FCP & FCE Resolution

Hello
I want to know what differences in quality(resolution) between FCP and FCE
Thank You
Adolfo

FCE supports DV, HDV and AVCHD fixed resolution video only.
DV can be captured as DV-NTSC/29.97fps or DV-PAL/25fps
HDV and AVCHD are transcoded to Apple Intermediate Codec during capture/ingest.
HDV and AVCHD are supported at 720p30, 1080i50 and 1080i60.
Using DV or Apple Intermediate Codec, you are unlikely to see any qualitative differences between FCE and FCP.
FCP, however, supports many more codecs/frame rates/resolutions.

  • FCP/FCE anamorphic to iDVD - A simple solution?

I posted this over in the iDVD forum, but I would like to get some response from you guys on this matter too.
I have seen a lot of discussions about how hard it is to get anamorphic material from FCP/FCE into iDVD. There seem to be a few complex workarounds using third party software etc.
Today I suddenly came to think about a possible very simple solution.
    1. Export to QuickTime from FCP/FCE
    2. Open the clip in QuickTime Pro
    3. Choose the Window menu and choose Show Movie Properties
    4. Select the Video Track and click the Visual Settings tab
    5. Uncheck Preserve Aspect Ratio
    6. Change the width to 854 (DV-NTSC) or to 1024 (DV-PAL)
    7. Save the clip and quit QuickTime
    8. Open iDVD and start a new 16:9 Widescreen project
    9. Import your modified QuickTime clip
    10. Author and burn your DVD
Is it really this easy? Are there any downsides to doing it this way?
I just tested this workflow, and the finished DVD looked fine.
I prefer using Compressor/DVD Studio Pro my self, but it would be nice to have a simple solution to offer those who ask about bringing anamorphic material from FCP/FCE into iDVD.
I wonder why Apple has not implemented an anamorphic checkbox or something like that inside iDVD. I have not yet found any guidance from Apple on this matter. Have I missed something here?

I gave the usual dimensions for Standard Definition DV Anamorphic as an example. The actual dimensions for DV Anamorphic NTSC and PAL are: 720x480 and 720x576, but when stretched, the right width is 854 and 1024 as mentioned in my first post. The dimentions you are mentioning are for High Definition 1080i/p
If you are editing 720p, the dimentions are: 1280 × 720.

  • FCP/FCE Comparison Chart

Is there a Final Cut Pro / Final Cut Express comparison chart posted anywhere on the web? Apple had one several years back and I can't seem to find that anymore.

I have FCP4 on an old PowerMac, ... I was looking to install Final Cut on a new machine (Either Express or Pro). But I don't want to purchase FCE if there are missing functions that will drive me crazy.
If you own a legitimate copy of FCP 4 you can upgrade to the entire Final Cut Studio suite for $299.99 (USD).

  • FCP FCE interface

I own FCE 3.5.1 and I want to edit a project between my computer and another computer that has FCP 5
Will that interface? How would it work?
    Thanks

I don't have a definite answer but consider this: If you had a project on one computer that was running FCP 6, it wouldn't even work on another computer that has FCP 5. To take it a step further, if you have a project created in FCP 5, it'll ask you to convert it to a FCP 6 project and once you do that, you can't get the project back to FCP 5 to take back to the other computer. You have to stick with the same version. This leads me to believe that you probably cannot do that. I've never tried with FCE before though.

  • Backwards compatibility: FCP/FCE

Hi, I'm brand new here, hope I get this right...
I created a project in FCE 3.5, with extension .fcp. I needed to use the Export to create the .omf files so Pro Tools could finish the sound. I figured I could open the project in FCP (not sure the version, it was new two years ago), then do the export. All media necessary was in a folder on an external usb hard drive, that FCE could deal with problem-free. The clip files are all .avi.
But when I tried to open the project in FCP, I got an error message that the files were of a version too new for FCP. The message instructed me to make a copy using Media Manager, then proceed.
I did that, and created a test file from the first clip in the listed in the bin --> it generated "test1.fcp". There are a total of about 150 clips in the bin, and this one took about 5 minutes to generate.
When I tried to open "test1.fcp" using FCE, I got an error saying that the file had been created using an app too old for FCE.
Am I banging my head against the wall trying to open a FCE project in FCP, or is the message accurate in saying that there's a version mis-match?
Did I do the right thing by using FCP Media Manager to convert the .avi clip to a .fcp file?

You have two problems that are fighting each other, as you've guessed. FCE3.5 is based on FCP5.1 and your version of FCP pre-dates that, so it cannot open the FCE file.
Your media manager solution is going to be painful because AVI is such a horrible format to work with. It's really ancient and will take a huge amount of time to fix by rebuilding every shot. You may be better off simply exporting the tracks from FCE, one track at a time, with 2-pop before and after the program, and take the exported stems to ProTools.

  • FCP - FCE

Can I read a project from Final Cut Pro in Final Cut Express?
    How do I do it?

Please only post on query on the same subject. See my answer to your other post.

  • How do I Ken Burns Video in FCP/FCE?

I've looked around the internet for days. Someone please help!
Is there anyway to Ken Burns VIDEO (not photos--I've seen a million tutorials on that)so there is a pan or zoom type effect.
    If anyone could help, THANKS!

Hmm.... I remember the Apple II CS where internally they were calling the CS for Carl Sagan. He got mad and was going to sue so internally they changed the name to Apple II BA for Butthead Astronomer. We better watch out cause Ken's gonna get mad and then we will all have to quit calling it the Ken Burns effect and change it to something like BP (already has a bad connotation) for Boring Producer Effect.

  • FCE or FCP?

    Hello all,
I'm a complete newbie when it comes to video editing so I wonder why I went and purchased a Canon HV-20 (it's still in the box in case I need/want to return it! LOL)... and an associate at Best Buy told me all I'd need is iMovie HD.
However, there's a class available at a local community college that teaches Final Cut Pro and how to use a camera, etc.
So, I'm thinking about taking the class, but afraid I may be over my head...
I've heard that FCE is very much like FCP so I'm wondering that if I take the class, will I be able to come back on here and use FCE?
Also, it seems an advantage of FCP over FCE is that FCP works with "native" HD while FCE works with AIC (whatever that is!) LOL I read in another forum that native HD will be edited faster than something with AIC? Or is there another advantage of working with native HD over AIC?
Any tips on whether or not I should attempt FCE or FCP or just stick with iMovie HD..would be greatly appreciated.
As I said, I'm quite a newbie and I don't mind reading a manual... I just don't want to get lost within Chapter 1!
    Thanks for any help/advice!

Far be it from me to disagree with my fellow Brit Ian, (Eh up, si thi...) I believe you have 2 options.
    1) Learn iMovie on your own - As Ian says it's free and an excellent program for one who's new to video editing with a learning curve that's not as steep as FCP/FCE. You could then move up later.
The problem with that is that a complete newbie, you have to learn this on your own (unless you are also privy to iMovie classes) and I believe that it's easier to
    2) learn the whole camera/FCP with tuition, than option 1.
My judgement is coloured by the fact that this is how I learned FCP, albeit on a full-time college degree course and I found it the best way but, of course, it's horses for courses. (Incidentally, I also learned iMovie concurrently, but soon decided to focus more on FCP.)
Your decision will be shaped by your requirements - How serious do you anticipate your interest being?
Do you prefer and find it more suitable for you to learn on your own or do you prefer the first hand help of tuition?
Are you prepared to make the additional investment to step up to FCE.
My advice - take the course - get FCE - then upgrade to FCP if and when necessary.

  • A better test -- iMovie 09 verses FCP quality. Can you tell which is which?

So many postings of poor quality from iMovie 09. There are claims of "pixelization," "noise" during motion, interlace artifacts, severe loss of detail, etc. But, are these reports really valid?
And, how true are the assumption that FCE or FCP will not have any such problems. Always the belief that FCE/FCP movies will be really so much better.
Simple test using more demanding video -- upload two exports that have similar contrast because the more contrast the sharper video looks. (The iMovie 09 version was processed as described in my eBook.)
If you are sure FCP, FCE, and iMovie 06 movies look better -- then you should easily be able to tell which movie (Z1 or Z2) was edited by which application. And, even if you can see a difference, which you may, is it SO much better? And, do you see any of the commonly reported defects of iMovie video?
Source clips are 1920x1080i60 MPEG-2. They were not converted to AIC so they are first generation.
Imported by iMovie. An XML export was used to FCP. So the exact same source clips were used by both applications.
Exports from both applications at 1080i60 were made using AIC. Then MPEGStreamclip deinterlaced both to 720p30 H.264 (x264 codec) at 6.4Mbps before uploading. These movies are third generation. (You can download these.) What you'll watch is fourth generation 720p30 Flash.
What about movie Z3? A different process was used. Please leave a comment on how you think it looks compared to Z1 and Z2.
Remember: Motion smoothness is dependent on your internet speed!

    Search for DVC.
Please leave your guesses as Comments.

I can't shoot HDV (unless with my current camera). If i buy another camera, it will be USB. I'm the macbook user. I knew exactly what i was buying also. Surprising how many users get the macbook home and try to plug firewire into the USB and wonder why it doesn't work. How does this happen? I paid more for the fully loaded macbook than a standard macbook pro. I wanted something very portable.
I am concerned about the USB cameras though--many people have had troubles getting imovie to recognize it. oh the drama.

  • NEED HELP FAST!! Importing stills into FCP 6

    Hello everyone,
I have tried searching for a bit, but time is of the absolute essence. I am down to the wire on a project, and need to do some finishing things.
What I need to do is to import still images (from DSLR) into an HD timeline. I am working in an HDV 1080i60 sequence at 29.97 fps. Here is what I am doing...
    - Import the particular image
    - Everything looks fine in the viewer when I double click on it
    - When I take it to the timeline though and open it in the canvas, it looks like absolute sh**. The colors look fine I suppose, but it looks incredibly pixelated.
I have tried exporting the video, thinking that it might just be in the canvas, but that didn't fix anything.
So, it is not a problem with rendering, as some have said where I have searched... It could be a problem with size, but I am not sure.
If anyone knows anything, please post in here or PM me asap. Thank you for your help in advance.
    Cheers,
    Ryan

When you load an image or clip from the Browser into the Viewer, it is displayed at it's native resolution. But once you place it in the Timeline, it displays at the FCP Sequence resolution. Also note that the image will need to be rendered FULLY before viewing. Go to the Sequence->Render menus and make sure all render types are checked ... especially FULL.
Also keep in mind that FCP's Canvas window only shows a proxy of full quality.

  • Importing Sony DVDirect Video on DVD into FCE

    Hello...good wishes,
I've been recording video from a Canon XL2 directly to DVD using a Sony VRD-VC20 DVDirect DVD Burner. When I try to import this video material into Final Cut Express, FCE does not recognize the format.
Apple Support says that the XL2 Camcorder is a supported device in FCE, but is not able to be conclusive regarding video recorded to DVD using the Sony DVDirect Burner.
The only way I've found to get any of this video into FCE is to play the DVD's in a standard DVD player' record the video back onto DV tape, and import them through the XL2. This is a daunting, funky proposition given the hours and hours of video I need to edit - and I worry about degradation of quality using this process.
Are there any third party drivers written out there or do any of you have ideas how I can get this video from DVD to FCE?
    Thanks~

I use a Sony VRD-VC20 to burn Tivo recordings and VHS tapes to DVD. I just picked up a program called Cinematize2. It's a DVD clip extractor that retails for about $50 US. It allows you to set an in and out point on a DVD and extract the clip into a format compatible with FCP/FCE. Previously I used MPEG Streamclip 1.3.1 which allows you to export mpeg2 files to Quicktime, AVI, or DV format for use in FCP/FCE. Mpeg Streamclip also allows you to set in and out points before exporting. The link to download MPEG Streamclip 1.5.1 is: http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html.
In order to use the MPEG2 playback and converter feature you will also need the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component. You can buy it from Apple (www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2) for about $30 US. If you have either Final Cut Pro or DVD Studio Pro, then the component is already installed and you don't have to buy it; but you may need to download the latest version from Apple (www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/download).

  • FCP export settings for import in iMovie '08

Q: What QT/ Compressor export settings do I need to use in FCP in order to be able to import the MOV file in iLife '08?
The reason for using iLife '08 is solely for sharing the movie to dotMac.
(if you know alternatives bypassing iMovie '08 ... be my guest).
    Background:
I create my footage with a Sony HDR-HC7.
I capture the footage on my Macs (G5 and MBP) via FCP.
I edit my sequence in FCP using the HDV sequence presets
I output using FCP export to Quicktime. MOV file has HDV properties.
Funny: the captured MOV file with HDV properties can be read by iMovie '08 , the edited sequence with exactly the same HDV properties can not be read by iMovie '08 .
I tried a Compressor conversion to:
    - Apple preset iTV --> no import
    - Apple preset iPod video --> no import
    - Apple preset m2v and m4v --> both no import
    - Apple preset mp4 --> no import
iLife help mentiones that it accepts DV, mp4 and some MOV formats.
Q: what is the list of "some"
    Please help.
    Coen

Q: What QT/ Compressor export settings do I need to use in FCP in order to be able to import the MOV file in iLife '08?
Don't have FCP v5/6 but with older FCP/FCE usually use AIC for crossover in MOV file container.
iLife help mentiones that it accepts DV, mp4 and some MOV formats.
Q: what is the list of "some"
I have personally used DV, AIC, MJPEG, MPEG4, H.264 and i believe Photo-JPEG with which another individual indicated he was having problems. As to audio for these files, usually use DV, Linear PCM ("Big Endian" Integer), AAC, or even uncompressed. Avoid Apple Animation and Apple Video compression formats which will import/edit but will not correctly export. However, be advised that there are some caveats. E.g., a "Large or Full" slideshow export from iPhoto places the MPEG4/AAC data in an MOV file container which iMovie '08 will not import. However, if you use the MPEG Streamclip "Save As..." File menu option to save the same data in an MP4 file container. Therefore, would say that some problems here may be associated with iMovie '08 "pre-scanning" of files and possible minor bugs in proper error trapping on compression formats vs file containers.

  • Anyone using an nNovia HD with their cam & FCP?

I'm interested in the nNovia drives but wanted to check if anyone has experience using them successfully with FCP. I searched the FCP & FCE forums and there were a few references to Firestore drives but none on nNovia.
I film live events and often have issues with tape length, so I'd like to go tapeless. I'm aware of the 2GB file size limits on the nNovia & Firestore units & can put up with that if they otherwise perform well w/Final Cut.

Well, with miniDV the maximum is 60 mins per tape @ SP. When I've got a Shakespeare production with intermission at t=90+ mins I have a problem with tape length. I've been double-teaming 2 cameras to deal with the intervals where I have to swap tapes & it's a pain in the butt not to mention the occasional problems with having to feed audio to 2 cameras from my mixer. Tapeless would be a great solution.
The Firestore automatically breaks the DV feed every 2GB and begins a new file automatically, sequentially numbered w/o losing any frames. The nNovia must do the same but before I lay out my hard earned $ I wanted to check to see if anyone has experience with them.

  • Workflow for AVCHD 5.1 audio in FCP

I have a Panasonic HDC-TM700 cam using the included 5.1 audio offering. I know it's not "true" 5.1, but I want it anyway.
I 100% understand FCP does not natively support AVCHD, but worse....it mixes down the 5.1 to stereo when I Log and Transfer to any of the available codecs. I know FCP can edit 5.1.
I tried ClipGrab in hopes it would produce a ProRes file w/ 5.1. It did not.
Premiere Elements 9 demo not only allows me to natively edit my AVCHD files shot in both 60i and 60p (no transcode), but it also retains the original 5.1 tracks and can output either a Dolby 5.1 or an AAC 5.1. My issue is I don't know how to edit in Premiere. I've been using FCP for almost 8 years and would prefer not to learn a whole new app.
HDD space is not an issue and 3rd party apps are an expected solution.
I have a hunch I'll have to edit in Pre9 until Apple includes this in FCP/FCE, but wanted to ping all you to see if I've missed a work around somewhere.
    Thanks!

    Hi Pi,
Yes I have setup all channels as you mentioned.  I am not sure if this matters, but I am only given a1 and a2 tabs on the left though.  What I mean by this is that there is the column in between the show/hide audio button and the connecting destination A tracks.  I believe these are the source buttons.  Does that make sense?  Shouldn't I see a matching button for all tracks?
I would also add that my ending goal was to convert this file to multiple file types such as a .m4v so that it will work on aTV and iPads.  I have tried exporting to .m4v from FCP and received a non-specific general error.  If I try the self contained QT option I am downgraded to 2 channel audio which is not ideal.
