point them to a site with free tutorials.
That LiveType source I quoted is excellent. So now, basically all I am looking for is a similar one for Soundtrack and FCE/FCP.
The first one you linked is probably fine except for the download time which would probably have taken several hours per tutorial, which is going to put off many newcomers looking for a quick-fix.
I must admit I also like looking at tutorials (I never used to!) because every one of them has a different angle and it's surprising what you can pick up, that you have missed in others.

  • Opinions - DVD Mastering Resolution

    Hello,
I've read that DVD and DV 4:1:1 have similar resolution. I've also read that DVDs are on the order of resolution of VHS-SP. What I haven't read is... Does a Digi-Beta or DVCPRO 50 video or film transfer look noticeably better when transferred to DVD than a DV master of same video or film?
My guess is yes, because there was a similar argument to be made with VHS dupes in the past coming from 1" type-C, Beta-SP or 3/4" U-matic. In other words, the higher quality somehow filtered through to the dub rather than being filtered out.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Chris
You are correct that the higher quality the source material, the better the quality of your mpeg. The reason is simple, lets say I have a digi-beta video that I dub to DV. Right there I'm looking at 5:1 compression of the source. On a studio monitor if you compare the digi-beta orig to the DV dub you can see the difference, the DV is a bit softer, edges get more aliasing, fine detail gets blured, etc.
When you convert this to an mpeg, there's all these algorithms that are reinterpreting the source footage and striping as much info out of it as possible while still trying to represent the original. If you've already gone down a generation and softened, blurred, weakened the source, the mpeg will be representative of this and not of the best the footage can look.
    Hope that helps
    Cheers

  • Create a DVD | Video resolution issue - HD or FullHD

    Hi,
I created a new project selecting PAL and AVCHD 1920x1080 16:9 25fps video. The original AVCHD video in FullHD is 9GB.
I now have to create a DVD and end the project selecting to burn it on a 4,7 GB DVD but wish to preserve the FullHD if possible.
When selecting the option to burn the DVD I get in the drop down menu 4 selections being 2 for NTSC and 2 for PAL: PAL and PAL Widescreen.
Obviously as the project is 16:9 I should select Widescreen but I do not know if I will end up having the video in FullHD.
    Here are my few questions:
    1. how to be able to burn a FullHD video project into a 4,7 GB DVD if i do not see any FullHD selection in the drop down menue for DVD category? Is this because DVD category does not manage FullHD?
Reading through some manual I believe that it is AVCHD the selection I should use, rather than DVD. Is this correct?
Also, what resolution would Pal Widescreen record?
Lastly, how to find out which resolution i now have the project being burned on this DVD?
    2. If I know that my project in FullHD is bigger than  4,7 GB DVD what should I do, when I create a new Premiere EL project, in order to get the best resolution? Should I select still AVCHD but HD resolution even if I will not know if it will be sufficient?
Can someone please share with me what is the correct discernment to use for preparing a new project and/or handling the video settings for getting the properl DVD result?
    Thank you

    >find out which resolution the project being burned on this DVD
Link to DVD Demystified FAQ http://forums.adobe.com/thread/544206 may help
A DVD made to play in a DVD player, not a BluRay "hybrid" as Hunt described, which requires a BluRay player, may NOT be HiDef... only Standard Definition
As far as I know, NTSC is 720x480 (with a PAR flag to determine regular 4:3 or widescreen 16:9 playback)
I do not know the exact size of a PAL screen but since you mention PAL, you should be able to find out the screen size for your part of the world

  • Changing DVD output resolution in encore CS4

    Hi.
I've recently started using encore to produce DVD's but I have noticed that whenever I create a new project the DVD resolution is locked at 720 x 576.
This hasn't been a problem because the past few DVD's iv made were just low quality anyway, but now I'm wanting to make a full HD DVD because I have a video saved at 1920x1080
how can I change this resolution to match the video files??
    Thanks
    PomTom

Proper dvd's with movies on them have a high quality output setting that looks crisp on large tv's
Its not a blue ray disk, Its a normal dvd
When i make dvds though encore since the dimentions is stuck at 720x576 the image is pixalted
Proper DVDs are only 720x576 (PAL) or 720x480
This is DVD spec. See Encore help for DVD formats it supports.
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/encore/cs/using/WS5C9E1CF8-B5BC-436f-89D3-61DDC02A2C47a.html
As John points out, commercial studios use high end software (I think he meant starting at $5,000), multi-passes, and special experts in compression.
But what you describe (pixelated), sounds like poor quality, not just not good on large screens. So you are having problems either in the downrez or the datarate.
What is the datarate you are using? How long is the video?

  • 5.1 FCP/DVD crisis

I am trying to do a 5.1 video with FCP, Logic, Compressor and DVD Pro.  I can't seem to be able to add the 5.1 audio as an option to the 2.0 audio attached to the video.  What am I doing wrong?

First under the Window menu, go to Configurations and make sure Advanced is selected.
Then in the Outline Palette select your Track. Now on the Track tab you will see a number of rows labeled V1, A1, A2, S1, etc. Drag your AC3 file from your Assets tab over to A2.
    There is also a tutorial on how to set up a Audio selection menu here;

  • FCP output, best resolution to Mobile Me

I have an  6 min edit that is 1920x1080 29.97 apple pro res 422. I want to output it in the best resolution that will upload on my mobil me account (1 gig is max it says) for approval purposes.  How should I go about doing this? Export in QT Conversion and MPEG-4 of some sort?

File - Send to Compressor... find the YOUTUBE setting.
Hit SUBMIT and you are done.
(not exactly... but actually kinda close).  Get past the first bit... show some effort and I'd be happy to help from there.  Plenty of help in the manuals of each of those programs.

  • Does FCP Reduce Photo Resolution?

When I import an image into FCPX, the inspector shows its scale to be 100%, but the image fits in the window.  If I want the image to be a little larger so I can use a Ken Burns effect, am I getting what I ask for?  Also, I'm thinking of importing a 4K resolution video file (DSLR timelapse) and using the same effect on it (and so have the same question regarding video files).
    Thanks,
    Lawrence

    Thanks Tom,
As always, you are the man in "the know."  Unchecking spatial conform does show that the image is indeed larger than the screen.  I appreciate your time!

  • Tutorials on dvd player

    Hi,
I recently bought a dvd player with the idea of playing fcp & motion tutorials beside the computer for convenient learning whilst using fcp. The FCP & Ripple tutorial discs are not recognised by the region 1 player. Does anyone know of fcp & motion tutorials which CAN be played on a region 1 dvd player ?

I would doubt that its a region issue, more likely that it just doesn't like those discs
Do you have access to any other player with which you can test them (I'd expect your family or friends may let you try it).
You might also want to contact the fine folks at Ripple Training and check with them too

  • From Low Resolution Recording to High Resolution SVCD or DVD

I am wondering, if I record from a VHS tape at the lowest resolution onto my hard drive, then use WinProducer/Wincoder 2.0 (bundled together now) to convert it to a higher DVD quality resolution and burn it to a CD, will the quality be at least near what it would have been had I have recorded it as a high resolution file to begin with?
I thank any responses in advance.

    hplsbyufan
The point of recording in low resolution is that it takes less data than high resolution. So if you save something in low resolution you have lost the extra data that was needed to describe the images in more detail.
By way of analogy, if I describe the plot of a film I have just seen (low resolution) you cannot use that description to retrieve the detail of each scene (high resolution).
So, unfortunately you cannot get a higher resolution than that in which you originally recorded it.
    Sorry
    Ross

  • How to burn decent resolution slide show onto DVD ?

First of all I'm a newbie to this (PS8 Elements and Premier). I have a slide show with music in "Slide Show Editor". When I view this slide show in 'Full Screen Preview" I see a decent resolution but when I burn the slide show onto a DVD the resolution sucks if it's shown in "Full Screen". ( the slide show looks decent if shown in a smaller screen). I took the pictures with a 7 mega pixel camera. Another thing that happens when viewing "Full Screen" in the burned DVD is the text (if it fills the whole screen) some text is hidden around the borders.I burn the DVD in the Premier program.

Thanks for your reply. I'll try what you typed but the
hard part will be figuring how .

  • Changing resolutions in FCP X and how to go about resizing clips that get sized down.

Hey all! After changing an FCP X project resolution from 760 x 480 to 1080 x 720 (I think those were the dimensions; I am not right in front my project right now to check; basically, from SD to HD), how do you go about resizing clips that now appear smaller within the frame? In my case, I have a cutaway clip that is now appearing at a very small size scale in the middle of the frame, and the clip from which it is supposed to cut away is visible in the background. The strange thing is--this clip does not appear to have a problem when I am viewing it in the FCP X project. It does, however, become smaller when the project is uploaded to YouTube. Please help, I'm trying to finish this project by tomorrow, and this is LITERALLY the only thing that is holding me back!!

The original footage was shot in 1080p, and I didn't realize that I wasn't working in an HD resolution on FCP X until I tried to upload the project to YouTube. Not trying to change SD clips to HD; trying to work in an HD resolution with 1080p footage. I hope that makes sense...
I will have to wait until tomorrow to post the exact media specs...as I said, I am not in front of the project right now and do not have access to it from my home computer.
When I say "cutaway clip," I mean a video clip that is layered over an interview clip, and plays while you can still hear the interview narration (see photo below). From what I've read so far, I agree in that I think the frame is letter-boxed/pillar-boxed, which I believe can be adjusted in the "Spatial Conform" section of the Inspector. Just wanted to make sure this was correct.
Below you will see a screen shot of what this clip looks like on YouTube. Basically, in FCP X, it is appearing at 100% in terms of size scale, and the clip behind it is not visible.
