FCP freezes - won't play clips or timeline

I tried importing files to a new event and setting up a new project. FCPX simply freezes. I cannot play a clip (audio or video). The computer is an iMac (IMAC 11,1 27" 2.8GHz Core i7,ATI Radeon 4850 512MB, 8GB Ram) The problem shows up with ALL projects/ALL events. All of which worked earlier. The latest files work fine on my MBP (also FCPX10.0.5/OSX 10.8.2). When I press play FCP CPU usage goes to 1-00% (out of 800% at full utilization) returns to zero when I stop playback.
One quirk is that I see a little bit of motion when I stop playback (press the = )
I tried wiping preferences, removing/reinstalling FCP, and am now at wits end. I erased ALL FCP data files before the reinstall and eliminated application data files etc. What am I missing that might have been corrupted? What else can I do to try to fix this situation?

Tom, thanks for getting back to me so quickly. The video clips are standard movie files made using a Canon SX260HS (1080p resolution) the audio files are .aif output from Garage band. I have used similar files before successfully and files (both events and projects) that used to work fine will not play either. When editing I create a myulticam clip with A and B roll video plus an audio track (exported from garage Band).
I suspect that the files are not the cause since I can use the most recent set on my MBP and everything works fine. But I, of course, have no proof.

Audio won't play off the timeline

I have been working with a 17min. project shot in HDV and edited w FCP 6. I have tried a few different ways to get it out to DVD Pro through Compressor. I also tried to convert it from HDV to DV so I could take it back out to tape as a DV project. I went back to the project and tried to do another compressed version for DVD after being unsuccesful converting it to DV. So when I went to Compress it to a DVD there was no audio on the DVD. I went back into the FCP project and found that the audio does not play off the timeline anymore. The audio waves are still on the timeline and when I double click on the timeline it plays in my viewer. i checked the audio outputs but the audio is not showing on the LEDs in the audio mixer. Did something get changed because of my trying to export it?

If none of the above suggestions work toggle on the Audio Controls speaker icon (see image below) and if the speakers icon appear yellow single click them (same action can be performed in the audio mixer.

Beeping sound while playing clip on timeline

Hello.
I try to edit the newly captured clip on timeline, but the beep sound requires me to render the clip first. It has never happened before. Want to know how to solve the problem.

Ying, please check your sequence settings and compare it to your previous settings that resulted in no render "beeping.".

FCP won't play mixed resolution timeline

Trying to play a ProRes 422 sequence with mixed resolutions (AIC, HDV, ProRes) and keep getting the Dropped Frames warning. I have closed all other sequences, turned off "unlimited RT", gotten down to two audio tracks. I am on Dynamic Video Quality and Dynamic Frame Rate. Any other suggestions?
I am really trying to stretch FCP to convince the Chief Engineer to upgrade our facility to FCP and FCE from an Avid shop.
Any input is much appreciated.

Yeah, that is the main issue, the conversion of HDV to ProRes on the fly. Another issue is the hard drive. ProRes 422 HD on a firewire 800 drive is pushing the limits. Adding mixed formats makes it worse. For the record, FW800 on an Avid mixing DNxHD and DVCPRO HD and DV...I didn't have an issue. But HDV is a whole new ballgame. Native HDV editing is taxing on processors.
If you want to do offline/online editing...have the editors work low res in the field and then come back and relink to the masters at full res...Avid is the way to go. Avid 3.5 is really rock solid and mixes formats well. And the software is cheaper than it ever was. Get one machine, or two, with Nitris DX boxes and the rest just software and that won't set you back much.
Figure out your workflow, then choose the tool that accomplishes that the best.

Clip won't play audio in timeline

I can play and skim my clips in the event browser fine and can hear the audio, but when i bring it down in to the timeline the audio does not play only the clip, and yes in the toolbar the for the pop up menu for the append buttons all is selected, so both audio and video appear in the timeline...
Cold someone assist please?

The same thing is happening to me, just as Allan first described:
I can play and skim my clips in the event browser fine and can hear the audio, but when I bring it down into the timeline, the audio doesn't play, nor does a WAV form appear in the timeline. Once in the timeline, the clip only shows/plays the video without sound.
This is an entirely new problem for me ... Any help?

Premiere Pro CC14 won't play video in timeline...

I upgraded to Premiere Pro CC14 when it came out. I've since started a new project that is a mix of stills and video with various FX. Before, everything played fine. Now, I open the project and can scrub through the timeline, but I hit play and nothing happens. The "play" button in the program window switches from the "play" symbol to the "stop" symbol, but nothing happens. The program doesn't freeze, but it just sits there, not doing anything. Even opening the source footage to play back in the source monitor, nothing happens. Otherwise, you can open things and they show up, but nothing plays.
Even starting a new project from scratch, importing one piece of video, and trying to play it gets the same result.
Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a solution?
I'm working on a MacBookPro Retina, with 16GB of RAM on Mavericks.

Premeire CC 2014 not playing clips or timeline with New Mac Pro Late 2013 D700

I have used premeire cs5 and cs6 and never had this issue
I just bought a new mac pro and installed the trial of Premeire cc 2014
I import clips like normal, set my sequence and the play button does not work
in the viewer or in the timeline. Can seem to make anything work
also I am on 10.9.5 which from what I can see should be fine.

Ipod skips songs and / or freezes, won't play any song

Listening to my ipod I skipped to next track, but no sound came. Looking at display I noticed that the ipod had skipped about twenty tracks. Tried going back to track I wanted to play but ipod wouldn't play it - time display stuck at 0.00 for a few mins then skipped to next track, same problem. Went to completely different track - same problem.
Checked on itunes - all songs played fine, both those listed under my home hard drive, and those listed under the ipod's drive on itunes.
Resynched ipod - same problem - initially one or two songs would play, but when trying to play the specific track I first tried, it would skip through the next twenty or so tracks then stop playing anything.
Tried soft reset - same problem.
Tried restoring to factory settings - same problem.
Took to apple store genius bar - they made no attempt to work out what was going wrong, just replaced ipod as it was still under warranty. Got home and resynched all songs - same problem!
This suggests it is a problem with the song files, but I don't understand why they play fine on itunes. Also, the file type (mp3), bit rate, sample rate, file size, etc is exactly the same in both locations.
Have tried all troubleshooting tips on this site, and all software is latest version.
Any ideas?

Well, it may have lots of reasons: changing files from original folders, uninstall/install codecs in other programs, errors on iTunes Sync service, deleted .dll's, viruses and etc...
To easier the work for you, you can do it in all your iTunes library or make a backup of your files and reinstall iTunes (enjoy to update it, if you haven't yet).
Try "consolidate files" also, it can avoid that iTunes search from the files in wrong places, and automatically organize your .mp3/.aac files.
In a last tool, try to change the iTunes import preferences.

YouTube in N95 Videocenter won't play clips

I've been having this problem for some time now. There are YouTube videos for N95 in the Videocenter but for some reason real can't play them, they just stuck on the loading screen. I'm using WLAN for Videocenter and Real.

My mac won't play clips off of an SD card

I have an insignia mini camcorder that records video. I inserted the sd card into my mac but it says quicktime player can't open this movie. Can anyone help with this problem? Thank you

Just use software that's able to read the files. Try VLC.

FCP 5.1.4 no longer playing clips it used to play w/o rendering first

G5 2.7 Dual GHz PPC, 4.5 GB SDRAM, OSX 10.4.11
I haven’t used FCP 5.1.4 for quite a while. I digitized some home movie footage from miniDV directly into FCP 5.1.4. It plays back fine in the preview window. It plays fine if I open it up and play it from Quicktime v 7.6.4 (518.35). But when I put the FCP digitized clip in the timeline I get the red line indicating that it has to be rendered before I can see it play back in the canvas window. I tried to digitize new footage thru firewire directly into FCP with the same result – plays fine in the preview window and in QT. But it won’t play in the timeline / canvas window until I render it first. And the render file is twice the size of the original footage I digitized directly into FCP.
Also, playback is getting stuck on footage that used to play fine. The audio keeps playing alright, but the video gets stuck, then catches up and plays a bit, then gets stuck again, sometimes never coming back. If I export the file as a QT movie, the QT movie plays with the video getting stuck – I don’t know if it’s in the same places. But it makes exporting a waste of time as an option to “work around” the problem.
Did something change in FCP in the last year that I am not aware of? Like, maybe, FCP now upconverts / up-renders DV footage as HD footage as a default, or something like that? I used to just digitize 4:3 standard def footage into FCP, then drag it down into the time line, hit the space bar, and FCP would just play the files. Trim, delete sections, normal edits, and FCP would always play w/o rendering.
I don’t want to upconvert any of my standard def 4:3 home movies. I just want to digitize the footage thru / via DV, make some straight cuts, adjust low volume, put in some chapter markers, and send the edited home movies to Compressor so I can make DVD’s out of my home movies. I’m not even putting in transitions and FCP says I have to render the entire file from beginning to end!
I did add an iPhone to the scenario since I last used FCP. I noticed that the syncing that seems to go on constantly as a result of / related to the iPhone seems to reek havoc with FCP. So I shut auto-sync off. Now I have double everything in my iPhone again. But I’ll do whatever I have to in order to be able to use FCP to make DVD’s of all my old home movies.
I stopped using this USB 2.0 drive. The last time I tried to digitize something it was on an internal hard drive – separate from my boot drive, and not a partition of my boot drive, a separate internal hard drive, which should be even faster than the firewire 400 hard drives I used to use.
Please tell me if there is something I have to unselect to make FCP 5.1.4 just stay in Standard Def 4:3 so I can just edit my home movies without having to use 166% more hard drive space and wait for rendering on most everything I do.
If my session is corrupt and I have to start all over in a new session, please let me know whether there is a way to export the chapter markers that I’ve already painstakingly inserted on the home movies I’ve already struggled through, so I don’t have to re-figure, re-locate, re-name, and recreate them again. Even a printout of the chapter marker location times and the names of the chapters in simple text format would be better than having to recreate each and every one of them from scratch all over again.

As far as I can tell, they are not different, except for:
Aud Rate: 48001.8Hz on the older clip
Aud Rate: 48001.9Hz on the new clip
I cannot explain why the sample rates are not 48000 exactly. I didn't try to digitize them at the rates they digitized. The first, older clip came off of a miniDV tape via firewire from a JVC SR-VS30 miniDV / S-VHS deck. The second, new clip was digitized from the original BetaMax recording, in real time, through the same JVC SR-VS30 miniDV / S-VHS deck configuration, FCP set to DVDVCPRO50, the standard setting for DV that was the preset, that I have always used, using the miniDV deck as a "non-controllable device" source, recording into FCP in real time "Capture Now". Below are the Item Properties and the Sequence Settings:

Audio won't play after audio render

I have an MP3 on audio track 1 in Premiere/CS4, placed underneath video clips which I've unlinked from the audio and deleted/cleared those unlinked audio files. The MP3 file plays fine until I render the timeline and then it stops playing. If I 'double click' the file (placing it back in the source window) it plays fine there, but won't play in the timeline. I've included the file properties below. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and what I can do to fix the problem?

I could do a MP3 to WAV conversion, but that defeats the
purpose of storing my (growing) music library in MP3 for space conservation.
I understand the space problem. Only do this for files that you are using as Assets, Imported into PrPro, if they give you a problem.
Seems I'm finding I have to do a lot of 'work arounds' with CS4.
Well, it does seem that you are not alone on this one. However, my problem came with PrPro 2.0. In my case, it only happened once, but did affect about a dozen Audio files in several Sequences. Did not realize the magnitude of my issue, and only observed it after a busy day of trying to Keyframe some Effects and doing multiple Renders to check things out. One moment all Audio in that section was playing well - next moment (after one more Render) dead. Others, who replied to my thread indicated that it had happened to them too, in similar circumstances. Trouble was, none of us could duplicate it and some had this happen on their first Render, while I'd probably done a dozen that morning. Have never had it happen again, and finished that Project with hundreds more Renders, just like I'd done, with not one problem. I certainly can not call it a Bug, as there was no way for anyone to reproduce it. Still, whatever allows it to happen, under the right (or wrong) circumstances seems to be around two generations later. Hey, phases of the Moon?

Video won't Play

For some reason my footage in FCP 6 won't play properly. I am using the new 24inch imac. I am editing a full feature film. I made a first cut of the film in one sequence that came out to about an hour long, and named it First Cut. I played the one hour sequence and had no problems with it. It didn't even seem to be dropping any frames. Last Sunday I captured some additional footage in a bin that I named October 4th. The new footage was running fine from the bin. I even made two new short sequences from that footage and kept it stored in the October 4th Bin later intending to cut it into the Master First Cut sequence (haven't done that yet though). Then yesterday when I opened up final cut pro, I noticed that all of the footage in the October 4th bin was reported as media offline. This was very strange cause I never moved any of the files around, and I searched my entire hard drive and it was nonexistant (not a big problem cause I could recapture it). I opened up some older bins to check that the rest of my footage was still intact and running, which it was. I then opened up the First Cut Sequence, hit play, and noticed that even though the scroll bar was rolling, there was no audio or video. I then went to check other older footage and noticed that no files at all from any project would play in the viewer or canvas. Scroll bar would move, but no sound or video. So I closed all projects and restarted final cut, and all of the old footage was running perfectly again. But then when I opened up the First cut sequence and hit play, I noticed that this file was playing without video or audio again, and this time it was also reporting that it was dropping frames. I then went to open up other projects to check on them, and again every other project in final cut wouldn't display video or audio even though the scroll bar was rolling. Basically every time I close all of the projects and restart final cut, everything works fine. But as soon as I open up First Cut and try to play it, every file in all bins or projects stops working properly. This problem started the same time that I found that the October 4th files went offline and disapeared nowhere to be found. I tried trashing the preferences, but it didn't solve the problem. I am wondering if I should reinstall final cut. But if the problem is some corrupted file either from the offline October 4th files or the First Cut sequence, then I am worried that the problem might arise again after the installation. Or is it possible that the First Cut sequence was so big that every time I open it is is confusing the entire program (even though this sequence had no problems in the past and those October 4th went offline for no logical reason).
Sorry for the awfully long message. If anyone has got any ideas or has had a similar experience I would really appreciate the feedback.

Clips suddenly won't play in iMovie

I have several projects I'm working on in iMovie. All of a sudden some of the clips that I'm using to create my projects won't play in iMovie any longer. When the project gets to the portion of the video where that clip is, the video freezes until the next "good" clip comes up in the timeline. All the while the music still plays over the frozen video. Also, the clips are taken from longer video clips that still play in iMovie. For example, in one case a video clip is 11 seconds long and I'm only taking the first 4 seconds. It is these 4 seconds that won't play. The rest of the clip plays fine if I bring it into the project but the first 4 seconds that I originally had in my project won't play no matter what I do. Thus I know it is not the format of the clips. Also, the clips still play fine in QuickTime, just not in iMovie.
I've tried suggestions such as deleting the iMovie preferences file (plist file), taking the movies out of the Movie folder, restarting iMovie, closing iMovie, moving my projects back to the Movies folder, and re-opening the projects to no avail.
