FCP On MBP (128mb v-ram)

Hi guys,
I'm possibly purchasing the low-end MBP, the one with 128mb in v-ram.
Will I be able to run Final Cut Pro (with hd video), Motion and Adobe After Effects succesfully?
with regards
biggip

if you are working in hd video i would go with the higher end mbp. if you are just working with standard def then you should be fine. i used to even do a lot of video editing on an old 12" ibook with 64Mb of vram...right now i have one of the early mbp's with 256Mb vram and it flies while running final cut pro. i don't do any hd work as of yet though.

Trying to decide if the approx $500 difference between models is really worth it for the ram. I know there's a little more hd space and a tick faster cpu speed but I'm mainly concerned with the ram question.
    Thanks to all,
    Larry

You get 25% more hard drive, 8% faster CPU, double the VRAM for $500 if you are comparing stock systems only. However if you are building to order the price difference will be much less than $500 the way the BTO options price out. And, you should want 2 GB of RAM. To achieve that with the cheaper MBP you either need to throw away the 512 and buy two DIMMs instead of just one or pay Apple $500 instead of the $300 if you had bought the better MBP.
For a MBP with 120 GB hard drive, 2 GB RAM BTO cost is:
2.0 GHz MBP with 128 MB VRAM, $2699
2.16 GHz MBP with 256 MB VRAM, $2899
$200 difference, not $500. Of course buying third party RAM will change it some. Either way I think max HD size and max RAM is important and at less than $300 actual difference I consider the faster box a smarter purchase. Best value of all is the 17" MBP with its 8x DVD and FW800.
Note that Apple and graphics apps clearly are sharing more processing with the GPU as time goes on. IMO it behooves us to get fastest available (at reasonable price) GPUs for the future, not because of any perceived performance difference today.
This thread mirrors comments I made a year+ ago. Look what happened to folks who bought G5s and saved a few bucks because at the time better GPUs BTO mostly affected only video/3D. Then Surprise! Aperture came along and knocked multiprocessor G5s without upgraded cards to their knees. Further surprise, Apple - IMO incredibly and unethically - refused to facilitate card upgrade purchases to folks who had purchased Apple's best Macs, now lamed by an Apple app.
Personally when I buy it is always with fastest available (at reasonable price) GPUs; just trying to get max graphics performance which historically has always been challenging to hardware setups.
IMO it is essential to buy for the future, not for today. Today will be over before a new box is even delivered...

  • Problems with my old iMac 500MHz with 128MB of RAM

    Ok guys...
Lucky for me I have a brand new intel pro duo iMac.. but I still have the urge to fix (or at least try to fix) my old mac.
Its an iMac 500MHz with 128MB of RAM running OSX 10.2.8 and its giving me tons of problems...
But theres one problem thats bugging me the most! For whatever reason I can't click and drag files! You'd think it would be the mouse... but the thing is that it registers a hold down click cause I can make a highlight box on the desktop, highlight text, ect.
Is there some known "you can drag files" problem with OSX? It doesnt sound like that big of a deal.. but it ***** when I cant drag files in or out of the trash... put apps in the application folder... ect.
    Can anyone help me?

    Hello Vaseline,
Welcome to the discussions area. My first thought is that with your ram at 128 you are just about at minimum.. I would definately up the ram.
Secondly....look at this link and see the advice given by others. Go to the advice of dale which will lead to Dr Smokes link and follow his instructions
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1481217&#1481217
This may not be an exact solution but will help you get started....Good Luck with this problem and the new Mac.................Jim

  • MBP C2D Video Ram?

The big differene between the 2.16Ghz and 2.33Ghz is the 128mb vs 256mb Video Ram. Does anyone have any details/ideas on if you can increase the Video Ram post purchase?

I purchased a week 46 MBP C2D just the other day - it's the 2.16 model with 128mb of vram. I was worried about the vram issue and called the Apple store - one person told me it was soldered - - another person said it was upgradeable - I am pretty sure it is soldered to the board and not upgradeable after looking at ifixit.com's guide they state it after they get the motherboard out of the new Macbook Pros.
I am wondering if I will miss the 256 of vram - but my games still seem to run fine so far... (only Unreal Tournament '04 & Second Life)

  • MBP 2010 8gb ram Crashing on boot

I have tried to upgrade my 2010 13" MBP with the 8gb 1333 DDR3 corsair. I did this once already with my 2009 15" MBP and worked just fine without any problems. I have read many success stories for upgrading a 2010 13" with the exact same ram and it's begining to frustrate me because i can't figure out if it's hardware or software with the computer. I did try the new ram in 15" just to make sure the ram wasn't bad and it booted just fine. Back to the 13" it will either simply crash on boot and have a error messae wich i can try to add a link to later but i did get this crash report (see below) after i put in the old 2gb sticks running at 1033. But it will either simply crash or i will get the grey apple logo and the spinner will start spinning for about 10 seconds than freeze. I let it sit for about 10-20 minutes multiple times to see if it just needed to think but it didn't progress pass that. i've also tried just using one of the single sticks instead of having both in and that didn't help either. tried reseting pram and enter safe mode but both attempts ended in it crashing the same way. I also tried using a different harddrive from another 13 macbook that had Snow lion on it thinking that something rooted on the 13" MBP operating system was causing it not to boot properly with the ram, that also didn't work. I am up for any suggestions. Thank you - D

I know that it says that it likes 1033 but..... when i had read around to upgrad my 15" people said it would work and would just clock the ram speed down from 1333 to 1033. I installed it and to a shocking suprise it didn't even clock it down to 1033. My frustration is that this 13" MBP is a year newer and isn't even wanting to boot with the ram. I would assume, and be glad with it booting and just clocking the RAM down. i wouldn't see why that wouldn't be a problem. Thank you though for youru suggestion.  Thanks - DJ

  • Has anyone received their C2D MBP with 3GB RAM?

For those that have ordered a 15" C2D MBP with 3GB of RAM:
    a) have you received their order yet, and if so, did it take a while to ship (mine's taking forever to ship);
    b) do you feel that the extra 1GB was worthwhile paying for in terms of performance under programs such as photoshop CS2 etc.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   667 MHz PPC

Yes, I received my 15-incher with 3gb of RAM and 160gb HD. I ordered about an hour after the store came back up with the updated specs on 10/24, it shipped late on 10/26, and I received it on 10/30.
I've not tried CS2 - I have that but currently run it on my Dell desktop. I'll be migrating my photography workflow over to the Mac next spring, when Adobe univeral binaries become available, at which time I'll replace the Dell with a Mac Pro.
I can say, having started working with the Aperture trial and Parallels running Windows XP (to which I have a gig of RAM dedicated when running the VM), that the extra memory seems to make a significant difference. I'm not at all sorry I bit the bullet for that extra gig - especially since Apple's price vis-a-vis that upgrade seems very reasonable relative to the aftermarket memory providers.
Good luck on receiving yours soon. This is a wonderful machine...

  • Snow Leopard and MBP 8GB of Ram?

We know already that the late 2008 2.4GHz MBP Unibody supports up to 6GB of ram. The 2.53 and 2.6 support 8GB.
The question is will this same MBP support 8GB of ram when Snow Leopard is released? Is it a hardware or 32-bit/64-bit addressing problem that limits the 2.4GHz MBP?

"Is it a hardware or 32-bit/64-bit addressing problem that limits the 2.4GHz MBP?"
Are you referring to the memory limitation? No.

  • I have 2012 iMac with 4 GB RAM. Every time I'm importing vedeo using MiniDV HDV Sony camera, FCP X is importing normally, with 2.5 GB of RAM free. Then, after 10 or 15 min of importing, FCP is frozen, and free RAM is close to zero. What happens?

I have 2012 iMac with 4 GB RAM. When I turn FCP X, I usually have 2.5 RAM free and the program works normally when I edit. The issue is importing video. I use a Sony HDV camera to import from miniDV tapes, and Apple says Sony HDVs are supported. Yet every time I'm importing, it works normally for 10-15 min, then the amount of free RAM quickly (yet gradually) is reduced to almost zero (I used Memory Clean to dicover it) and then FCP X got frozen and I need to force quit it and start all over again, to work for another 15 min. Horrible! What is it?

Are using 10.0.7 (the latest version)?
Memory problems seem to have been alleviated with 10.0.6 and 10.0.7.
Please post the screenshots of Activity Monitor, as Tom asked. This will at least let us see if it is FCP X itself gobbling a lot of RAM or if you are suffering from the problem of OS X not releasing "Inactive Memory" in a timely manner - an issue that has been there for a long time :-(
You didn't mention whether you have the 27" or 21.5" iMac. Unfortunately, in the 21.5" adding RAM is a big hassle. But if you have the 27", then seriously consider upping the RAM. It is quite inexpensive, from the likes of Crucial or other reputable third parties.

  • MBP 3 Beeps - RAM failure... already?!

    Hey all.
So this evening I was mixing a song on my MacBook Pro when suddenly the screen flashed/went beserk, and now when I try to turn it on I get three beeps, which repeat over time. My research indicates that means a RAM failure. But... I literally got this computer yesterday! Are MacBook Pro's really that finicky? This isn't my first MBP, and not my first experience with such issues...

Take it back to your local Apple Store. I'm assuming that you bought Apple provided RAM? You're right, the 3-beeps indicate bad RAM. I've never had a problem with Apple provided RAM or any RAM that I've installed myself, for that matter. You're well within your 14-day 'grace period' to have your MBP replaced and that's what I would insist upon. Don't let them just try to reseat the RAM or put in new sticks - get a completely new machine.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Upgrading MBP to 4GB RAM not working

I have a MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.5 17" (08) (EMC 2199) which accordingly can be upgrade to 4GB RAM. The memory type required for the model is PC2-5300 DDR2. So I went and bought two 2GB PC2-6400 DDR2 modules. When I installed both 2GB for a total of 4GB, the MBP won't boot or make a sound. If I install one of the original 1GB + new 2GB for a total of 3GB, the MBP boots. I have swapped the modules around from slot to another slot. I have tested both 2GB modules with one of the original 1GB module and it will boot. But when I put in both 2GB PC-6400 DDR2, the computer will not boot. Anyone have a suggestion on what I should do? Thank you.

Incorrect. If you do indeed have the Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo 17" from early 2008, the maximum RAM it can hold is 3GB. Read the second table on http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1270#link5 (the table titled "+Refer to this table for the maximum+...").

  • 2008 Penryn 2.5Ghz MBP and unmatched ram

    Hello all,
I just upgraded my MBP using OWC 6GB kit (4GB + 2GB dims) My system profiler sees the 6GB
so how do I know or what can I do to verify that say Aperture or Photoshop uses most of the ram?
For example I still have Photoshop CS4 but it tells me that it only see 3GB of ram in it's performance pane(within Photoshop preferences).
Is the 6GB being addressed by OSX and the 2.5Ghz Core 2 Duo ?
    Thanks

OWC buys RAM from its supplier(s?) and puts its own label on. I don't know who supplies the product to them or whether it's always the same supplier. There's no way to tell. I recommend OWC because they're known to stand solidly behind what they sell, they're exclusively Mac-oriented, and their prices are almost always competitive. You've found a lower price, but I don't know how likely G. Skill's product is to be satisfactory. Personally, I'd spend the extra $20 and buy from OWC. If you do decide to buy from NewEgg (where I often shop for hard drives, but have never bought RAM), please let us know how your G. Skill RAM works out.

  • Upgrade of mid-2012 MBP to 16GB RAM actually work?

I've got a 15-inch mid-2012 non-Retina MacBook Pro. Apple's website explicitly states that the maximum RAM supported on this machine is 8GB, but I see that Crucial is selling an upgrade to 16GB for my machine.http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/viewscanbyid.aspx?id=A978FEAC31D926C3 (I found this link by using the Crucial System Scanner, and also verified the stated compatibility with my machine by using Crucial's compatibility chart.) I telephoned AppleCare and spoke to a senior person, who reported back that the reason that Apple's website lists the 8GB maximum for my machine is that the motherboard won't "see" anything past 8GB of RAM. He said I could install the 16GB of RAM but that it wouldn't do any good. Since Crucial is actually selling 16GB of RAM for my machine, either Apple or Crucial is misinformed. Can someone please comment whether you have ever upgraded from 8GB to 16GB of RAM on this model of MBP, and if it made a difference? Metrics would help if you have them! Thank you.

Ouch. Perhaps the memory will fit, but consider your warranty before you march forward. I have a mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro with the Retina display, and 500G flash drive. I also ran the Crucial Memory App, and found that 16GB of RAM was offered "guaranteed" by Crucial to fit into my Mac. I had 8GB installed, but use the Mac to game and thought a RAM upgrade would benefit me. I've trusted Crucial (and still do) for years. All my memory upgrades come from Crucial, and I recommend them. However.. I received the memory, then proceeded to research how to install it. After a lot of searching, I finally called Apple. I have AppleCare (APP) on my Mac. No go, very much no go. Apple tells me the memory is soldered onto the motherboard on the Retina MacBook. Upgrades are only offered through Apple certified centeres, or my warranties are both void. Likewise, 8GB was the max memory Apple allows. The Tech likewise told me adding over Apple's recommended amount voids my warranty.  That last part may apply to you. If Apple states 8GB is the max, and your computer is under warranty, then I'd get something from Apple in writing before installing over that amount.

  • MBP 8,2 Ram Upgrade Compatibility

    I have a 2,2 Quad-Core 4 GB MBP 8,2. I think it is early 2011.
I have a freezing issue sometimes. I have an RAM optimizer app. And it sometimes hits to 100 mb free memory left.
Is every slot supports up to 8 GB?
How will it performance if I combine 8 GB and one of my 2 GB RAM's in total of 10 GB's.
Should I buy 2x4GB's instead for the best performance.
    Thanks for the answers.

  • FCP on iMac - video card RAM

What are the benefits from boosting video memory on the 20-in iMac from 128 MB to 256 MB? I'm interested in the effect on performance while using video editing software such as Final Cut Pro. Thanks!

    Hi:
I thought you was trying to upgrade an iMac you had, but you are getting a new one !
Motion will be the FCS program to take great advantage from your graphic card processor. Motion is GPU based.
The other componentes of FCS are CPU based. From FCP v5.1 you can use some of the Motion effects what means that your GPU power will help there.
I'm pretty sure you have visited this page:
    http://www.apple.com/imac/graphics.html
Here you can find the Motion graphics requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/motion/specs.html
Your best option is the 24" with the 7600 GT.
Think you'll need a second drive (external) to store your captured video.
    WHY DON'T YOU . . . ?
Probably you'll get a better and more flexible FCS station getting an used PowerMac that you can "dress" with better options to use FCS: second internal fast drive, graphic cards, etc.
