FCP Export to M2v file...finder crashes on select

My finder crashes every time I select a file that was exported with FCP. Any reasons why this happens?
I believe if you turn of the preview window it will keep it from crashing, just click that little flippy triangle above the preview. Even with the mpeg2 component installed, if you click on a 60 minute mpeg2 file you will get a good 30 seconds of the old beach ball as it loads the preview, which can be quite annoying.

When opening a file Finder crashes (every time!)
MY SPECS:
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011)
2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
and I am running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 (14C1514)
THE PROBLEM
So the recurring problem is, when I try to open a file in finder, finder just crashes, and relaunches.
However I can open applications in spotlight but whenever i try to open anything in finder it just crashes (except when I open an application).
I noticed this had began yesterday after downloading a few songs from chrome, but wouldn't open in finder and it just crashed/relaunched.
So what I have done is restarted my laptop twice, gone in Disk Utilities performed some repairs and it did nothing.

Finder crashing after selecting "remote disk" mba.
Was trying to set up remote disk with a sony vaio but had no luck as the finder would crash if I tried to open the remote disk folder. Now the finder is crashing regularly if I click on the remote diisk option.

Finder restarts if a .m2v file is in the window
I'm going to post this question in several forums because I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software problem/glitch.
I am using Final Cut Pro 4.5HD. After I complete a poject, I export the file out of Compressor to create a .m2v file (mpeg-2). When I try to open the window/folder in which the .m2v file resides (I usually export it to an external hard drive's main window), the window opens with no file names showing and stays open for about a second, then the Finder restarts without that window being open. The same thing happens no matter where I export the .m2v file, meaning that the same thing happens with that window.
I have Quicktime Pro 7.1.6 and the MPEG-2 plug-in, but I'm not sure if the plug-in is working or not. I purchased the plug-in in June 2005 and have since upgraded Quicktime and the OS several times.
I'm assuming that because I can export .m2v files that the MPEG-2 plug-in is working, but I've read that it's used for playback only.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?
I also need to save an AIFF file as an mpg1...any suggestions?

Get info (apple+I) on one of your .m2v files
In the "Open with" dropdown find QuickTime Player.
If it isn't in the list choose "other" and navigate to QuickTime Player in your Applications folder.
Then click on the "Change all" button. -
Folders containing m2v files crash
Folders / Windows containing m2v files crash when opening or while trying to "arrange" the files.
Some folders will not even open.
It began after a recent series of upgrades. I've tried trashing various related preferences, etc. to no avail.
Could it be a Java problem? Any other suggestions will help lower my stress.

G5 PowerPC Dual 1.8GHz 512 Mac OS X (10.3.9)I had the same problem. Theoretically, the problem is solved by assigning the QT Player as the default application via the INFO panel. Practically, the Finder crashes immedately if you select a m2v-file.
Here's the solution:
Step 1: select a file that is NOT m2v. Take a AIFF file, for example, or something else.
Step 2: Hold down the "Apple key" and select TWO m2v files. The result is that three files are selected: the file from step 1 and two m2v files.
Step 3: Still hold down the Apple key. Click on the file from step 1. That deselects it. The result is that you have just the two m2v files selected.
If you do this as described, the finder has no opportuniy to "read" or open or preview the file (that's where the crashes come from).
Step 4: Now press Apple + i (the Info panel)
Step 5: In the Info panel, select the Quicktime Player as the default application. Make sure to assign this to all m2v files (extra button in the panel).
Step 6: Close the panel.
Step 7: Check if the m2v files show the Quicktime icon again.
Step 8: Reboot
Sometimes, the Finder would not assign the Quicktime Player as the default application to ALL m2v files. If so, select all the files, type Apple + i, and assign them manually.

Removing unwanted chapter markers from m2v files
I inadvertantly left some unwanted chapter markers in FC sequences which I then exported as m2v files. Is there any way to remove the chapter markers from the m2v files so I don't have to re-render to m2v? I have lots of files!
The original files were edited in FCP, then edited in Motion to add graphic overlays. From there, they were rendered as m2v using Compressor.
The chapter markers are all visible in both FCP and Motion, but both of those options require re-rendering from the source file type back to m2v. This is a time consuming step that I'm hoping to avoid by, somehow, removing the chapter markers from the m2v file itself.
I just need to know if there is any way to remove a chapter marker from an m2v file. -
Importing a m2v file, or a dvd into final cut
What the best (less compression on video only) way to import a movie of a dvd in final cut pro 5.0.4 and 5.1 . Will fcp import a m2v file. If any other software in involved, let me know. What the settings in the timeline set? Would it matter if the dvd was widescreen or 4:3 in the setting for sequences? Thankyou for reading this and any responces will be helpful.. E.
I am using the mpeg streamclip. for a 2 hour movie, and the export of hdv 60i, its taking over three hours and its at 60 percent. is that normal for the export setting? Also, i tried to rip the dvd staraight into the mpeg streamclip, but was having trouble. I had allready rip it in the m2v file and imported that into mpeg streamclip and it works. Is there a way i can skip that step and go directly in mpeg streamclip.

Since last friday I got a problem. When I try to open a file or even look for the specifics of a file Finder crashes and I need to restart it. When I open the files with excel or word or something everything is OK. I never had this problem before.

Thank you.All depends on what you mean by a clean install. If you back up your data, and ONLY your data, erase the drive, install Leopard and DO NOT use migration assistant, rather setup your account from scratch, then reinstall your applications (and do this judiciously, one at a time, test, then install the next) and reset your preferences and the info for your email and so on, and then copy your data back, then yes, that would undoubtedly fix all your problems. If you mean something else, such as using migration assistant to move everything for you, it is quite possible that it will move your problem back too.
As far as tediousness goes, it seems to me to be about 6 of one and half a dozen of the other, between a genuine clean install, and attempting to sort out what is different between your account the working account.
Running the full updater for 10.5.1 certainly won't hurt anything. Doubt it will cure your problem though.
One non-destructive thing you can try is start in safe mode (your account is working then, right?), and move your HOME Library folder to the Desktop, then restart normally. If the Finder is then working you can move things you absolutely must have from the old Library on the Desktop back into the newly created pristine home Library (probably the Mail folder and preferences, and Safari's stuff and Application Support).

Encore locks system during import of m2v files
I have exported numerous m2v files from Adobe Premiere, and can not import them into Encore without a full system lock. I am using PCs with Windows 7 Pro 64bit on a Desktop with 8GB RAM and Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on a Laptop with 4GB RAM. I've had nothing but problems with CS4 since I cleanly installed my Desktop and purchased my Laptop. This may not be an issue if I could export Microsoft Uncompressed or DV compressed AVI files to transcode, but Adobe Premiere will not export DV compressed with video, only audio, and will not export uncompressed at all! On the desktop, I can export Matrox RTX2 DV compressed files, but it takes forever. I have a system with Vista Pro 64bit at work, and none of these problems are there.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the whole suite (plus removed all preferences files and went in to the user profile and manually removed any traces) to no avail. As I am experiencing this same issue across two totally different systems, is it a known bug with Windows 7 64bit? Is there any way to fix the issue?Encore FAQ

Finder crashes on Control-Click
Hi all,
Since installation of 10.4.8 update, I find that when I control-click (or right-click) a file, Finder crashes and any files or drives residing on my desktop disappear. I have to click Finder in the dock and then the screen jumps a little and everything comes back.
It only happens with files. When I control-click a folder, I get the appropriate menu.
I just realized a also recently installed Stuffit 11 too.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Look in the "Contextual Menu Items" folder in "Library" at the top level of your disk. The full version of Stuffit might have done it. I only use the Expander. -
DVDSP 3 Crashes importing m2v files
Hi, I´ve been trying to finish a project on DVDSP3 for 5 days now. Always the same problem. I´ve encoded a FCP rendered sequence to m2v file using compressor. The process was sucessful!. The thing is when I try to import the file into DVDSP using Palette crashes automatically. I started trying other ways of importing and the same thing over and over again. I´ve tried to open the file on Quicktime and works perfectly, the preview works fine on finder. Everything seems to be in order. But when dragging the file into the timeline the program crashes. Sometimes also crashes when I open the program. I´ve repaired the disk permissions, downloaded the proapp update and installed it again.... nothing. Tried also re-installing the DVDSP and nothing. I tried importing the m2v file as an asset and the file appears on the list but when dragging it to the timeline, guess what?: crashes again. Finally I took the FCP project and compressed it again, thought maybe the other file was corrupted. Everything was fine until I tried dragging the file to the timeline when DVDSP crashed again... sorry but i´m f@*ing tired of this. CAN ANYONE HELP!!!!!!!...
Like i said before it´s been my 5th day in a row and nothing seems to work... Any help will be great!

What is the best seeting to export as smaller file size AVI from FCP?
Hi, I know the topic sounds very similar to many of AVI post it had been up, however, somehow, I do not find the right answer that I'm looking for.
I have a couple animation created from QT as "image sequence".
I simply want to export as avi file.
Here is the question I have.
1. If I choose DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, and choose scan mode as Progressive, I get interlacing looking quality video.
2. If I choose compressor type as "NONE" then even I set as "least" quality, the file size will be over 1G..although, that's the quality I'm trying to archive.
Is there any other setting I can choose to get good quality with lower file size avi? I have seen or download avi file on the net with very good quality and still download-able file size...What is the QT method? (Export from QT Player?)
Yes, 10 hour plus is ridiculous. I'm guessing that there was either something wrong with your Internet connection and/or at the You Tube end of the uploasd/compression process.
Innocentius and Hugh are right; using Compressor (or MPEG Streamclip) and using YT's uploader is the most reliable workflow.(Since Google changed the account verification process, there have been reports of upload problems using Share>You Tube.) In addition, you have more control over the quality of your movie. You can create multiple custom settings in Compressor and then Share > Compressor custom settings. It will go faster if you export out of FCP as a Pro Res 422 file; should take 3-4 minutes top. The Web encode for a 3 minute video in Compressor might take 15 minutes, depending on your system. MPEG Streamclip is probably a little faster.

Finder relaunches when viewing M2V file info ...
I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but I imagine I'm most likely to find an answer here. So, here it goes:
As the topic states, the Finder relaunches itself whenever I try to view the file info of a M2V file. This happens when I'm attempting to "Get Info" or simply scrolling the window to the right. More specifically, this occurs when I reach the "Kind" column (removing "Kind" from the window disables the problem). While I wouldn't mind simply excluding "Kind" from my windows, I am still unable to "Get Info" on any M2V files. Any ideas why this may be occuring?
The Files:
- compressed with Compressor 2.0.1, via Final Cut Pro 5.0.2 (source media uses "Animation" codec)
- MPEG-2 compression
- 1-pass, 7.5 Mbs CBR, 29.97fps progressive, 720x 480
The System:
- Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5
- 2.5 GB RAM
- 372.62 GB SATA RAID (96.11 GB available)
- OS 10.3.9 (all "Software Updates" installed)

However, since you experience a crash in the Finder when you try to access the Get Info you will have to use a different technique to reset the file association. Select one of the .m2v files that is giving you a problem and then do a control-click (or right click) to show the Finder's contextual menu, then go to the Open With item and select Other... and click the Always Open With checkbox and then navigate to your QuickTime Player and select it as the application to open. This will change the file association for the .m2v file kind and it should fix the problem. You may want to do a system reboot after you do the above fix.
Summary: control-click or right click on the problem .m2v file then:
Open With -> Other... -> (select "Always Open With" checkbox) -> Open (choose) QuickTime Player.
If this suggestion helps in any way, a confirmation or acknowledgment would be appreciated, since that would also help others who may be having the same difficulty. Do for others as you would have them help you. -
Finder crashing/restarting with certain files visible?
This problem has been going on for months now and I've not found anyone else with it or any suggestions that don't include "go buy 10.4 you cheapskate."

you can fix the list view as well by disabling the "kind" column under "View" > "Show view options". Now, this will stop your Finder crashing but does not really solve your .m2v problem. In order to tackle this issue, you will have to re-associate this file type with the application that you usually employ to view these files. You do this via the Info pane when you ctrl-click on the file in question and select "Get Info". However, first you have to make sure that the info pane does not try to preview the file or you will be back in limbo-land. To do so, ctrl-click on any "safe" file (like a pdf file ) and in the info pane toggle the preview triangle so that the preview pane is closed. Now navigate to one of your troublesome m2v files, ctrl-click, select "Get Info", go to "open with" and selct your application of choice. If you select Quicktime, make sure that you have the proper plug-in installed:
