FCP / Intensity Pro

I'm capturing some material with BlackMagic Intensity Pro in FCP on my MacPro.
The capture process seems to go fine, but as soon as I start working with the clip, I immediately notice that the sound is completely out of synch with the video.
Video was captured from a cable box, using component video connection and simple L/R audio.
I have a feeling I didn't make the correct selection for capture/input device and/or didn't set the sequence prest properly. I'm not sure what setting to use. (audio/video was captured at different rates?) Any ideas? Also, would there be a way to re-synch the audio/video in the clip I have without have to perform another capture?
I've been hunting online for some kind of guide to "which capture input setting to use for which kind of source material" when using the intensity Pro, but so far have been unsuccessful.
Thanks!

If there is a control panel for the BM Intensity see if you can adjust the audio there to sync up.
Why not try using HDMI as the Audio and video and embedded digitally together.
Good Luck

  • FCP capture problem with Blackmagic Intensity Pro

I just installed a Blackmagic Intensity Pro and I am having problems capturing in Final Cut Pro 6. I have a Sony VCR/DVD player with a HMDI out connection that works fine when connected to my TV. The video setting on the VCR/DVD are 720P. In FCP I have chosen the “Blackmagic HDTV Intensity Pro 720P 60 Uncompressed” capture/input setting. If I unplug the HDMI cable from the VCR/DVD and plug it back in I see the video for about 4 seconds and then just a gray screen. I have tried several video tapes all with the same results.
    Any suggestions?
    Dennis

I am having the same problem. I edit reels and was trying to use the higher quality HDMI input to capture video from my DVD player for client's video reels.
I could be mistake, but I do 'recall' hearing that you cannot record HDMI video (copyright issues) but only play back HDMI. We may be stuck using component.
Intensity Pro's website only mentions recording HDMI video from a camcorder with an HDMI output.
Maybe someone will clear this up for us with a definite answer. I have put a request in to Blackmagic support and will let you know what they say.

  • FCP w/ Intensity Pro for monitoring

Disclaimer: before someone points me to www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/ .. yes, I have already looked there. I would like opinions on the card more than hard specs ..
My main concern at the moment is not ingest, but monitoring. I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive solution (in the vacinity of $500) to do accurate SD monitoring, and would love it if the device could be used in some way as part of a future HD monitoring setup.
I've been looking a lot at BlackMagic's Intensity Pro card. I've read that HD monitoring through HDMI isn't the most accurate thing in the world, but is certainly better than an LCD screen.. but how is SD monitoring with this card? Would I be losing any accuracy vs. the SD of a Kona 3? I know the Insenity only has RCA plugs which are not the most professional connectors in the world, but I'm not sure how that might effects things other than inhibiting me from purchasing a total top of the line SD monitor.
Another piece of hardware I was looking at was the Matrox MXO (at over twice the price of the Intensity) which seems like it would definitely be at least slightly better for HD .. but possibly no difference for SD??
I'd love to hear some opinions! Thanks!

I just got a dream setup: Intensity Pro and the new 30" monitor from Gateway, with multiple inputs including HDMI. The monitor has PiP which displays a beautiful HD video in full motion, using the HDMI connection from the Intensity card. Of course the PiP can also display SD video through the S-video or composite or component inputs, and the audio comes with it. With this you don't need an HD TV unless you must have perfect display for professional nitpicking. The PiP is fully adjustable in size and position, so you can still have lots of room on the monitor for FCP display, with a good crisp appearance. However, the monitor does put out some heat, so sitting close on a warm day you will feel it. Other brands are coming out already with similar connections, but the key is HDMI PiP displaying smooth video. I also have 24" and 22" monitors to complete the display panorama.

  • Black magic intensity pro and fcp 5.14

hi i just installed a black magic intensity pro card to my system since i was having real bad times caputuring anything without dropping many frames and not good video using my sony hdr-fx7 camcorder. well now i get general error 34 messages when i click on audio-video settings. any one with this card can help me please. yes i only have 2 gigs of ram at the moment but i'm getting 2 more are coming today. i should still be able to use my s.d. camcorder and caputure sd footage right?
i tried my autosave vault files, but it still pops up with the general error 34 message.
    thank you

+thanks for all replies.i installed 2 more gig of ram making 4 and the error 34 still shows+
Maybe nobody replies because nobody has a solution for your problem...
Anyway... I think the best way to solve the problem is to contact the Blackmagic support since it could be an issue related to their product rather than an FCP issue...

  • Using BlackMagic Intensity Pro Video Compression card with FCP in a MacPro

BlackMagic is offering the Intensity Pro card that they claim is enhancing the quality of video compression for better results than software driven compression, even with Standard DV in addition to HDV, and at a surprisingly cheap cost (less than $300).
    http://www.h-digital.com.au/hardware/hardwareview.asp?id=152
As someone used such hardware driven compression card in a MacPro ?
Does-it really help making better quality DVDs?
If not are there better hardware driven compression card?

7-8 years ago, we said that analog video was at the low end and DV was at the high end.
Uh, DV was NEVER on the high end. Digibeta and Beta were analog, and were HIGHER end than DV. Just because it was digital doesn't mean it was better. DV is compressed 5:1 and has 4:1:1 color sampling. Beta was 4:2:2 and better than DV...and Digibeta was and still is the high end SD format. DVCPRO 50 a close second. No...DV came in on the low end...like HDV comes in on the low end of the HD spectrum.
If this Intensity card does not help to get better compression than software driven compression, is there another card which can do so ?
Well, I answered this, but you must have missed my answer, so I will bold it for you: *THERE IS NO CARD OUT THERE FOR THE MAC THAT WILL AID IN DVD COMPRESSION.* I don't know about the PC side, so I make the statement to include MAC only. There are several hardware solutions for encoding DVDs that distributors use when making the theatrical DVDs like OCEANS 13...but those are separate hardware encoders. And no, again, those encoders are not available on a Mac.
What I mean at the end is to find ways to have higher quality DVDs than when using software such as Compressor. Do you follow me ?
I follow you....you aren't following me. Since I am an editor and not a distributor, I don't know what those solutions are. They exist outside of the editing world, so you have to GOOGLE this or look elsewhere. Needless to say, the Intensity does not aid in this. No capture card does. That is not what they are designed for. They are designed to capture non-firewire formats and to output to non-firewire formats...not to aid in DVD compression.

  • Does anyone know the FCP 7 capture settings for Blackmagic Intensity Pro?

What are the three settings I should use for black magic intensity pro?

You really should be asking the the blackmagic people. What does your manual say?
There are only a few ways to set up , hook up and use a card like Blackmagic. The directions are specific.
    But I've never used one.

  • Digitizing Beta-SP (FCP + Blackmagic Intensity Pro)

    Hello,
I'm trying to digitize Beta-SP tapes (deck is a Sony UVW 1200)
video is ok but the audio seems to be clipped. I'm using the XLR connectors.
(I tried to adjust the input volume in sys.pref.>audio>blackmagicaudio but the slider always jumps back to max position.
am I missing something? would a mixer solve this problem?!
    many thanks for help
    p.

    before someone else tells you!
i just did this like a week ago. the intensity pro can't recognize the device, so you have no controls over the audio using final cut. you can try a mixer. it was recommended that i use one, i had trouble getting it set up, and we ended up just capturing it and saying screw the audio because we're not really using it anyways.
you can also get an adapter that allows the intensity to recognize the deck, can't remember the name, hopefully someone will post it. Twin Scan if i remember right. you can also reference this huge discussion of the same topic i posted a week or so again here:

  • Matrox MXO or Blackmagic Intensity Pro?

I just bought the Dell 2408 monitor, which I like thus far, and am looking to use it as both a second computer monitor and also an NTSC preview monitor in conjunction with FCP. Playing via S-video on my DSR-11 looks positively terrible- so what's the best solution? Intensity Pro? Matrox?

are you suggesting that this is counterproductive?
The MXO/ACD combination isn't recommended for standard definition monitoring. It is only recommended for high definition. For SD ou can use the MXO in combination with an SD broadcast monitor...but the MXO/ACD is not a good solution for standard definition viewing.
Per the Vortex EX-1 video, they suggest editing in SD and then rendering later.
Rendering? You mean upconverting? I don't know how viable that workflow is when it comes to tapeless formats. Because they tend to only be importable at full resolution. The extra steps needed to make low res...edit...then reconnect to the full res, plus the drives you need to have both the low res and high res available is counter productive, IMHO.
Do what the others suggest...import and work at FULL HD resolution (XDCAM doesn't take up a lot of space, it is compressed HD). This way you can use your MXO and ACD to see a GREAT picture...and downconvert when you are done. The MXO does that on the fly.
The Spyder is unnecessary in combination with the MXO. The MXO has a utility to set your monitor up to bars, with a proper BLUE ONLY option. You can see how that is done in my review.

  • Premiere pro CC14, Blackmagic Intensity Pro

Im in the process of changing from FCP ver7 using a BMD Intensity Pro card (lowest priced BMD device) to Ppr cc14.  Would love to hear if anyone is using that card with Premiere Pro CC 14 and either running

wouldn't Premiere Pro limit your color bit depth to 8 and your BMD be capable of a larger bit depth?

  • MacPro, BlackMagic Intensity Pro video card and output to HDTV

    Hello folks,
I purchased an Intensity Pro card a little while back, but haven't actually gotten to use it. I captured most of my video material through firewire. I have a MacPro and I'd like to view photos from iPhoto, renders of my 3D work and possibly stream Netflix to my HDTV. Both of my DVI outputs from my ATI Radeon card feed my two desktop cinema Displays, leaving the DVI output from the Intensity Pro card open. Before I go an buy a DVI to HDMI adapter from Apple I want to know if the Intensity Pro DVI port only works if I'm in editing mode with Final Cut or Adobe Premiere or will it output anything at anytime as it it was just another graphics card?
Thanks so much for any help,

  • Blackmagic Intensity Pro problem plackback on external LCD TV

    Hi there,
Recently installed Intensity Pro card on my Mac Pro and trying to work on FCP6. I use a 1280x720 9 sec footage for testing but there's a problem to playback on a external LCD TV via HDMI cable. The playback on FCP canvas plays fine but the LCD TV just showing a still image. I've tried to test on a SD 720x480 footage which works fine both on FCP canvas and LCD TV even a general CRT 4:3 TV. Sure I have select the Video Playback under View to "Intensity HDTV 720p 60". Are there any other settings need. Will anyone knows what happen or need any settings? Please advice.
    Many Thanks.
    Kory

Kory - the BlackMagic card is temperamental.
With FCP, I've found that if I capture using the card, for a few seconds, that the output to the HDMI monitor gets 'fixed'.
Or, sometimes it will just start working on its own. Maybe after I stop and re-start FCP.
I even returned my card for replacement. Unsure why they have such issues. But once you figure, by trial an error, a technique for getting the display to work, it does basically work. It's just quirky.
With Motion output, sometimes I have to use the wrong output rate to see the output, and - then suddenly it will decide it wants the correct output rate.
    But, I'm going out at 1920 x 1080 - and haven't tried other resolutions.
Good luck. Try complaining to BlackMagic and see if you can escalate the problem up the food chain. Maybe if enough complain they will fix it (they were telling me that it wasn't supposed to display 1080p, but it certainly does - well, somehow converted to 1080i by the card or by FCP).
One other thing you might try, is an HDMI switch from monoprice. Might help with locking on the hdmi output. I use one of those for monitoring from hdmi input of camera, and I seem to remember playing with it while dealing with the no picture, or still picture issues of HDMI output to my monitor.

  • Blackmagic Intensity Pro Video Card

I am in need of a HDTV/HDMI video out solution when playing back Quicktime movies in Logic Pro 8. Can anyone report success with the Blackmagic Intensity Pro card? Or are there better alternatives (besides Firewire out).

  • Blackmagic Intensity Pro is on the fritz

So, I just put together a nice new rig: new Mac Pro (see specs), 20" Cinema Display, FCP Studio 2, etc, and a Blackmagic Intensity Pro. I got the Blackmagic card so I can monitor HD footage on a 32" LG 1080p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV (32 LG70) . I've installed the Blackmagic Intensity pro, updated its drivers, and connected it to the LG via the most expensive Monster Cable HDMI/HDMI available.
My current FCP project uses HDV 1080i60 footage. I have chosen the Intensity HDTV 1080i 59.94 - HDV Easy Setup in FCP. Here is the problem: Sometimes the audio/video signal reaches the LG, and sometimes it doesn't. Whether it works or not doesn't seem to correspond to anything. It works one day, the next it doesn't--when no settings have changed. When it does not work, I get one of two messages on the blank LG screen: "Invalid Format" or "No Signal."
The only way to ensure that the signal reaches the LG is to open the computer's system settings, and under the Intensity option, where it says"Select Output Processing," choose one of the downconvert options. I can then monitor my footage, but in a crappy, downconverted state.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Blackmagic Intensity Pro's drivers multiple times, with no success. I've tested the card by connecting it to a smaller Samsung monitor, with no success. I've tried tweaking the settings in FCP, checking the HDMI connection, using different HDMI inputs on the LG, and so on and so forth for the past 48 hours. I have no clue what to do at this point. I'm basically at the mercy of this Blackmagic card that sometimes, for no apparent reason, kicks in and works, but mostly dysfunctions. Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially as Blackmagic support is closed on the weekends. Thanks.

Brad - the good news is that with some tweaking - you can get it to work.
The bad news is that it is very temperamental.
I've found that I can always get it to output 1920 x 1080 24p if I select 'capture now' with a video camera connected to HDMI input.
Sometimes, just doing that without one connected, will do the trick. Had to close FCP and then open it again.
Sometimes a reboot would 'fix' things.
Sometimes, I'd want to sacrifice a chicken and do a dance.
Lately, it has surprised me, and just worked.
If you play with Motion, you'll find that you may need to change from 59.94 the nearest other resolution (maybe 50i? I'm doing a backup now so can't look).
And Motion will play perfectly, and then all of a sudden, it will want 59.94 to synch.
I tried 4 different HDMI monitors, and a 40' Sharp HTMI TV. Was messed up the same way with ALL of them.
I tried an HDMI switch, didn't help.
I tried swapping out the card for a new one from Black Magic, zero change.
Try yelling at their tech support. They really should fix this. They would deny to me that 1080 24p would even work, very frustrating. Tech support has not been much help, and doesn't seem to be very aware of what's going on. I had to send them a small file to show them it would play it. Must be some higher level folks at their company somewhere.
They could sell a lot more if they'd enable color calibration on it - and they could do this as drivers are about the same as for their DecLink (one tech even said there was a way to do this, get DecLink drivers to work, but he wouldn't tell me, I'd love to find out how).
    Good Luck!

  • Blackmagic Intensity Pro Output

So I thought that with CS6, pretty much any sequence could ouput via my BlackMagic Intensity Pro, and I didn't have to be in a BM sequence. Well, I have found that I am restricted by resolution and framerate - I have to be in a 720p60 sequence or nothing will output to my TV (which is a 720p TV). This is quite a problem as I am almost exlcusively working in 1080p24 sequences. Am I doing something wrong? Or have I misenterpretted the capabilities? FCP was able to pretty much ouput any seq/frame rate with the card.
    -sam

I'm demoing CS6 and had my own thought on this.  Let me see if this helps articulate the problem.
The crux of the matter is, in Final Cut Pro as an example, the BM Intensity output is completely independent of whatever sequence settings you use.  This has never been possible and is still not possible in Premiere.
In my case, I use an older HD CRT for color correction that only accepts and outputs 1080i and I often edit 23.98 material. The main thing in FCP -- I could always leave my monitor on no matter what I was editing.
In Premiere Pro CS5 and earlier, the framerate output of the Intensity always changes to match the BM sequence. Obvious, yes.
So I knew I had to only use 29.97 Intensity sequences. I knew if I jumped to a BM sequence I would get a normal picture.  When I jumped back to a regular, say AVCHD 23.98 sequence for instance, it would shut the Intensity output off. It wasn't ideal, but the output signal was simply controlled by whatever sequence I selected.
Now, because of CS6's new way of outputting video to the Intensity, unless I always only edit in 29.97 or deselect the Intensity output in the menu, I am constantly having to either shut my monitor off myself, or dig down into some submenu to deselect the Intensity output. Honestly, it's a pain.
For me CS6 is a step backwards in video output to the BM Intensity card.
