FCP Files in PP ...overall acceptance

Did a fair amout of search, but I'm still not clear on this issue...
Just upgraded to CS4 in large part because I need to bridge a huge gap I have in finding freelance editing gigs with all that raw video out there that has been captured using FCP.
I just watched this and the import of FCP projects and SD .movs looks good to go...
http://odeo.com/episodes/23753925-Import-Final-Cut-Pro-projects-into-Adobe-Premiere-CS4
...but, I'm reading that FCP captured in HD is a no go in Premiere.
Questions-
1. Which video files will Premiere CS4 accept from an FCP captured project (I apologize for the lack of specificity) The "will"s and the "won't"s
2. Of the types that do import, do any of them slow PP down to an unusable crawl? ...like .movs did to me in PP 2.0
3.  If FCP captured HD video will not import/work in CS4, is there third party software that can encode the FCP files into something that will work in PP? Before I moved up to CS4 I had to edit P2/MXF video and purchased a Raylight product that converted the files to .avi ...anything out there that will convert FCP HD for the purposes of PP?
I'd love to go trolling for gigs, but I need to know how good the CS4 handshake is with FCP
Thanks!

Chris,
Apparently there has been an issue with FCP Captured files into PrPro. Don't do that, so I have no first-hand experience.
IIRC, the soon to be released 4.1.0 update will have enhanced X-program support between FCP and PrPro. To what extent? Not sure that any of us knows yet, but maybe a report from NAB will shed more light on the issue.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • FCP files will not open after data recovery

We have a TV tech lab in our high school of 15 Apple editing workstations and we archive the completed projects to external firewire drives. Well, wouldn't you know it, one of the drives crashed with all of the previous school years senior projects. The drive would mount, but none of the files were accessible. I sent the drive to a data recovery company and they were successful to a point. They were able to recover the entire drive (about 140 GB). The QT files work fine, but the FCP files are a different story. When I attempt to open an FCP file, I get the error "wrong file type". All of the files do have the correct file extension. Is there anyone out there that has experienced this? Were you able to resolve the problem? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

Milwaukee, eh? My mom grew up in La Crosse...
Can you zip one or more of these files and email it to me? I'll take a crack at it.

  • Can't open FCP file (version 5.1.1)

I have a FCP file file that will not open. The movie file included 1) imported pictures 2) movie footage, 3) several sound tracks (two from Cds and about 5 sound track files from SoundTrak Pro for effects); the movie file has a duration of about 5 minutes. I’ve tried the following (in this order):
    1. Checked the autosave vault. While I can recover the file, I’ve lost 14 hours of editing so I would like to find a better solution.
    2. Moved the Soundtrack files so they are no longer referenceable (moved these to another folder); that didn’t work.
    3. Repaired disk permission s (only had two differences) so I don’t think this was the problem; that didn’t work.
    4. Moved the render files so they are no longer referenceable; that didn’t work.
    5. Moved the media files offline; that didn’t work.
I am using FCP 5.1.1 on OS X Version 10.4.6, on a Dual 2 Ghz Power PC G5, 2 GB DDR SDRAM Memory. I started the project on FCP 5.1.1 I didn’t create the FCP file in an earlier version. I also haven’t moved the files from one disk to another (I created the movie file on my primary drive). I have checked the support postings but can’t find something with exactly the same situation (one of the above items seems to have worked for most people) but I’ve tried these and the FCP file will not open. I would really appreciate your help on this! Thanks.
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I got FCP Rescue and opened the application. There isn't much to this application except "Trash" as I understand it. So, I clicked on Trash. After the third try of reopening the FCP file, it OPENED! Yea, which is great! So, that is good. Thank you for the suggestion; that was helpful!
While I can see the file and can export it to Quicktime; for some reason the movie file will only play about 5 seconds and then stop/start/stop/start, etc. I am using "Safe RT", Playback Video Quality is set to "Low", and Frame rate is "low". I've tried various combinations of these including Dynamic; the movie won't play for more than two-five seconds which makes it very difficult to edit.
I have 40 gigabytes remaining on my hard drive; could this be causing a playback problem? The playback worked fine before I couldn't open the FCP file. For some reason after I opened the file it won't playback smoothly.

  • Quicktime codec for fcp files?

is there a way to view newer fcp files with out purchasing fcp?
any iMovie plugins or quicktime or quicktime pro codecs available?
I have fcp 6.0.6 on an old G5 dual processor runing Tiger 10.4.11, but now have a new MacBook Pro but not newest fcp and some one just gave me a newer fcp project on a firewire drive to simply author a DVD which I find I am unable to accomplish.
    Any free or inexpensive solutions?

Transfer your FCP license to the new machine and upgrade?
Apple will allow that, I've done it before, for Aperture.
The new MacBook Pro quads are like twice as fast as the Dual G5 processors anyway.

  • Password protecting a .FCP file?

I have to use a shared workstation and we can not have separate login accounts. I would like to make sure that other users can not open some project files.
    1. Is there a way to make sure that a .fcp file can not be opened by someone else? password protect it?
    2. what about for a h.264 encoded file?
    Thanks.

Create a small disc image in disk utility large enough to hold the project file.
Pass word protect it, and save the project file to it.

  • Final Cut Pro X not opening .fcp files

I just purchased Final Cut Pro X. I am trying to open a .fcp file that was created in a previous version of Final Cut Pro, however it keeps giving the error "final cut pro cannot open files of this type".
When I look at the details of the file, in shows as a "Unix Executable File", but the extension is still .fcp.
    Can anyone help?

Thanks Tom. So...to open a previous version of a Final Cut Pro file there is no software that I can buy through Apple currently?

  • Is it possible to recover .fcp files from a reformatted drive?

Somehow — I still don't know exactly how this happened, but it appears to be my fault, and I feel like a complete moron for letting it get to this — in the process of reformatting a buggy drive with several FCP 7 projects and media on them, I managed to reformat BOTH the original drive and the back-up drive, thus losing all of the content. I'm now trying to figure out if it is possible to recover as much as possible from the drive so that whatever was on the drive is not a total loss.
I have done a scan with Wondershare Data recovery, which gave me a list of files that it could recover, but aparently it cannot recognize .fcp files, meaning that the media can be recovered (albeit with changed names and a lost file structure), but the project itself can't.
I am now attempting a scan with Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery, but it will be quite a while before I can find out if it sees the .fcp files.
If this doesn't work, I was hoping that someone might know of software that would recognize a .fcp file, which would be a big step closer to as much of a recovery as possible.
Hard drive is a 2TB G-Drive, connected through FireWire 800.
    Thanks a lot.

I had a drive do a graceful swan dive and used an app called FileSalvage to recover the contents before it went totally bad. They were williing to work with me to craft the software to find file types that weren't in their standard database. It worked moderately well.
I thought long and hard about spending the money to send that drive to a data recovery firm (with no guarantee that they'd get more off it that was useable) and decided to spend the same amount on some good single malt. Didn't do much for data recovery but I was much happier.
    Good luck,
    x

  • Trying to COMPRESS FCP file to transfer/burn to DVDPRO

I have a project in FCP, it's 45 minutes long and I need to burn it to a disc. I submitted the file to be compressed and it compressed successfully, but DVD Pro said the files were not compatible. And I used the same AUDIO and VIDEO applications to compress many times before. I keep getting an exclamation point at the top of the project in the cue. I don't know where to look under Troublshooting index to find out the answer. thanks Andy H

    **this is my information...**
I'm EXPORTING a FCP project which is 45 minutes in length. I EXPORT it to COMPRESSOR. COMPRESSOR opens and shows the FILE in up LEFT box where I drag Presets. It gives me the PROJECT NAME but in the little picture box it just shows the FCP ICON. I know when I EXPORT a QT movie of a FCP project, a frame of the project appears in the little box where I drag the presets. This time it doesn't. So I don't know if that's an issue. I'm using DVD preset "DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes". It begins to compress the FCP file which takes roughly 2 hours. I check and it says it's "successful". BUT when I open DVDPRO and import the project to burn there is only ONE FILE not TWO FILES which would be the AUDIO and the VIDEO file. so DVDPRO does not recognize this and it won't burn. What do I do? THANKS for you help. Andy

  • GB, iWeb keep searching for FCP files in their Media Browsers

I recently (as in yesterday) upgraded to iLife '06. I did this primarily to produce a podcast which would be hosted by my .mac site- using iWeb to create it. I repaired permissions, ran MacJanitor, upgraded, restarted, repaired permissions, ran MacJanitor and openened GarageBand. All was fine. I made a new podcast file, connected my microphone, ready to do a test podcast, when the following suddenly popped up:
    Hitting "Stop" didn't do anything.
I waited patiently when eventually this came up:
The options were to search or cancel, but I chose cancel, because I don't need any of my videos (or at least not yet) in GarageBand. The file it is looking for above is a FCP file. It's one of FCP "Render Files" and obviously cannot be read by GarageBand. Unfortunately, after I hit cancel, I get about 7 secs of freedom before a similar message looking for the next of the render files (there are hundreds of them) pops up and then it continues on and on and on...
I don't want GarageBand to process these files, I want it to stop looking! Unfortunately, this same problem occurs with iWeb. So, the two apps I bought iLife for, I can't use. Any guidance in this area would be most appreciated.

    Hi, Hangtime
I've just tested the rename approach (simply added an "a" after "Movies" in the folder name)
Garage Band and iWeb no longer scan the folder for "media browser" content after doing so.
It depends a bit on JC's "workflow" which way would be more appropriate. I guess simply moving the problematic FCP files to another would resolve the problem for him as far as Garage Band and iWeb go, on a permanent basis. But he may need the FCP files in the "Movies" folder for other reasons, in which case simply renaming when using Gargeband or iWeb may be quicker. It would be nice to find a more elegant answer though. I wonder if it could be a "mediabrowser" plist issue?
    Cheers

  • FCP files are damaged or incomplete

When i went to open FCP today it came up with a box saying, "You can't open the application Final Cut Pro because it may be damaged or incomplete."
It is still in my applications folder. But wont open. I tried going into time machine and restoring what files i could find and recopying them onto my HD just in case something was missing. Same thing.
Strangely Compressor doesn't work either. it has a question mark on the link for the dock. spotlight cant find it either.
Motion 3, and DVD Studio both work fine.
Sadly the disks are not with me right now. So an easy fix is not to reinstall right now.

I have FCP 6 and a few other pro apps installed on my MacBook Pro 15" everything was fine. Today I went to install the rest of the Pro apps Motion 3, Soundtrack Pro and after the installation FCP could not be launched and the dock icon was grayed out with a circle and slash thru it and the error message was FCP files are damaged or incomplete. I'm installing again but the installer won't let me just install FCP 6. All the other apps are fine, including the ones installed today. Help please.

  • Can not archive FCP files?

Can anyone come up with a good reason why Final Cut Server won't archive a Final Cut Pro (FCP) project file?
We have over 600GB worth of these files that have all been ingested and analyzed by FCSvr. Therefore the data is now a part of the database and really the FCP files are theoretically not needed any longer.
So why are these files excluded from archival?

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • Opening FCP file in an older version of FCP

I'm trying to open an FCP file sent to me and I'm getting a "General Error (41)" message every time that prevents me from opening the file. I have a feeling it's because the FCP file was created in a newer version of FCP. I'm running FCP 5.0. Is there any way you can save a file in FCP 7.0 (for example) so it can open in FCP 5.0?

The person who sent you the file has to instead send you an XML file of the project. 5.0 I believe needs an XML 2. When you ask them to do it, make sure that the browser window is selected, and NOTHING in the browser is selected (highlighted.) Otherwise you only get an xml of that one thing.
If you type xml files into the search window of this forum, you'll find a little chart of the fcp versions and the applicable XML's for each.

  • Re-install Final Cut Studio 1 Probs with old fcp files and compressor

We crashed our G5 and reinstalled OSX 10.4.8 (Build 8N1430) and FC Studio 1 from original media. In the past (not now) the G5 was connected to the internet and was set to auto-update. I'm assuming and have been told by those working with the system at the time that both FCP and OSX were regularly updated online. We recently re-installed the OS and FCS 1. We have not re-connected the box to the internet; have not updated OS or App software from the versions on installs disks, have not re-registered any software online with apple.
When re-installing the OS, I archived the old system.
    My problems are:
    1) I can't open old fcp files (projects). These fcp files are projects saved both to an external 500G LaCie and saved on the macintosh hard drive. I cannot open old fcp files archived in the previous system folder on the HD. I get the message "General Error 41" when trying to open these files. I also cannot open old (pre-re-install) quicktime files made with old FCP assets.
I can open new projects and files saved since re-install.
    2) (probably related) Compressor will not open and gives me the message "Compressor quit unexpectedly..." I tried a second re-install of DVD studio pro Compressor package. I have a dump of the console crash log for Compressor below.
The G5 in question is currently Not connected to the internet and keeps trying to get online. We have Not re-registered with Apple via the internet either the OS or FC Studio 1 or any of the re-installed software. When I open FCP is asks to reg. Logs show the system trying to get an ethernet connection all the time.
Should I put the box online and register and update? Do I have to do this?
Are the pre-re-installed fcp projects "too-new" for the re-installed (older) FCP to read/open?
In general, I don't want editing bays to be online for these kind of reasons. Is this impossible anymore?
Is it know that Compressor and other elements of OSX and FC Studio can get into versioning issues with online updates such that re-install with cause incompatibility?
    Thanks,
