FCP: Motion Distort Aspect Ratio -33.33?

Good morning,
I recently exported two different sequences from FCP. Both films were exported using ‘QuickTime Movie’ and ‘Current Settings’.
One of the films came out letter-boxed and the other did not.
In investigating this I found the only difference in the settings of two films seems to be that under the 'Distort' field in 'Motion' tab of the FCP Viewer, the Aspect Ratio for the letter-boxed video was set at '-33.33' while for the full-screen the Aspect Ratio was set for '0'. When I changed the -33.33 to 0 I got the full-screen, non-letter-boxed image I wanted.
Both films are also played with QuickTime player using ‘Conform Aperture to: Clean’ under the ‘Presentation’ tab of [Command]-J.
Why was the Aspect Ratio for these clips set at -33.33? Since I didn't set this, it must have been an automatic setting.
I'm sure I'm missing something here.
Cheers,
BurntMonkey

Studio X,
Thanks again. 'Squeeze Mode' is the DVX100B's solution to fitting a 16:9 aspect on a 4:3 chip. If I understand correctly when in the mode the DVX basically animorphically squeezes the footage onto the chip. Then when it is handled in post the footage is 'stretched' and you are left with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
Yes, when I first drag a clip to the timeline, I do get the message about the sequence settings not matching and do I want to change them to match the current clip. Is this when the Aspect Ratio is set to -33.33?
My question is still 'Why?' When I reset the aspect ration back to '0' I get the full-screen, 16:9 image that I was hoping for in the first place. But I'm wondering when this will come back to haunt me. I have burned a DVD using the exported sequence so everything seems to be OK.
Thanks for your help in understanding this.
Cheers,
John

  • FCP export to "QuickTime Movie" distorts aspect ratio of all text, displays video correctly.

    Hi you all,
    My name is Alexander, I'm from Belgium.
    I'm working on Final Cut Pro 6.0.6, on a MacBook Pro with a 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, running version 10.7.2 of Mac OS X (Lion).
    I'm editing a 'making of' of a Flemish feature film. I shot this 35 minute documentary short with my own Canon HDV-camcorder (XH-A1). The Final Cut Pro-project is stored on an external hard drive (1 TB LaCie Minimus).
    I've been doing exports to "QuickTime Movie" for years now, without any problems, but since a week or two, FCP started messing up the titles over the video - and the titles only. Their aspect ratio is messed up once exported, but they look just fine in the FCP Timeline (in Viewer, I can verify that the aspect ratio of the titles is always "0"). I'm trying to export this to "HDV - 720p25".
    Here's a comparison between the two:
    As you can see: the MOV has the titles' aspect ratio all weird, the upper one partly covering the lower one. All titles and text in the docu come out like this, but the video (and audio) is exported correctly.
    Any ideas on how to solve this very annoying problem?
    Many thanks!!
    Alexander

    Hi Studio X,
    Thank you for your quick reply.
    The producers of the film want to upload this making of-documentary on YouTube. Therefore, I need to give them a high-quality-mov with the least possible Megabites. My film has a 35 minute running time.
    So I figured: Let's start with the 'smallest' high-quality FCP-export to begin with (HDV-720p25), and throw that one in Compressor, in order to end up with a 'small' but good looking H.264-MOV for YouTube.
    But for some reason, those "HDV-720p25"-exports mess up the titles. And I can't figure out why.

  • Motion project aspect ratios.

    The Problem:
    When opening a motion project in FCP, the aspect ratio is completely changed and never looks right even when both settings are exactly the same.
    The Details:
    Motion Ratio= Project: NTSC Broadcast SD 720 X 486 29.97fps NTSC D1/DV Anamorphic
    Final Cut= NTSC DV (3:2) 720 X 480 anamorphic 29.97fps
    PLEASE HELP!

    Well one problem I see is that you are using different setting for Motion (720x486 anamorphic) and FCP (DV 720x480 anamorphic). That will cause you other, ugly problems so you should make them identical.
    When you say it didn't work, did you change the browser clip or the timeline clip? And you added the checkmark? That should do it.

  • FCP 5 Canvas aspect ratio 1 percent hire than Viewer

    Hi, I'm somewhat new to fcp and can't figure out this problem. Here it is:
    The aspect ratio (if that's what you call it) in the viewer is at 86% and in the canvas it is at 87%. Both are set to "fit to window". How can I match these up or is it normal?
    More Info:
    Editing NTSC quicktime files. Sequence Settings are:
    Frame Size: 720x480 NTSC DV (3.2)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC - CCIR 601 / DV (3.2)
    Field Dominance: Lower (even)
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    Quicktime video settings:
    Compressor: DV/ DVCPRO - NTSC
    Quality: 100%
    Macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Final Cut Pro 5
    Macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    To match them exactly, if you insist on using "Fit to Window", is to get the Viewer and Canvas Windows exactly the same size.
    I wouldn't bother, just use 50% for both. Your realtime performance will be better, too, if you do.
    BTW: Do you really want to be editing NTSC footage in UK?!
    Also: it's not "aspect ratio", it's "window magnification". Aspect ratio is the ratio between the width and height of the picture, typically 4:3 or 16:9.

  • FCP 7 Sequence Aspect Ratio Issue

    I apologize in advance if I'm using to incorrect terminology.
    I've upgraded to FCP 7 and my questions concerns aspect ratio. I've just finished two sequences which are ready for export. When I first started capturing video from my Sony DCR-HC-30. I did notice a warning that came up, something to do with a conflict between the imported video and FCP settings - I selected to have FCP modify the preset to match and imported the video.
    My sequence summary is: 720 X 480 frame size, 29.97 fps, pixel aspect ration is NTSC-CCIR601/DV. Under my Sequence setting menu, the sequence is identified as NTSC 720 X 480 NTSC DV (3:2).
    My "easy setup" shows the Seq. and Capture preset as DV NTSC 48Khz and the device control as DVCPRO HD Firewire.
    All I want is a standard NTSC format to view on a standard NTSC TV, shouldn't the aspect ratio be 4:3?
    Thank You

    Mr. Holmes,
    Thanks for your prompt reply - the information was most valuable. I've been playing around with FCP and Express since version 1 (strictly amateur home stuff, and I can't remember seeing the 3:2 ratio displayed before - probably not paying attention. Good, I'll started the finishing touches and export.
    The final product will be going to DVDS Pro, would you recommend using Compressor or Quicktime Conversion? I've always used Compressor in the past, but just read something about (perhaps) just using QT Conversion. If I could bother you with one more question - under the Easy Setup option, sub option "use" shouldn't my setting reflect/show DV-NTSC? Right now it's showing "custom setup."
    Thanks again for your response, very much appreciated. Regards.

  • Slightly distorted aspect-ratio (and missing alpha channel) when copy/paste from Photoshop

    Maybe this is an old topic (but I didn't find anything on google or this forum):
    When I copy images from Photoshop to Flash, the aspect ratio of the bitmap gets distorted. A 728x90 Bitmap becomes 727.6x90 (and so on...). The dpi is set on exactly 72 on both programs. Is there any way to JUST get a 1:1 pixel copy? (except using another program like Irfanview as a "man-in-the-middle")
    Although I selected "32 bit color w/alpha" in the clipboard settings of Flash, the alpha channel seems to get discarded when copying from Photoshop. Shouldn't it at least work with Photoshop? I mean, it's an Adobe product after all and maybe the most commonly used together with Flash.
    Would just be nice if a copy-paste between PS and FL was an easier thing.
    I know there can also be a pixel-aspect somewhere (like used for video productions and wide-screen), but I didn't find settings for that anywhere.
    I still use Flash Professional CS5.0

    I'm on windows7 with CS5.5 and transparency and size are copied over just fine. You answered what would be my first question, 72dpi. How about the image mode. Are you using RGB 8bit?
    I've had lots of issues with the OS not handling transparency very well also, such right-click on an image on a website that you know is a PNG and has transparency, then paste it into photoshop, the transparency isn't saved.
    The route that always works (but is a PITA) is of course to save it as a PNG with transparency and just import it.

  • "Movie to ipod (320x240)" qtime codec distorts aspect ratio!

    a minor complaint, but a valid one...
    the only quicktime codec that seems to be compatible for the new video ipod (movie to ipod 320x240) squeezes the video files so that they are ever so slightly taller than it should be.
    also, they take an ice age to covert!
    anybody found any solutions to this?
    thanks
    ross

    If the distortion really bothers you and you, simply open the file in QTime, reset the height of the display to correct number of pixels to restore correct aspect ration, and save the file as a "self-contained" movie. Extension will change to ".MOV" but format will remain correct. Have not tested it, but believe the "widescreen" setting you mention was included for individuals who convert their Video Camcorder in "widescreen" mode. Manually restoring the aspect ratio is more exact where original source file used a non-standard aspect ratio.

  • Distorted aspect ratio of exported WMV clip

    This is truly bizarre. If I output from the timeline using Quicktime Conversion to a WMV file, the aspect ratio is wider than when I output to a Quicktime format. This also happens when I export to the AVI file type.
    Any clues?

    ****! That didn't help. I just tried every combination of pixel dimensions and frame size I could and nothing helps. No matter what, the clips are still exporting as too wide.
    I think I'll be exporting as 640x480 after all. I can't figure a way around this.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Distorted Aspect Ratio of Exported Frames

    My project's aspect ratio is 16:9 (720 horizontal, 576 vertical).
    I inserted a clip into the timeline.
    I exported a certain frame to a file as an image.
    The image file's size: 720 x 576.
    I proceeded to import the image file into the project, and inserted it into the timeline.
    The image's aspect ratio is not the same as the original footage.
    Specifically, the horizontal side is narrower than originally (see attached screenshots).
    What causes this discrepancy?
    More importantly, what can i do to get exported frames to match the aspect ratio of the project?

    OK, I've got the BMP. When I looked at your images, I thought that we were seeing your still image on the Timeline. We are not. That shape/size is what was produced.
    Now, remember that I am on PrE 4, so things will be different in PrE 8. Still, I should be able to get you close. In PrE 4, one uses File>Export>Frame to do a Frame capture under the CTI (Current Time Indicator), and visible in the Program Monitor. When you choose this, you will get the standard Windows dialog screen, where you name and locate your still image. There is also a settings button, that will open up a second dialog box, for you to adjust many attributes of your Frame capture. There, you will have three choices in the left-hand Pane: General, Video and Keyframe and Rendering. First, go to General, and you'll get File Type w/ a dropdown. There, you can choose the format type and should have JPEG, TIFF, BMP, TARGA and GIF (maybe more in PrE 8, like PNG?). I'd stick with TIFF or BMP. About the only other choice is whether you want to add this captured still in your Project, or not. That is your choice.
    Go to the Video listing in that left-hand Pane. There you can choose the Frame Size, the PAR and the Color Depth. Make sure that these match your Project's and your source footage's exact specs. Unless you need the Alpha Channel, and are using either TIFF or TARGA, leave Color Depth to Millions of colors. Otherwise, choose Millions +, where the + is that Alpha Channel.
    I'd guess that it's in those settings, as to what is happening with your Frame capture. Let me know if you get this sorted, and sorry for my mis-step, but I was not clear on what I was seeing, and where I was seeing it.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • OSMF ScaleMode.ZOOM is distorting aspect ratio

    So, I have a video of dimensions 216x360.
    My display area (and hence the dimensions of my swf) is 562x395.
    Now, I want this video to be zoomed such that 1.) aspect ratio is maintained, 2.) there are no black bars on any side. and 3.) the video is cropped from top and bottom.
    To achieve this, my code looks like this:
          var sprite = new MediaPlayerSprite();
          var vid:VideoElement = new VideoElement(new URLResource(videoResource));
          var layout:LayoutMetadata = new LayoutMetadata();
          layout.width = 526;
          layout.height = 395;
          layout.scaleMode = ScaleMode.ZOOM;
          vid.addMetadata(LayoutMetadata.LAYOUT_NAMESPACE, layout);
          _playerSprite.width = 526;
          _playerSprite.height = 395;
          _playerSprite.media = vid;
          addChild(playerSprite);
    Now, when I play the video, the aspect ratio is destroyed, there are no black bars and the whole video is fit in the display area without any cropping!!!
    What am I doing wrong here?

    I have the exact same problem!
    I have an LG television and only one STB, so I initially thought that I might have accidentally changed my aspect ratio setting (until I realized there wasn't a single button to accidentally press to do that!).
    My DVD plays fine through my TV, so the TV isn't totally broken.
    I called Verizon and they couldn't do anything, they suggested trying the box to another TV and everything worked!
    Next I plugged by STB to the original TV and the problem resumed.
    Then I skipped by BOSE surround sound tuner and plugged my HDMI cable straight from the STB to the TV and the resolution is fine.
    What I don't get is that my DVD plays fine through the BOSE tuner.
    I'll try switching cables, but I don't know how a cable can just go bad spontaneously.
    Let me know if anyone finds a fix in the mean time.
    Thanks!

  • Clips gets distorted (aspect ratio gets changed) when I move them

    I am trying to move some clip froms one iMovie project to another. I have copied a bunch of other clips and have had no problems but for some reason I am having a problem with a certain set of clips. When I copy these clips to the other project they are coming out stretched out, as if iMovie is tweaking the aspect ratio.
    Any idea what is going on here? I couldn't find anything in Preferences to address this problem.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    When you create a new project you get a window asking you what you want to to call it and where you want to save it.
    At the bottom of that window is a small arrow pointing to the words Video Format. Click on that small arrow and you get a drop down menu offering you DV, DV Widescreen, and a few others incl. iSight.
    You only get the opportunity to select the video format when you first create, and name, a new project.

  • Getting distorted aspect ratio when Importing my TIFF picture files

    Trying to import some Powerpoint slides in order to intercut between the slides and the speaker. When brought to the browser or timeline, these TIFF files, which looked fine on the cd, have taken on a widescreen 1.88:1 look. Under the motion tab in the browser they also show up as being distorted, and scaled down to 75%. I can manually reset these attributes one at a time, but what a huge pain. Are there some settings I can play with to preserve the original attributes of the TIFF pictures?
    Thanks,
    John Freeman

    I'd guess th TIFFs are larger than 720 X 480. If you don't need to move them around in Final Cut, you might take them into Photoshop and do the resizing there. In Photoshop, can can program an Action to make this quicker and easier.
    What is the frame size of these TIFFs?

  • FCP 7 Sequence Aspect Ratio Conflict Question

    Hello,
    I am working on a project that is DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, 29.97 fps, 720 x 480, Pixel aspect is NTSC-CCIR 601. I am trying to do two things with my project, one is to create a DVD for one to watch on the TV. The second is I am trying to create videos that I want to upload to youtube. I am having some issues with exporting for youtube which I am doing from FCP 7 and tried using compressor as well. The issue is that I am left with black bars on both sides of the video when I upload it at 720 x 480. When I add the tag yt:stretch=16:9 the bars go away but it looks like the top of my video is cut off as the persons head in the video shows from the nose down.
    Someone suggested that I should export it as 720x404 Squared pixels, and
    de-interlace it as well, in order for me to get rid of those black bars on both sides of the video that I am using on youtube.
    I tried this and uploaded the 720 x 404 video to youtube, and there were no more black bars but now it seems stretched. For example there is a person in the video dancing, so in the new 720 x 404 video he looks fatter. It is like those carnival mirrors that make you look short and fat is the best way I can describe it.
    Is there a way to have the video on youtube without black bars look the same as the video (720 x 480) with the black bars on the side? I am trying to upload a video on youtube that has no black bars and that is not stretched.
    I really appreciate any help I can get!
    Thank you,
    Brad

    Or you could scale up the video so it fills a 16:9 canvas, cropping the top and bottom, though this is not a very good solution for your image. You need to start shooting 16:9 if your delivery goal is going to be YouTube or pretty much anything these days.

  • Text and aspect ratio for creating it in Photoshop

    Hi there,
    I am doing something that will be displayed via a laptop. I am making titles and text blocks in photoshop, because the text feature in FCE looks quite bad with scrolling or animated texts. I am confused about the aspect ratio. For something that is going to be played on a laptop>projector, would i create the text in 720x480 OR 740x540. Thanks for your help, i really appreciate it.
    Karen

    Karen,
    If you will be viewing on a TV or burning a DVD, you need to account for the rectangular pixels of that output. If you will be using Quicktime to view the movie to a projector, you will need use a different aspect ratio.
    So: TV/DVD
    Create image at 720x540
    Add text
    Image Size, unclick Constrain, size to 720x480
    Add to FCE. Go to Motion:Distort:Aspect Ratio:0
    Quicktime:
    Create image at 720x480
    Add to FCE - Image will look sqeezed, but will be fine in QT.
    Personally I would use the text creators in FCE. Remember, text will look BAD until it is rendered and output. Preview on Canvas is not good.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mixing Aspect Ratios

    I have been using IMovie for a couple of years and decided to make the jump to FCE. I am currently in the process of putting together a training video and am having difficulty mixing some of the 4:3 ratios with the new 16:9 clips. I have a basic understanding of Anamorphic settings(at least I think I do) and have gone out and bought Tom's FCE 4 editing workshop book. While it has helped out a lot with understanding the concepts of FCE 4, I still can't figure out a solution.
    Forgive me because I am not very knowledgeable in a lot of the movie production terminology or concepts but I am trying to learn. This is what I am doing. I have shot a lot of new footage on my cannon using 16:9 aspect ratio. This is HD and looks great. I made a training video in the past, burned it to DVD, and am now trying to use some of that footage from the old DVD that was made in 4:3 ratio. I have ripped it down as a .mov and stored it on my external hd.
    If I wanted to make the video using Imovie, the process is very simple. I choose 16:9 under project properties and the 4:3 footage is automatically altered in such a way that it looks pretty good and mixes well with the 16:9 hd footage.
    I have tried doing the same with FCE 4 using easy setup and while there are so many settings to choose from, I was wondering if there is setting that does what Imovie does so easily? I know I can change the aspect ratio under the motion-distort-aspect ratio but it doesn't look nearly as good as it does on the imovie program. I also know I can directly change the size of the clip in the canvas but even that doesn't look as good as Imovie's conversion.
    I really want to use FCE because I can see it as offering so many more options but this is something pretty important that I need to be able to do. So basic recap...I want to easily be able to convert 4:3 aspect ratio footage to mix in with 16:9 and export it all to a 16:9 dvd.
    Any help would be appreciated

    Thanks Tom,
    Unfortunately it seems like IMovie produces the best results with minimal effort for what I need right now. Too bad since I spent the money for FCE. Great book you put out though. While I have you, I was reading what you were saying about using multiple monitors. I am using a year old 24" imac that I maxed out the processor and memory abilities when I bought it. It runs FCE pretty well. I have another monitor(Sony) that I would like to set up so I could have it designated for everything rendered. Do you know how or even if this is something I would be able to do? Or is multiple monitors something that can only be done on a Mac Pro?
