FCP Hangs On Choose Setup

I've just installed a Decklink Multibrige and now when I start up FCP the system hangs on the Choose Setup screen...
The weird part is that the FCP splash Screen stays on and the Choose Setup is grey-ed out behind it...
I can move the Choose Setup screen but can't select anything... just get the ominous "Donk" sound....
It's crazy.. the splash screen with my serial stays on... I guess it is stopping me from choosing a setup...
I've updated the firmware on the Multi Bridge and FCP is all updated...
I'm running FCP 7.0.2
Anybody else come across this before...
Cheers

  • Fcp 7 hangs on choose setup

I'm using FCP 7.0.3 on a 2011 MacBook Pro 15" i7 with 8Gb ram. Suddenly when I startup FCP the startup proces hangs on the "choose setup" screen. I cannot choose anything (just get a 'ploink' sound when I try to do so) and have to quit using Force Quit. I repaired permissions, threw away the FCP preferences... doesn't help. The strange thing is that this problem suddenly appeared and I didn't change anything recently (no new plugins or other programs). What's happening here?

  • CS5 hangs when choosing submenu tools?

I have a brand new i7 MBP 17", running brand new CS5 Photoshop, and I'm having issues where the application will hang (for a few seconds, 4-8 seconds probably) when I do particular simple tasks...
An example is if I just open a brand new document, and click>hold on say, the Dodge tool, (to select the Burn tool), as soon as I move my mouse cursor over the Burn tool, and click it (to select from the submenu popup thing) PS then hangs for a good 3-5 seconds. It doesn't do a spinning wheel or anything, and the mouse moves fine, just PS itself is frozen for a few seconds, then it unfreezes and I have to select the tool again, but then it selects just fine.
This will also occur every once in a while with layer selection, but it happens on every single '2nd level' tool in the main toolbar menu on the left side. It's extremely annoying!
I've uninstalled PS CS 5, reinstalled... I even downloaded the trial from adobe, installed that just to make sure it wasn't something quirky with my installer... same issue exactliy the same every time.
I have installed the 12.0.1 update, and that doesn't seem to do anything, FYI.
Is this just me? Or does anyone have any suggestions? There's plenty of RAM allocated to PS, and it's an i7 2.66Ghz brand new MBP with 4GB of memory... so I'm certain it isn't a computer limitation!
    Thanks in advance,
    Nick

Wahooo!  I think I found the problem with the hang on choosing submenus.  Thanks Chris and Jeffrey for you rapid responses on this issue.
The source of the slow down is a great little utility of OS X called "RightZoom" by blazingtools.   It's a cool app that lets intercepts clicks in application and folder windows on the expand button and opens the window corner to corner of the screen.  It works well but sometimes does not play nice with application interfaces.  I actually need a better brain cause I had an issue related with Illustrator CS4 and selecting with the direct selection tool.
There are two options to correct the delay:
    1.  Disable Right Zoom.  - you can kill the task using activity monitor, then go to your System Prefs > Accounts > Log in items and remove RightZoom from the list.
    2. You can add Photoshop to the RightZoom application exceptions list.  Kill RightZoom, find the RightZoom app in your applications folder and hold the Command key down, then double click to launch which will open the configuration window.  To add an application to the list of exceptions, it has to be running.  So Launch Photoshop if it is not running and then you will see it as an option to Except.
I am likely just behind the times on the second issue mentioned, which is that the keystroke shortcuts listed in submenus don't have qualifier keys.  Like "shift" + B to toggle through the brush options, for example.
    Thanks, James.

  • FCP Hangs for no discernible reason

FCP 7.0.2 has been hanging a lot lately - crashing several times a day. I'm working on a ProRes HD timeline, and sometimes when I try to play the timeline, I get the beachball. Ultimately, I have to force quit, but although the FCP process is not in top or in the Activity Monitor, the OS seems to think it's still active. The icon is still in the dock with the white dot and if I alt-tab, it's there, too. If I quit the app, and let the computer sleep, FCP hangs when starting back up.
I have a Blackmagic Decklink SDI card that I thought might be the culprit, but I stopped sending the video signal through it - still the same problem. I tried trashing my prefs and the cache - no dice. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Probably no help but I recently had the beachball show up for the first time in manyyears. Turned out I was trying to use MP3 and WAV music files in my timeline. Exported them as AIFF and things smoothed right out. Disconcerting with the new hardware and OS, I figured I 'd be gaining, not losing functionality and speed.

  • Configuration hanging at initial setup

    Hi,
I'm trying to setup a Mac OS Leopoard Server and when enter all the inital information during the initial setup, a dialog box shows the status. Around I'd say 98% (yeah it's right at the near end, just a sliver left) the thing hangs. About 30 or so minutes it gives up and I forget the error message and goes back to restart the app (not the system.)
Tried zapping the PRAM, doing some console (single user) trick I found elsewhere to no avail. I do not have the disc to the OS, and I installed Tiger on another hard drive to see if I can peek into the Leopoard of any abnormalities.
    Thoughts?

Make a note of the error message next time as that will help. In the meantime make sure the server is connected to a network ie: an ethernet cable to an active switch or router. In initial configuration of Leopard Server will fail if you don't do this as an active network connection is one of its requirements.
If this is the only server on your network make sure you have a clear idea about what your internal DNS Services are going to be and choose either Standard or Advanced. If this server is to be placed in an existing network (eg: a Windows Domain) which already has a mature DNS server configured and running then choose Workgroup instead after making sure relevant DNS records have been created for it and a fixed IP address has been reserved for its use.

  • New iChat hangs during initial setup, then crashes

I got the latest version of iChat (I can't find out the exact version because it's not included in the info). It asks me if I want to use jabber, and all that stuff, and I choose "no." Then it just hangs with the spinning beachball of death. I do a force-quit, delete the preference files, and start over. Then it gets through the initial setup process, and says "click OK to start using iChat AV." I click OK, and then it CRASHES! What's going on here?!?

    Hi James,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You might want to try reinstalling the 10.4.2 Combo Updater before you go to all that work, especially if you updated to 10.4.2 with one click in Apple's Software Update on your Mac.
See How I Update My Mac OS X for more info.
Readers who do need to reinstall might find some useful suggestions at Reinstalling Mac OS X (Rarely Necessary).

  • FCP hangs because of Hard Drvie

    Hi,
This is a drive problem primarily I think, and it hangs FCP.
If I leave my iMac 2.8Ghz Intel Core i7 with 8GB RAM running OS 10.6.5 for an hour or so, the Rocstor Eagleroc 1.5TB (in FIrewire 800 mode) hangs and cannot be accessed, even though I have Energy Saver's 'put the hard disks to sleep' unticked.
I have the computer sleep after an hour, but all my other drives can be accessed when i return. This hangs my Final Cut Pro and is extremely annoying. What to do please?
The drive is chained (via a Firewire 800 to 400 cable) to a DVD burner which is chained to another firewire drive, which is off at the moment.
I have installed Disksomina from Digital Heaven (http://www.digital-heaven.co.uk/disksomnia), that hasn't changed things for the better with this particular drive.

Thanks Patrick, I'll investigate the fan issue, and also whether the drive hangs when used with other applications (it's the Capture Scratch for my FCP). In any case, I wrote to Rocstor, and they suggested disconnecting other drives chained to it, which I did, but nothing's changed - if I leave the computer overnight, in the morning I find FCP not responding, and when I try to open folders on the drive via the finder, it shows as if they're empty, and then the Finder crashes, even force-quitting doesn't recover it, and then I simply have to re-start the OS, which is very annoying.

  • FCP 'hangs' during app start-up

    Hey all,
I had a similar post earlier this week but now the SBBOD is happening during Final Cut's boot up. To be exact, it hangs right after it doesn't 'see' my DVCAM deck. Although I've tried starting FCP with and without the deck on...it still just sits...with the spinning beach ball.
    Anyone have/had this issue?
Restarting the computer seems to fix it but there's obviously a problem somewhere.
And here are my system's stats: OSX 10.5.6, FCP 6.0.5, & QT 7.5.5
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Trashed preferences?
    Yes
    Run Disk Utility?
    Yes*
    Any recent software updates?
    Nope
Tried creating a new user account and opeing FCP from there?
    Not yet...but don't think that'll help...but will try that.
Checked the problem projects for CMYK graphics or file/graphic/render corruption?
I was one of the original responders that figured out the CMYK issues when they first arose
Have you recently done a major OS upgrade? If so, did you do a clean archive/wipe/install?...or did you use Migration Assistant? I don't believe clean system os installs are ever the answer...especially when issues come up out of the blue.
    No
*I think it's still a hard drive issue (using an external FW drive) even though disk utility says everything's fine.

  • FCP hangs (temporarily) without using any CPU

Sometimes my FCP decides to take a coffee break or something: it just hangs, sometimes for many minutes at a time. Almost invariably it unhangs eventually if I just let it sit for long enough. Sometimes it does this while "preparing video for display" and sometimes it just goes out to lunch for no apparent reason and I get the SBOD. In either case, the strange thing is that CPU usage (as measured by TOP via a terminal window) shows that FCP is using almost no CPU while this is happening. The entire machine is almost completely idle.
Anyone have any idea what could be going on?
    Thanks.

Its probably just while we're hacking in and messing with your stuff Ron

  • FCP hang

    Hi all,
    I'm currently running FCP 6.03 on an iMac 24' 3.06 running OS10.5.3.
While digitising at pal 48 from a Sony DSR-40p through firewire to a WD fw800 raid drive I'm getting frequent freezes after about 10 or 12 minutes of digitising. It is fairly erratic will sometimes get through whole tape and then crash on the last clip in batch capture. My mac is only a few weeks old and this is my first project, any advice out there about what to check? What is the maximum length of clip that FCP can handle. Is it better to capture onto internal drive and then xfer to WD drive? Would appreciate any advice.
    Thanks in advance.

oy. do you have an IT help. I used to teach Avid editing at SVA here in NY and they basically had someone fulltime to manage the avid lab. It is a fulltime job.
And it's next to impossible to control what your students are doing. Are they allowed to bring in media? Nonstandard or wonky media can cause problems.
One thing I might suggest is that you create alternate startup disks for use when working with fcp. Keep this startup drive as clean as possible and see if that effects the hangs.

  • FCP hangs on launch and then won't force quit

I am having trouble launching FCP.
it will hang about at the point that it is llooking for the deck. I try to force quit and it hangs up there too.
I did manage to get it to come up once but I noticed in thhe capture settings that the Apple Firewire setting was (missing). I have also been getting the "You must restart hold down the power button" message alot lately.

    Here is my suggestion
    1. Update Mac Pro EFI Firmware. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbookproefifirmwareupdate12.html
    2. Reset PRAM via the following process:
Shut down your Mac Pro , then start it back up while immediately holding the following keys: Command, Option, P and R.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time.
    3. Erase FCP preferences files. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93832
    4. unplug all GRAID. Basically FireWire VTR and Storage need separate bus, so you needs a PCIe FW card.
Usually you can hook up both FW storage and VTR on the same FireWire bus; it is not stable, but at least you can captuer or control the deck.
    5. update CalDigit's FASTA-4e driver to 2.0.3 http://www.caldigit.com/support.asp
    6. are you using apple original memory?
We are using Apple original RAM 8Gigs, CalDigit FASTA-4e card, CalDigit S2VR Duo 1.5TB, FCP 5.1.2, OS 10.4.8, been running a while, no problem at all.
If you still have this problem, you can try to disconnect all external devices and memory one by one to point which component causing that issue.

  • Mail hangs on account setup

I am a bit of a novice on the Mac, but I am trying!
When I launch the mail app and try to add an account the application hangs and all I can do is Force a Quit.
Can I check the mail app setup or reinstall it?
    Any help much appreciated
    thanks

Not sure what you mean. Are you trying to set up Mail for the first time or do you already have other mail accounts working and are trying to set up a new one? What does “the application hangs” mean? What are you observing exactly?

  • MBP 10.5.8 hanging when run setup as if a new machine

    MBP 10.5.8
For a number of weeks my MacBook has been hanging and needing a hard restart and at other times taking longer and longer to boot up.
Finally it gave me a password prompt but not for my usual account and it wouldn't accept my password.
So in command line I went to ls /Users/ got the username of my account and tried to change the password in command line using:
       Launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectory.plist
       Passwd <username>
And the system said the username was not recognised even though what I typed was the one that showed when I ran ls /Users/
I did this several times with the same thing happening each time
Then I tried to create a new admin account by deleting var/db AppleSetUpDone
when I reboot it runs the setup program as if it were a new mac - I tried setting it up with the details of my wireless connection; it ran overnight without finishing
I then tried setting it up saying I do not connect to the Internet - same thing, it ran overnight without finishing
When I run fsck -fy in command line it says everything is fine
I know this machine is old and on its last legs and I would really appreciate any help getting it going for a little bit longer.
    Thanks very much

We have a mbp bootable clone with 10.5.8 and want to use this as a backup startup disk on a mba with 10.6.8.  We understand that it is generally not possible to startup a bootable clone that has a different os than what you are currently running.
You should as long as the MP had booted off the 10.5.8 clone previously.
However I, and others also, found out that we can no longer boot off the 10.5 disks in a later 10.6+ Software Update, it might be the firmware was changed to disallow 10.5 from booting once on 10.6.+ sometime.
Apple might have done this because they don't want people using the 10.5 disk to repair their 10.6 altered drive.
Got the written kp hard boot screen and had to unplug the clone while frozen but there appears to be no permanent damage to any of the drives.  We suspected this may happen.
There is your answer and no, no pernament damage was done, it's all a read operation and the machine/firmware couldn't use the 10.5.8 drivers.
You'll have to find a Mac that is of the same model and runs 10.5 to boot off that 10.5.8 clone.

  • FCP hangs then won't fully quit

I've been having some buggy issues with my FCP recently. Sometimes it hangs and when i try to force quit, the windows will close, but the little light underneath the icon in the dock stays lit as if it's still running. I cannot restart FCp with out restarting my computer, but when this happens it lags the restart so that i have to do a power kill restart.
any suggestions, is there a process in Activity Monitor that i should be looking at?
    thanks
