FCP:  MBP & NON INTEL CHIP G5

Hi everyone,
I'm an editor using FCP on my G5 DUAL (non intel chip). I'm thinking of getting a MAC BOOK PRO to edit on the road, using an external drive for all my video. Can anyone tell me if I edit a project on the road using MBP using all the video stored in the external drive, and then finishing the same project using my desktop G5, does FCP translate well from an intel chip machine to a non-intel chip one? Has anyone tried this. I'd appreciate your feedback.
Thanks,
kct

Works for me, but I'm no pro. I use the firmtek card with two sata drive external enclosure and then just hook those drives up to the G5 to a sonnet card.

  • Sun support for 1.4.0 on non-Intel ???

    Hi !
There were some questions and doubts whether Sun would support j2sdk on non-Intel chips sets.
Can someone point me to the press-releases ; rumours ; etc ???

Sun provides jdks for windows, solaris, and linux and I don't think solaris necessarily runs on intel chips. It's up to other vendors to supply jdk ports for their platforms (ie. IBM provides a jdk for AIX).

  • Epson printing with intel chip

the Gimp print 5.0.0 Beta 2 pre-installed on my new iMac (intel chip) does not allow me to access the printer utilities to adjust the printer calibration, check the ink levels or even clean the heads. does anyone know how to address the problem? is there a solution or a new beta version already?

The Epson utilities don't work with Gimp-Print
drivers. Try adding your printer using the More
Printers > Epson USB driver method.
Thanks Greg, but it doesn't work - the Epson USB options I get are for higher-end printers and they do not recognise a 1160. It attempts to print and then stalls and later prints some gobbledeegook. Apparently Epson will not re-write drivers for older printer models - would my only chance be printing from a non intel-chip computer linked on the network or is there another (software related) option?
    Thanks,

  • Uninstall FCP 5.0 and reinstall 5.1 universal binary version on non intel

I have a non intel G5 and just got another intel based Mac, i heard they have fixed the issus with compressor 2.0 in the new version of Final Cut Pro 5.1 which i have also bought and was wondering how to go about uninstalling and reinstalling FCP so that i can take advantage of compressor 2.1 and FCP 5.1. I have the rest of the FCP Studio on my non intel based Mac also but i will be leaving it installed as is, can i just update my FCP 5.1 with the FCP 5.1 disc or would it be better to do i full uninstall and than a reinstall. I have used app zapper in the past on other apps, can i use it for FCP as well, Thanks Charles

    figured it out

  • Do the Intel chips in our current MBP support Virtualization Technology?

Do the Intel chips in our current MBP support Virtualization Technology? I think there are going to be many advantages to having that supported, esp in the future. the ability to run multiple OSs at the same time is coming and i want to know if we will be able to take advantage of that technology with our current chips.

Hypervisor support doesn't allow the system to switch between active INTERACTIVE OSs.
Its designed as a more efficient replacement for products like Qemu and VMWare. Like Xen, it brings down the level of emulation/virtualization closer to hardware so that no OS has any kind of priviledge over the others (not really any host OS, just one that has control of the hypervisor.
Its awesome technology, and neat to see, but its really geared towards server virtualization (we use a variant of this in production, and can put 2-3 virtual servers on each physical machine).

  • Will FCP Studio CrossGrade work on my non-Intel Macs?

    Hello,
I am having to get the Final Cut Studio Universal Crossgrade for my new Mac Pro 2GHz Intel machine. Will the Crossgrade work on my other machines WITHOUT the new Intel chips (Power Mac G4 733MHz & G4 Powerbook 1.25 Ghz).
    Thanks,
    PM

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that the previous statements are only a half truth. I own a Mac Pro and a G-5. I upgraded to Universal on both of them and while the program works on both you can't take a saved file from the Mac Pro to the G-5. You get a "General Error" Message.
Anybody know any more information on this?

  • Sony HDR-SR11 /AVCHD/NON-INTEL MAC/HELP

I have called both sony and apple tech support and both offered little help today.
I have a Sony HDR-SR11 that I shot some HD content with. The computer registers that the camera is there as an external HDD. Sony's FAQ suggested that I save the AVCHD file to my HDD and it should work....NOPE
I hooked it up to a PC and installed the software it comes with and I was able to view my files but not export them into a normal format.
I have 2 sets of files one set is .m2t and the other is .mts both say they are Unix Executable files..***!
I have a Power MAc G5 running Leopard and Final Cut Pro 6 I ran the software update and it says that as of today 100% up to date yet it says that FCP should be 6.0.2 mine says 6.0
Apple support said that it may not even work on a non-intel Mac.....HELP
anyone get this to work, supposedly Imovie work s with it but the files are grayed out in the menus for imovie so I dunno all I know is I need this footage off the camera ASAP.
    Thanks

I came here actually looking for a different solution and not the one I'm about to say... but I will tell you that the new iMovie will import the video straight off the camera (in either 960x540 or 1920x1080). It's not ideal, but it works.
In fact, I'm doing so right now, but I came here hoping there might be news of a new fix so that FCP will import it directly (it will not, log & capture will not do it, just so others are clear on this).
That said, the video off the camera looks very nice. I'm still happy with the camera, even if I do have to do one hoop jump before I can edit.

  • Newest verison of FCP for pre-Intel G5? Flat-screen TV as monitor?

I have a pre-Intel G5 and I'd like to upgrade my FCP Suite. Which version is the "highest" I can use on my computer? I'm pretty sure the newest version is built around the Intel chips and will work slowly on my computer, so I want to get the version that will be best on my system. I'm producing a feature film (shot on 24p SD with a Panasonic AG-DVX100b) and although things are working now (I currently have FCP HD 4.5), I'd like the added bells and whistles of a newer version.
I'd also like to add a TV/monitor to my system because the video appears much darker on my monitors than on a regular TV (even after I calibrated them for video using a Huey Pro color calibrator). I currently have the captured video feeding from my computer through a cheap mini-DV camera via Firewire and then to the TV via RCA cables, which works sporadically, and I also have a SONY DVMC-DA2 analog-to-digital (and vice versa) converter box that works, again, sporadically. Is there a better way to set this up (I probably need to buy an editing deck), and has anyone had any luck (or would anyone advise) using a new 720p flat screen as a TV/monitor?
I have some other questions, but I'll ask those later. I appreciate any comments anyone might have.
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

FCS2 (aka FCP 6) is the last version for PPC machines.
If you are editing DV, keep your existing TV. Playing it back on an HDTV is not the way to go.
Use something like the Matrox MXO to feed the TV.

  • Does Intel chip enable windows software?

I currently cannot download certain software or interface with certain outsourcing companies for my business simply because I am Mac. Would the new Intel-chip Mac make any difference with this problem or do I need to buy a non-Mac PC?

While Apple has apparently said they won't go out of their way to stop people from installing Windows on Intel Macs, the Intel Macs use EFI instead of BIOS, so at least right now, it's not possible to install Windows on them natively. Several people are saying that Microsoft has committed to producing Virtual PC in a native version for Intel Macs. That should make it so Virtual PC runs at nearly full speed since the CPU won't have to be emulated, just some of the hardware access.

  • What kind of Intel Chip

What kind of Intel chip is in the new MBP? The Penryn was in the last model, but no mention is given as to the chip in the new versions. The tech specs just say the newest Intel chips.

Does this article mean that the pros are only getting some of the Montevina benefits?

  • HP w/Intel Chip and Screen Saver

My wife's computer is an "entry level" HP (I don't have the model here) with an all-in-one motherboard, using an Intel Chip for video display
For some reason (I suspect a Windoze update) her screen save no longer consistently starts as it should
I am going to check at HP to see if they have a driver update (also at Intel for the chip model) but my question...
With an LCD monitor, is there any "burn-in" danger to the monitor screen if the screen saver does not run?
If yes, my next step if I can't find a driver update at HP or Intel is to find out if the motherboard has a video card slot, and buy a separate video card so the motherboard chip is "laid to rest" and a different driver is controlling the video process

    Hi,
OK...I remember now...mostly I was reading about TV and not computer monitors...about the break-in period...  but the LCD characteristics involving image retention are similar...though more on monitors than TV as TV usually has a lot of image movement...  Here's the best description I can find, and Wiki has more, but this is best I think...
    Image Sticking
What is Image Sticking? What Causes Image Sticking?
Image persistence,         image burn-in, and image sticking are terms used to describe LCD  image         retention. LCD image retention occurs when a fixed pattern is  displayed         over a prolonged period of time. The fixed pattern causes a  parasitic         capacitance build up within the LCD component, which prevents  the liquid         crystal molecules from returning to their normal relaxed state.
All LCDs/CRTs         and color plasma displays are susceptible to image retention, at  varying         degrees. Phosphor based display devices, such as CRTs and color  plasma         displays are most susceptible, and image retention on phosphor  based         devices is often irreversible. Transmissive devices, such as  LCDs are         less susceptible, and in most cases LCD image retention can be  reversed.
The rate of image sticking depends on the image pattern,  duration of         fixed image, the temperature, and production variations.  Likewise, the         rate of diffusion of the image sticking (recovery time) also  depends         on these factors.
What Can Be Done about It?
The best way to avoid image         burn-in is to limit the amount of static content on the display.  Image         sticking may be avoided by turning the display off periodically  for a         period of time between 24 to 48 hours.
To reduce the possibility of image         retention, we recommend:
Displaying alternating black/white images for           48 to 72 hours (our Technical Support Team can provide the  software)
Power down the unit for a period of time (minimum 24 to 48  hours)
Use           a screen saver when the touchmonitor is not in use
Image retention caused         by static (non-moving) images displayed for lengthy periods  (image burn-in)         is not covered under Elo warranty.

    yes
However, if your Mac has only Firewire 800 ports, you need an adapter such as one of the following to connect your FW400 external iSight:
    • This Firewire 400-800 cable can work:  http://store.apple.com/us/product/H7041ZM/A (I use this one.)
    • Some report that this low-priced alternative cable works:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189097
    • To use your iSight's FW400 6pin-6pin cable, you can use a 6pin-9pin adapter like one of these:

  • Avchd camcorder & non Intel iMac G5

I need to buy an new camcorder this weekend and I am looking at getting a tapeless high-definition camcorder. When I looked at the list of Mac compatible camcorders, there was a notation about needing an Intel-based Core Duo processor or better to use the AVCHD format on the camcorder. I currently have an iMac G5, but it doesn't have the Intel-based processor. I am looking to buy a new MacBook Pro in the near future (1-2 months), but not quite yet. Can the high-definition camcorders be used without the AVCHD format? My current camcorder uses the miniDV tapes, so I am clueless on all of this.

AVCHD really does need an Intel Mac to import into iMovie.
There is a workaround. You can buy a third party app called Voltaic HD. It will convert the AVCHD files to Apple Intermediate Codec so you can edit on a G5. It is quite a bit slower than importing directly into iMovie because it is a software solution and does not take advantage of hardware assists that are available in the intel chips and the associated graphics cards. Once you get the MBP, all will be well.

  • Can I Multi-Process with an Older, Non-Intel Mac?

...when I am on a new Intel Mac with AE CS4?

I don't understand the question. Can you use computer A while you're using computer B? Are you talking about network rendering? If so, then consider that both computers must be able to run After Effects and open the project that you're working with. Because After Effects CS4 only runs on processors with the Intel architecture (not PowerPC chips), the "non-Intel" Mac is a non-starter.

  • New Intel chips

    Hi
I want to upgrade my 12" Powerbook to a MBP. However I keep hearing comments (rumours) about the new Intel chips. Can someone please explain:
    1. What the chip is?
    2. What difference will it make to the current MBP confguration?
    3. When is it likely to appear?
    4. Should I buy now or really wait for the new chips?
    Thanks.

However I keep hearing comments (rumors) about the new
Intel chips. Can someone please explain:
I'm assuming you know that MBPs already use Intel chips and that you are referring to the Merom. Speculation is good in preparing us for what is to come, but there has been no official word on anything. In fact, there has been no unofficial word either. The fact, however, is that and a couple of Windows based laptop manufacturers have already announced the use of the Merom in their premier laptop computers. Apple is usually the leader of the pack, and unless they plan on taking a completely different route and surprising us once again, they should not be very far behind. Some speculate end of September.
    1. What the chip is?
As far as I know it is the Intel Core 2 Duo (Merom). In brief, it's just better and faster. I'm sure someone else can give the specifics.
    2. What difference will it make to the current MBP configuration?
Since there is no official or unofficial word on this, there is no way we can speculate as tot he MBP's setup.
    3. When is it likely to appear?
Speculation lends to late September, but nothing official or unofficial.
    4. Should I buy now or really wait for the new chips?
If it is not business-critical, I would absolutely wait.
