FCP only shares to Blu-ray at 720p

I am trying to make a blu-ray disk of high school basketball using Final Cut Pro 10.1. the video is recorded with a Panasonic HDC-TM700 shooting 1080p at 60fps.  During editing FCP X shows both the resolution and the frame rate to be that of the imported clips.  However, when I choose the 'Share - Blu-Ray' option the resolution becomes 1280X720p.  I have not been able to find any way to change the settings in a preference pane.  I have tried this on a Hackintosh i7 running Snow Leopard and FCP 10.0.08 as well as a MBPro 15"Retina running FCP 10.1.  Any help?

I can't find a way to change settings either.  A work around is to export a Master file.  Then bring that into Compressor.  Apply Blu-ray settings there.  Highlight the blu-ray video file and in the inspector window change the settings to what you desire.

  • FCP 7 "Share to blu-ray" burn issue.

This may not actually be a FCP issue, but possibly some of you here are experienced in the matter.
Firstly, my video is 1080/24p ProRes.
This is my first jump into Blu-ray, and I'm quickly learning the many work-arounds, but have run in to a problem.
Initially I tried exporting a QuickTime with "current settings", and dropping it in toast and encoding/burning.
Video looked pretty good, but it was choppy. Google tells me this seems to be a common issue with toast and 24p.
Most suggest encoding with Compressor and then burning with Toast.
Tried that, but I couldn't get it to just encode the files and that be all. It kept asking for a blu-ray disc and ejecting the drive, as if Compressor was going to burn it?
When I would choose "cancel burn", my only option, the whole batch would fail. After all that encoding time...
Wasn't too depressed, because after digging more, Google also told me that many believe the h264 encode using the "share" function in FCP produces better results. Though the options are non-existent, it did great. My only complaint is you are forced to convert audio to .ac3. Well that *****.
So I went ahead and exported all the audio from IN and OUT markers as .aiff.
This is where my problem arrives..
I threw the h264 and aiff in Toast, chose "never re-encode", and it burnt fine.
Video looks great, no stuttering. But the AUDIO! It slows drifts out of sync...
Video is an hour long, and at about 20 minutes in, it's 1-2 seconds behind, and goes from there.
    Why would that be?
    Any experience with this?
I checked, and the ac3 that FCP made, and the aiff are the EXACT same length.
Any thoughts? Or any other work-around for keeping audio lossless?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply, Johnny.
I wasn't saying AC3 s*u*c*k*s. And really.. Why is that word censored? I didn't do that.
I was saying it ***** that you ONLY have the option of AC3 with the "Share to blu-ray" feature.
And yea, I'm sure I would never know the differene, and especially not my grandparents with their home movies.
But it just seems d*u*m*b (can I say that?) to be going through all this trouble for a "lossless" lineage, ie. HD camera, FCP, Blu-ray burner/player, and have to compress the audio. Isn't that one of the main advantages of blu-ray?! Quality? Wether we can detect it or not?! Ha!. Okay..
I thought an easy workaround would be to export the audio to AIFF and drop it in.
No idea why it's drifting....but yes, in the end i may settle.
Though I'll feel cheated! Guess that's what I get for loving BOTH Apple and Blu-ray....
If anyone has other processes of getting good 24p to Blu-ray, please share!
    Thanks again.

  • FCP X fails to share to blu-ray or DVD, no chance to trash com.app...plsit from lion, what to do?

I burned some Blu-Ray before with my new FCPX, now I get a "Failed" message when I try to share both Blu-Ray and DVD to hard drive for an image or actually burn a disc. I saw one answer was to trash the com.apple.final...plist files but I do not know how to do it from the new Lion OS, any help?

    Tom,
Thank you so much. It trashed the files and now FCPX is burning my Blu-Ray :-)

  • The share operation Blu- ray has failed. quicktime Error: 0

the share operation Blu- ray has failed. quicktime Error: 0 anyone any idea how i overcome this ?

Are you working with native media? If you are, see if Final Cut will let you transcode a clip to Pro Res 422. Do an export test with that single clip. (Write the output to a disk image so you don't waste a disk.)

  • Share-to-Blu-Ray Default Encode Settings

When using the "Share to blu ray" feature in FCPX, what codec does it end up burning to disc?  H264? MPEG?
Also, is it possible to change these default settings?
    Any help is appreciated!

Just to add you would need to get Compressor if you wanted to customize the settings.

  • Trouble with FCP 7 and Share (for Blu-Ray)

I've done a bunch of reading in this forum this morning and I see that pretty much everyone agrees NOT to use the Share option within FCP7 for burning a blu-ray.  But I haven't come up with an exact answer as to why.  Until now I've actually had good success with this, although I have not compared it directly with a BD created in Compressor or Toast 10
That would be great to know, but more importantly for now here is my question:
I wanted to burn a BD from FCP7 using Share.  The project is 1 hour in length and the export took 5 hours.  When it got to the point of burning the BD it gave me an error message saying that the Blu-ray drive was in use by another program.  My only option was to cancel the burn, and thus start all over again!!
However, checking the scratch discs it appears that the video and audio files were created. So the root of my question is... what can I do with those created files now?  Can I put them into Compressor?  How can I burn a BD from those files without having to go through the 5 hour export again?
    Thank you very much!!
    Eric

Hi Eric, here is a response a I just posted for someone else...
How odd that the BluRay disc using share will not play... I've used Share before successfully, except since I don't have a blu ray burner, I burned a AVCHD disc (which only plays on a BluRay Player).
Perhaps you took a wrong turn somewhere... What were your EXACT steps?
Do you have Toast? That may be another solution... Follow this thread on Creative Cow for that: http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/20/861769
    Here is a tutorial on using Compressor (I have not watched, if it s u c k s, sorry): Compressor 3.5 Tutorial: Burning a Blu-Ray and/or DVD - YouTube
Here is the Kenstone tutorial for creating a AVCHD disc... perhaps it will shed some light in case you did something wrong:http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/burn_br_mac_superdrive_stone.html

  • Fcp 7 crashes continually while trying to share to blu ray

I'm trying to burn a video to blu ray, but FCP 7 crashes continually while trying to convert the file.  I've tried restarting, but the same problem persists.  The video is 14 minutes long.

I don't know precisely what your max length would be for DVD-5, but according to Compressor, the preset is 30Mbs - in which case, you're pushing it. Try exporting as QT, taking the QT into Compressor and dropping the bit rate a little to see whether it will then fit.
    Good luck.

  • Share to Blu-ray

Recently I completed a six minute project in After Effects and rendered all the clips in ProRes 1920x10830P. I exported the project via "Share" in the file menu and created an AVCHD single layer disk that plays in a Blue-Ray player. It worked great, the client really liked it.
However, I have been trying to export an XDCAM EX 1080P30 project and I keep getting a "quicktime 0" error message. I tried putting the project into a ProRes time line but got the same result.
This project is significantly longer, 1hr 45min, so thinking it might be a size thing I did a test with six minutes and it worked. The XDCAM EX Master file is approximately 28GB's which means in should only be about 5:1 compression and should still look great. But I can't get it to work.
Anyone tried this? Or know how to resolve this?

I have only been able to get it to work on projects less than 10 minutes long. It will do the encode but then it hangs when I insert media to be burned. What you might try is export to compressor>create blu-ray disc. In the project pane at the upper right, click on create blu-ray disc. In the inspector click on job action. Change the output device from your optical drive to "Hard Drive (blu-Ray)" This will create an H.264 video file, an AC3 file,. and a disc image file. You can then burn the disc image onto your media with either disc utility or Toast 9/10.
Aleternatively, you can take the H.264 file and ac3 file into Toast and create your blu-ray disc there.

  • *** FCP output settings for Blu-Ray?

I'm not sure if/how this is possible, but I'd like to export one of my HDV sequences and take it to a production house that can burn a Blu-Ray disc for me. Is it possible to do this using FCP/Compressor or should I wait until NAB for hopefully FCP 6?
If it's possible to export an HDV quality master can someone walk me through it? Would it work for them to use a file that I just export as a full-quality self-contained Quicktime movie?
    Thanks in advance.

Talk to the production house of choice. Only they can tell you what they need. Hopefully for you it won't be HDV.

  • FCP7: Share to Blu-Ray

    Hi guys,
    I use FCP7 and when I need to create a blu-ray I make a click on "Share", and then "Blu-ray". Blu-ray is a default setup in FCP7.
    But this default setup create a 720p blu-ray, not a full HD 1080 blu-ray.
Can anyone suggest how create a Full HD blu-ray, please?
    Thanks in advance,

We see this same question several times a week so try searching the forum for some helpful suggestions. Most of us end up going to Adobe Encore or Toast on the Macintosh. Both require a Mac-compatible BD burner. The easier route is to locate a service that offers an Adobe CS4 package on a PC with an experienced BD authoring expert.

  • Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

When I get a computer with a blu ray player I expect it to play blu ray discs... all of them. It works with some but not all.
The discs it does not work with, what happens is it will ask me "Do you want to check for updates" and there will be a box to check yes or no. In the background it will say disc is ready to be played, just push play. Easy right? HECK NO.
If you check yes, it will do the little wait symbol and process the request checking for updates, then come right back and ask you again, a never ending circle of asking to check for updates. If you push NO, it will go away, then you have a couple options, one is open up the menu and see if there is actually an update... nope. no update there. the other option is do what it says and push play since it thinks the blu ray is ready to play. Once I push play it starts to think and pops up that "Do you want to check for updates" again. It is so frustrating. HEY HP, FIX THIS DUMB CIRCULAR TRAP THAT WONT LET ME WATCH BLU RAY.
And this is a major motion picture blu ray disc from block buster video. Not some copied random disc. So, I know it aint the disc.
    This question was solved.

I am running into this same issue. I have a HPE-180t with a BD-RE BH20L Blu-Ray drive. I put in 'Scott Pilgrim vs The World' and got a message that asked if i wanted to update, to which I clicked 'NO' and then after about 5 sec of it seaching the drive it replied with "Format Not Supported". I ejected and reinserted a few times and tried another Blu-Ray movie (also The Expendables) and it gave me the same message.
I searched the internet and found a forum message with steps to uninstall the DVD portion of MediaSmart and reinstall using Recovery Manager, but after the uninstall now Recovery Manager will not open to reinstall HP MediaSmart DVD.
I then attempted a Windows System Restore to a few days prior, which went through the motions, but then had a failed message upon reboot.
I then ran the HP Support Assistant > Troubleshoot > Utilities> Storage Devices> Optical Drives and ran the test on the BH20L drive which failed in recognizing any Blu-Ray media (movie or blank BD-R). I had just used this drive a week ago to archive some photos onto the blank Blu-Ray media mentioned without issue.
Please help HP, this is really a nuisance for this seriously robust machine.
[edit]...Also I went out to the website for my system looking for any updates and the only one I installed was a BIOS update dated November 2010.

  • 3 questions about FCP 7 and Blu-Ray

    Hi Folks,
After reading the other posts on Blu-Ray and FCP 7 I still have just 3 questions:
    1. I would like to get an internal burner. I see that at MacMall they have one that is specific for my MacPro model (2008) and there's one that they sell for the 2009 version. So it seems that I have to select a specific drive for my Mac Pro model correct?
    http://www.macmall.com/p/MCE-DVD-Drives/product~dpno~7785361~pdp.fedabdd
Does anyone recommend a specific brand/type?
    1. If I add the chapters mark on my project and export to a Quick Time file, will the chapters be present and accessible when I burn the Blu-Ray disk?
    2. Looks like the best option is to buy Toast but, just to make sure I understood the issue with the share to Blu-Ray: If I just have one simple project with a movie with about 10 chapters, is it worth trying to use the option to share to Blu-Ray or is it not recommended for any type of project?
OK, I know I said 3 questions Just one more?
Back in the days, I remember compatibility issues with some types of DVD media and DVD players (DVD-R, DVD+R, brand, etc). Is there such a thing with Blu-Ray media and the current players?
Again, many thanks for your time and patience!
    Best regards,
    Ismenio

I use OWC (macsales.com) for purchasing blu ray burners. good company.
    Not certain on markers.
I create blu ray disc with Compressor in FCS3 without many issues but not using Share.
    I don't advise using Share.
Set your markers on a short clip.
Export self contained with the markers, and then use Compressor directly

  • Best way to copy FCP-created Blu-ray Disc?

Tried using FCP7 to burn another copy of a Blu-ray disc a week after I burned the first copy. But since I didn't want to wait 16 hours for FCP to encode the Blu-ray files again, I copied the files off the first Blu-ray Disc I'd burned onto my desktop. Then, I inserted a blank Blu-ray Disc into my external burner and copied the desktop files onto it.
The new disc burned with those files ... but when I play it back in my Blu-ray player, there's no audio. Any ideas??

Try making a disk image from your original disc, then burning from that.
    1. Insert your disc and launch Disk Utility.
    2. Select your optical drive in Disk Utility.
    3. Choose File > New > Disk Image from<disk name>.
    4. Choose DVD/CD Master, press OK, and wait.
    5. Select your new image on the left, then press Burn in the toolbar.
Not sure if this process has changed for Blu-ray but I suspect not. The disk format for DVD and Blu-ray is UDF (not FAT32 or HFS+ which you get from a standard Finder burn).

  • Creating 1080p Blu-Ray with Final Cut Pro 10.0.7?

The latest version of Final Cut Pro (Vers 10.0.7) seems to share to Blu-Ray disk only at 720p resolution (1280X720) - not 1080P (1920X1200).  I know you can always use Compressor to create a 1080p Blu-Ray, but is there any way to create a 1080p Blu-Ray disk directly with Final Cut Pro?  It seems to me I was able to do this with earlier versions of Final Cut Pro X.

If you do a 1080 project @24fps or 29.97fps, FCPX will output 1080 frame size using the Blu-Ray settings. If you use Share >BD for either 720 or 1080 @ 60fps, it will choose the 720 resolution.
I have no idea whether this was always the case.

  • Final Cut Pro X Blu Ray chapters

I have created several Blu Rays using the chapter markers in FCPX and if I create a DVD from the share menu it works fine in either a DVD or Blu Ray player.
However if I create a BD from the same original 1080P project and use share/create Blu ray the resulting disk has a functioning menu and everything is there but skip only functions on some (PS3) but neither of my Panasonic BD players so the encoding on disk must not be fully complient. My only other option is to render a file and burn it in Toast but there are big issues there also. And output from Compressor seems to have the same issu. Anyone know a work around for this? The disks play beautifully and look great but just don't function as they should.

I don't think that FCP will give you much control over the quality of the bluray disk, so this may not be an issue for you.  You may have more control in compressor but you might just want to do a test and see what the quality look like.  the 2 other options I know about are roxio toast and adobe encore.
