FCP, Photoshop and blend mode.

Hi all!
Created a photoshop file. One layer contains a picture which I applied the blend mode luminosity applied, yet when I bring it into FCP the mode is lost.
I have a transparent layer under this layer and still no luck. All other effects are working except this one.
Any ideas?

FCP cannot read Photoshop's blend modes if you're importing a layered PSD file.
You need to import a merged file (a single layer PSD or TIFF, for instance) with transparency preserved.

  • Saving png w/transparent background and blend mode

I have a logo that I want to layer on top of a background image that will together act as the header for the webpage.
The easy thing to do would be to create an image on photoshop layering the background image and the logo, with the logo blend effect, and then save and upload. Problem is that I want the background image to resize with the browser window - without resizing the logo.
Therefore, I figured I could save the background image and logo files separately, and then layer them using HTML and CSS. For it to look comparable therefore, I want to keep the background of the logo transparent. I would also like to set the blend mode of the logo to linear dodge (add) - so that whatever size the background image is scaled to, the logo remains the same size, with the same blend mode. The problem is that when I save the logo as a transparent png file (24-bit), it is not maintaining the blend mode.
    What am I doing wrong?
    (Photoshop CS4)

Blending modes are algorithms in the rendering device/ application (Photoshop, other image editors, browsers), not data. there is no way to retain them just by saving to a specific format. if you dumbed down PS and removed all belnding modes, it would behave just the same as your browser.

  • Can I sample a layer's "true" color despite its opacity and blend mode?

I'm doing some painting with a lot of layers set to different blend modes.  I find that every time I want to paint on one of these layers, I have to go to that layer, set the opacity back to 100, change the blend mode back to "normal" sample the color, then change everything back and continue painting.  I realize I can save a swatch for the color, but it can get confusing when you're using subtle color differences on multiple layers.  It seems like there should be a modifier key to the tool that samples the layers "true" color discarding opacity and blend mode.  Does this exist?  Thanks!

Perfect!  This is exactly what I'm looking for chris....I don't suppose there's any way to toggle the tool's "current layer/all layers" functionality on the fly so i don't have to go to the tool and select which mode I"m in each time is there?  I usually access this tool by just hitting "option" while using a brush.  Would be cool if i could set "Option + shift" to use the eyedropper in "current layer" mode.  Thanks for the speedy reply!

  • Spatial conform and blend mode; what does it mean and wherefore?

I can't find a explination in the help...: spatial conform and blend mode; what does it mean and when do you use it because there is e a big numbre of choises.
Ican't find a explination in the help...
    Thanks!

Spatial conform is where you decide whether you want the (oversize) image to fit the video display size, or to be full-size (allowing room for animation).
Blend modes - far too many to describe here even if I knew them all, but Overlay is a nice one to start with. They specify how you want a layer to blend with the one below it. Try them and see what they do.

  • Smart Object and blend mode issue

I have an object that I moved from another image and needed to resize. The object is an image of a bottle and glass, with both the bottle and glass having reflections from their base. They both also have some layer masks with the reflections. I grouped the glass and bottle and created a smat object before the move to the new file). Anyway everything worked fine, except the reflections are much stonger in the new file (they are sitting over the same colored backgrond as in the original. If I open up the smart object and put a background behind the images  and the reflections (background is transparent)everthing looks as they should. The reflections have a blend mode of multiply).
So why does the smart object not render the reflections properly (without lowering the opacity more within the smart object group) they appear almost at 100% in the new file. Any suggestions?
Can't post the files as this happened at work.
    Thanks
    Jeff

Anything to do with soft proofing?  Does the new document have the same colour space as the original?

  • Masks and blend modes

    Hello all,
So, I'm creating a chest caption and I wanted to have the text on a semi-transparent rectangle background. I also want to use a soft light blend mode on the rectangle. Now, I also want the rectangle to quickly appear from nowhere so I am using a mask, which I then move quickly off to the right of the screen thus revealing the rectangle.
Now, once I have added this mask, I don't seem to be able to use any different blend modes, just the normal one. I've tried changing it and it has no effect.
Can anyone tell me why this might be, and if there is a way around it?
    Thanks
    Chris

Try changing the blend mode of the group containing the rectangle and the mask. The elements below the rectangle of course need to be in a different group below this group.

  • Wmode transparent and blend mode problem

    Dear all,
I'm stuck with this problem so far, got headache after searching many days on google without solution. Our designer using blend mode: screen (in flash) for some movies and the flash's transparent to save the file size display and then ưe are using html background. All'r working fine for wmode transparent but in Internet Explorer, it's not working to display the blend mode and appear the black background. You can check the image below to see what happen:
Loading the movies within blend mode screen
Transparent's working fine with the normal transparent
Test blend mode with opaque wmode to see how it will display
I've tested with IE7, 8, 9. I'm using window 7 Ultimate, 64bit, Flash player latest version. (And my clients, friends, also got that issues when seeing it with IE).
    My embed code:
    <object width="1000" height="600" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" >
    <param value="high" name="quality"></param>
    <param value="intro.swf" name="movie"></param>
    <param value="opaque" name="wmode"></param>
    <embed width="1000" height="600" wmode="opaque" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash" quality="high" src="intro.swf">
    </object>
We can solve it manually that put the image background into the flash but it's not the good way to do it in our modern web industry.
    Any solution?

dont why i can't submit in the bugbase, it's just hanged out though i submit all the required information T.T
Update: the bug only with IE9. (i concerned IE 7, 8 because i've tested it by IE9 development tool, not real IE 7, 8). Today i've tried testing with real IE7, 8 and it's working fine.

  • How to keep Opacity and Blending Mode values

    Hi!
I'm working with shades/highlights and since I have to make many shapes with the same values of color, opacity, blending mode, I wonder how can I make it to keep them configured, so I dont have to go to each path and change the values every time. The only value that stays is the color, but for example, the opacity changes everytime I start a new shape with the pen tool, and as I said, I'm working with shadings for a portrait, so I have to make lots of shapes with the same characteristics. Does somebody know a way to set these values and keep them "by default" so to say??
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you, it's just what I was looking for!

  • Cache as bitmap and blend modes problems

    Hello,
I have little problem here. Let's say I have movieClip mc1 and inside it has movieClip mc2 (nested). If I set any blend mode to mc2 and then turn cacheAsBitmap on for mc1, the blend mode is not displayed at all. I have noticed this problem in flash cs3 as well as cs4. Is there any workaround how to make this work?

    regarding your second question:
-according to the docs, yes it should be the same. but according to some users opinion here on the forum, no. Aparently there is a performance difference if you set the cacheAsBitmap property on a Bitmap.

  • Illustrator and Blending modes. Colour managing question.

Let's say i make 2 circles with 2 different fill colours. Then i intersect and blend them with multiply. Is there any way to save the colour resulting on the intersection?
    Thank you!

    Duplicate the 2 circles.
    Object > Flatten Transparency.
Select the intersection colour and add it to your swatches.
Get rid of the duplicated objects.

  • Blend Mode Selection in Photoshop minor difference between platforms

Guys you REALLY need to do something about this asap. I don't know if it's a mac/pc problem or if it's a CS6 problem. I have been working with photoshop on PC for the past 9 years or so. I recently had to switch to CS6 on Mac.
I can no longer place my cursor in the blend modes field and use arrow keys to quickly toggle through them to find the ideal mode. I used to be able to preview 15 blend modes in just 5-6 seconds and land on the ideal mode... and get on with my project. NOW i have to click this button and click again on each blend mode... lengthening my process by up to 2 minutes. This is an ENORMOUS problem for me as choosing blend modes is critical in my day to day design work.
See the menu right next to it where you can type in the opacity? I can put my cursor in there and use arrow keys to adjust values. Blend mode NEEDS to work this way too. And this is on a mac. You simply HAVE to do something here. productivity impacted severely.
Also.. this problem exists in After Effects CS5 on pc. Let's get it fixed there too. I will hand-write you a letter of praise and send flowers if you can do this.

That could be because some readers are blinded by the white background and shiny badge of MVP and Staff posts.
If not, then it's strange that nobody is interested in working out why the OP has the problem or how to restore correct behaviour to his/her installation.
I can tell you the rationale behind my post, if it helps. The original poster's real goal was to "...preview 15 blend modes in just 5-6 seconds and land on the ideal mode... and get on with my project."
On my Mac, I can certainly click in the menu and use the arrow key to go up and down, as conroy said. But what that does not do is apply the blend mode, unless I also press Return. But pressing Return kicks you out of the menu so you have to start the click/arrow/Enter cycle again, which is a long way just to try the next blend mode. So while the superficial reading of the problem says "I can arrow key through the menu, problem solved," it doesn't solve the real goal of "preview 15 blend modes in just 5-6 seconds."
But Shift+ can, because it saves so many steps over click/arrow/Enter (and because the native OS X pop-up can't do any better). So Shift+ was a more appropriate solution, and the original poster already said it solves their problem.
If you read the original post, I think what is really going on is a Windows/Mac switcher issue, not an unfixed bug. Windows and Mac pop-up menus work very differently. In Windows, you can enter text into a drop-down list directly and up/down arrow through the list without the menu actually popping up. (For a Mac example, see the Type tool Font and Size menus in the Options bar in Photoshop, which I assume are custom-coded. Compare to the Font and Size menus in Apple Pages or Keynote.) He switches to Mac Photoshop, and Blend Modes menu doesn't work that way. It might never work that way, because native Mac pop-up menus are much more mouse-oriented.
Now, if there is a verifiable bug in the menu, Adobe should fix it. You might want to make sure it's listed at the Photoshop Feedback site, and add it if it isn't there.

  • Photoshop Help Video - Can't Locate Katrin Eismann Blending Modes Video

I bookmarked a Katrin Eismann video on blending modes on May 7, 2010. I am trying to locate that video now, so far without success.
    Here's the former link: http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/video_workshop/?id=vid0012
As I recall, she showed a great example of how to isolate just a portion of a night time scene. As best I recall, the trees were colorful while everything else was black and white.
I have been hunting for a while without success. I believe it used to be associated with the help file. In fact it still is. If you search on Adobe's help for "blending modes" your first link is likely:
    Photoshop Help | Blending modes
And as you work your way though the discussion, you find this:
These examples show the result of painting part of the image’s face using each blending mode.
For a video on blending modes, see www.adobe.com/go/vid0012.
Does anyone know how I can locate this video?

This same non-existent link is still listed on various Adobe web pages, but alas, the page with the video no longer exists. This is obviously an error on the part of the (huge) Adobe website.
The best thing to do is to submit a bug report, and hope they fix it:

  • BUG: Channel-based blend modes in FW CS5 & CS6

I've observed problems with some of the blend modes in Fireworks CS5 and CS6. Several are definitely broken—most likely a by-product of changes introduced in CS5, which attempted to match some of Photoshop's blend mode behaviors (for Hue, Saturation, Color and Luminosity).
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/logged_in/bbowman_fwcs5.html
The broken blend modes are the channel-based blend modes: Red, Green, and Blue. These have no counterpart in Photoshop, and yet no longer function properly.
To illustrate the problem, I've created a simple test graphic: three white squares, three black squares, three bitmaps, and three colored squares (red, green, and blue).
Now I'll add a black background to the canvas and apply a different channel-based blend mode—Red, Green, and Blue—to each object in its respective group. Here's the correct result, in Fireworks 8:
As you can see, each object appears to be the same color as its applied blend mode. A white rectangle with a Red blend mode becomes red, with a Green blend mode becomes green, and with a Blue blend mode becomes blue.
The way it works is this: The composite image adopts the selected channel of the object and combines it with the remaining channels of the canvas (or objects) below. For example, consider the white rectangle with a Red blend mode. The rectangle's Red channel (R:255) should be combined with the remaining channels of the canvas below (G:0,B:0) to create a composite with the appearance of red (R:255,G:0,B:0).
Now here's the same graphic as it appears in both Fireworks CS5 and CS6:
As you can see, there's no sense to this result. The Red blend mode produces Green, the Green blend mode produces Red, and the Blue blend mode produces invisibility. I simply cannot explain the outcome. These blend modes have been rendered useless and unintelligible in CS5 and CS6.
The reason for my concern here is that, just over a year ago, I wrote a series of command scripts based on these blend modes as they existed Fireworks 8. Without these blend modes, my scripts cannot function.
Assuming there are updates forthcoming for Fireworks CS6, I'm hoping there's a chance that this might still be fixed (if not for CS5, as well). Here's the bug report I've submitted regarding this issue:
    Product name: Fireworks
    Product Version: 11.1.0.205 (CS5.1)/12.0.0.236 (CS6)
    Product Language: English
    Your operating system: OS 10.6.8
    ******BUG******
Concise problem statement: Channel-based blend modes (Red, Green, and Blue) are broken in Fireworks CS6 and CS5.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. Set canvas to black.
    2. Draw 3 white rectangles of any size.
    3. Set blend mode of 1st rectangle to Red, 2nd rectangle to Green, 3rd rectangle to Blue.
Results: 1st rectangle appears Green (instead of Red). 2nd rectangle appears Red (instead of Green). 3rd rectangle becomes invisible (instead of Blue).
Expected results: Each rectangle should appear to be the same color as its applied blend mode, as the composite adopts the selected channel of the object and combines it with the remaining channels of the canvas (or objects) below.
In the preceding example, the black canvas contains no channel information (R:0,G:0,B:0) while the white rectangles contain information in all 3 channels (R:255,G:255,B:255). When a Red blend mode is applied to a white rectangle, the object's Red channel (R:255) should be combined with the remaining channels of the canvas below (G:0,B:0) to create a composite with the appearance of red (R:255,G:0,B:0).
Most likely, this bug was introduced in CS5, which included modifications to Hue, Saturation, Color and Luminosity blend modes (to match Photoshop). For comparison, proper RGB blend mode behavior was observed in Fireworks 8.
For more information about this bug, please see the following post: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1209542

I haven't noticed changes in the way the blend modes work.
It's possible you have a specific problem on your system, or you have an image with a color space that uses a different gamma than you're used to working in.  In the latter case, the math could be the same but if the representation of the colors is changed (which is what the color profile defines) you could get a radically different looking result.
Maybe it would be useful to post some screen grabs, and ideally it would be great if you could post a copy of a PSD file that demonstrates the problem (i.e., looks different when opened in an older version of Photoshop than in Photoshop CS6).
EDIT:  Looks like I was too late in answering; I was distracted after typing and before posting.

  • APPLY IMAGE vs. BLENDING MODES.

    Hey guys,
I am trying to understand the difference between apply image and blending modes as I realise my grasp of it is weak.
Why blending the duplicate of an image with the original, with a given blending mode, does not give the same result as, Applying the duplicate of an image to the original with the same given blending mode in Apply Image?
What I have done in Photoshop, to be clearer :
    1. one image ("background image"), duplicated it ("copy1") and set the blending mode ot linear light (for example). I get the result 1.
    2. I selected "background image" and applied it in linear light (for this example), with Apply Image, to the "copy1" image. Result is different.
Can you people tell me why? Where is my thought process faulty? thanks.

    DUH moment for me today..
As Sudarshan requested, I was going to do the screen shots of my results, so I did it again and this time got the same result for both situation (apply image and blending the two layers with the same blending mode).
I don't know what the heck I did the first time round, but surely something wrong.. Sorry for the confusion guys.
To answer the questions though : Conroy, I had four layers (four copies of the same image) and grouped them in two different comps (one blend mode and other apply image) for comparison, switching from one to the other.
RKelly : it was an exact copy of the original, so twice the same picture.
As to not make this post a blank shot, I would like to get back to my original question. Blending an image to another with Apply Image OR blending two layers with the blending mode options in the layers palette are two similar processes, is that right?
And add a question, while I am here. Still with Apply Image, will adding an image (A) to another (B) (with Add blend mode) be accurately the same as substracting the invert of A from B (with the substract blend mode)?

  • Java2D advanced blending mode (multiply, overlay, divide, ...)

    Hi everyone,
on a RFE I voted for, I read that new blending mode such as multiply, overlay, divide, lighten, etc will be optimized with Dolphin.
I am developing a full-screen java game and the AlphaComposite is sometime not sufficient to make the effects I need. I have been implementing the blending modes I need manually but this seriously decrease my frame rate. I would love seeing these "standard Photoshop/GImp" blending modes added to the optimization pipeline.
The proposal was to make use of pixel shaders leverage to achieve this in DOlphin.
Any news that could make me happy ?
    Vince.

Noone has any info on the implementation of the advanced blending mode in Dolphin ?
For those who are interested in this topic, have a look at Romain Guy's Weblog, http://www.jroller.com/page/gfx?entry=new_blendings_modes_for_java2d
My concern is that this wonderful implementation by Romain Guy is not going to wor for me since my game fps would be seriously decrease if I break the hardware optimization pipelines. The openGL and DirectDraw pipelines are working really well and new optimized blending modes would definitely be valuable.
    Vince.
