FCP hangs because of Hard Drvie

Hi,
This is a drive problem primarily I think, and it hangs FCP.
If I leave my iMac 2.8Ghz Intel Core i7 with 8GB RAM running OS 10.6.5 for an hour or so, the Rocstor Eagleroc 1.5TB (in FIrewire 800 mode) hangs and cannot be accessed, even though I have Energy Saver's 'put the hard disks to sleep' unticked.
I have the computer sleep after an hour, but all my other drives can be accessed when i return. This hangs my Final Cut Pro and is extremely annoying. What to do please?
The drive is chained (via a Firewire 800 to 400 cable) to a DVD burner which is chained to another firewire drive, which is off at the moment.
I have installed Disksomina from Digital Heaven (http://www.digital-heaven.co.uk/disksomnia), that hasn't changed things for the better with this particular drive.

Thanks Patrick, I'll investigate the fan issue, and also whether the drive hangs when used with other applications (it's the Capture Scratch for my FCP). In any case, I wrote to Rocstor, and they suggested disconnecting other drives chained to it, which I did, but nothing's changed - if I leave the computer overnight, in the morning I find FCP not responding, and when I try to open folders on the drive via the finder, it shows as if they're empty, and then the Finder crashes, even force-quitting doesn't recover it, and then I simply have to re-start the OS, which is very annoying.

  • Your firmware can not be updated because the hard drive...SMC 1.3

    Hi all !
    I have a problem. I'm have a macbook pro Santa Rosa =
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP41.00C1.B03
    SMC Version (system): 1.27f1
This morning I saw the update for the SMC firmware (1.3).
Before restarting, I have this error :
    http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/6606/26048579.jpg
Your firmware can not be updated because the hard drive partition scheme may not be supported. You must be booted from a GUID partiton or RAID scheme.
When I went into Disk Utility in order to check, here is what I have =
    Name : FUJITSU MHY2200BH Media
    Type : Disk
Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table
    Disk Identifier : disk0
Media Name : FUJITSU MHY2200BH Media
    Media Type : Generic
Connection Bus : Serial ATA 2
    Device Tree : /PCI0/SATA@1F,2/PRT0@0/PMP@0/@0:0
    Writable : Yes
    Ejectable : No
Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed : No
    Location : Internal
    Total Capacity : 186.3 GB (200,049,647,616 Bytes)
    S.M.A.R.T. Status : Verified
    Disk Number : 0
    Partition Number : 0
I thought Boot Camp could be involved becauseI know it's the only thing related to the EFI.
I searched on internet, and Ifound nothing. There was a solution in order to reset the partition table, but the tool is no longer available. The link on on the application explains that I have to reformat my macbook pro. I find a bit weird to make this , I can't spend hours for backup / restore just because the SMC update does not work. have you any lead for me ?
    Thanks ,
    Razique

    Have you tried this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • HT201250 I want to use Time Machine to back up my pictures because my hard drive is full but I'm wondering if once I back up the pictures then delete them will time machine delete them off the back up too?

I want to use Time Machine to back up my pictures because my hard drive is full but I'm wondering if once I back up the pictures then delete them will time machine delete them off the back up too?

    Evetually yes.
If your pictures have been in the same location (same folder, same subfolder, ...) for more than a week, then copies if them will remain in your TM backups until it fills up. They are then vulnerable to being deleted.
If they've been there for less than a week, TM could delete them as early as a month from now. If they've been there for only a few hours, chances are TM will delete them tomorrow.
This is why TM is not the best tool to use to archive data that you will be deleting from your main hard drive. Copy them to a dedicated external drive, or burn DVDs.

  • N8 hang / boot failure / hard reset / missing stan...

Recap: Phone hanged (won't boot) and I had to do a hard reset (volume down, camera, menu, power). After that some standard apps (Nokia Store, Social and QuickOffice wouldn't install). - Solution: Just reinstall Belle from Nokia Suite, then the standard apps is installed for you. I don't now why noone that had problems after a hard reset has found this one earlier. So easy! - Details: For less hassle when the phone hangs and a hard reset is needed the best order seems to be: 1) hard reset (hold volume down, camera, meny and then press power). 2) Reinstall Belle from Nokia Suite. 3) Reinstall apps that are missing (on c: drive, apps on e: seems to survive the process for some reason).
    Lars-Erik Østerud - http://www.osterud.name/nokia.html

That worked before belle refreshed version for n8. Now i lost everything and i knew this trick a looooong time ago. BUT... After 3 times trying to: delete and restore, reinstall firmware, delete and restore. Nothing happend(. Nokia should provide this default apps as signed sis in nokia store. Alot of people are having this problems. Now i'm stuck at missing photo/ video editor

  • FCP Hangs for no discernible reason

FCP 7.0.2 has been hanging a lot lately - crashing several times a day. I'm working on a ProRes HD timeline, and sometimes when I try to play the timeline, I get the beachball. Ultimately, I have to force quit, but although the FCP process is not in top or in the Activity Monitor, the OS seems to think it's still active. The icon is still in the dock with the white dot and if I alt-tab, it's there, too. If I quit the app, and let the computer sleep, FCP hangs when starting back up.
I have a Blackmagic Decklink SDI card that I thought might be the culprit, but I stopped sending the video signal through it - still the same problem. I tried trashing my prefs and the cache - no dice. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Probably no help but I recently had the beachball show up for the first time in manyyears. Turned out I was trying to use MP3 and WAV music files in my timeline. Exported them as AIFF and things smoothed right out. Disconcerting with the new hardware and OS, I figured I 'd be gaining, not losing functionality and speed.

  • I cannot use FCP X because as soon as I launch it it stops responding. I can see the interface and a continuous beach ball.

I cannot use FCP X because as soon as I launch it it stops responding. I can see the interface and a continuous beach ball. Its been more than 3 months now since I have been using FCP X and it has never done this before. The problem is that I have some projects to finish and I do not know what to do. How can I solve this problem?

As mishmumken said, you can try deleting your preference files . . .
If that fails, you probably have corrupt or incompatible media somewhere. Use finder to create new (temporary) folders and move your projects and events there before launching the application so that the events and projects are not found.
If FCP X loads OK, bring back the events one by one, relaunching FCP X each time, to try to isolate the offending material.

  • My mac pro does not start up because then hard disk is formatted

My mac pro does not start up because then hard disk is formatted, How can install the operating system.
    regards,
    Tassew

Did you erase the hard drive yourself? If not, what exactly are you seeing, and what happened immediately prior to you starting to see it?
Your profile indicates that you are/were running Lion (Mac OS X 10.7.4) on a retina MacBook Pro, so you should be able to hold down command-R at startup to enter recovery mode, and you can reinstall the system from there. But whether or not you need to do something else first depends on your answers to the questions above.

  • FCP 'hangs' during app start-up

    Hey all,
I had a similar post earlier this week but now the SBBOD is happening during Final Cut's boot up. To be exact, it hangs right after it doesn't 'see' my DVCAM deck. Although I've tried starting FCP with and without the deck on...it still just sits...with the spinning beach ball.
    Anyone have/had this issue?
Restarting the computer seems to fix it but there's obviously a problem somewhere.
And here are my system's stats: OSX 10.5.6, FCP 6.0.5, & QT 7.5.5
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Trashed preferences?
    Yes
    Run Disk Utility?
    Yes*
    Any recent software updates?
    Nope
Tried creating a new user account and opeing FCP from there?
    Not yet...but don't think that'll help...but will try that.
Checked the problem projects for CMYK graphics or file/graphic/render corruption?
I was one of the original responders that figured out the CMYK issues when they first arose
Have you recently done a major OS upgrade? If so, did you do a clean archive/wipe/install?...or did you use Migration Assistant? I don't believe clean system os installs are ever the answer...especially when issues come up out of the blue.
    No
*I think it's still a hard drive issue (using an external FW drive) even though disk utility says everything's fine.

  • HELP!!!  Reinstalling apps -- install hangs on 2nd hard drive

This is so bizarre. We had a major issue here with the production G5, so the suggestion was made to reinstall all the software, from the OS (10.3) to the production aps. (That's not quite the bizarre part, yet.)
We have 2 hard disks on this computer -- "Agatha" contains the production software, and "Zelda" contains all the customer files.
Agatha is the disk we wiped clean. Reinstalling the OS as well as Creative Suite went fine. But when we tried to install the 6.1 and 6.5 updates to Quark 6 (as well as the updates to Microsoft word and the whole program of Suitcase X) the installer program got hung up on "gathering information" and just spun the little ball for hours. In Suitcase, I notice that it hangs up while searching the Zelda drive -- none of this software has ever been installed on Zelda, so I don't know what it's looking for or finding there.
After about an hour on the phone with Quark Tech Support, they couldn't figure it out, and instead had me download an already-updated copy from their server. That still doesn't help us with Suitcase or the Microsoft apps, though.
Since the installer program SEEMS to be hanging up when it checks the Zelda drive (the one with the customer files), I'm wondering if there just isn't some way to make the system NOT SEE this drive???
Quark had us do all the usual tries: fixing permissions, logging in as root user, renaming folders.
I'm completely at a loss as to what's happening here and why we can't reinstall software that we had NO problem installing when we first bought it. I'm also worried that since it seems the installer or updater programs are the problem, that even if we upgrade to OS x.4 and Quark 7 (which I'm planning to do soon) that we won't be ABLE to update, since the updater program hangs.
    Suggestions, PLEASE !

Hi, Amanda. I have no experience installing the programs you mention, and I may be well off the mark here. So if what I'm about to say seems off base, that's entirely possible — don't lose any sleep if you can't make it add up.
The application installers you're trying to run may be programmed to install items in the Application Support folder of the user account to which you've logged in before running the installers. If your Users folder isn't on the startup drive you're booted to, that's likely to cause problems. Are you booting to Agatha, and have you moved your Users folder to Zelda? I ask this because you say "'Zelda' contains all the customer files," and I'm not sure precisely what you mean by "customer files".
If "customer files" means only data files that you've created in your various applications, which would ordinarily be filed by default inside the Documents folder of the user account you normally log into, but which can just as well be stored elsewhere at your option, then that should pose no problem at all for the installers. But if "customer files" implies that you have different user accounts for different customers, and those account folders don't reside on the startup drive, then I suspect that's the cause of your trouble.

  • FCP Hangs On Choose Setup

I've just installed a Decklink Multibrige and now when I start up FCP the system hangs on the Choose Setup screen...
The weird part is that the FCP splash Screen stays on and the Choose Setup is grey-ed out behind it...
I can move the Choose Setup screen but can't select anything... just get the ominous "Donk" sound....
It's crazy.. the splash screen with my serial stays on... I guess it is stopping me from choosing a setup...
I've updated the firmware on the Multi Bridge and FCP is all updated...
    I'm running FCP 7.0.2
Anybody else come across this before...
    Cheers

  • IF I install FCP on another internal hard drive but boot off the other drive?

    Hi
There is something I don't understand
When you have 2 hard drives and one has the OS and you decide to clone that onto a second internal hard drive, what happens to the applications in that second drive?  Do you have to reboot and re-start from that second hard drives "startup disk" to use those applications
The reason being is this.  Right now I have the OS in one drive but I'd like to install a second hard drive, clone the OS but also intsall Final Cut Pro on that second drive, so everything that I do as far as editing is contained within that second drive
What I'm getting at is, can I still use Final Cut Pro Application in that second drive even though I started up the computer up from the first drives startup disk?
Or would it be better to buy a large drive, like a 2TB and just partition the Final Cut Pro within that drive?
    Thank you!

    Hi Jim
But wouldn't that be the case if you have an OS in each drive (FCP in the second drive)
Although that second drive would not be "running" per se, wouldn't FCP still work as a stand alone in that drive? Or no?
    I'm talking about FCP 7
    Thank you
