FCP forum - a bit of a rant

- pass by if you don't hang out here or want to support helpful people. (no humor - only grumpyness...)
One of the great problems with the LAST forum set-up was that if you spent your time helping "new to the forum" users, you often received little if any recognition in the points system. No great insight is required to tell someone to turn on their camera before launching FCP in order to capture, but since each person discovers the forum (and it is only REAL when THEY arrive) this class of response needs to be repeated over and over. As these new users were often totally ignorant of the points system and, since they often only showed up for their one issue then disappeared, they had no incentive to say thank you to those who took the time to help. In their minds, this is all part of the great APPLE machine - why say thank you? However, people who hung around WERE appreciative of things like: humor, community, grumpyness, brilliance etc and recognized the work that was being done.
Now, in the new forum, we have a situation where the ONLY points available are from people - often the new users who are unaware of the format of the forum - who have absolutely no incentive to give feedback. Since these users are either unaware or do not care about the protocols of the forum, no votes for helpfulness/competence are given and the only way a reputation will be built is simply by post count. This seems very wrong to me.
Additionally, I'm noticing fewer of the usual group around here. Perhaps it is me but I am concerned. No one is paid to be here and the only recognition was the points system. Now that seems to be gone or at least seriously compromised ...
So, to new users, if someone has helped you, give them the points. If someone has answered the question, not only mark it answered, give the poster the points. Support the people who help you as they are trying to support you..
rant over. flamesuit on. All responses written on the back of $50 bills will immediately attended to!
cheers.

powerbooks to the left/ jokers to the right/ stuck in the middle ...   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   been there, haven't done this.

I remember the "Helper" system, which relied on Apple granting the status to a community member. The forums seemed to have more direction back then, a tighter focus if you will.
Of course, even then there were irreverent ones, who shall remain nameless ... with seemingly no ambition to be classified a "Helper" as such, but posted for the communities sake. Many still active.
Not sure at all about the whole points thing which seems to have had a filter applied to it.
And speaking of filters - I had a grip drop his tousers the other day and wiggle his but at the camera. So capture everything b/c there was audio involved, applied Broadcast Safe - and he's still there .. wiggling. I mean that's gotta be a bug, right ?

  • Apple intermediate codec VS apple fcp uncompressed 8 bit 4:2:2

    i'm still very new here.
have FCE and therefore don't have apple pro res.
i'm getting mixed suggestions as to what format to use for highest quality.
i get better results playing back apple intermediate codec in FCE but want to know if its quality is as good as apple fcp uncompressed 8 bit?
ultimately want to output as quicktime H.264
    thanks

    "but don't i Want HD? i'm shooting with the canon 5D M2."
Yes, you do. But how would I know that you're shooting in HD or that you're using this camera? The Apple uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2 codec is only used with standard definition media.
BTW, FCE is not the best application to work with this camera as it shoots in a non-standard video frame rate. Your media would have to be converted to QuickTime using AIC at 29.97 with uncompressed 48k audio. FCP allows you to create a sequence preset in 30fps, the frame rate used by this model.

  • Is FCP 7 64-bit ?

    Hello,
I read the technical specs of FCP 7, but I cannot find if it is 32-bit or 64-bit software.
I also heard that FCP 6 only uses max. 2 GB RAM. Is that also valid for FCP 7 ?
    Thanks,
    Hubert

    Andy,
Quicktime X is 64-bit but, anything that requires a plugin or almost all the formats you would work with in FCP are not handled by Quicktime X. Quicktime 7 is doing that.
Don't take my word for it (I don't 'cause I don't know jack).

  • For FCP forum.. blur face again...I know have read previous but...help

    Posted: Nov 5, 2006 3:52 PM
ok am using fcp5.1 on g5 and am very new to fcp...used to use another program but this is different...
placed the original file on v1 and a copy on v2.
have hidden v1 so i don't get confused.
just need to block out a small piece of video
i dropped a mask shape on canvas v2 - ok
went to filters screen behind viewer window - can't make adjustments in mask shape parameters...they don't show up...
image and wire frame ok...got that..but if i make it smaller it just reduces in size not cropping in shape
    Am I missing something?
have tried the cops tutorial ...looks easy...but can't get the result
    pls help

Once you drop a filter on a clip you need to double-click on it again to load it back into the viewer with the filter. THEN you can make adjustments..click on the FILTER tab.

  • FCP Ignoring rotation bit

    Morning,
Imported P2 Data from HVX using the RedRock system so the image comes in upside down. Opened clip in Quicktime Pro, under Show Movie Properties, selected video track/visual settings. Rotated the clip so it views correctly now. Save the clip, bring he clip into FCP and it still shows it upside down. Bring the clip into Motion, no problem it's showing correctly. I have tried the clip in other programs and the problem does not appear, it's only in FCP that the Rotate parameter is getting ignored. Where or how do you report a bug to Apple for FCP??
    Thanks,

  • Forum a Bit Slower but Better with Read Tracking Enabled

Yesterday morning I spend upwards of an hour catching up on the forums here that I visit, posting responses, etc. until I felt I had found everything I wanted to look at.  Today, by contrast, though (from where I sit) the response time is definitely a few seconds slower for each individual operation with Read Tracking enabled, I got through all the new posts in about 10 minutes.  And it was FAR more pleasant to do.
It's not intutively obvious that this one little feature could be so important, but rest assured that it is.  This is a penny foolish and pound wise change.  It's good to know those can still occasionally happen.
Thank you for re-enabling Read Tracking!
If you do have future problems with it, please try harder to fix the problems rather than disabling the feature.
    -Noel

For what it's worth, today it seems as snappy as ever to me.  Really good.
But it IS a Sunday after all.  I imagine the load is quite different than on a weekday when people are trying to get answers to questions while they do their jobs.

  • Tumbleweeds in the FCP forum -

I've been gone from the forum for a while. Oh my, how have things changed.
The fourth post in the forum has been sitting without response for 6 hours. Wow.
I guess the changes Apple made REALLY cut the life out of this place.
... cue the theme from "the Good the Bad and the Ugly" ...

Older product, not many new users = less questions.  Less questions =  people coming to forum less often to answer questions.  The changes made to the forums also had an effect on the number of posts, at least in my experience. A forum I visit frequently had a very noticable drop in posts immediately after the change and it has stayed low ever since.

  • How do you get in FCP forums based in other countries?

    e.g. France, Germany and Switzerland
I think could view these forums a few years ago.

Unfortunately Apple Discussions are only available in the english language. You can view the rest of Apple.com in different languages by going to the home page of  and selecting the language you'd like from the menu located at the bottom of the home page.
You may also consider using a translator. Just google french english translation or similar and copy/paste the discussion to have it translated respectively.

  • 8 vs 10-bit (FCP) image processing.

Is there a noticeable difference between FC Express (8-bit) vs FCP 5 (10-bit) image processing (my DV camera is 12-bit)?
    Thanks for the info!

    FCE isn't 8-bit.
According to the Apple website, FCE uses 8-bit image processing (while FCP 5 uses 10-bit):
    http://www.apple.com/finalcut/index.html
    (scroll down to "editing" section)
And your DV camera being 12-bit? That is referring to the AUDIO.
I have a Panasonic DVX100B, and the audio is PCM 16 bit, 48 KHz sampling. I am refering to the image processing. The video analog-to-digital converters are 12-bit, but you're right DV is quantized to 8-bit.
FCP 5 handles not only DV, but UNCOMPRESSED 8-bit and 10-bit formats. FCE does not...it only handles DV. Noticable difference? Only to an engineer who scrutinizes the image.
So, FCP 5 only uses 10-bit processing when working with uncompressed files? Thanks for the info. Sorry, I'm still a little confused.
If I'm working in standard-definition DV, will FC Express still give me the best image quality available?

  • "Milky" Results When Exporting from AE to FCP

I've been using After Effects for years now to create graphics for our Avid projects, which have always been great! Now that we're using FCP, I'm not exactly happy with the results of my QT graphics exported from After Effects to FCP: they're extremely "milky" and faint when viewed from FCP over an NTSC monitor. I have tried various codecs when exporting: DV/NTSC, Animation, Component-- all with the same results.
I have read other threads with similar comments (even the thread that mentioned "milky" results when exporting from FCP to AE and back) but none of the suggestions/remarks helped in my situation.
I'm sure others have experienced this. Any suggestions?
    Settings:
After Effects comp: NTSC/DV Preset (720 x 480, lower field, etc.)
Export Codecs: DV/DVCPro-NTSC, Animation, Component (same milky results)
Final Cut: Sequence Preset DV/NTSC 48 Khz
Also tried using, as one thread suggested, the "Uncompressed 8 bit NTSC 48 Khz" preset and nothing better
Side note: I'm using Final Cut in this system with both DV video and Betacam, using an Aja card. Both DV and Beta results look the same (going straight thru the decks-to-NTSC monitor).
And yes, I've checked the NTSC monitor-- a Sony Trinitron PVM-20 monitor. And I've looked at the results on other monitors and even regular TVs. Milky faint video all around.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

You might want to post this in the FCP forum next door; this for Final Cut Express

  • New Website Offering 10 Very Slick FCE/FCP Plugins.

Gogiangigo from the FCP forum has been developing Effects, Transitions and Generators for FCE/FCP.
These are very slick plugins which should be useful to FCE editors.
The site also has some very professional looking video demos/tutorials showing every plugin in use.
You are welcome to download the plugins free of charge but Gogiangigo will not object if anyone donates a few pennies (or more!) as the site costs quite a bit to run and the plugins take time to produce.
Donations would no doubt ensure that new plugins are developed and added.
I am sure he would be interested in hearing suggestions for new filters but don't ask for an "Instant Auto-Edit Plugin"!
    http://www.videonline.co.uk/Luca_Plugins.htm

An update to my original posting ............. Apparently gogiangigo had over 700 visits to his site yesterday and some 600 downloads.
In view of the interest shown, he has opened a blog where folk can ask questions or discuss current, new and proposed plugins.

I'm sure he would appreciate any input, be it help, comments or suggestions.

  • CS3 Mac: No Uncompressed 10-bit codec available

We have a roomful of machines here with the CS3 Suite on them, as well as blackmagic codecs installed, and Final Cut Studio. The Blackmagic codecs are available to us, but Apple Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 does not appear available to us to render with in After Effects. This is a huge problem because our clients ask for this codec (not blackmagic or aja, specifically) as as delivery spec. We've got other problems dealing with this codec in the Apple suite of tools as well, but that's a separate discussion for Apple forums. This has been driving us mad for weeks now!
    Any ideas?

Mylenium - I bet you can understand my frustration after not knowing what is going on for a long time now
Adolfo! Removing Blackmagic and AJA from that folder allowed UC10B to show up!
However, I notice a strange anomaly - If I have neither AJA or BMD in the folder, I get "Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2" available to me. If I put AJA *back*, I get "Apple FCP Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2". How bizarre? How do I know which setup to use?
I guess in theory you have solved my problem. Though now it presents a new one - How to get blackmagic *and* apple FCP available at the *same time*. I think I will have to ask Blackmagic support about it though.
Thank you!! and to Mylenium too!

  • Exporting files for use in FCP 7

I'm working on an animated project right now where I draw individual images in Photoshop, save them as PNGs, and then bring them into AE CS4 as image sequences. I now have a bunch of individual scenes that I want to trim and edit in FCP 7, but I keep having problems trying to open the .mov files in Final Cut. I've been using the Animation codec to maintain quality, but FCP can't seem to open all of the files.
Oddly, it can import some of these scenes (seemingly at random, I use the same settings for each) but others get the error message: File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown. I know this question should maybe be posted at an FCP forum, but I was wondering if I would have better results using different settings to export out of AE? Perhaps 10 bit uncompressed or just PNG sequences? There is no sound to worry about as of yet...
    Thanks in advance!

MpegStremclip is THE Swiss Army Knife, when it comes to conversion, a 100% reliable, it IS absolutely free (any download a dollar = Stefano would be a millionaire!), I dare to say it is THE most recommended 3d party tool in the editor community ....
How & why you need to install the mp2 plug-in does Signore Cinque explain in simple words on his website:

  • Exporting from FCP to FLV

I have begun to produce multimedia features (audio slide shows, stills combined with audio, no video yet) using FCP. I bit the bullet and bought the whole Final Cut Studio because I figured I would need many of the programs in the suite.
My first sizable client wants me to deliver the features not as QT files, but as .flv flash files. Is there a way to export my FCP project as an .flv file for this client with what I already have (all the FCP Studio apps) or do I still need to buy additional software? I have been researching this a bit and what I've come across so far are the following options:
    1. buying flash and thus being able to export via compressor (but this seems like overkill considering flash is very expensive and I don't need it for anything else)
    2. buy Sorenson Squeeze, but this also seems like an expensive option at $500 - 600.
    3. I read somewhere on this forum that you can export to H.264 using compressor, and then simply change the suffix from .mov to .flv. Does anyone know if this really works?
To date most of my clients ask me to deliver content as QT .mov files, or in some cases make DVDs for them. I am unenthusiastic about spending $5-600 for Sorenson Squeeze unless there is no other good way, as this is the only client who has requested delivery in .flv files for their flash web server.
Is there any other high quality, reliable way to do this within the Final Cut Pro Studio set of apps, or do I have to invest more money?
Any thoughts or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Paula Lerner

I have been doing some research and testing, and for anyone who's interested I have some new information, and also a few new questions.
My One to One Apple trainer turned me on to something called MPEG Streamclip which is a free download (just google it for the link). I tested it and the result was pretty decent. I also discovered that there is a less expensive Squeeze option called Squeeze 5 for Flash ($199) and Squeeze 5 for Flash Pro ($299). Beyond the $39 Flix Standard that G. mentioned here, On2 also makes Flix Exporter, which is a plug in for Final Cut Pro, and costs $199. I will be testing it shortly.
My question now is has anybody on this forum been using the Flix Standard, or either Squeeze 5 for Flash (pro or non-pro version), and have any opinions as to how they compare? I'm trying to figure out the relative pros and cons to each one so I can make an informed decision.
    Thanks for any feedback.
