FCP Freezes after sitting idle then coming back to it

About a month ago, I reformatted my hard drive on my macbook pro and did a clean install of my FCP software (v6). I also got a new external hard drive (Seagate Freeagent Desk for Mac 2 TB, FW800) where I keep all my footage I'm working with. Since then, I've started experiencing a problem I've never had before... often I'll have FCP open, then open up a browser window to write emails or whatever. But then when I try to go back to FCP, it freezes and I get the spinning beachball. From that point, I have to force restart the computer to re-open FCP, because FCP won't fully quit once that's happened. If I just force quit, it goes away from the screen, but the dot on the dock is still there, and it won't reopen.
This definitely only started happening after I reformatted my HD, but I also got the the new hard drive at the same time... I thought at first it was the Hard Drive not waking up, but I returned the HD for a new one, and it's still doing it. So based on that, it seems like it must be an issue with the macbook. Weird thing is though... it doesn't seem to happen when older hard drives are plugged in, ones that I had before I reformatted my hard drive.
No idea what to do at this point...

I agree, sounds like disc sleeping problems with that drive, found this in a quick search

    Even simpler than that.
Clicking once in a text box selects it.
Clicking once in a selected text box places the insertion point in the box.
The clicks do not need to be close enough in time to be read as a double click.
The same behaviour applies to table cells in Pages and in Numbers.

  • G5 freezing, fading to blue screen, then coming back and fading again

A few days ago, the G5 started to show strange behavior, which leaves it unusable. During work, shortly after system finishes booting up, the whole screen on both Apple monitors fades to blue, then after some time, it comes back to the desktop with whatever was being worked on, and then it will fade away again. During that time the system is unresponsive, with key presses registering as much as minutes later. Also, when faded to blue, fans rev up and down continuously.
Any ideas? I saw some people have similar issues, but no solutions found...

I am not sure what kind it is, I wont know till tomorrow (it's not at my home). Also, the origional CD that came with it is lost, is there a way to download the hardware test cd image? My other Apple PowerMac G5 CD didnt work (said the hardware wasn't supported or something)

  • Keyboard and trackpad freeze after being idle for a few minutes

I have a early 2008 MBP and just today the keyboard and trackpad freeze after not using it for a few minutes.  I was at work when it happened.  I plugged it in and started doing something else and a few minutes later came back and i couldn't move the mouse or do anything with the keyboard, but processes were still running.  For example, I have a fan speed app that sits in the toolbar, and it was still showing current fan speed.  So I restarted it, and it did it again.  So the next time it happened, I closed the lid and opened it up and it fixed it.  It's happened several times now after a few minutes of non use and I just close the lid and it fixes it.  Also, there was a period when I was using my computer for a couple of hours non stop and it didn't have a problem.  Only when I'm not touching the keyboard or trackpad does it do it.  since this keeps happening i have verified the disk in disk utility, done a hardware reset with cmd+opt+p+r, ran through system profiler to see if there were any problems with no results, and it still does it.  Anyone have any ideas?
It should be noted that not only does the battery not work for more than about 2 minutes, the left I/O board appears to be dying.  The power chord takes a considerable amount of wiggling and adjusting before it finds a place where it will actually charge. The audio out and the USB on that side are the same way. So I am aware of that problem. Also, I have had to take out the right side fan multiple times and disassemble and oil the bearing because it's going bad, which requires taking the top plate off, but I haven't had to do that for over 6 months. In my mind if the problem was caused by taking the top plate off, that would fry the entire top plate, which happened once when a technitian at a local company took the computer apart for a waranty repair.  All of these problems considered, I don't think they would have anything to do with the fact that the mouse and keyboard suddenly won't work after about 5-10 minutes of sitting idle. I have done nothing different since yesterday that would explain why it does this.
Also, I can't do anything with the install disk because the CD drive is dead.  But that's mostly because it was a piece of garbage to begin with.
    Any Ideas would be helpful.

After doing some more digging I was watching processes in Activity Monitor to see if I could see what process is failing.  I think the problem with with Chrome. It only happened when Chrome was open. And since then I reinstalled it and the problem has so far gone away.  So, I think the problems is solved.

  • Won't print after sitting idle for a while

Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. I have to turn the printer off and back on after it sits idle for a while. The printer shows on line in the control panel until you try to print then it goes off line. Wireless network Windows 7.

Hello LARMC, and welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I see you are experiencing idle issues.  I would like to help.
I would recommend performing a power reset.  Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I would also suggest downloading and running the HP Print and Scan Doctor.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • Bluetooth adapter issue after being unplugged then plugged back in

I am running 10.7.4, MacBook Pro 2 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB Ram, Thunderbolt Display with Apple wired Keyboard and Apple Magic Mouse.
    Initial issue:
After using the Magic Mouse for a few months I noticed a significant performance issue with the mouse when the internal hard drive would spin up for large data transfers, Time Machine backups, etc.  I spoke with Apple Care and tried a number of things, tried switching the wireless network, all with no sign of a fix in the future.  I paired the mouse with other computers and could never re-create the issue.  I also paired other Bluetooth mice with the laptop and could not re-create the issue.  After doing further research I found a number of people on-line that started to use an external Bluetooth adapter which would bypass the internal one.  After purchasing one from Amazon, the results were immediately superior.  I had plugged the adapter into the underside of my Apple wired keyboard and performance was as expected.
However, this has led to issue number 2:
My MacBook Pro will travel with me often therefore requiring me to unplug it from my "desktop" setup which is it plugged into a Thunderbolt Display, and the display has all of the peripheral plugged in including the wired keyboard with the external Bluetooth dongle plugged into it.  When I have had my computer away form the set up for a few hours/days and then come back to plug it in, all external devices work immediately with the exception of the magic mouse.  It will sometimes work fairly quickly, within a minute of plugging into the Thunderbolt display, and sometimes I am unable to make it work at all unless I restart the machine.  This issue has happened with and without the Thuderbolt display.  Any assistance is greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Never got a green light.. does that mean no light at all.. or is it flashing amber??
The series 1 particularly but it happens in series 2 and 3 the TC power supply breaks. Then if you power down and turn it on again it is dead. No light at all. The power supply was on the edge and after powering off does not have the ability to supply start current to the TC so shuts down.. If you plug in after a while the light my flash briefly and go out.. it will not happen again until you wait a few hours for the caps to discharge.
If you have Apple Care on a computer and the TC is less than 3years old Apple will replace it.. otherwise you are joining a large and ever growing multitude of dead TC owners.

  • X200 lockups after sitting idle

I have a x200 that lockups when sitting idle for a while. I have the computer not set to go to sleep only turn the monitor off when on AC power.
It is running Windows Vista Business.
    Please help.

Possibly I've got the same problem on my X200. Here are the descriptions:
    System config:
Thinkpad X200 (with 2G original DDR3, 5100agn, bluetooth, fingerprint reader, integrated camera. WITHOUT turbo memory.)
    Windows XP SP3
With all drivers and necessary softwares downloaded and installed from official source (most of them using System Update).
    Hibernation is on.
Screensaver is on (e.g., 5 minutes).
Password on resume from screensaver is on.
And the problem is like this: when I leave the machine idle for 5 minutes or more, then it enters screensaver. Then I come to the machine to enter, and the problem comes:
If it's the first time that I want to return from screensaver since system startup, the screen will show nothing but the system wallpaper and a mouse pointer. Yes, only wall paper, no logon window, no taskbar, even no task manager after Ctrl-Alt-Del. BUT, after 2 minutes or so, the logon window would appear. I can return to the desktop by either password or fingerprint.
However, if it's not the first time that I return to desktop from screensaver, such problem won't occur. I wonder what the problem is, and whether it's the same one that wreed encountered. I tried to disable and enable hibernation, disable or enable the fingerprint reader, but none worked. All the drivers and software are official...
PS, the machine comes with another problem: after hours of use, when I shutdown the machine, winlogon.exe would report an error, and then bluescreen and reboot. I'll try to catch the detailed information and post another post here.

  • IPhone loses cell signal after sitting idle

My iPhone will lose the signal bars when sitting idle for a period of time. After shutting down the power and restarting the bars come back. Any recommendations?

No recommendations, but I've been experiencing the exact same problem for about a month now.
It's also interesting that after I reset the iphone I get a message on itunes asking me to send my crash information to Apple!

  • FCP freezes after hiding

Using fcp X 10.0.9 it freezes after it was hiding. Only the main menu at the top of the screen is still somehow accessible. Opening the "about"-window lets it freeze on the screen. No way to get rid of it except by quitting the program. Anybody had the same experience?

    No but try this  ........
Many weird things happen as a result of corrupt preferences which can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that only  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.

  • Home folder mounted after logging out then logging back in

After I logged out of my account, I logged back in to see nothing on my desktop except for "Macintosh HD." I click on it and noticed that my home folder is mounted as a disk image under "Places." By "home folder" I meant the folder found at MacintoshHD\users\name-of-folder. I did not shutdown and login again, I logged out back to the main login screen, then logged in again under the same account. Shutting down the computer before logging in to the same account prevents this from happening, but logging out then logging back in causes it to happen. How do I fix this problem?

Sorry for the delay - perhaps bump sooner next time.
I use 10.5.8 and don't recall seeing this. A picture may help.
    My advice is:
Backup Home folder and perhaps whole disk to an external disk or DVD with eg Carbon Copy Cloner
    Install the free AppleJack
Reboot holding cmd s until you see text
    Wait until text stops
    Type: applejack AUTO shutdown
    Hit return key
Don't touch but prepare for a long wait - may take hours the first time
You can probably ignore the many error messages
    Reboot after it has shutdown
First boot will take longer than usual as it rebuilds caches
I find AppleJack far better than Apple's Disk Utility.

  • IMac 2007 freezes after sleep and then can't find hard drive after reboot.

I'm having a problem where my mid 2007 iMac (2.4 GHz core duo w/ 6 Gb of ram) freezes after sleep.  It seems to happen only when an application was open at the time of sleep.  The freeze manifests as the cursor turns into the spinning wheel, but the computer can't do anything.  Command-option escape doesn't work.  Most of the time after I reboot, the iMac can't find the hard drive.  If I leave the computer off for 15 minutes then it will reboot ok.  Is my hard drive going out or do I have another problem?  I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.5.  I've repaired permissions, verified the hard drive and reset the NVram but I still have the problem.

Here is the console right before the time of the crash.

  • Screen dimming after 20 seconds - not coming back to life

This morning, when I started my laptop, it was working fine. THen after about 20 seconds the screen went really dim - dimmer than you can make it go normally, and too dim to use, but you can still see somethign.
I put it too sleep, then brought it back again, and it came to life - but then did the same thing.
Can anybody tell me what is wrong?
    Thanks

You also may want to check TVT Power Manager; there are a few options in there that dim the display, some of which really dim the display quite a bit.

  • Mac freezes, shows grey screen then starts back up

For the past two weeks I have had the issue of my iMac suddenly freezing for a few seconds and then it turns to a grey screen for a few more seconds before it starts back up on my user area.
All programs get shut down (which is annoying as I do graphic design so I'm usually on PS or AI and lose work I've done since last save). Programs which are set to start up automatically upon login do not start up. Thankfully firefox will start back up when I click it and continue from all the tabs I had open.
I cannot seem to find a source for this to be happening... The programs which are always running when this has happened previously are: Mac Mail, finder, Messages, Spotify, Wacom Desktop Center. This morning it happened when none of my adobe programs were running.
Has anyone had the same issue or knows what's up?
I tried to go to apple support but it said I need to pay £35 for someone to answer my question.

  • Video freezes after 20 seconds, then video plays with no sound

I used ImToo to put DVDs onto iTunes and then onto my 60GB iPod (which I bought today). The video plays for about 20 seconds before freezing (both sound and audio). If I go back into the menu and then back into the movie, it picks up where it left off - but then sometimes the sound stops while the video keeps going.
The videos play perfectly on iTunes, but not on the iPod. Is my iPod faulty?

How are you trying to put the videos on?
Connect the iPod and go to edit-->preferences in iTunes. Hit the iPod tab, then the videos tab. Make sure update all videos is selected.
Note that your preferences may look slightly different.
Also, is iTunes itself up to date?
    iPod Updater
Finally, try unistalling the 2006-01-10 updater (before you update iTunes)
