FCP Export Using... vs. stand-alone Compressor

Hi
I have a 90 minute HD sequence in FCS2, which I'm now building test DVDs from. Not having used Compressor, I'm wondering which of the following workflows people recommend:
- In Final Cut, Export Using Compressor, set up preset, and submit; or
- In Final Cut, Export Quicktime, then in Compressor, import .mov and process
In theory, are they doing the same thing? The "Using Compressor" export brings up a "Compressor Processing" window with frame numbers ascending pretty slowly, the progress bar is just a big barber-shop pole (it doesn't fill left to right), and there's no "expected finish time", so I don't know if it's really saving me any time. At least the Quicktime export gave me a nice progress bar and only took an hour or so.
MacPro 2x2.66GHz, 4GB RAM, by the way.
Sequence is ProRes HD (High) 1920 x 1080i.
Any points of view welcome ... thanks!
Matt

Silal is correct - Export Using Compressor, especially with unrendered timelines, produces the best quality that Compressor has to offer when going .m2v because it forces Compressor to render directly into the MPEG-2 stream. Of course, this usually takes 3-5x as long as an encode of a reference movie.
Before we had Color, many of us did color correction in FCP and that's really when it helped to use this process (export using Compressor, unrendered). Now that we have Color (and Color renders footage for us), this workflow is less appealing.
Since you've got a Mac Pro, when exporting directly to Compressor, you can't use virtual clustering, so not only are you using a slower process, but you can't even make use of all your processors.
In your case, since you're working in 1080 ProRes422 HQ, export a reference movie, crank up Frame Controls' Resize to Better, and make use of virtual clustering.

  • FCP export using compressor

    does anybody know where the jobs compressor submits get stored?
    I can't export via compressor out of FCP 6.1, (FCP quits responding) but if I export a quicktime then get that in compressor using a quemaster quick cluster, it rocks along fine until I forget I can't export out of FCP, or a freelancer does it and resources get stupid until the job finally finishes. cancelling won't fix it, quitting, shutting down none of it stops the job. If I could find where the job is stored I could trash it and work could renew. Thankyou

    duh
    users/library/aapplication support/compressor/history
    fixed it. now if only I didn't have to worry about export using compressor from FCP 6.1 Studio2. wouldn't that be something? if it really worked? wow that'd be cool

  • FCP Export using Compressor hangs 'em both

    I searched for the answer earlier this week. Didn't find anything, but I eventually figured it out. Here was my problem:
    The Compressor preferences allow you to choose a default preset. I never had defined a default preset, and things worked fine. When I do choose a default preset (I chose DVD Best Quality: 120min: All), there were problems. Selecting sequences in FCP and doing "Export using Compressor" results in a hang on both apps.
    The number of sequences or their lengths seem to have no effect on the process. Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else has the same problem.
    Alan

    This sounds different from my problem. I was getting a hang when the sequences were being added to the batch list. It wouldn't even give me a chance to submit the batch. Maybe someone else has a clearer idea of what you're experiencing.

  • Can we use both Stand alone and Extended classic in one SRM system

    Hi All,
    Our client is now using Stand alone SRM system with back-end R/3 FI-CO system. Now they want to go Extended classic scenario for few product categories.
             Would it be possible to use both in one SRM system? If possible could you please provide what are the sequential steps to do this?
                 Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Ram

    Hi Ramesh,
    How did you end up solving your problem, as i have the same scenario.  Did you use this BADI (
    SRM Server->Business Add-Ins->Control Extended Classic Scenario->Activate Extended Classic Scenario)?  Based on my reading, it seems this BADI is relevant to switch between extended classic and classic scenarios.
    From what i understand, we can control the standalone scenario via the define backend system configuration (SAP SRM -> SRM Server -> Technical Basic Settings -> Define Backend System for Product Category).  In my scenario, I have one set of product categories, so i will likely need to implement this BADI (BBP_DETERMINE_LOGSYS, method:   DETERMINE_LOGSYS - SAP SRM -> SRM Server -> Business Add-Ins ->Shopping Carts and Requirement Items -> Determine Backend System / Company Code) in order to determine the correct backend system based on company/plant for example.
    Did you then leave the extended classic scenario activated (IMG --> Supplier Relationship Management -> SRM Server-> Cross-Application Basic Settings->
    Activate Extended Classic Scenario)?
    Or how did you achieve both standalone and extended classic using one SRM server?
    cheers,
    AD

  • HP 820MFP can scanner be used as stand alone without pc?

    Hello,
      We have a HP Designjet 820 MFP system.  The computer and printer has now died and will be replaced with a newer model.  I am familure with these scanners being made by Contex and resold through Oce Idel and HP.
      Is it possibile to use this scanner without the supplied HP PC, as stand alone?  I have tried the Context wide system connecting the scanner using the firewire cable.  The system does not have the drivers correct.  If i had the drivers i would be able to use the scanner we bought and paid for.
      The scanner is still good shape and low useage and in good shape,  still supoorted by the parent vendor, simular models being sold as stand alone for over 10k, it would be a shame to have to junk this unit out.
    Thansk for your help.

  • Export Using Compressor from FCP fails every time

    When I try to use the File>Export>Using Compressor command in FC Studio 2, everything seems normal until I submit the batch. But the job fails every time.
    I get the following message: "Processing service request error: Final Cut Pro.app generated an error or unexpectedly quitUser aborted Media Server".
    I've gone through all the discussion stuff on how Compressor needs to be reinstalled and all that. That's not my problem here. Compressor will work fine if I use it standing alone. It's only if I try to use the FCP export that this problem occurs.

    Compressor works fine as a stand alone when I import a Quicktime file. However, if I try to export a suquence directly from FCP, it gives me a message "File Error: A file of this name already exists". If I press okay it exports it to Compressor which gives me a message, "Can't preview movie Final Cup Pro App is busy".
    Then when I go ahead and load the output settings into compressor ( actual compressor window shows the sequence as being loaded) it starts to render and then it stops with the following message logged
    "Name: MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass
    Time Elapsed: 0:00:00
    Time Remaining: 0:00:00
    Percent Complete: 100
    Status: Failed - Final Cut Pro.app generated an error or unexpectedly quitUser aborted Media Server"
    Any ideas what the problem might be?

  • Audio Sync when Exporting Using Compressor

    Hello!
    Having an odd situation. Project in FCP 4.5 the audio is sync'd just fine in FCP export using Compressor and the audio is delayed about 5 seconds...so the video footage starts and about 5 seconds later the audio starts. Now, in the same project I have other footage and exported the same exact way without issues - I have no idea why this particular footage would be an issue! Because Compressor is exporting these files with the audio and video as separate files I am seeing this issue when the file is in DVD Studio Pro - but again none of the other files that are being placed on this DVD are having audio alignment issues...so this is not making sense.
    I am not 'new' at this but I am no expert either - my main gig is audio - so I could really use some help.
    Any suggestions? I am not sure what other information someone would need to help so ask away.
    Thanks in advance!

    Well I REALLY need some help with this one! I have tried so many different 'work arounds' without success. As mentioned in my first post the audio is not sync'ing with the video when exported. I have tried Exporting the file in QuickTime, I have tried using Compressor again exporting just the video then the audio - pulling it into a new session and lining it up again but everytime I pull it the newly exported file into a new project and render it FCP crashes not allowing it to render (nice!). I actually started from square one capturing the video footage again and assemble the project again without luck. I simply cannot believe what a pain in the arse this is!! I need to get this project done and it simply won't do it.
    Where are my blood pressure pills????

  • Quality differences between "Export Using Compressor..." and Drag & Drop

    There are quite a few people out there discussing the 24p workflow for the new Canon HV20 (on hv20.com, dvinfo.net, etc.). The HV20 can shoot 24 progressive frames/sec, but stores them as 29.97 interlaced HDV on tape, with an arbitrary cadence.
    One of the better workflows is to capture into FCP using HDV over Firewire, and use Compressor to extract the progressive frames from the interlaced. Its Reverse Telecine seems to automatically figure out the cadence. I've been testing this using the "Other Workflows > Apple Codecs > Apple ProRes 422 for Progressive material (HQ)" preset, with the following modifications, Frame Controls: On, Deinterlace: Reverse Telecine, Frame Size: 1920x1080.
    That's just background.
    The problem is this. If I export the HDV clip from FCP, "Export > Using Compressor...", the resulting 24p footage is extremely high quality. However, if I drag & drop the HDV clip directly into Compressor, or set up a Compressor droplet (arguably more straightforward for batch conversions), the resulting footage has obvious resizing artifacts (jaggies).
    Obviously, I'm keeping everything consistent setting-wise, and have thoroughly examined the resulting .movs. The only difference is the actual image quality.
    Anyone seen anything like this?
    I'm less concerned about this specific workflow than I am about Compressor producing non-identical results from identical footage with the same settings, dependent on your chosen workflow...
      Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    What I need to know if it is a dramatic different in quality that I should use DVD Pro instead of iDVD.
    If you want a DRAMATIC improvement in quality, shoot sharp, high quality content like Hollywood (usually on film) and have it compressed by high quality hardware encoders.
    There is a good reason Hollywood DVDs look better than iDVD/DVD Studio Pro DVDs.

  • FCP exporting help needed

    Hi. I have also posted this question in the Final Cut forum, but thought I would try here as well. I am trying to export a video from FCP 5.1.3. It's roughly 4 mins in length, 720x480, and my client needs it as an uncompressed QT. The source footage is all animations that he supplied me with on a drive. After many long hours and many attempts, I am unable to export an uncompressed QT, so I think I'm doing something wrong. Here is a summary of my orignal posts on the FCP forum:
    Hi. I am trying to export a video from FCP 5.1.3. It's roughly 4 minutes (720x480, 29.97fps), and I need an uncompressed quicktime. I have tried several times to export, but it usually quits about 75% of the way through.
    I have tried many ways. I am exporting to a Lacie 160GB external drive via USB2, and there are about 30GB available. So, here's what I've attempted thus far:
    - Export as a QT Movie: Settings - uncompressed 8bit NTSC, including Vid & Audio, make self contained. I have also tried setting the compressor to None. After about 25 minutes (about 75%), FCP just terminated.
    - Export Using Compressor:
    Settings - default Quicktime
    Inspector - Settings - Compressor = None
    Depth = Best, Millions of Colors +
    This resulted in a "Failed QT error 27"
    - Export Using QT Conversion
    Settings - Compressor = None
    Depth = Best, Millions of Colors +
    I have also tried using Uncompressed 8 bit, and 10 bit, but with all three I get "File Error: Unknown File".
    During one of my many attempts in the wee hours of the morning (I can't remember which one exactly) the export got to about 75% again, when it terminated and the dialogue box said that the file was too big. Would this mean that the file is too big for my destination drive, or does FCP have a file export size limit? Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is something I have to have done today, and my client requested uncompressed. The source files are all animations that I have imported into FCP, and they need to be absolute best quality going back to him.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    Charles

    It sounds to me like you're trying to make the file too big. You do not need to export a 10bit Uncompressed file for 720x480 MinDV footage. Check with your client and ask how big he needs the video. If your native 720x480 is fine, then just export QuickTime Movie using Current Settings and check the Make This Movie Self Contained box.
    That will be an uncompressed QT version of your film in the DV format.
    Hope that helps. It should only take it a couple of minutes.

  • Stand-Alone JMS SAF Client

    Im interested in using a WL Stand-Alone JMS SAF Client to send messages to a server-side JMS destination,
              regardless of the servers availability.
              This is for a J2SE Swing Application. There currently is no app server interaction.
              I found the doc http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs92/client/saf_client.html
              It describes almost everything except for what the actual client will look like.
              Im stuck after "Modify Your JMS Client Applications.." section.
              Questions:
              A) Suggestions for other docs?
              B) Is anyone using a Stand-Alone JMS SAF Client?
              C) Does anyone know of any code examples?
              The odd thing is that a search on the net for "JMS SAF Client" or variants of yields nothing other than the WL docs...

  • AMF connection working on browser, not in stand alone player

    Greetings,
    I'm trying to communicate my SWF file with PHP using Zend_Amf. I compile the flash side using Flex SDK 4.
    Whenever I try to run the swf using the stand alone player (the projector), I always get a NetConnection.Call.BadVersion event. However, when running exactly the same file thorught the player of the browser (even not thoguht a server, just using the file:// kind of address), everything works OK, so I know my code is not completely wrong.
    I thought this could be related with the security sandbox. However, I added the folder where my swf file is to the global trusted folder; and actually made sure that Security.sandboxType returns "localTrusted". How ever, that didn't fix anything.
    So I'm out of ideas. Any suggestion on where to look next?

    Here's my code, in case its needed (it's a pretty straightforward hello world example):
    PHP SIDE:
    $a = new Amf_Model_Test();
    $server = new Zend_Amf_Server();
    $server->setClass('Amf_Model_Test');
    echo $server->handle();
    class Amf_Model_Test
    * return string
    public function greet()
        return "hello";
    AS SIDE:
    public class main extends Sprite
    private var _resp: Responder;
    private var _nc: NetConnection;
    private var tf: TextField;
    private var _gateway: String;
    public function main()
    tf = new TextField();
    tf.width = 500;
    tf.border = true;
    tf.borderColor = 0x0000FF;
    addChild(tf);
          _gateway = 'http://cms.loc/amf';
    _resp = new Responder(onResult, onFault);
    _nc = new NetConnection();
    _nc.connect(_gateway);
    _nc.client = this;
    _nc.addEventListener(NetStatusEvent.NET_STATUS, onNetStatus);
    _nc.call("Amf_Model_Test.greet", _resp);
    private function onNetStatus(event: NetStatusEvent): void
    trace(event.info['code']);
    tf.text = "Status = "+event.info['code'];
    private function onFault(result: Object): void
    tf.text = "Fault = " + String(result);
    private function onResult(result: Object): void
          tf.text = "Result = " + String(result);
    In my browser, I get "Result = hello", as expected. In the stand alone player (which is exactly the same version) I get "Status = NetConnection.Call.BadVersion".

    Hello all !
    Sadly, yet again Apple have ignored the polite requests to offer an alternative download facility - other than the current auto-browser setting, which is impossible if attempting using the stand-alone-download option (via a PC)
    I just wish to up-date an off-line Mac !
    *Could some kind soul with Mac expertise please post me a link to permit me to download the latest Mac up-dates for both iTunes & Quick Time ...*

    Hi,
    I hope that someone can work out the solution to the iTunes riddle too
    Still a riddle ?
    When you use this http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ - scroll a bit down and on the lft side (uder the hardware and software requiremnts) click on the 'Get iTunes for Macintosh' link and you should get the 'MAc OSX' version of the download page, which lets you download the iTunes8.dmg file.
    Or if that dosn't work for you, use MacUpdate.

  • "Stand-alone" Installer Problems

    Hi there.
    I was hoping that there may be someone here who can advise me with a problem we are having with the stand-alone installer.
    The problems we are having suggest that it is in fact not a stand-alone installer, although hopefully someone can prove me wrong!
    After ADE is installed, using the stand-alone installer, no matter how many timnes I attempt to load a document, the DE detector tells me that ADE is not installed, and asks me to install. This is a never-ending loop. That's what happens in IE7.
    In Firefox, the detector does detect it, but halfway through the install it fails.
    The result of this is we can't open DRM protected eBooks on any of our open-access PCs due to ADE not working, even though we have installed it using the stand-alone installer.
    All PCs are XP SP3, browsers are IE7 and FF3.0, and users log into the PCs with basic 'User' privileges. Student's 'My Documents' folder is mapped to a network drive when they log on.
    Can anyone help?
    Kind Regards,

    Open the "Console" application from Application/Utilities folder.
    Select System.log from the log list on the left.
    In the String Matching filter field, type Adobe AIR or Adobe Muse.
    Odds are the console will display the path to where AIR is finding a beta version of Muse.
    If that's not the case, pleaseelect all, and the copy and paste the log into a text file or e-mail and send it to us at [email protected] along with a link to this thread (for context).
