FCP/Keynote integration

More and more, I, and others, are using Keynote-generated movies in FCP.
For many a project, this is way faster and more convenient than using livetype or motion.
The problem however is that keynote is not integrated : you can't drop a .key file as you would a .jpr(livetype) on the timeline, and then have it modified by right-clicking it from the timeline and choose "open in editor".
So this is definately a "feature" request !
all it'd take is to have a FCP integration tab within keynote prefs, to define defaults quicktime export setting to work hand in hand with FCP.
(for the moment, you have to manually re-export from keynote, then "link" to the new movie in FCP : hassle)

oops, i thought this page was read by apple team, and kind of feedback/feature request place...
seems not

  • Go back one animation on the iPad for Keynote integrated in iBooks Author

When playing a Keynote presentation, you can go back one animation if you hold down the Shift key while pressing the back arrow key.
But how can you do this on the iPad when you have integrated the Keynote presentation with a widget in iBooks Author?
Tapping or swiping brings forward each animation step by step. Bu swiping backward brings you back to the start of the slide.
Is there an equivallent for Shift+back arrow on the iPad for iBooks?

I have the same issue.  I am also using the Keynote remote from my Iphone.

  • Exported Keynote presentation improperly exported by FCP

    Hi all,
I have the following problem, I use Keynote to create a presentation for my company's customer (large Japanese car maker). They requested it in a format that could be used by their staff to present to the board. The best solution is to use the Send to iDVD function, and this one works fine (regardless the fact that during export Keynote does something evil to the presentation and doesn't preserve aspect ration etc.). For that reason I used the Export to QuickTime (settings: Apple ProRes (HQ) 422, no audio, resolution 1280x720 [just because a week of trial and error showed that this resolution scales down perfectly to PAL 16:9 DVD]) and the movie plays perfectly. The only reason I need to use FCP is to adjust slides' timings etc. The resulting QT movie is imported perfectly into FCP (requires no rendering, blah blah), I cut it up the way the presentation runs smooth and everything, timing are cool. Now trying to export it anywhere, using any available format gives me CRAP. Half of the transitions are off or gone completely, instead of some slides I get stills, etc. Is it me doing something wrong or is the Keynote export doing something funny to the QT movie it is creating that is misunderstood by FCP. I wasted a week trying to figure it out, no luck. Another problem that shows up now and then is that the QTed Keynote is incomplete under FCP, ie. missing randomly from few seconds to few minutes. Any help is appreciated.

How can I get Keynote directly into FCP? I already am exporting it into QT ProRes HD, the iDVD is only a final step of the process. Yes, I am upset, it is a BIG project and I cannot fail, not because some stupid configuration mistake as I still hope it is me doing something wrong not some FCP/Keynote bug.
It's not a bug. It's you. ProRes is a delivery format, not an editing format. Forget it. Export stills out of Keynote, tiffs or jpegs. You decide.
iDVD only does MPEG2, maybe in HDV format, I do not know, I have never used iDVD.
Most of us would create the images from scratch within FCP's graphics and text editors or in Motion because of the peculiar needs of video for pixel thickness and color gamut. Translating bad slide shows to video just makes bad video (and there is no such thing as a good Keynote or PowerPoint presentation).

  • 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel core i7     WILL IT WORK WITH FCP?

I am planning on purchasing the new IMAC 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel core i7 27" screen for work with FCP. The requirements to install FCP state in relevent part:
ATI or NVIDIA graphics processor (integrated Intel Graphics processors not supported).
Does this mean that the 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel core i7 27" screen will NOT OPERATE FCP. I know that the Quad-Core Intel i7 is an upgrade for the system should I stay with the basic NVIDIA graphics processor?

I understand there is a difference between the "graphics cards" and the Processor and Memory?
    Graphics Cards:
27-inch model with dual-core processor, one of the following:
ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
    27-inch model with quad-core processor:
ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
I am going to purchase the quad-core processor which will come with the ATI Radeon HD 4850 processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
The Processor and memory according to Apple Specs are as follows:
27-inch models only, one of the following:
2.66GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor with 8MB shared L3 cache; Turbo Boost dynamic performance up to 3.2GHz
2.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with 8MB shared L3 cache; Turbo Boost dynamic performance up to 3.46GHz; Hyper-Threading for up to eight virtual cores
I would like to purchase the 2.8GHz quad-core Intel core i7 processor
This is where my concern is when FCP says (integrated Intel graphics processors not supported)!

  • MacBook Pro won't mount mxf card reader

Hi - I have a brand new MacBook Pro.  I need to import some footage on MXF cards.  I usually use Content Browerser to do this.  I have a card reader and thunderbolt cable which work on another MacBook Pro.  But it will not mount the card reader at all.  I can't see the files or device.  Is there something else that I need to install for the card reader to be able to show up?

sorry SxS cards with mxf files obviously... I've downloaded and installed the SxS card reader drivers and UDF drivers and download and install the FCP X integration plugin
    and it won't mount

  • FINAL CUT HD (4,5) IN TIGER

I just installed tiger and then updated to 10.4.4 Now my capture feature in FCP HD will not recognize my video deck. says that video source is missing. IMOVIE will run properly with the deck and captures but FCP does not. Does anyone know if there is a problem with Tiger and FCP 4.5 or does Tiger work only with FCP 5
    Please help
    g4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I find that FCP 4.5 works just fine with 10.4.4. I found that after the install of 10.4.X, the FCP preferences had to be trashed and Compressor had to be re-installed. I can also recommend repair of permissions before and after. iMovie is not a good indicator of how FCP is integrated with the OS.

  • Transparent background from motion to Final Cut pro

    Hi Guys,
Can someone help me with this. If I do stuff in LiveType the basic background is trasparent, which means no background. And I can easily export it to final cut and use it how it is. But in Motion it gives me always a background. In the view by the chanels i can set it to transparent, but when I export it as a mov file the background colour is there.
So is there anyone who could help me how to work out this problem.
    Thanks in advance,
    Andor Zahonyi

    Heya Andor,
As the other folks posted: LiveType defaults to exporting movies using the Animation codec (which supports alpha/transparency). The default codec in Motion (for SD and DV projects) is the DV/NTSC codec, which doesn't support alpha/transparency. Just click on the 'Options' button in the Export dialog window and pick the Animation codec.
Better yet, do as Rodrigo and Graham suggested and take advantage of the FCP<->Motion integration. No need to even render. Rather than re-explain stuff that is already well-covered in the documentation, go to the Help menu, open the manual, and go to Appendix C. It will give you clear, step-by-step instructions on how to roundtrip between FCP and Motion. Check it out.
    Good luck with your project!

  • Mathtype

Since I upgraded to snow leopard, I have had problems with the symbol font used by MathType (in Keynote).
I have always used symbol italic for lower case Greek variables, which is my preference, and I thought the default. However, with the new unicode font system in SL, this option gives some strange roman font, and so I now have to use symbol plain. That's too bad, but I can live with it.
What's worse, is that sometimes, when I am editing old lecture notes (in Keynote), the old formulas have to be changed, meaning opening every one, redefining the style, and re-saving. Strangely, sometimes when I first open an old file, the formulas are fine (with the old symbol-italic), then suddenly, they all go bad, as if they've decided to re-render themselves, and I have no idea what I've done to trigger this.
If anyone has any suggestions for getting back the old symbol-italic in MathType, (ii) preventing the re-rendering from happening on old files, or (iii) performing a batch change for all formulas in a file, I'd appreciate hearing them.

Using the keynote insert system, you seem to wind up with a kind of graphic in keynote. It's not clear to me how the font in that could ever change.
You also get some kind of graphic if you save as eps and then insert from a file (which is way more work, by the way). If you open the eps in Preview and copy and paste, you lose the equation formatting. How are you doing it? The graphic from Insert-MathType is editable with MathType. In any case, I think the old equations that are changing unpredictably now, were inserted from MT5 (before the keynote integration was available) using a simple copy and paste (which also produces some kind of graphic). To edit these equations, you copy and paste back to MathType.
You can define the font to be used for this palette in Style/Define, and unicode greek is not an option.
Even so, the Greek characters I got via copy/paste from Mathtype's save as function were Unicode.
If I do this (using Preview), I get the symbol font in keynote.
What font does MathType say you are using for lower case greek if you go to Style/Define? If I select symbol-italic there, I do not see greek letters even within MathType. So I have to select symbol-plain. What is selected in your case?
I wonder if the problem is something other than non-Unicode fonts.....
Me too. So, another question I have is why does iWork not allow symbol-italic even in its own text boxes? The symbol font is there, but only plain is allowed. In Word, it is still possible to use symbol-italic.
(Thanks for taking the time to help sort this out.)

  • Setting up the correct custom project size size for keynote presentation in FCP 7 or motion?

    Hi...anyone else do this?
I have been creating and editing films in FCP (not X) for years now and have got into creating the whole presentation for clients awards ceremonies etc. via Keynote on my iPad via HDMI to HD projectors and it looks amazing and is seamless on the night. No need for crappy powerpoint slides and jumping to low res DVD films - its all controlled via my iPad.
But i want to up the creativity of the presentations - at the moment we import the films as mp4 HD QT files and jpegs of the speakers/nominees/titles screens etc. created in Photoshop and put the whole thing together in Keynote on my iPad. It worked a treat and my clients love it!
Now i had a thought and did a test and created Motion graphics versions of the speakers titles and nominees screens in Apple Motion - so that they had an animated section at the start with whoosh audio stingers as they are played and not just stills - and then export them as QT files - import to FCP 7 timeline and export to compresser ready to convert to mp4 for Keynote.
This way i can extend the static part of the screen after the motion graphic part to say 10 mins as i never know how long the speaker will be on stage.
Then when the speaker moves on the next item i can hit the ipad which will move to the next presentaion screen!
    Q. Now ive been doing these as HD 16:9 screens - but when imported to Keynote I have a white band top and bottom on the screen so i really need to start with a template screen size of 1024 x 768 for Keynote and also keep this size in FCP 7! And also export to Quicktime as the same size.
When i do static jpegs to import into Keynote i just define the pixel canvas size - 1024 x 768 @ 300dpi in Photoshop and it works fine but im not sure what to do in Motion or PCP as I have always created my films in 16:9 HD widescreen preset!
Anyone else doing this and got a solution to my problem and can help with custom project sizes in motion and FCP 7!

1024x768 is 4x3.  2048x1536 is 4x3.  Both of these are current display dimensions for iPads 1-3.
HD video (1920x1080 or 1280x720) is a 16x9 aspect ratio.
Try putting a rectangle in a square. Unless you scale the retangle up and lose image on the sides you will not be able to properly fill the entire 4x3 display area. The easy compromise is letterboxing to ensure all of the rectangle is display in the square. The iPad is doing this with very little effort on your part.
In FC you can create a new sequence and go into the settings and customize it to 1024x768, 2048x1536 or
just about any other dimension. Even If you create a custom sequence at 1024 or 2048 in FC you will see the same results that the iPad is giving you with much less effort, render and conversion time (presuming your keynote workspace cannot change in dimensions or aspect ratio and you are unwilling to crop your 16x9 aspect ratio video to fill the space.)

  • FCP won't play Keynote QT movie

Just converted a Keynote presentation into a QT movie but it refuse to playin FCP, it plays ok in Quick Time. When I try and play it in FCP it brings up the message 'general error' and 'File Error'. The Keynote QT movie of the music plays ok in FCP though.
This is the first time I have tried converting a Keynote presentaion to QT so I guess I did or do soemthing.
    Any thoughts?

    I used H.264. Frame size 720 x 576.
Now bearing in mind I am running FCP 3.0.9, do you think this might be the problem? I know that codec is available for exporting in my version of FCP so I thought it would be able to import it too??

  • Keynote Slipping Positioning after FCP export

I am importing Keynote ('09) movies into Final Cut Pro (latest version). The movies come in at 1280x720, 29.97 frame rate... the same video settings as my FCP sequence.
I set my in and out points, insert it into the timeline in FCP, and everything looks ducky. But when I export the whole sequence through Compressor, the Keynote videos have moved from their in and out points by 2-3 seconds!
I'm totally at a loss as to why the Keynote stuff is shifting, especially when it's all cued correctly in the FCP timeline. It did this in earlier Keynote and FCP versions alike.
    Help!

    Hi Tom,
Thanks for your reply. The codec is HDV 720p30 in both Keynote and FCP. I tried exporting the sequence to Quicktime, and then into Compressor, and that still did not work. I'm stumped as to why my timing is slipping...

  • Best FCP QT export settings for HD video to Keynote?

I am exporting 3-5 minute long HD video clips shot at 1080i and then deinterlaced in FCP. These short vids will be embedded within Keynote, which is starting to have a problem with these 1gb to 2gb files (when exported at h264.)
HDV already reduces image sharpness it is. I want to keep the quality/footage sharpness up as high as possible. The selected video size ends up being about 1065 x 569, but that is a size, not a sharpness, one of the things I always found confusing when referring to it as "resolution".
So what settings would you suggest when outputting via FCP?

I found (via a friend who is experienced in Pr & En) that it all comes down to the export/authoring settings.
In Pr, my export settings needed to be adjusted as follows:
    Format: MPEG2-DVD
Preset: PAL Progressive Widescreen High Quality
Selected 'DVD' in the Basic Settings section of the
Multiplexer tab (this creates a single mpeg file rather than a m2v file which has a separate video and audio file)
Selected the highest possible quality (5) in the Basic Video Settings section of the Video tab, changed the TV Standard to PAL (to suit Australian TVs) and then
Set the minimum/target/maximum bitrate settings to 8Mbps (when I set it at 9Mbps, the final file had too high a bitrate for DVD)
In the Audio tab, I selected PCM as the audio type.
I also ensured that the Use Maximum Render Quality checkbox was ticked at the bottom of the export settings window.
    Then I exported.
    Once encoding was complete I opened Encore, started a new project, selected DVD as the authoring mode and PAL as the Television Standard within the Basic settings for the new project. I then imported the final mpeg file as a timeline into Encore, set all the appropriate first play/title button/end play functions as necessary, then I opened the Edit Quality Presets window from the File menu and made the following settings;
    Format: MPEG2-DVD
Presets: PAL DV High quality 8Mb CBR 1 Pass
Basic Video Settings - Quality: set to maximum (5)
Basic Video Settings - Field Order: None (Progressive)
Basic Video Settings - Pixel Aspect Ratio: Widescreen 16:9
Basic Video Settings - Bitrate Settings - Bitrate [Mbps]: set to maximum (9)
Basic Audio Settings - Audio Format Settings: Audio Format: PCM
    click OK
Then I authored the DVD and was quite pleased with the result. Still not quite to the quality I was hoping for (i.e. the quality of a DVD movie), but still a significant improvement on my initial attempts using default Pr & En settings.
    Hope it helps

  • Combing Keynote, Motion and FCP. Best Strategy?

Ok Im trying to do a project where Im using Keynote content, Motion content and FCP content.
My final screen delivery will be on a flat screen plasma monitor with a native resolution of 852 x 480.
I am going to be playing this back as a looping Quicktime movie from a Mac to the plasma screen. The screen will be functioning essentially as a computer monitor.
The piece will only be about 3-4 minutes max run time.
The video I've shot is standard DV resolution: 720 x 480.
I am building the whole project at 852 x 480 so I dont have to scale up the video to fit the final screen size vertically.
I was intending to piece it all together in Motion.
(Exporting Quicktime renderings from Keynote and Final Cut at high resolution and placing them on the timeline in Motion...)
Now, with Motion and FCP's ability to transfer files back and forth, am I using the best strategy? Should the whole thing be assembled in FCP? Or is Motion just as good for assembly.
(I want to use Motion because I find it's interface way easier to push around than FCP and much less cryptic...)
Is there any slicker way to bring in Keynote material than to do the exporting to Quicktime thing?
Any advise I could get from all you motion gurus out there would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Well after actually starting in on the real construction of this project it has become very obvious it must be assembled in FCP.
Now that I have resolved myself to that fact, I have a few issues:
I've exported all my Keynote stuff in Animation Codec.
Is that better than H.264? (Seemed to be slightly sharper on type edges)
I tried setting up the sequence to have H.264 compression but it refused to accept any imports.
I changed it back to NTSC DV Codec and it accepted to imports no prob.
Must all FCP projects use DV codec?
You cant tell them to use a different compression system?
(This is one of those areas of FC that I find utterly mysterious.)
When I bring the Keynote clips into my FCP document, they look crunchy.
    And they stumble on playback.
Is that just temporary in the editing environment.
The video plays back pretty clean...
Can I get all the files to play back cleanly in FC as Im working on them?
Will the compression used in my sequence be ignored upon export to the Final Quicktime?
And what's the deal with the frame rates on the Keynote files.
Even though I specified 29.97 on export, when I get info on the files theyre all over the place (20fps, 24fps...)
    Is that a problem?

  • Keynote transition effects on fcp

Just wondering if anyone know how I can use keynote effects on fcp. Or how I can get transition plugins that Keynote program is using to use in fcp.

    Hi MooVee,
Afraid that Keynote and FCP are two different beasts, so there's no plug-in infrastructure or the like to share transition styles.
You can, however, generate clips in Keynote and export them as QuickTime movies into Final Cut. I use Keynote as my primary titling tool, as it's so fast and easy to use. For creating titles, be sure that your Master has a Transparent (None) background, and your slide the same. Then create your title animation, and Export it as a QuickTime movie with the "Include transparency" checkbox ticked, and using the Animation compression settings. This will give you a QT clip with an alpha channel that you can add to your FCP timeline.
I sometimes monkey with the size of the Keynote master to match the video size, and bring in still screenshots form the video to put in as a compositional reference (deleting it, of course, when I export the movie). But as you know, you can ultimately adjust the placement of the video in FCP, so it's not always necessary.

  • Keynote / PP to DVD (via FCP and DVD SP)

This is going to sound weird, but I have been working on this for a while.
I know FCP and DVD SP pretty well. I have a Powerpoint presentation (170 MB or so), 2 hours long. The person who did the PP presentation is not that great a designer, but it's basically Text with some graphics / picts.
I exported all the slides (over 100 of them) as TIFFs (highest quality, 720 x480.
Imported them into FCP. I did a 2 hour audio recording in Logic and imported that into FCP and line up the audio.
    All looks good.
Until an export, I have tried all type of FCP tricks I know. Like setting the Compressor setting in FCP to a higher codec, like Animation, Apple ProRes 422.
The QT looks fine as a small window, but when you double the size or go Full Screen, it looks horrible.
What gives? It just seems like once you go to DVD (Standard Def 480 lines) it just looks like crap as a movie, on a TV or on an LCD.
In Keynote or PP, when you present, it seems both KN and PP have some technology that auto up rezzes the slides so it looks great fullscreen on a 23" ACD, or 30" ACD.
I may just save in Powerpoint as a "Powerpoint Show", with audio attached to each slide, this seems like the best bet to get the best resolution.
I am not sure this can be done as a movie and then put onto DVD, but perhaps it can be done HD with HD resolution.
Can one uprez the TIFFs to HD rez (1080) in Photoshop or some other plugin (i know we did this with SD clips a few years ago with a plugin from a company in canada).
Then do an HD project in FCP (Apple ProRes 422) and then use Compressor as H.264, that would have to look pretty good.
Of course it would only be file based, unless one burned to Blu Ray, but who the heck has Blu Ray players, still not that common.

Thanks for the no reply, no help, great.
I figured it out, stay away from FCP for this,
Use Powerpoint and Keynote 08, then use iSpring (Pro) (Windows, Parallels or BootCamp) to export PPT file (with mp3 audio) to a Flash (swf) file. Plays great in any web browser with Flash plugin, or Eltima or other Flash / SWF player
