FCP on new iMac or keep present PowerMac?

Perhaps this sounds like a silly question, but then again, perhaps not...
I currently have:
- Dual 2.0 GHz 64-bit PowerPC G5;
- 2GB 400 MHz DDR SDRAM;
- 2 250GB Serial ATA 7200 rpm hard drive;
- AGP 8X Pro graphics slot;
- ATI Radeon 9600 with 128MB DDR SDRAM;
- 3 PCI-X slots (one 64-bit 133 MHz, two 64-bit 100 MHz); and
- 8X SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±R/CD-RW);
- Firewire 800 & 400
- USB 2
I also have an external HD and a DVI 19" monitor
Question: Would the new iMac be faster then my PowerMac?
I use the computer for normal everyday applications, but I also use the following programs often:
- Final Cut Pro HD (4.5)
- DVD STudio Pro 3
My thinking is, I can sell my MAC and have plenty of money to purchase a new iMac. If I sold my monitor with it, I would be even better off.
What do you guys think?
Would the new iMac be faster?
Would the new iMac be better for video editing?
Looking forward to your thoughts...

Hi Singit
Its hard to make a call as i don't know if you are an up and coming post house or a bed room industry..or whether you work on DV.Digibeta or HD..whether you are loaded or scrapping by making a living
Well..in this ever changing world it is tempting to upgrade, switch machines/models (whihc is what the corporation want), but reading your specs I would say that your MAc isd pretty spec happy. I must admit that I don't know what the exact up grading capabilities of the new imac is or how the new intel processors will work..but my advice is don't bother. The G5 will be much better regards upgrading (adding capture cards such as decklink..adding extra ram)..it sounds like you've already spent a decent amount of money on your machine and if it ain't broke don't fix it. The money a new Imac would cost..you could get a HD and SDI Decklink capture card (£260 in the UK), more drives..hire in a digi machine..buy a DV camera or a good DSLR. I run a small but busy post production house in the UK and I WOULD NOT use imacs full stop. I have a G4 Imac at home and the problem with it is that its a self contained unit. If the screen goes I've had it and also its about as upgradable as an Ibook
So thats my thoughts for what its worth

    Don't forget that the version of FCP and DVDSP are going to have to run under Rosetta if you get the iMac. This is going to make the iMac run them at far lower speeds than the PowerMac will. If you choose to upgrade to the Final Cut Studio when the Universal Binary version becomes available, it might be a wash, performance wise. I personally prefer the expandibility and upgradability of the PowerMac. You may want to wait until Universal Binaries of FC Studio become available, and see how the speed is before buying a new iMac now.
    And to DVD Ninja, it's spelled "Camaro". Just a pet peeve of mine.

  • Is the new iMac faster than my PowerMac G5 dual 2Ghz?

    I have a PowerMac G5, Dual 2Ghz (first generation model)
    2.5GB Ram, and a ATI 9800 Pro 256mb Graphics Card.
    Looking at the SPEC ratings on the Apple page, the new iMac (2.0Ghz model) scored...
    SPECint_rate2000 = 32.6
    SPECfp_rate2000 = 27.1
    And according to http://www.apple.com/lae/g5/ the dual 2Ghz scored...
    SPECint_rate2000 = 15.7
    SPECfp_rate2000 = 17.2
    Doesn't this mean is roughly twice as fast? Does SPEC just measure the processor or the whole system?
    And how does my ATI Radoen 9800 Pro 256MB compare to the ATI Radeon X1600 256MB?
    Thanks!

    I agree. Specs are great and certainly are helpful in comparing the new MacBook to the new iMac as they are quite similar. What's really interesting is how PowerPC coded apps will compare to their universal binary equivalents on the new machines. I for one am curious to see how the universal binary of FCP Studio runs on the new iMac vs today's PowerMac. While people have been using FCP tools on G5 iMacs and G4 PowerBooks, performance isn't nearly as good as the same app on a Dual or Quad G5 PowerMac. It could usher in a whole new segment of Pro tools users who can get good performance from a less expensive option like the new iMac.

  • Brand new imac 27" keeps crashing randomly in mavericks while idling, using firefox, transferring files, etc.  Reformatted and reinstalled everything from scratch after 15 plus crashes a day.  Crashes now only 4 times a day.  Help!

    Brand new imac 27" keeps crashing.  I'm running 10.9.2 with all software up to date.  It will crash on file tranfers to/from/between external drives, web browsing, word processing, video editing, and even while idling.  It used to crash every 15 minutes when I first got it but I reformatted and reinstalled all software.  Now it it still crashing albeit less often.  This is extremely frustrating because I have no idea what I can do to prevent it from happening!
    Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hmm thanks for the input.  Alright. I uninstalled Avast.  Was good for an hour or so.  I was doing some file browsing and crashed again.  Got this message.

  • What to buy: Old g5 PowerMac vs new iMac vs 8 Core Powermac?

    Hi all,
    I have a five year old Powerbook that has been around the world, dropped, spilled on, neglected. It’s time for a new computer that I can treat with more respect.
    My chief problem is that Adobe Photoshop Lightroom runs on this computer almost too slowly to make using it worth my while. I also use Photoshop/Illustrator for design, will be recording more and more music (4 tracks max I should think). I would like something that won’t lag for these programs, while running Firefox (an increasing memory hog) and iTunes (with a 200gb library, also a memory hog).
    I don’t know whether to get one of the new big ol’ iMacs, an old G5 PowerMac (which can be had for real cheap on Craigslist), or, to a lesser extent, go all out on one of the new 8 Core PowerMacs (which to me don’t seem worth the hefty price tag, especially as many of these programs aren’t keeping up with Apple’s processing innovations).
    Can anyone give me advice based on this alone? I’d much appreciate!
    Thank you!
    Alec

    I am very impressed with my iMac's ability to handle Garageband tracks. I have not been able to turn the playhead anything other than white. This machine is awesome.
    I have always been an iMac fan. They are near to impossible to upgrade except for ram but who cares? By the time you are ready to upgrade it is better to buy another machine anyway...a new iMac! CPU and graphic performance is improved so drastically that it is difficult to keep up with it with upgrades.
    I also love the new screens. They are much nicer than any of the Windows desktops or monitors I have seen in stores. My only complain is a slight darkening as you go down the page. The same color will be slightly darker at the bottom of the monitor. This has not effected anything I do so I can't really complain.
    The hard drive is a little bit of a problem, especially of you are needing 200GB just for music. The least expensive iMac can only be upgraded to 500GB. For me, I only make sure there is enough hard drive space to do my work on with lots to spare. All other items are stored on an external drive. iTunes has no problem keeping the library on an external drive. You just set the drive up in the preferences. I like Firefire 800 compatible drives for speedy transfers. Garageband sessions can be stored their as well and will even run from the drive. Keep Garageband on your mac.
    Unless you are a professional with some very demanding needs, the iMacs will be more than satisfying. As soon as you can afford it, max out their ram for more fun!
    Older G5's might do fine for you but they are short in Graphic memory, CPU speed and hard drive space.
    Kurt

  • PROS and CONS of running FCP on NEW iMACS?

    Hi gang...
    It's a sad day -- I've been running fcp 5.1.4 using Tiger on my PowerMac G5 (dual core 2.3GHz, 2.5GB of memory) for years now -- few real problems besides operator error.
    All has been good.
    Along comes a client shooting XDCAM footage and suddenly I'm feeling VERY behind the times. I'm unable to edit with this codec since it's not compatible with fcp 5.0. And since my G5 is pre-Intel processor, I'm unable to upgrade to fcp 6 or higher (is this accurate?)
    So what are the pros and cons of purchasing one of the new iMacs to run fcp 7? Although my G5 was installed with a DeckLink card, I never did any external monitoring using an NTSC monitor. Most of the stuff I'm doing is long form programming, straight cuts/dissolves, minimal graphics. I'm creating alot of content for the web, delivering some (non-broadcast) masters on dvd.
    Do the iMacs have external monitoring capabilities? (I'm under the impression they don't)
    Am I really at the point where I need to purchase new hardware? (I've been so happy with my G5.)
    What will be my minimum investment, and is the Macmini ($599) a viable option?
    And finally, does Joni love Chachi?
    Thanks

    FCS3 (FCP7) is only supported on intel processors. FCS2 (FCP6) runs fine on G5s.
    iMacs do not have external monitoring capabilities beyond using firewire out for DV. I don't know how the mini-dvi port works with something like the original Matrox MXO. It may work fine.
    Still, there is no way to hook up esata drives, replace the video card with something that supports Motion or Color or add any one of dozens of nifty bells and whistles.
    The mac mini is a poor choice. Lousy graphics support and NO expansion capabilities.
    Get a MacPro.

  • I'm thinking of  buying one of the new Imacs and am presently a PC user - how hard is it or how can I transfer files from my PC to a new IMac

    I am thinking about purchasing a new IMac and presently use a PC.  I would like to find out how difficult it is to transfer files from the PC to the IMac or in more detail - just how is it done.  Many thanks for any responses.

    There are several ways by which it can be done. There is a special Migration Assistant for transferring an entire user account from a PC to the Mac. You would have to establish a network connection between the two machines.
    Transfer the files you want to an external USB hard drive from the PC then transfer from the external drive to the Mac.
    Ask the Apple retailer if they will transfer your data to the new Mac at the time of purchase. You will need to bring the PC with you.

  • Optimizing work flow in FCP on new iMac? (dropped frames)

    Hello-
    I've recently purchased a new iMac, first in about 6 years. I'm looking for some advice about optimizing my work flow in FCP. I am largely self-taught, using FCP for hobbyist/amateur video.
    Until this new computer, I have been using FCP on other people's Macs (schools, arts institutions, etc), only resorting to my old Powerbook when absolutely necessary. So I have not had to worry about performance issues until now.
    I am shooting on a Kodak Zi8 pocket cam in 1080p HD .MOV files, 1920x1080 H.264, AAC audio.
    In my first attempts at editing the footage, I find that I am getting dropped frames on playback at every edit point - any time I cut between shots, add titles, etc.
    (I also tried editing some much smaller, compressed files (QT 854x480, H.264, AAC audio) in the timeline and had the frame drop problem.)
    Also, when I add titles, they do not preview render - I have to render them completely to be able to playback.
    When I allow FCP to change the sequence settings to match the clip, I get the following:
    1920 x 1080
    Aspect: HDTV 1080i (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect: Square
    Field Dominance: Upper (Odd)
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    In this instance I am editing footage that is stored on the local HD, but I have also tried editing footage from a USB 2.0 external drive, and got the same dropped frame problem.
    ...its a little frustrating to get these performance issues on this new computer, so I hope that someone here can help me resolve some of my problems. Hopefully this is a work flow issue, but if its a lack of hardware, well, shame on me for not looking into it enough.
    thanks in advance.

    Hi -
    H.264 is a recording and delivery format, but as you have discovered, it is very difficult to edit. Its qualities of recording a high quality image in a small file size, which make it attractive for use in Flash based camcorders, makes it very difficult for FCP to work with. Attempting to work in H.264 makes FCP drop frames, require constant rendering, etc.
    The best solution is to convert your footage to an edit friendly file format, such a ProRes LT or AIC. There will be minimal impact on the quality of the image. This conversion will result in files that are much larger than your original files, but will work easily in FCP.
    You don't say if you have FCS or just FCP, but if you do have FCS then you can use Compressor to do the conversion.
    Hope this helps.

  • New iMac - system keeps waiting while spiraling ball appears

    I'm really at a loss as to why my brand new iMac keeps waiting for...whatever and showing me the spiraling color ball (some call it the ball of death). It doesn't appear to be any one app that causes the system to wait and I have updated my OS to 10.4.3. I also chose the full power option so thinking that using the maximum processor would help...and it seemed to at first, but once again, I'm getting the spiraling ball.
    Any help is appreciated as it's getting to be a real problem.
    Thanks.

    iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.3) 1 G RAM

    Hi Miriam,
    Thanks for the suggestion.
    I just checked and the biggest use of cpu is the activity monitor itself. It consistently shows idle usage at 90% or greater. The other thing is that the problem happens sporadically, making it all the more fun.

  • How to transfer my pictures to my new iMac (and keep edits)?...

    I just got a new iMac, and want to transfer all the photos from my old iMac. (I do not want to use Migration Assistant).
    I have Aperture 2 (not the most recent version). Of course, I could export all of my photos and copy them over like any other files. But that wouldn't keep all of the edits I've made to many of the photos in Aperture.
    What is the proper way to transfer everything over so that I have all of it, along with the current edits I see when I look at the photos in Aperture on my old iMac? If you can help, please be very specific as I'm no expert when it comes to Aperture.
    Thanks!

    If you have a Managed Library:
    Copy the Aperture Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Mac to the same location on the New Mac. Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch Aperture. Select your Library as the one to open. Done.
    Somewhat more complicated if you have a Referenced Library, do you?
    Regards
    TD

  • Camera Position Icons Disappear after installing FCP on new iMac...

    Anybody have an idea? Just bought a new iMac with an Intel Core i7 processor and maxed out the RAM at 16 GB. Now, when launching Motion, the camera position icons in the top right corner of the viewer, and the camera view menu on the top left of the viewer have mostly disappeared - just leaving some weird colored blocks.
    Thanks!

    Update Motion to 4.0.3 - that was a bug that's been fixed...

  • Using Adobe CS4 on Windows side of new Imac: It keeps crashing..Help!!!

    Hello,
    I just bought a new 2009 Imac G5, 24in screen, desktop version, 3.06 GHZ Processor, 4 GB ram, 1TB of Storage. I used Boot Camp to split the hard drive down the middle (500 GB for each side) and I installed Windows XP service pack 3.
    My company gave me the new version of Adobe CS4 for Windows (brand new) and after a successful install, the programs tend to crash often. Especially Flash. Photoshop crashed as soon as I opened it up and it was a small file I was working with. What the heck is going on here people???? It's all new stuff.
    Anyone have a similar issue??? It's annoying and frustrating and has prevented me from getting a lot of work accomplished, so any help or advice would be great.
    Please help!
    Thanks!
    Mike
    p.s
    On a separate note(this is not a question just a comment): some of the Adobe fonts that come standard with the CS4 did not install properly and were not recognized by my computer. This is because of the Imac's graphics processor. I called Adobe and they had to manually walk me through the process (in Windows)of getting the processor to read the fonts. It was crazy and actually, it was not their responsibility to do this...the woman was just being extra nice. FYI

    Chat support suggested to uninstall Logic to see if the problem persists, but it isn't a viable solution because I need Logic for my work, and I already know almost for sure it's the source of the problem

  • I have working Netgear network. Want to add new Time Capsule and run 2nd network for new apple TV and Imac, and keep the netgear network for my PC and Canon printer.

    I have working Netgear N600 dual band router network. The existing network has an XP netbook PC, canon printer, 2 Iphones, Epson Air printer, an Ipad, 3 roku boxes, backup drive. Just bought a new Apple TV box, and time capsule 2T.  I have an IMac on order but don't have it here yet.
    My goal is to add new Time Capsule and create 2nd "apple" network for new apple TV, Iphones, Ipad, Epson Air printer and new Imac, and keep the netgear network for my PC, Roku TV boxes, and Canon printer and backup drive.
    The Netgear router, the time capsule and new IMac will be on the same desktop, I dont need to backup my netbook PC to time capsule.
    Where do I start?
    Which device connects to my modem first, the TC2 or the Netgear?
    Is it best wait for the Imac before starting or can the TC2 be set up from my Ipad or PC?
    Thanks.

    It is pretty simple..
    Setup the TC in bridge and plug it into the Netgear.. I would leave the netgear as the main router for now, although in the future you can swap things around. The netgear firmware may have issues with bonjour and airplay/airprint?? Does your ipad print ok now?
    You can setup the TC using Mac, PC (at least up to win7) or iOS.. they all have airport utility available.
    Bridge mode is set differently depending on the version of the utility. This is v5 and how the windows one will look (at least similar to).
    v6 will be as
    With the TC in bridge you will still create a wireless network.. and give it a different name from the netgear.. then all the apple devices can connect to it. Use ethernet rather than wireless if the imac is on the desktop with it. Much faster and better for using Time Machine backups.
    If you run into any issues.. just post the particular issue. It will take a bit of getting used to, but isn't hard.
