FCP on 5400 scratch disk?

I'm considering getting into FCP, mainly for better handling of HDV (.m2t) files as iMovie and FCE will not import these directly, but force you to convert. I am strictly an amateur and do not anticipate doing anything heavy duty. But, I'm wondering if I will have to upgrade me external hard drive (5400 Lacie Rugged FW400/800) as well? If I use a 5400 instead of 7200 will it still work? Obviously the 7200 will work better, but will the 5400 still be functional? Or am I likely to run into problems that would be show stoppers?

I don't know. This is just a hobby for me, so it's starting to get a little pricy. I'm trying to decide if it makes sense to spend the money to upgrade or not. Most of the program is probably more than I need, but there is no good way to capture .m2t and convert it to something editable without FCP. Why are the 5400 drives such a problem? I am working with AIC in iMovie on my system hard drive (5400) now which has not given me problems. (Sorry for the dumb questions, like I said, I'm strictly an amateur, and new to it at that.)

Fcp vs 4 scratch disk to 2nd internal hd

I've designated an added 400 gig internal hd as my scratch disk/render location but final cut is bloating this hd at initial capture with hidden bloated files and after capturing 2 short (50 min each) dv tapes the storage is almost totally consumed. i've verified the disk and everything is normal and the data is not corrupt because i've successfully captured to my origianl 160 gig hd without problems...

don't use capture now.
if you really insist on it, set capture limit to no more than the length of a tape - 60 minutes.
Without a 'capture now' limit, FCP will allocate the entire disk for capture since it does not know how much of the disk you REALLY intend to use.

What type of ext disk to use as scratch disk ?

I've been searching this part of the discussions all day to find out what type (USB2.0/FW400/FW800) of external disk to use for FCP as a scratch disk. No luck yet. I've also checked the docs on this, but I couldn't find anything.
Did a Google search. Found all sorts of different setups people are using. No consistency.
I need some help on this.

So I was drawing on Photoshop CC, and then, suddenly, a message pops up, saying that my ´scratch disk´ is full..?

I don't know where FCP creates the scratch disk. You will probably need to use FCP to manage it. Check the documentation for FCP or use FCP Help from its Help menu. Otherwise post the question in the FCP forum.
Of course the genius you talked to may not have had a clue what he was talking about. Many don't.

When I try to use the internal hard drive as a scratch disk I get this error "unable to set scratch disk- the selected directory is on write protect or non-writable media. Any ideas on how to fix this. It only happens in fcp.

By internal, I assume you're referring to your systems (boot) drive. Is it, by chance, a partitioned dive?
Also…although many people successfully use their systems drives as scratch disks, over time you'll have better results using a dedicated drive for your media.

How to Get XDCAM Transfer files into FCP scratch disk locations

Hi
I'm new to XDCAM transfer. I have XDCAM Browser and Transfer, latest versions. I have successfully imported into FCP, but I was surprised to see the footage stored in a default 'Movies' location. I thought, okay, I'll just change the import location in the XDCAM Transfer preferences to the FCP scratch disk location but then I realized that since I have multiple scratch disk locations I would be defeating the way FCP works, which is to to automatically go to the location with the room for the files.
I didn't have this problem with Panasonic P2.
Is there a way to import XDCAM files into FCP and have it go to the scratch disk locations already established in FCP?

Hi Phil
Although XDCAM Transfer can be launched from within FCP (using the File > Import > Sony XDCAM.. command) the app itself is standalone and works outside of the control of FCP. It has no means of discovering and using the Capture Scratch location defined within FCP (because Apple do not provide any means for a third party app to do so).
The Panasonic P2 format is (can be) transfered directly using FCP's own Log and Transfer interface and so works wholly within FCP hence the target directory for imports honors the defined Capture Scratch location.
If you are working with the XDCAM EX series of camera's then you can use Sony's FCP Log and Transfer plugin (PDZK - LT1) instead of XDCAM Transfer to import your clips, and so achieve the functionality you are looking for. Although you lose some of the flexibility/functionality of the standalone XDCAM Transfer app (PDZK-P1) the benefit of handling everything directly with FCP's own interface might be preferable for you.

Weirdly, though, if I now try and select any of the Events now located in my other hard drive, they do show up in the Film Strip area (to the right of the Event Library), but none of these Events show up in the Time Line window (lower section). The only one that continues to show up in the Time Line window are the Events still located in the startup drive.
Is there a way to get those Events now in the other HD to show up in the Time Line window?

Scratch Disks etc in FCP 7

Please can someone give me a simple answer to this question (last time I asked it, people answering got into an argument)
Despite using FCP 7 very successfully so far, I'm still not quite sure that I have it set up to optimise stabilty and speed.
Can some one tell me in simple english what disks should be used for what.
Here's my set up at the moment:
Internal Drive Runs Program
Firewire 800 External Drive is Scratch disk
Other External Drives contain Pro Res Files for importing into projects.

Keep them on the system drive, but back them up nightly to the scratch drive, or thumb drive. If you lost your scratch drive, and the project was on there, and nowhere else...that'd be pure DOOM! Because then your media and project file would be gone, and you'd have to start all over. If you only lose the media, you still have the project with the cut...re-ingest the media and your cut will relink and work is saved!
But if your system drive dies and your project is only on that drive, you are hosed again. Because you have your media, but your editing and organization is all gone.
Back up the project file.

How do I work around incorrect capture scratch disk use estimates in FCP?

I am trying to find a work around solution for FCP incorrectly estimating the space required on my capture scratch disk. I am using a Panasonic AJHD1400 to play back some DVCAM footage. I want to capture it 720x480 Anamorphic H264, via the firewire output on the deck. I am able to "free" capture the clip by hitting play on the deck and crash recording ("capture now") on the log and capture tool. From this process, I know the final captured file will be somewhere in the 3GB range, give or take. The clip is a little less than an hour long. I have 343 GB available on my scratch drive according to the information in the "Capture Settings" tab of the log and capture tool but according to the same info FCP thinks only 36.9 minutes of footage will fit on the disk. Consequently I can't log and capture the clip properly due to "insufficient disk space". What gives?
Any suggestions and responses will be appreciated.

It isn't an Easy Setup per se. I modified the "generic capture" template in the capture preset editor to use DV video from the AJHD1400 as the "Digitizer" and set the "Compressor" to be h.264 at 100% quality.
The whole point of the strange capture is for our sound editorial staff to edit to in pro tools. We don't have networked video storage for our audio department. If i capture in DV, the files are still like 20GB. using my "custom" settings I get a reasonably sized file that looks decent enough for the editors in a file that is small enough to fit on a data dvd if need be. I save rendering time as well.

Hi, I'm new to mac and fcp... it's a bit too much new stuff to grasp.. but I'm trying. could someone tell me why do I need to set scratch disk for? Also what other crucial things, if any, should I be looking at before I can start editing?

There are far too many to list here - but you should make sure your Scratch Disk is NOT your System Disk - otherwise your system will slow down (and you need everything to run efficiently for video editing as it eats power, memory and drive space)
As Shane said, do the tutorials and read as much as you can.
If you have a problem, search this Discussion Group before you post something elementary.

Setting pref file so FCP prompts Scratch Disk Reset

I was told by a fellow poster that "you can lock the pref file (or set permisions) so that FCP can't save the selected Scratch Disk location ... this will force FCP to ask you to set the Scratch Disk location everytime it launches."
Does anyone know how to do this?
Please take me through step-by-step.

if a fellow poster told you then why don't you do a search mate?
basically, you can either just lock the file just by locking it in the finder (use Get Info) or you can set the privilledges so that the file is read only.

Different Scratch Disk Per FCP Project

I love FCP Studio and swear by it for most things. I'll cut straight to the point...
I want to be able to set my scratch disk location (capture scratch, render files, audio render files) as a project based setting NOT a system wide setting, and I want FCP to remember this setting for each project.
I am very frustrated with the fact that you can't set the scratch disk to different locations per project, as I am constantly changing the location depending on what I am working on, and sometimes I forget and I'm working off the wrong drive.
Also, sometimes I'm multi-tasking and working on two or more projects for different clients off of different mobile drives. This becomes a big cluster f$!k when I'm forced to render and digitize everything to one drive yet I'm working off of several removable drives that I need to take with me at some point. I need elements for each project to stay on their own drive!
Now, I understand that my need goes outside the real of the normal editor, and may actually cause a larger fundamental back-end issue that I am not aware of, but is it asking too much to have the scratch disk setting a project based setting, and not a system setting?
It seems to me that FCP could just remember where you want to point your files to depending on what project you are working in?
Any ideas? Am I missing an obvious solution? Any 3rd party software out there to help with this?

But it should be a PROJECT setting not a System wide preference.

Raid card and scratch disk setup for FCP

Hi Guys
Can anybody tell me what is the correct way to set up a raid card and scratch disk for FCP if you have 3 x 2TB internal hard drives, with the OS on HD1 and drives 2 and 3 dedicated for FCP
Also with this i also have all my documents i.e work stuff, invoices, pictures, music ect from my old windows PC and used to have them stored on HD2 with the Windows 7 OS on HD1 - i have been told that it is fine if i put this on the same drives as FCP is this correct...?
i only ask this as i have been told how to do it in different ways by 3 people......

Thanks John, although i'm rather embarrassed to admit that I am a complete newbie when it comes to technical/computer hardware terms (i.e. I have no idea about different types of disks, other than a HDD and a SSD, or even what the difference is between your media cache and a scratch disk).
This means that after reading all the links you so helpfully provided hasn't done much other than making me feel even more stupid!
The best that I can conclude from what I think that i've understood is that I will use:
Intel 530 Series 120GB SSD for O/S, Programs (and Pagefile?? No idea what this is, sorry)
Samsung 840BW 500GB - Scratch Disk (is this the media cache?) and preview
Seagate Barracuda 3TB HDD - media, projects, and exports

IPod as FCP scratch disk?

I would like to use my 5G iPod as a scratch disk for DV viddeo with Final Cut Pro, but I've read that it could damage the iPod. Is it inadvisable, or should I be fine doing this?

I would advise against this.
The hard drive in the iPod was not designed to take this type of "beating". Using the iPod as a scratch disk would cause the iPods hard drive to be accessed a lot, which generates heat, which kills your battery and could shorten the overall life of your iPod.
Don't take the risk.
Invest in a Firewire external hard drive instead.
EDIT: Even if you did end up using the iPod as a scratch disk... I doubt it would perform very well, for a few reasons. Slow HD in the iPod, and slow connectivity method (USB).

You don't want to use your internal for media. The system drive has enough work, just running the OS and FCP, without trying to read/write video media...particularly PRORES.
I've not worked with it, but understand it to be pretty hefty and generally requires a hefty RAID to function well.
Partitioning just makes the drive head have to jump around even more than when using a non partitioned drive.
7200 drives will be better as your external(s).
