FCP only utilizing .02 CPU on Render?

Since yesterday my FCP and Compressor have been going haywire. Originally my problems started when i was using compressor to render out a single pass.m2v and a 48:16 aiff, for a dvd to send out to my client. I have been doing this conversion for the past 6 months it takes no longer than an hour and some change. Well Thursday comes and i get the unknown time issue. At the same time though my FCP render time has quadrupled. Im using a 1st Rev MBP 2.16 15" with 2gb ram, connect via GigabitEthernet to a G5 i use as a server for my raid array. My raid is connected to the G5 via multilane to a PCI-E HighpointTech card. The footage i am working with is DV, and titles that have been converted to anamorphic .mov a show only takes about 20 min to render normally, however since thursday my computer is now taking 3-4 hours to complete a render, and during which is only utilizing .02 of the CPU. I am stumpped i have trashed the render files, trashed the preferences, and zapped the pram. I searched the forums but i couldnt find anyone with a similar problem, i am seriously about to just wipe my computer and fresh install everything

Im running 6.0.4 on osx 10.5.4, Thats what i originally thought the issue was, so i migrated all the media files over to my internal HD, and i still got the same results. After that i thought it was maybe something got tweaked in the sequence so i migrated a previous project over to my computer that had rendered out normally 3 days before, and to no avail it took 3 hours and 20 min. So at this point im thinking either there is an issue with my hardware, or gremlins are messing with me, because i cant think of a single thing. I really dont want to have to wipe and reinstall, that would set me back a full day, and right now my workload just wont permit that.

  • FCP 5.0.4 won't render all tracks.

FCP 5.0.4 fails to render all of my tracks. There are three, and in some places, four video tracks. It only renders the third and fourth tracks. Plays fine in the timeline but will not output in any format. Audio is fine. Video is all black except where there are three or more video tracks, the topmost tracks play fine.
I have trashed FCP preferences, uninstalled and reinstalled FCP - no change. The source files are fine, as I can play them in Quicktime with no problem. They even play on other machines.
Any ideas? Please don't tell me to trash the preferences, as I've already tried that.

I've been pullin' my hair out lately with the whole render issue as well. MAY have just stumbled onto a solution a few min ago. I looked at the permissions settings on the external disc that I'm using as a scratch disk. It was set to read/write for everyone under the sun. I thought I'd just propogate those permissions one more time to be safe and I got an error msg that said I couldn't propogate because some items won't let me. So, I checked IGNORE OWNERSHIP ON THIS VOLUME and voila. Render issue solved. However, I don't think this is the best way to solve the problem...but in a pinch...may just work for ya.
    Good luck

  • Airport Process utilizing high CPU utilization

I currently have a 13 inch MacBook Pro i7 (2012 version).  Recently I upgraded to Mavericks.  After using the computer for a day after the upgrade, I began to notice it becoming very hot and the fans running very high.  Looking at the running processes i noticed that a process called "airport" was running and utilizing high CPU times causing the heating up and fans running.  Once I stopped this process, the laptop went back to operating at normal levels.
Unfortunately this issue began to come back several times....the "airport" process starting at any time and utilizing high CPU utilization....again only by killing this process fixed this issue.
After seeing this behavior over several days, I decised to wipe the drive and install a clean copy of Mavericks in the computer.  Thought here was that possibly something did not carry over correctly from the upgrade from Mountain Lion to Mavericks.  Unfortunely this did not correct the issue with the "airport" process as it still is continiung to launch at any time and spike the processor until I manually kill the process.
I do not recall this issue occuring while running Mountain Lion so it seems to be specific to Mavericks at this point.
I was hoping to hear if any other have experienced this type of issues while running Mavericks.

You should be able to find the information you are looking for from the default Total CPU Utilization Percentage monitor.  This monitor has a built in diagnostic task that will kick off when an alert is triggered to list the top cpu consuming processes.
To find which processes were causing CPU to spike, simply review the State Change Events history in health explorer for the machine that was affected, for the Total CPU Utilization Percentage monitor.  I have modified my second screen shot
to remove machine names, but you should get the idea.  If a cpu monitor went from green to red, it will run the diagnostic task and list the process information and cpu usage at the time of the alert under state change events.

  • Arch only detecting 1 CPU 1 core instead of 16 processors

    EDIT:
It turns out it was a BIOS problem. I flashed to a different BIOS and reset everything to default settings in the BIOS, and now all 16 processors are recognized.
I have a system with an Asus Z8PE-D18 motherboard with 2 Xeon E5520 CPUs. Each CPU has 4 cores and 8 threads, so linux SMP should see 16 processors. But my recent Arch linux install only sees 1 CPU 1 core. Is this a kernel bug, or is something not configured properly? I have another similar machine running Ubuntu that sees all 16 processors, and the only difference I see offhand is that uname -a gives "SMP" but not "SMP PREEMPT" as shown below. Is that significant?
I'm new to Arch linux. What is the best way to try a different kernel without compiling it myself? Any suggestions on a kernel package to try?

  • IMovie only using 50% CPU power

    Hi,
When I export my project in iMovie my CPU usage holds at 50%. I accept this does mean I can do other things but would like the export to go faster.
Is this usual for iMovie to only use 50% CPU (and only about 1gb of RAM (of 8gb)) or do I need to do something?
New to Macs so any help appreciated.
    dcbevan

    Hi
As I get it - Doesn't iMovie take full use of multiple core processors. Not even Pro
    applications does this to 100%
    BUT
RAM - iMovie or FinalCut are not that RAM hungry - 1 to 2 GB would be OK
Free Space on Start-up hard disk - VERY IMPORTANT
    • 25Gb my minimum for iDVD
    • 10Gb my minimum for iMovie
    • 5Gb and iMovie runs slow and instable
    • <1Gb and iMovie might not run OK at all
Other applications running in paralell - results in bad performances
    • Energy Saver
    • Do not spinn down hard disks
    • Use of USB/USB2 external hard disks = Slow and bad performances especially when getting full
FireWire or internal e-Sata performs best.
    • Screen savers - may be (by directing it to an empty folder - I got the feeling of slight increase
    in performances)
My list on howto speed up iDVD Slightly - might also applie on iMovie.
    *Speed up iDVD*
    To speed up iDVD
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk - if less than 5Gb slow and unstable - less than 1Gb might even not start.
    • Choise of encoding method will give very different productions speeds. On my d-G5 2GHz
*Professional Quality (movies + menus up to 120 min.)* - BEST
Takes about 2 x times the other ones - but if quality is of essence
(Quality might be as good as or even better for movies under 60 minutes - by using Best Performances BUT not for movies up to 120 minutes)
2 hour movie + menu = about 4 hours to encode at it’s best on my system
*Best Performances (movies + menus less than 60 min.)* - High quality on final DVD
1 hour including menu = about 1 hour to encode
*High Quality* (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) *(movies + menus up to 120 min.)* - slightly lower quality than above
2 hours including menu = about 2 hour to encode
    • Use an as simple DVD-menu possibly without any animation at all. This reduces processing speed dramatically. I use ”Old Theme - and Brushed Metal” and animation turned off.
    • An as fast Mac and as many cores/CPUs possibly. My PowerMac G5 has two CPUs and iDVD uses about 120% = use more than only one CPU/Core. How many it can address I don’t know (anyone ? )
    • If possibly - Use two internally e-Sata drives - Drive access takes a great deal of time
else FW-800 or FW-400 or USB2 or network storage (slowest and near to useless)
to work on one (internal, boot, Mac OS, Start-up hard disk - will be BAD - and slow
Normally my d-G5 2GHz takes about 2 x movie material when iDVD and Mac OS on one internal HD and material is on the other internal one.
Now with material on an external USB2-drive and an external Lacie FW-400 as Start-up drive material of about 1.5h will need about 4-6 hours to get encoded and burned to DVD.
Choise and use of hard disks is essential.
    • I guess that a Solid State Disks might improve speed
    • No other programs running in BackGround eg EnergySaver, Internet, AirPort, Bluetooth etc.
    • Don’t let HD spinn down or be turned off (in EnergySave)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screensaver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
    • If Mac with only place for one internal hard disk. Then I would try to use an external FW (Mac OS Extended) one as Start-Up hard disk and store material on the internal one.
eg iMac or ProBook or alike.
    from Karsten -
    • I assume that resolution and codec of source is another factor ... scaling (e.g. 1280x720 to 720x576 = that is an 'un-even' calculation). or, a difference in speed reg. to h264, dv-stream or aic as input ....

  • Why only using one CPU

Just noticed when importing CD into iTunes on my MacBook is only uses one cpu, with activity monitor it show 98-100% CPU and never goes over 100%
My fans also run when importing, I use lossless.
Why not use more CPU speed?
    R

I believe only applications writen to do so will take advantage of dual processors. I guess iTunes has not yet been updated for dual processor use.

When you bring up Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder, then, you only see one CPU usage graph when you click the "CPU" tab at the bottom?  Not something like this:
If that's the case, we have a puzzle on our hands, since the diagnostics should report a failed CPU, I would think..
Just for kicks, in System Profiler, what is your information display?  Copy down to just before the serial number, as in (my ancient machine)
    Hardware Overview:
      Machine Name:          Power Mac G5
      Machine Model:          PowerMac7,2
      CPU Type:          PowerPC 970  (2.2)
      Number Of CPUs:          2
      CPU Speed:          2 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU):          512 KB
      Memory:          5 GB
      Bus Speed:          1 GHz
      Boot ROM Version:          5.1.4f0
And paste it into the reply like you did before.
(By the way, and off topic, I at least like the new ability to upload a picture directly.  One good change to the discussions.)

  • W2100z Memory Config - 2x 2GB and Solaris only reports 1 CPU right now

I inherited a w2100z and installed OpenSolaris on it. The OS only reports 1 CPU in psrinfo. It came with 2 2GB memory sticks and I moved them to DIMM slotts 3 and 4. Why is only 1 CPU reported? Does the other CPU need a pair of DIMMs installed on the mezzanine? Thanks.

I just bought some ram today... I can't wait to see how this machine stacks up against the Sun X4150s and M4000s we have at work. I know it won't hold a candle to them but it should be interesting to see.
It would be nice to pick a pair of 285 processors in the future but I read about some bugs in another post and they are scarring me away from the dual cores just a little bit. Guess I'll have to do some more research on the problems.

  • No automation on 3rd party plugs, and they only address 1 cpu?

    Hey guys,
A user had posted an alarming message on a previous post, and I thought I'd address it in it's own post.
He basically stated that some major 3rd party plugs, namely Native Instruments and "many other software instrument manufacturers" can only address one CPU in the new Mac Pros, and that in Logic 8 you can no longer automate these 3rd party instruments. We do a LOT of automating in 7 here, on Kontakt, many others, and that would definitely prevent me from doing the change over any time soon. I'm sure they'll fix it at some point, but can anyone confirm that this is true? Thanks homies.
    Tyler

Well, one of the mentioned rumours is true. E.g. Kontakt 3 obviously doesn't use more than one CPU at a time - even with the "Multiprocessor Support" option enabled.
Concerning the Automation everything works fine as always here with NI Kontakt 2/3 and Reaktor.

  • Premiere only utilizing 25-35% of my CPU - CS5.5 & CS6

    Hi all,
I am backed up with at least 3 months of wedding videography projects and I am trying to figure out how to get my encoding and rendering times down. I have looked all over the forums trying to figure out my bottleneck. I thought it was my hard drives so I bought 3 2TB Seagate Barracudas and spread out my workflow. My CPU is only working at 35% and I'm getting very frustrated by it. I'm not even overclocked.
I have Premiere Pro CS6 on my boot drive, the project and media on my Raid, my media cache files and preview files on the hitachi drive, and my disk swap file on the WD drive.I have the Mercury Hardware Playback working with my GTX460. (Should I try turning that off and use software?) It took me 27 hours to encode/export my 2 hour video on mpeg2 Bluray. Then the DVD mpeg2 file took 17 hours to export. I tried the h264 instead of mpeg2 and it didn't export correctly so I stopped using that codec. It takes me about 20 minutes just to render 3 minutes of footage with a magic bullet effect applied.
Is there anything that looks off in this setup? Also I have tried it with CS5.5 and 6 and they seem to be about the same. The new hard drives and CS6 have given me only a 10% increase from 25%cpu to 35% usage. Thank you so much for your help in advance!

    2TB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm
    2TB Hitachi Deskstar 7200rpm
    2TB WD Green Drive
    4TB (2x2) Seagate Barracudas 7200rpm in Raid0

Magic Bullet has been known to cause poor thread usage. However this is sometimes because it's using your GPU, depending on how you have your settings setup. Usually (in most cases) though it will move even slower if you use CPU only. I have read about cases though where it doesn't turn out that way. The easiest way to check though is to export it with the magic bullet effects taken off the clips or disabled and then check your CPU usage.
Either way though I can almost promise your slow exports are being caused by Magic Bullet. I have seen so many people who use Magic Bullet end up not using it as often because of how slow it makes export times.
I also doubt your footage is the cause because I edit with ProRes HQ everyday which is 220Mpbs and I always see 95-100 percent CPU usage. My GPU is normally pushing around 30 percent or so whenever I have effects that are rendered by my GPU.
However though we will know once you test it. If that's not the problem then I have no idea what is going on. I'm sure someone else on the forum might be able to come up with some ideas though. (If this turns out not to be the issue)

  • FCP 6.0.1 crashes on render

I have an 88 minute sequence I'm try to render. Everytime it gets somewhere around 75% FCP just crashes. I'm running the full FCS 2 installation with the latest updates on a G5 Dual 2.7GHz with 8GB RAM and a GeForce 6800GT. This project was originally a FCP 5.1.4 project. It's actually finished, but just in case I want to go back and make changes to it later I want to convert it to FCP6. I got a message about the flipped fields on import/conversion and answered "no" to fixing it since I know I don't have flipped fields.
There's multiple sequences in this project and they are all DVCPRO 1080/24p. Two 88 min sequences, two 90 second sequences, and a 6 minute sequence. They all render fine except one of the 88 minute sequences. I tried duplicating the 88 minute sequence that did render, adding the additional title overlay track (copied from the sequence that won't render) and tried rendering and it still crashes. I never had this issue with this project in FCP 5.1.4.
I did update Magic Bullet Editors to 2.1.1 because I thought the Look Suite might be causing it, but that didn't solve it. I've also removed the extra QT codecs I have installed: DivX, some AC3 video codec for playing AVI, and Perian. I'm trying to do another render now, but because of the amount of color correction it take about 10-12 hours, so I won't know if it crashes again until I get home tonight.
I copied the crash report below. I have not idea what all this means. Any ideas as to what's causing this? Thanks for the help.

Before I retire for the rest of the night I should mention a few more things.
The entire computer was re-setup clean. Full erase and install of OS X 10.4.10 and clean install of FCS2.
I did use the Render Manager to erase all render files and tried again... multiple times.
I restarted the G5 each time and tried rendering with no other apps running.
    I've repaired permissions.
At least one time I came back to the computer and FCP was just closed with no crash or warning messages. Every other time I get a message allowing me to send a report to Apple. I've sent the report only once since the crash report is the same (I compared them).
I tried re-importing the project from the original project file.
Originally, before I was told by others to answer "no" to the field question on import, I answered "yes" to that question and was able to render every sequence in the project without any issues. After being told to answer "no" I deleted the project and render files, reimported the project, and am now trying to render again.
If you're wondering why I would want to work on the project some more I'm thinking of doing the color correction all over again using Color so I can see if I get better results than with Magic Bullet Editors Look Suit or Colorista. This required me to convert the 5.1.4 project to 6.0.1. I know it's not recommended, but I want to give it a shot anyways to see if I can improve the project.
That's all I have right now. If you need any other specific info let me know. I really appreciate the help anyone is able to provide. Thanks!
    -Mike

  • FCP (7.0.3) continually losing render files

    MacPro build 5,1; dual 2.66 6-core Xeons, 16 gig RAM, OS 10.6.8.
This is more a request for speculation and enlightenment than a cry for help.  I have my opinions as to why its happening, but I'd appreciate any suggestions the greater minds in this forum could provide...
At one of my major client's facilities, their FCP system is what I would describe as "not set up according to best practice".  By that, I mean they have an internal RAID5 with 4 1TB drives (2.61 useful capacity), upon which both the applications and the media reside.
As I told them when they first set this up, "this can cause problems", and I think this might be one of them.  I am CONSTANTLY having to re-render.  No, it's not differences between media and timeline formats.  No, I'm not moving/deleting/monkeying with the media on the desktop.  I render, save, quit...and when I re-open the project, there's about a 50% likelihood that the sequence will have to be rendered again.
This issue seems to be getting worse with age...I've been working on this particular computer for almost a year now, and its gone from being an occasional nuisance to a very regular (and time-consuming) problem.  I strive to keep the drive as clean as possible (offloading old projects, media, etc., to our storage server), and right now have 900 gig of free space on the RAID.  I do not do the maintenence on this machine (as I am only a user, not the admin).  Are there any tips I can give Mr. Admin (besides get seperate media drives, which I've mentioned many a time...)?

Im confused how your Mac Pro is set up
    This should be:
the system boot drive containing the OS, applications and your FCP project files.
the internal Raid which is a separate physical drive from the boot drive containing the  scratch disc folder
see the Edit Smarter web page on how best to configure FCP here:
    Edit Smarter
I would suggest deleting FCP preferences as per Digital Rebellions Preference Manager
I would further suggest buying and running Disc Warrior on all your drives regularly:

  • Premiere Pro CC 2014 and AME using only 25% of CPU

    Hello all,
I've been having this problem with Premiere PRO CC 2014 and that when exporting it uses only 25% of my CPU thus taking 4 times longer than CS6 to export the same file project. I read a couple of forums with people having the same problems, I tired disabling CPU parking, disabling "Import sequences natively" in AME but no result.
    Quick PC specs:
    i5 4670
    16GB of RAM
    GeForce GTX 760 4GB DDR5
Everything for Adobe including the video files in use are of Samsung's SSD drives. Using CUDA as the render engine.
Currently one hour and 4 minutes clip in 4k takes about 52 hours to encode in Premiere CC 2014 and 9hr to encode the same project in CS6. Any ideas?

Take a look at your GPU usage with something like GPU-Z to see if both Premiere versions are using the same amount of MPE GPU hardware acceleration.  Actually with CC 2014 it might work faster because Adobe added in more 4k effects/features for GPU acceleration.
You might want to download our Premiere Pro BenchMark (PPBM) and run it on both versions.  The H.264 very complex timeline has 4K material in it and usually shows Premiere Pro 8.xxx take about only half the time that Premiere Pro CS6 take to export that same timeline.

  • FCP 7.0.3 doesn´t render in Lion

Everytime I start a new project with just two little clips and try to render it, FCP tells me there is not enough Ram available. But I have 24GB.

Does the error message actually state that it is "RAM" or does it use the term "Memory"?
If the message refers to lack of memory, it could be referring to lack of hard drive space on the boot drive.  The system uses free space for temp and swap files.  All drives should have at least 15% free space available at all times.
