check your energy saver settings in your system
preferences. sounds like maybe you're letting your
system sleep and letting your drives spin down?
those are no-no's!
I have checked put display to sleep, and screen saver after 2hours. On divers or system i'ts set to never.

  • FCP freezes after hiding

Using fcp X 10.0.9 it freezes after it was hiding. Only the main menu at the top of the screen is still somehow accessible. Opening the "about"-window lets it freeze on the screen. No way to get rid of it except by quitting the program. Anybody had the same experience?

    No but try this  ........
Many weird things happen as a result of corrupt preferences which can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that only  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.

  • FCP Freezes after sitting idle then coming back to it

About a month ago, I reformatted my hard drive on my macbook pro and did a clean install of my FCP software (v6). I also got a new external hard drive (Seagate Freeagent Desk for Mac 2 TB, FW800) where I keep all my footage I'm working with. Since then, I've started experiencing a problem I've never had before... often I'll have FCP open, then open up a browser window to write emails or whatever. But then when I try to go back to FCP, it freezes and I get the spinning beachball. From that point, I have to force restart the computer to re-open FCP, because FCP won't fully quit once that's happened. If I just force quit, it goes away from the screen, but the dot on the dock is still there, and it won't reopen.
This definitely only started happening after I reformatted my HD, but I also got the the new hard drive at the same time... I thought at first it was the Hard Drive not waking up, but I returned the HD for a new one, and it's still doing it. So based on that, it seems like it must be an issue with the macbook. Weird thing is though... it doesn't seem to happen when older hard drives are plugged in, ones that I had before I reformatted my hard drive.
No idea what to do at this point...

I agree, sounds like disc sleeping problems with that drive, found this in a quick search

  • FCP FREEZES AFTER PERIOD OF INACTIVITY

    Running FCP 5 onPowerPC Powerbk G4, 1.67
    OS: 10.4.11
Whenever I leave the program just sitting there with no activity (usually at least 1/2 hr or longer) the canvas freezes. The audio plays and pretty much everything else is functional.
My only known solution is to close and reopen FCP. I've been editing this one project for several months and the problem has only appeared in last several weeks.
    thank you.

Absolutely no way to even start guessing. But that's never stopped me.
Usually associated with the sleep function.

  • FCP 4.0 issue - using capture now, freezes after 5 minutes

Capturing miniDV to FCP 4.0 using capture now on external drive. Never had any problems in the past, but now FCP freezes after a little more than 5 minutes of capturing. I have to force quit. When I find the file on my hard drive it's about 10 GB. Haven't used FCP in several months. Is it possible some settings got screwed up? No problem capturing via iMovie 4.0 so the problem doesn't seem to be with the drive.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Just to reiterate what Shane and David told you. Updating to QT 7.4 is probably not going to solve your issue. It might make things worse though. You need to do what they said and get your quicktime version they recommended. Now, if it works for you, fantastic, but there have been enough posts on this topic and chances are very slim to null that QT 7.4 will work for your version of Final Cut.
And please be prepared to do an erase and install if the archive and install does not work.
One more idea might be to use a program called Pacifist. (Search the forum for Quicktime and Pacifist) You may be able to use that. Anyone can correct me if I am wrong here.

  • After  i have upgraded to Lion OS, this computer has become the worst computer on this planet. Everything is so slow as if i am in 1990's, where you can click on something and take a coffee break. Constantly get errors on MS Outlook and all applications

After  i have upgraded to Lion OS, this computer has become the **** computer on this planet. Everything is so slow as if i am in 1990 where you can click on something and take a coffee break. Constantly get errors on MS Outlook and all applications are taking for ever to open up. If you guys can't fix it i am going to throw this out the window. Completely fed up with this. Have always loved apple but this is the worst experience i have with the MacBook Air and its not even 1.5yr old.

There are two ways to upgrade to Lion - one is to install Lion overtop of the existing Snow Leopard and the other is to erase the hard drive, install Lion, and then migrate your applications and user accounts. This second option takes a good deal longer than the first so the preferred method for most is the first method and in most cases it works fine. But not in all.
captfred has told you what I'd start out doing if it were my computer. There's a good chance that you can identify an application or plug-in that's causing the problem. Upgrading the involved item(s) can solve the problem. Of all the Lion upgrades I performed I had a couple that weren't completely successful even though I'd looked for programs and plug-ins that needed upgrading first. I missed a few but I found them after the fact and had happy computers.
There was one computer that still had problems. With this computer I reinstalled Lion right over the old version. (If you didn't keep a copy you'll need to download it first.) I still wasn't satisfied so with that computer I rebooted into the recovery partition (Command R after restarting) formatted the hard drive, installed Lion and then migrated. That did solve the problem.

  • FCP HD freezes after exporting

Every time I export to a Quicktime Movie reference movie, FCP freezes. The Quicktimes are fine and the burned DVD's are perfect. I've tried the usual suspects,i.e. trashing preferences downloading all the pro apps, but no joy. In the overall scheme of things the glitch is more annoying than a serious problem, but having to force quit FCP and reboot the machine doesn't seem like the best long term operating procedure. Ideas?

Shane's Stock Tip Mantra: If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the appropriate version of FCP Rescue at http://fcprescue.andersholck.com/ and run it.
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

  • FCP crashes after a few minutes of inactivity

    Hello everyone,
The last few days I have a very annoying problem.
That is: as soon as I don't perform any actions on FCP
for let's say, 2 minutes, and then start again the program completely crashes with even no possibilty to use 'force quit'.
I must say: before this problem arrived there had always been this wellknown spinning circle on my screen after a short break but only for about ten seconds and then everything worked fine again. But now the circle starts spinning to go on on endlessly.
Trying to solve the problem so far I threw away my caches-file, closed all other programs, made some extra space on my hard disc but nothing seems to help so.
I haven't updated anything or changed any settings as far as I know.
I have some experience but I'm certainly not an expert so I hope you have a few suggestions for me.
    Best regards,
    Robbie V., Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

fcp has a problem when the hard disks spin down which is activated by the energy saver prefences. Go to your system preferences:energy saver and turn this off.

  • Gain control freezes after a certain point (cannot get highlights to 100) with colorwheel mode

I just purchased Adobe CC, (Switching from FCP 7, did not want to upgrade to FCP X).  Really loving SpeedGrade (was an Apple color user)
I am using a standard iMAC keyboard and magic mouse (iMAC 27")
In colorwheel mode:  After setting the blacks to 0 with the offset wheel, I try to move the gain wheel to the right, to get my highlights to 100.  Even when holding shift, I have to click and drag several times to move the pointer.  I cannot move it in one motion.  Even then, the pointer will literally stop or "freeze" at about the 3 o'clock position.  In order to get my highlights to 100, I have to switch to the Editbox mode and scroll the numbers up manually.  I cannont do it with the colorwheel mode.
    Very frustrating.  Any advice?

Thank you so much for your prompt response.  After I posted my question, I looked online and found some users had the exact same issue and found the solution.  It is in the way you move the mouse:
When clicking on the indicator for a color wheel, my impulse was to move the mouse in a downward circular motion, to mimic the round path of the wheel.  This appears to not work and makes the indicator "freeze" after a certain point.
When clicking on the indicator and then moving the mouse laterally, directly to the left or right on a mouse pad (or desk), it moves the color wheel indicator all the way down to either end.  When moving the mouse this way, it seems to work.  I hope I’m explaining this clearly.
To answer your question, yes the issue was with the Offset and Gamma wheels as well.  But since the particular adjustment for these was not as much, I didn't realize it.  But the gain adjustment I was doing was more severe, which is why I thought it was just the gain wheel adjustment.
So it appears it was the way you move the mouse to adjust the color wheel - which should be left and right.
I really am enjoying Speedgrade much more than Color.  I was a huge Color fan as well and very upset when Apple discontinued it.  I am very happy I found SpeedGrade and look forward to learning it more in depth.  My next challenge is to find out how to use the SG color wheel controls to mimic curve adjustments.

  • Capturing problem: camera recognized, but fcp freezes

Just started using fcp 5.1.2 (used to use 4.5 on my G4) after getting the new macbook pro and its my first time capturing video with it from my Canon GL-2. The video doesn't show up in the logging window, when I press play it still says preview disabled. When I try to capture the clip it rewinds to the point on the tape and starts playing, but the computer still says its cuing the video. The camera just keeps playing and fcp freezes and I have to force quit. It seems the device is recognized fine and is able to be controlled, but the video isn't coming through or something. Any idea what the deal is? Thanks ahead of time.

Do you have firewire drives connected to the computer?
If so, what happens if you remove them and capture directly to the system drive?
if it works, you need to create a second firewire bus for the camera. Look into an Expresscard 34 firewire card.
If it doesn't work, try the Quicktime Reinstall.
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
    Good luck.

  • My Mac freezes after waking up

I have a rMBP mid 2014 that keeps freezing after sleep, but not every time, since I upgraded to latest Yosemite 10.10.3. I can move the mouse and close all active programs, but it takes long time and will anyway not restart after that. I have to force power off and then power on again, then it will work for a while.
I have tried to do the upgrade again och even tried to reinstall Yosemite again, but it didn't help. Here's a report:

Rid the MBP of CleanMyMac.  It may very well be the source of your problems.
NO so called cleaning or performance applications should be installed in a Mac.  At best they will do nothing, at worst they can corrupt your system.
    Ciao.

  • HD Channels freeze after 5 minutes

Since the launch of BT sport my HD channels including new BT sport freeze after about 5 minutes.  Help suggests I restart Home Hub and BT vision box. This gets the system going for the next 5 minutes.  Note this is the behaviour whether accessing BT sport or BBC1 HD.  I can actually get the channel to unfreeze by simply changing channels so its not really necessary to reboot all the boxes.  Unfortunately this approach does not work when trying to record your favourite football team.
Other details: BT Vision box is connected to Home Hub by powerline adaptors and I often get a message with error VMC999 complaining of a slow connection.
What is particularly irritating is that I have a new Samsung smart TV which displays all HD channels perfectly (via Freeview) and seamlessly streams HD on demand content by connecting wirelessly to the BT router.
I have made two attempts this week to contact BT (0800...) but abandonned them as there are'nt enough hours in the day.
So what I propose do is to "enjoy" my "free" BT sport channels (I have infinity account), cancel my BT Vision subscription (if BT ever pick up the phone) and subscribe to Netflix, Blinkbox, etc.
If anyone has any practical or technical suggestions please comment.

Did you manage to try using an ethernet cable rather than the power line adapters (PLA's)? Did this solve the problem? As others mentioned the PLA's are probably causing the VMC999 error. You need a reliable connection to the Vision+ box for the multicast channels to work smoothly. Being live channels they have to work in a slightly different way to on-demand content.
If after trying a cable you still get the multicast channels freezing after approx 5 mins every time you try to view/record them then you are not the only one. In that case I suggest you read this thread I created a while back. I got it fixed for my line, but it still seems to be affecting some customers now. Get your stopwatch out!

  • I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.

I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.  I will post my computer's 'specs' below.  I installed Lion, from Snow Leopard, through the App store.  The first week, it worked like a dream, and was loving my brand new computer, or so it seemed.  I then began to run into problems, and I can't confirm this 100%, but I believe it was after I updated from 10.7.1, to 10.7.2.
The freezes are sporatic at best, and cannot be narrowed down to one app.  I googled the issue about two weeks ago, and found a fix involving a temporary log-in, verifying the disk, restarting the computer holding CMD+R, and repairing the disk from there.  That fixed the problem.  For about three or four days.  From there I brought my laptop to Best Buy, where I purchased the computer (start the groans, my dad wanted the accidental damage, and he was paying, there was no argument).  My warranty there was still good, but all they were offering was to check my hard-drive, and possibly ship it out.  That would not be good for me, as I am a High School student, who works online.
So I then decided to go to the Apple store, see what they said.  They said a bunch of people had this problem, it would cost a lot to fix, as I would need a new Logic Board.  This did not make any sense to me, as I knew it was Lion's fault, so why would they not make the L-2009MBP Logic Board compatible, and why are only a few people having this problem, well a lot more than a few, but I mean not everyone.
So I asked a friend about it, and we decided to run a back up, and erase the computer, and re-install Lion.  Figuring maybe my data was corrupted during install.  This helped for a day or two, and happened again.  So this time, we backed up only files (music, pics, documents, etc.,) and did a fresh install.  I got my computer back last night.  Now, I am not saying that didn't help.  Previously I would have frozen about 18 times well writing this, but I have not frozen once (hopefully I didn't just jinx myself).  I have gone from about one freeze every 10-15 minutes (sometimes worse), to about one every 1-3 hours.  Which, let's be honest is still a lot.
So, before I just decide to go and revert to Snow Leopard on my merry way, I ask, do any of you have any other ideas?  Or guarenteed fixes?  I know a guarentee is a hard thing to ask for, but I am desperate, my teachers are getting angry with me for not sending work, and I know this would help a lot of people.  Thank you to those who read through my whole spiel, and thank you to those who will help me!
[Ps, while I am somewhat of a noob, I know my way around a computer, so any help, or knowledge you could bestow upon me is awesome.  Especially DIY fixes.  (if your only advice is, don't buy a mac at Best Buy, don't bother commenting)]

Once it is downloaded you need to restart the computer if it does not restart automatically. When it next starts up you should note a progress bar appearing below the Apple logo. When done the computer will restart once more. The new firmware should now be installed.

firefox 4 freezes after i open it (keeps loading the page non-stop and i cant click or do anything, plus there is no option to report an error so i cant even get this checked and this seems to be the case on 3 different computers i use all have windows 7 32bit.

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
