FCP P2 import codecs

My FCP is in French so please excuse.....my French.
I'm importing my images filmed with the panasonic HVX200 using setting 1080i/25P. I use the setting on FCP, DVCPRO HD – 1080i50. I understand that progressive on the HVX is a sort of double interlacing.
When I import into FCP using « list and transfer » the compressor in the clip listing is DVCPRO HD 1080p25 – when I analyse the shot in tools I get Codec : DVCPRO HD 1080p25 medium quality.
However, if I import into FCP using P2LOG PRO the compressor of the same shot is DVCPRO HD 1080i50 ( analysis of shot in tools - Codec 1080i50 maximum quality).
When I do « command i » on the QT images imported using both methods the codec of the shot is DVCPRO HD 1080i50.
In the timeline I have the possibility of putting the settings of the sequence as DVCPRO HD 1080i50 ou DVCPRO HD 1080p25.
All this suggests that sometimes 1080p25 is treated as if it was the same as 1080i50 and sometimes not.
Is the difference in codecs just a different codec for reading the images and the same codec is used for importing?
I'm quite confused, and don't want to introduce an unwanted compression to my images.
Thankyou in advance.

If I remember correctly, 25p is simply 50i with the same image recorded twice.
Put the material in the sequence setting that matches those on the camera when you recorded the material and edit away.

  • FCP using Matrox Codec?

Hello all. New FCP user here.
We just upgraded our two old Matrox Digisuite MAX NLE's and are now working with two FCP Quad G5 systems.
Anyone else out there make the switch from Matrox to FCP? If so, did you have any luck transferring your old Matrox clips to the FCP system? I can't seem to find any render codec that looks right. Either too "jiggly" or too "jaggy". Obviously some sort of field-related problem, but I am stumped so far (did I mention I was a new user to FCP...)
I have TONS of footage to transfer over, so the "quickest/easiest" method is preferred.
Any help here would be great. Thanks.

    Yes and yes.
Interestingly enough, Mac AE wont even recognize the Matrox clips to import! I was totally surprised by that. FCP would import them, but not AE.
I have spent several hours working with FCP and Compressor to find some settings that would work, but with no luck. Hence my post here finally.
I am hoping to find another former Matrox user who might have solved this already...

  • Will FCP 7 import AVI video from my Nikon D90?

Will FCP 7 import AVI video directly from my Nikon D90?
If not, is there a simple workaround?

The material has to be converted to the Apple Intermediate Codec. You can probably do this using MPEG Streamclip.

  • FCP XML Import on Premiere CS4.0.1 Windows

Great work on implementing FCP XML import on CS4.0.1. <br /><br />We have all our media mounted on a network share. On the Mac exporting a sequence from FCP and then importing into Premiere on the Mac works no problems. On Windows this is a problem, Premiere prompts for each of the media items, which is pretty painful to re-link again. <br /><br />Looking at the FCP XML this appears to be down to the <pathurl> area of the XML. These are typically file://server/Volumes..... etc... which doesn't translate to any of the file mountings on Windows, which are D: E: F: etc... mounted drives. Is there any way to help us? We can write a script to manually modify the XML. Can you explain how Premiere Windows likes to read these Mac URLs?

Thank you all for your help. It still leaves a bit of a workflow problem. <br /><br />Basically we have some people ingesting / organizing content and maintaining on a network share. Duplicating the media is slow and moving it all into one volume is not too good either as it breaks all the relationships for others. Re-linking is good, but doesn't work if the material is spread across subdirectories and giving a key to link all the media together looses some of the benefit of having the export from FCP in the first place, it's just as easy to re-make the edit.<br /><br />We are only using cut edits, so this is quite simple. For users on the Mac using FCP and handing off to Premier it works fine, the problem is we want to hand off to Windows Premier. It's ok to run a script over the files to change the XML naming of the <pathurl> which seems to be causing the problem, but how to describe this in the Windows world?<br /><br />Thanks for all the help.... anyone from Adobe with any ideas?<br /><br />The problem as I see it is how to identify Mac OS mounts to a Windows version of Premier on XML import.

  • Expoting H.264 from FCP 5.1 "Codec error"

    The Problem:
I am trying to export a QT movie from FCP 5.1 with the H.264 codec
using "export/quicktime movie" and I get a "Codec error" message.
    The Situation:
I am using FCP 5.1 to sequence imported QT movies I have made in Foto Magico (640x480-30 fps-H.264 Codec). I have no problem getting these to run in the timeline as long as I match these sequence settings (they run fine/no rendering needed). When I try to export using "export/quicktime movie" I get a "Codec error" message. My understanding of this export path is that it doesn't recompress clips like the "export/using quicktime conversion" does. It will export a H.264 movie using "export/using quicktime conversion" but it takes forever and I have a lot of media to crunch, Any suggestions?
    Thanks...

  • File Crashing FCP - Can import from different tape brand be at fault?

I always use Sony Premium mini DV tapes and import my video through my Sony DSR-11 miniDV deck into FCP.
I was recently handed a Fujifilm miniDV tape. The video imported fine. But once I dragged it to the timeline, rendering any transitions or filters caused big gray boxes to appear on the video. Sound also fell. I was able to make it work - but the exported file retained the boxes at different places each time I exported.
Now the file doesn't open at all and it crashes FCP. All other files on my system still open and export fine except for this one.
My question is 1. whether the change of tape brand can cause the import to go haywire.
and 2. Is there any way I can open this file? I trashed preferences and restarted with no luck.
Any suggestions ar emuch appreciated. Thanks!
    Dual 1.8 GHz G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8) 4 GB DDR SDRAM

I've never had the same experience, so this is purely speculation.
Changing brands used in the same camcorder has been reported as the cause of recording & playback problems. But, since the playback from the DSR was okay, I'm guessing the brand isn't the problem.
Could be the camcorder settings don't match your FCP settings?
What if you copied the Fuji tape to Sony tape in your camcorder. That way you would have control of both the tape and the camcorder settings.

  • XML Crashing FCP while importing.  Magic Bullet Looks could be the problem

    Hi All,
    Need a little help here.
I am using FCP 6.0.5 on a power mac G-5.
I am trying to open an XML which was exported out of FCP 7 as a version 4 XML.
Magic Bullet Looks is being used on the project, and I think this is were the problem is.
when importing the XML it crashes FCP when I select the Include Video/Audio Effects.
When I import the XML without this option selected it opens fine.
I have MB Looks Installed on machine, so the Plugins are there.
Just wanted to see if anyone has dealt with this issue or might have any insight to the problem.
I can post the Crash info on the specific thread if that can help.
    Thanks!

Couldn't agree more Jim - hence why I'm not using Snow Leopard yet as I had a nightmare in the early adoption of an older operating system. As for MBL, there seem to be many using it without problems so I don't think it's an issue with the product per say and it really is a very good plug-in. (That view will change to excellent once the problems go away) I just need to get to the bottom of which square peg is destined for which round hole and I'm hopeful that all will be well. I've also submitted a support question to Magic Bullet so will update if I get a solution. I like the CleanApp idea. I'll try that as well. (and I may even give Snow Leopard a go!)

  • FCP Project Import

FCP Project Files do not import at all! My scenario is as follows:
I create a Final Cut Pro Project file (.fcp) and try to upload it into FCSVR by dragging the file into the FCSVR window while logged in as admin.
This throws an error that says, “Unable to analyse project – invalid format.”
Then I export the project as an XML file and upload it the same way and receive no error.
All of the files are uploaded beautifully as well as the .xml file; however, when I check out the .xml file, it is copied to the folder of my choice as a .fcp file! At least that is the extension that shows up. I can tell it is really still an .xml file because when I open it with FCP it converts it to a .fcp file (FCP informs me of this on execution).
After I make changes to the file and save it (using Command+s), I go back to FCSVR and try to check in the file I checked out. The file checks in just fine.
However, when I try to check the file out again, I get a different error message that says, “Final Cut Pro Download failed (Project File not found).”
I have checked the device, which is on my Xsan volume, and the file is there. Actually, so is the .xml file.
The only work around I have found is instead of just saving my changes with Command+s, I can export another .xml with the same name as the original and upload that file into FCSVR, but that will overwrite the file already there, making version tracking unavailable.
I have seen this problem in a few places and I wonder if it is around the board, or if it is just on some installs. Any ideas or fixes would be awesome.

Thanks for your reply. I apologize because I already received an answer and it worked! Here is Matt Geller's response from my post on Xsanity:
First - checking in the xml is confusing the process. Version 1.1 of FC Server expects to receive an actual .fcp binary during upload. It does the same when checking out: it delivers an .fcp binary.
I have a hunch that you are getting the invalid format error because your Final Cut Server itself is not logged in as the admin user. If this is the case, keep the machine logged in and see if you still have the issue with the original .fcp binary.
Sure enough, once I logged in as admin, it worked beautifully.

  • FCP EDL Import from Color Misbehaving

I have successfully imported an EDL/Master file (from FCP)into Color, it razored automagically. I've done the grading and rendered out the graded media. Now how do I get the rendered media, with each shot in it's own folder, back into a timeline for output? I tried the export edl command in Color, but when importing it into FCP I get one long clip with a few markers that indicate errors (no duration)and media offline??? Tried an XML export/import with no success. Thoughts?
    Thanks

    Automagic razoring in Color?

I don't know why the XML won't work. You probably should check out the manual on the EDL workflow - which might lock you into that workflow in FCP. But I'm not sure and might be wrong.
However, all is not lost. Your clips when rendered are numbered in the order they appear on the timeline. So... write yourself a quick and dirty Automater script to pull out all the .mov files and drop them into a new folder. Import that folder into FCP. Select all clips and drop them into the timeline and they should sort automagically, head to tail in number order.

  • FCP 7 Optimized Codec Performance

Cramming for that FCP 7 recert and going through a list of new features. One I am trying to chase down is "Optimized Codec Performance", that is briefly described as rendering XDCAM HD, EX, HDV and XDCAM HD422 faster. The description further goes on to say that you have greater freedom creating complex multilayers. The question is, is that native or that all of them are now supported as Pro Res render options in sequence settings?

I think all it means is that rendering is now faster, so having a lot of video tracks is less of a hassle in terms of waiting for re-renders.
Doubt if it's anything to do with ProRes.

  • Popping sounds in FCP when importing from itunes

I'm trying to use a piece of music dwonloaded from itunes. listening ot the piece on itunes there are no "pops" or crackle sounds. Once imported to FCP and incerted inot my track it has annoying pops, suttle but they are there. How can I fix this?

Music purchased through iTunes won't work in FCP. Because of rights issues.  You need to get the rights to use the music in certain projects.  While your project might not be for broadcast, or displaying on the web, Apple assumes it is.
You cannot just use any old music you want in projects you put up on the web and on TV. You need to get the rights to it.  YouTube will even pull your video down if it finds popular music and detects rights issues. If this is a family video not aimed at the web, well...that's different.  But still Apple prevents working imports due to the fact that FCP is PROFESSIONAL software, and most uses for it is for broadcast and web.

  • Phostoshop CS4 + FCP Integration - Importing .TIF files...

I made the upgrade to CS4 and am trying to pull in some .TIF files that I had either created, converted, or were sent to me. THe originals are coming either from Adobe Illustrator CS3 files or Adobe Photoshop CS3 files.
For whatever reason I cannot get Final Cut to accept my .TIF files. I have tried adjusting several settings and keep messing with it, but it keeps giving me the error message:
File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown
What should the correct color settings be in Potoshop in order to correctly import .TIFs? Should I keep the embedded color profiles? Any other settings that I should tweak in order to properly pull these in. Does this have anything to do with my recent switch from CS3 to CS4?
My FCP project is HDV1080p30 BTW, if that makes any difference.
    THANKS!

Could it be that the .PSD files were created in earlier versions of Photoshop?
I would have thought that a newer version can always open files created in an earlier version. Problems typically occur, trying to open files created in a newer version on older software, due to new features not being present.
If you dont have to animate individual layers, perhaps using the "Merge Visible..." (if you have transparency) or "Flatten Image" commands in Photoshop could be used.
Could it be that the new version of PS somehow handles layers differently? Perhaps your files were updated to that format when you opened them.

  • FCP AVCHD import video too fast, audio off - help please

Recently imported video from my Panasonic AVCHD HDC-SD100 into FCP, first time. I used Log and Transfer and I got all my clips imported. In the Log and Transfer window playback looks great, sounds great, everything fine - but once transferred to my browser my video is super fast making the audio and video out of sync, the audio is normal. I had to slow down my video speed to about 66% in order for it to match up (not perfect, but it works). Anyone have an idea of why my video is importing from Log and Transfer sped up? I would appreciate anyone's feedback. Thanks.

    hi.
Sorry I can't help solving your problem, but you may do mine!
    tecs:
    FCP 5.0.4
    Panasonic HDC-SD100
    mac as seen below
I do not get it done, to import vids at any way.
Log and Transfer window tells me that there's no communication.
but even befor that, I get a error message, saying the FCP can't load the "video-deck" (german! sorry!).
    so anyway....
can you tell me what your settings are? like the exact configuration or the sequenze-, recording- and the device control-settings!!!
I also couldn't figuare-out the difference of the camera-mod (when connecting to the mac) "PC connect" or "AVCHD connect". doesn't seem to make any difference in my case.
So sorry for my spelling (no native!) and for the nubi-questions. but thats what I am...
    Your help would be great!
    Thanks!
    d.

  • FCP not importing mp4...

When I try to import a QuickTime mp4 file into FCHD I get a message which states, "File Error: 1 file recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown." and that's it!
But the same file imports fine into iMovie HD with the audio and everything. What gives?
Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

FCP is designed to handle Broadcast and above standards. Mp4 is not.
If you need to continue working with these types of files stick with iMovie or buy QTPro and convert it to DV.
Also, read the manual and do the tutorials... you're in for a long road.

  • Best way to downconvert from FCP to import to a SD DVD SP project?

    hi-
I am working with 1080/80i HDV footage in FCP and would like to create an SD DVD in DVDSP. SO, I need to downconvert my HDV sequence to a lower-res--correct?
I have talked to and/or read stuff from 10 different people today about this and have received 10 different answers. Can anyone chime in and shed some light?
    Should I:
-create a new sequence in FCP and copy/paste my old stuff into it and render out? if so, what res should the sequence be?
-export straight from FCP to a lower res quicktime?
-dump back to tape and then re-import at a lower res?
-export at hi-res and then use some compression software to convert it to low?
    any help would be appreciated--gracias

thanks--i tested that way and it seemed to work well. it takes a while though--15 hours for the whole 45 minute show. the good news is that when you do it that way your chapter markers come through.
    thanks for the help.
