Fcp lag on macbook pro
i've noticed a lag when editing on my macbook pro. It's something i've never experienced in fcp, and indeed is only happening on my mbp, not on my slower imac.
it's pretty subtle, but very annoying. basically the mouse freezes up for about 3 seconds. it's usually when i'm in the timeline. i press play, it starts playing right away, but the mouse is unresponsive for about 3 seconds.
both my machines have 2gb of ram, both running fcp 6.0.1.
has anyone else experienced this? any ideas?
thanks.
I also had problems with the trackpad periodically stuttering on my new MBP.
Someone suggested that I turn off the "Ignore accidental trackpad input" in the system preffs.
I think it may have helped. Although I still experience missed letters when typing.
Let me know if you see a difference.
good luck,
g

Photoshop cs6 lags on macbook pro retina 15'
Recently I got my hands on photoshop cs6 but my brush lags quite a bit while using it. This happens when I'm zooming in to do minor details or if I'm using a brush more than 200
I've heard good things about design production on macbooks but so far I've seen the opposite. Is there anyway to solve the brush lag problem from Apple's end?I am using a student version which is running atm on a windows 7 64 bit macbook pro retina 15. The best thing i can try doing is downgrade to CS5. Though i'm positively sure if I installed photoshop less than a few weeks ago, it would be at the latest...

Adobe Photoshop CC lags on Macbook Pro when moving layer content around
Hi,
We just bought new Macbook Pro laptops last Friday and also got Adobe Photoshop CC and Adobe Illustrator CC. Everything works pretty fine, except moving layer content eg. images or fonts around is a bit behind, slow/laggy, without any apparent reason.
This happens despite external screen connected or not. It also happens with or without power adapter connected. We have brand new Mac OS Mavericks and 16GB RAM so performance should not be a problem.
I hope you can help out, we are a digital agency and do a lot of graphical work. Thanks in advance.

DisplayPorti cant believe this problem is still happening. same exact issue here. photoshop cs6 and CC run like **** on my macbook but run smooth on windows 7 on the same exact hardware, macbook pro 2.5ghz core i5, 16gb ram and intel hd 4000. ive talked with applecare about this, adobe support (who hasn't called me back twice now) and no response on how to fix this. its absolutely ridiculous that we are having to go through this much trouble to get this problem fixed. ive brought it up over 5 times now and no solution except for the usual suggestions (turn off hardware acceleration, delete your preferences, yada yada). same hardware, mac osx photoshop cc lags, windows photoshop runs fine.. something is wrong with the mac version of photoshop cs6 and CC adobe please fix this as soon as possible.

FCP on New MacBook Pro 15" Appears Black!
Loaded FCP 7.0 on new MacBook Pro (15") and when I open the program the screen is black. If I take cursor to corner and show all applications I see the windows that make up FCP. When I select one of them the screen is black again.
Press ESC...or Apple-F12. For some reason it is launching in FULL SCREEN DISPLAY mode, or Digital Cinema Desktop.

Anybody experience with FCP X and Macbook pro 15inch 2.2?
My old mid 2009 macbook harddrive died on me today, and I'm thinking to upgrade. Sell the old one and buy the new 2011 2.2. The old one was slow in rendering and had lots and lots and lots of spinning beachballs. Was I pushing it too hard? Don't know, but it was horrible. I lost so much time.
Anyway, does anybody have this combo fcp x and the new 15inch macbook pro with the 1gig card and what are your findings??
Thanks
PeterI've got a 2011/2.2/8GB/6750 running FCPX. Once I troubleshooted my external HDs (a Drobo that was nearly full with Time Machine backups was slowing down the entire Firewire bus) things run a lot better. I'm currently storing video on a Promise Pegasus R4 Thunderbolt RAID and the entire system is pretty snappy. The only slowdowns are:
1. clips, events, and projects on slower hard drives can slow down launching the app and screen refreshes
2. FCPX is still flakey. It will run great for a whole day and then will refuse to launch the next morning.
3. exporting through Compressor is slow, particularly when I'm under deadline! 10 minute HD segments can take an hour or so. The Activity Monitor shows the CPUs maxed out, so I suspect that's the bottleneck. I've tried setting up distributed rendering but it doesn't work quite yet.
4. FCPX can be a RAM hog, so if you're a rabid multi-tasker like me, prepare to beachball or change your wicked ways.
All in all, FCPX runs pretty well on my MBP. If video editing was my main line of business, I'd seriously consider a Mac Pro stuffed with RAM and as many cores as I can find. I might wait for a newer one with Thunderbolt though for a bit of future-proofing.
Hope this helps... -
FCP X on MacBook Pro(to the max)
I need opinions, pros/cons on whether MacBook Pro can handle FCP X. Let's say the MBP would be my only option and it would have top of every option; ie, 512GB SSD, 8GB RAM, etc.
I am a professional editor who has a non-Intel MAC PRO (old model).
Thank you in advance. Many people use MBPs with that sort of spec very successfully.
Many also use models with a lower spec.
Having said that, if you read the forum, you will find some editors with MacPros of the highest spec complaining of problems with FCP X.
One problem is that no two people have exactly the same setup or workflow, so you can get 2 people with superficially the same equipment reporting quite different results. -
Using FCP 7 with Macbook Pro Retina Display?
Hi there
I am one of the many editor that won't be moving to FCPX and sticking with FCP 7 for the time being.
My question is has anyone used FCP 7 with the new Retina Macbook Pros ?
I'm basically looking to see it FCP 7 is useable on the retina display to help me to decide to buy one or not....My current Macbook Pro is nearly 4 years old and crying for an update but there a few concerns with the new model
1. Screen resolution is actually lower running FCP 7 and other software that isn't optimised for retina display?
2. No Firewire ports
3. No audio input
Any help really appreciatedFCP 7 is no longer in apples update lists so there is a chance that it has issues with the newer hardware (thunderbolt). I would guess there must be a firewire 800 PCIe card that could be used via a thunderbolt doc but how fcp is going to behave with it remains to be seen. Also FCP should not be able to take advantage of the retina display for the reason above.
Of course someone with such a macbook pro and fcp could always jump in this thread and clarify matters for all.
Good luck -
I have a macbook pro retina 13' late 2012. I'm expecting lag issues with safari(and others browsers) when the webs are plenty of photos/videos. I'm expecting no issues with older macbooks. Is this usual? The same happens using Dreamweaver (scrolling), with some PDFs...
Try resetting your SMC.
Erase and Reinstall OS X
Note: This will delete all data on the disk. Back up important files before continuing.
Erasing and then reinstalling OS X can give you a fresh start, making your computer exactly as it was whenever you received it from Apple. This can solve various problems such as corrupt system files.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
Press the Power Button to turn on the computer.
Press and hold both the R and Command (⌘) keys on the keyboard until the Recovery partition loads.
Select Disk Utility and then choose Continue.
Select your startup disk (Macintosh HD by default) from the left.
Select the Erase tab.
Choose the Format pop-up menu and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled), enter a name for your disk, and then click Erase.
After the disk is erased, choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility.
Select Reinstall OS X and then choose Continue.
Follow the instructions.
I hope I helped.

Common reasons for lag on MacBook Pros/Leopard?
Hi all. I have a MacBook Pro that's a couple of years old. I'm running 10.5.6 on a 2.16 GHz Core 2 with 2 GB of RAM. As of late I've been noticed some very poor performance, specifically a lot of lag and sluggishness.
This manifests itself in a few ways. I notice when I'm playing music through iTunes or streaming sites that it gets very choppy. My mouse tends to lag at times and I also notice it when using Expose (the windows don't move smoothly). I've also had a couple of system crashes lately which I rarely had previous to the last couple of months.
I've searched some forums and tried some of the fixes (e.g., repairing disk permissions) but these things haven't helped. It's possible that I just need to up my hardware although when I check Activity Monitor I sometimes, but don't always, see the CPU spiked when I'm noticing problems.
Are there any steps I can take to diagnose what's going on here and potentially fix this?Heya... Next time you are in the middle of a slow spell, definitely pop open Activity Monitor and if those CPU meters are maxed, it's because the CPU percentages of all the processes are hitting 200%. Anytime (ever) you see the meters peaking, you most definitely will be able to see who's eating it up, because the meter/graph is directly tied to the sum total of the usage of all processes. Sort it in descending order and the top apps are the prime offenders.
If you notice the CPU is mellow, check the RAM. If the pie chart doesn't have a shred of green, then you have no more free RAM and the system is now resorting to swap space. You can jump over to the disk activity meters and watch them thrash as the system is paging data from RAM to disk over and over. If you /then/ decide to try and close some husky program (aka Photoshop) that's been sitting open but unused for the past 3 hours, you're now going to wait while the system pages all that data in (while pushing something else out) before it can even just quit.
If you see all the meters totally freeze up for a few seconds, you might be having IO failures (disk drive is dying, etc.). To elaborate: if it's updating the graph every second but sometimes pauses for 5 seconds and jumps back to life.
The stuttering graphics have happened to me even on Macs with the highest specs possible. It's a pain to try and pinpoint... All the eyecandy is offloaded by the GPU so the CPU is not affected by it. It could be anything from video RAM running low to the bus getting swamped, to something causing Quartz to go wacky. I have found that simply logging out and logging back in (restarting the WindowServer) almost always fixes it. That's a lousy answer and I would love to get off my butt and find the 'what' there.
If the audio starts skipping, that can also be a number of things. Maybe the disk is overtaxed, thus your player can't read the audio data fast enough, or maybe some program is going crazy and doing things to trip up the audio pipeline. Something as simple as an app neglecting to write *one bit* of audio data can cause endless static since everything's now misaligned. It's usually software related.
If you start with the "CPU, RAM, disk activity" process of elimination, you'll generally be able to figure out what's going on. The important thing is to try and avoid trying solutions that are totally unrelated... not to mention that today it might be one thing, tomorrow the next. There is no list of things that'll work every time. =) -
10 Second Internet lag on MacBook Pro since Airport extreme CD Install
I have a MacBookPro 2.16Core Duo 17 and an Imac 24 and just purchased the new Airport Router. Hookup was a breeze, however, after installing the CD my MacBook now takes aprox 10 seconds to switch sites when surfing the net. If I connect via a ethernet cable the lag is gone. If I login to Win XP in bootcamp wirelessly, and surf the web there is no lag. I only get it from any distance when I'm on OSX latest version. I tried setting up a new user and booting into that to no avail, same problem. My wife also has two Macs, a MacPro and a PowerBook and they both have no lag wirelessly, it's just my MacBook Pro. One other side note, the lag only occurs when going from one site to another, but once I get to the site I'm at full speed, including downloads. We use Comcast.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.......I have a Macbook C2D with the N card enabled now and an Airport Extreme (802.11n). I did a speed test the other day and it rated me only at 1.7 MB/sec download. A friend on mine has the new Extreme too and a Core Duo Macbook, so he only has the 54G card, and he pulls 6 MB/sec downloads. We both use Comcast internet as well.
His girlfriend on the other hand has a new Macbook C2D with N enabled, and she only gets the 1.7 MB/sec download like me. My PC which is hooked up through Ethernet cable gets roughly 6 MB/sec download. I think it has something to do with either the firmware for the Airport card in the macs or the firmware for the Airport Extreme. Hopefully it will be resolved soon. -
Transfer FCP License from Macbook Pro to iMac
I am about to begin editing a huge project, and currently I have Final Cut Pro 7 on my Macbook Pro Version 10.6.8. I am fine to edit on this computer, but I would prefer to edit on an iMac that formerly belonged to a friend but I now have in my possession.
So my question is: what are the steps to transferring my FCP license from my Macbook Pro to the iMac?
I do a lot of traveling and editing, so I do not want this to be a permanent transfer. How will I then be able to transfer the FCP license back to the Macbook Pro in a few months?
Thanks! The FCP license allows a desktop and laptop installation just so long as they are not used simultaneously.
Install the software and have at it.

Lagging 2011 Macbook Pro 13".
I have a MacBook Pro, Latest Model 13" I bought a few weeks ago. My favorite hobbys are video games and Pro video editing. So you can tell i would have something to do with these hobbys downloaded onto My New MacBook Pro. At first I downloaded 'Modern Combat Domination' A good 3D First Person Shooter, I Had No lag problems whatsoever. The startup and shutdown was extremely quick. Then I got an Extremely advanced and 'Mac Pushing' Video editing software. Final Cut Pro X. This is when the problems started, the first few startups and shutdowns were fine. Then they began to become agonisingly slow. Thats not all, when im switching from nomal to fullscreen, My mac lags like crazy, its looks horrible. And I have magnification enabled on my Dock, when I move my mouse over the dock all the icons get cut from the middle for a tenth of a second, then while lagging, lets me move my mouse smoothely over the dock.
I am not sure what to do, should I buy MacCleanse? Or should I get it upgraded to a higher Processer and GHz (I currently have an i5 2.3 GHZ), Or something Else.
Thanks So Much For Reading, Please Help If You Have Any Ideas.Does it boot quicker if you boot into Safe Mode (hold down Shift Key during boot up). There may be a 'startup item' that launches automatically that is in the background soaking up all the extra resources and cycles on your cpu.

Mac Pro airport lags horrendously, Macbook Pro does not.
I bought Snow Leopard and installed it on my MacBook Pro and my Mac Pro, and since doing so, everything has been fine on the MBP but not the Mac Pro. On the Mac Pro, Airport lags horrendously sometimes. It seems like every couple of seconds, the wireless connection chokes up - web pages load at a snail's pace, or if I'm playing a game online it turns into a slide show for a couple seconds. None of these issues seem to occur to my MBP, which is connected to the same wireless network. Furthermore, Airport doesn't work at all when I have my location set to "Automatic" in network settings, it only works if I create a new location - all this since upgrading to Snow Leopard.
So why would these issues occur on the Mac Pro and not the MBP?Hi Sean,
Not an Airport user myself, but I thought this might be a good page for you to look around in for a possible answer. Discussion area there too.

Good luck,

I've heard that Final Cut Pro will not work on the new Mac Book Pro laptops.
Has anyone else heard this? It may take some time before they get an upgrade fror this.
I'm keen to upgrade from my 17" Powerbook G4 to the new MacBook Pro for video editing, using photoshop and after effects etc. Has anyone else heard about speed improvement in this area?
Thanks for any comment.
EZ><Yes, I believe to some degree they needed to get something out there and this is filler. I've been wanting a new 15", but will continue to use my old one. I believe it is more pro than the new MBP. I am not one of those complainers, but I live by my pci slot, especially on location, and the express/34 situation is a nightmare right now. I've read a few posts on different forums about the fw400 port not getting enough power and it being traced to the built-in isight. I don't know if it's true, but wouldn't be surprised.

Portadat to FCP 7 on MacBook Pro?
I have a timecode portadat. What hardware and software do I need to transfer it to final cut pro 7 on my macbook pro?
I"ve encountered just the opposite.. works fine with my MBP, and my MP... Both had clean installs done to them though... as in erase and install.
Since you can capture HDV, your FireWire bus is likely alright... what are you using to capture DV with?
