Fcp project file shown as exec

i have a project edited from a friend with fcp 7, he gave me all of the files so i can edit it. i use fcp X, but it shows the fcp project file as an exec file. (executable)
no f*cking chance to open it.
i dont get it! of course you should open an fcp 7 project file with fcp X, or i am wrong??
can anyone help?

YYou're wrong. The project formats are completely different. You need to open the fcp7 project in the application and export an XML file. You then need to use the utility 7toX to convert the fcp7 XML into an XML version that can be read by FCPX. That converted XML can be imported into FCPX to create the project and its sequences in X.

Unable to open PC-backed up FCP project files

Apparently, I made a mistake copying my FCP project files to my PC via network and backing them up on CD-ROM.
When I copy them back to the MAC, they wont open!
I performed an "Apple-I" on one of the files and selected open with FCP, but it doesn't!
I did a quick test:
I copied one of my existing project files to PC, renamed it and copied it back to the MAC. The icon of the one copied back changed to "Unix Exec". But when I compared the two files contents, they're the same!
Is there some obscure way to allow my PC-backed up project files to work again?

What you need to do is give back the Mac OS resource data to the file (that's what got stripped when it went through the PC environment) ... or more specifically, you're reassigning a Type and Creator code.
Use a utility such as "Type Changer" (it's freeware): http://www.marcrespass.com/software/Type%20Changer.zip
the Type for a project file should be "FCPF" and the Creator "KeyG" (short for "Key Grip" which was the original name for FCP)

FCP Project file won't open

Hello,
An FCP project file I worked on this past Friday suddenly won't open. When I try it immediately gives the helpful "general error" message. I tried opening the autosave files as well, with no luck. I tried renaming the project file and manually adding the .fcp extension, but still nothing. I'm not sure why it's doing this, since nothing unusual happened in the last few days. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Also, does anybody know where I can purchase an unused version of the FCP 5.0 bundle? I can't upgrade because of OS and processor restrictions on my old G5. And I can't buy a newer mac right now. All of my related FCP programs are starting to act buggy, and I don't have the install cds anymore. Any ideas?

Huh? According to the requirements for FCP 6, it needs A Macintosh computer with a 1.25GHz or faster PowerPC G4, PowerPC G5, Intel Core Duo, or Intel Xeon processor and Mac OS X v10.4.11 or Mac OS X v10.5.5 or later. How does your computer not fall into this range?

HELP! Can't Open a FCP project File, "General Error 41"

Trying to open a project for a Good guy
over a barrel, using FCStudio /FCP 5.1 FCP opens,
then says "General Error 41". All I need to
do is create an SD Version DVD, But first

Since this is your friend's FCP project file, check to see if he/she has version 5.1.1 or above.
I think the project file is from a newer format.
For some reason, the bump from FCP 5.1 to 5.1.x was big enough to require the project files to be a different format.
If that is the case, (and if you want to take the chance on the unknown,) you can upgrade to the version your friend has (or above.)
Make sure you really want to upgrade and are prepared for all the potential problems!
Dual G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9)

FCS is only deleting my FCP project file and not linked assets. please help.

When deleting a FCP project from FCS it does not give me the option to delete all linked media. It only deletes the FCP project file leaving me to delete all related media manually. In the user guide it says it should give me the option to delete the project and all files automatically but this doesn't happen on our system. Does anyone know why? and how to turn this function on?

A bug that will never be fixed. You have to delete the associated assets manually.

FCP Project Files are all "invalid format?"

I tried uploading many FCP Project Files with no success. All Project Files run fine in Final Cut Pro.
Once the upload process begins, the "Jobs in Progress" status spins for about a minute or so. At this point a red exclamation point appears, then a popup window that states:
"Unable to Analyze Project ... Invalid Format."
The project file makes it's way into FC Server as a listed asset, however when I choose to "get Info" and do a Search for the associated project files, nothing shows up. The manual mentions or recommends to use file extensions, and I have.
I read Final Cut Server is supposed to automatically recognize all FCP Project file's associated media. In fact they don't need to be packaged in a folder, etc.
Lastly I created a brand new FCP Project with a single video clip and a single audio clip after I installed the new ProApps Update. Still no luck.
Is anyone experiencing the same issue?

I experience the exact same issue, yesterday and thought that after Apple released the following update

that things may work, but they still dont.
My guess, is that there may be a version update to Final Cut 6.0.3 to maybe Final Cut 6.5 or something that will allow this direct integration with Final Cut Server. However, note, I was able to success import Final Cut Project exported as Final Cut XML files. I tried this because this was traditionally how it work when FCServer was the Artbox product. My guess is because the Final Cut Studio and Final Cut Server engineers in Apple really don't speak direct to each other, FCServer was realeased with this bug.

or we should open , work and save our FCP project file from local drive only .
Is there is risk of corrupting xsan volume if we open FCP project file placed in xsan volume .

Opening a file twice is a indeed a problem. To prevent this, and for numerous other reasons, we use Open Directory. In OD you can configure that a user can login just once (concurrently).
In old versions of xsan it was not recommended to put project files on xsan, but nowadays it works fine.
Putting projectfiles on a san has the advantage that a user can work on any client. If this is not important in your environment these files can be stored locally.

FCP Project File & other Editing programs

G'day, I apologise if this has been brought up earlier but this is a question I've had for a while.
FCP projects obviously maintain the file extension .fcp for the file projects.
My question is can FCP open, use and edit other file projects such as those from Windows Movie Maker or Vegas which have extensions .wmm and .veg respectively?
And can those other editing programs such as Vegas open and operate FCP project files?
I'm currently operating from a university computer with the latest FCP software (FCP5) available.
All answers are greatly appreciated.

I've never tried, but I'm 99% sure you cannot simply open a project file from another program, and have FCP read it, and vice versa. Such things are not common practice among most applications (as it would require Apple licensing proprietary technology to competitors).
There are however, ways to do this. There is a plugin for Final Cut called Automatic Duck that provides import options between pro apps like FCP, Avid, After Effects, Combustion, etc. However, its not free, and would most likey not support an app like Vegas, and certainly not Windows Movie Maker.
The other way to do it is to utilize an Edit Decision List (EDL), which is a textual summary of all your edits and sequences in the project, and importing this along with your clips may allow another program to rebuild your project. I've never really needed to use one before, but I know FCP is capable of importing and exporting them (I would assume it uses XML). I have no idea how well EDLs are supported in Vegas, and I would assume that there is no support for them in WMM.

I did a long render last overnight on my MacBook Pro (2007 Generation) and then brought the files to a school computer (MacPro OS 10.6.4) and now the FCP project files are simply 'documents' and cannot be opened with FCP. Am I doomed?

FCP project file crashes before even opening

I am working for a client and using there system which is a G4 iMac running OS 10.4.11 and I am editing using FCP Studio 2, FCP 6.0.4
The quick is I am trying to open a project which recently has been taking forever to load and just recently crashes Final Cut Pro once it opens, which prevents me to work on it further, I was able to open it once long enough to copy the files into a new FCP project but after I saved and restarted FCP from the new Project folder I got the same result. I have tried going back into my auto save vault and open old files but I get the same result. I am able to open other FCP projects so I don't think it is a problem with FCP but more so with this particular file. ok so maybe that was the long version, please can any one offer any solutions or is all lost?

It slow t load while “Reading Project” this is a photo based project actually its all photos. a time laps of over a month or more taking pictures everyday at approx 1 pic every hour or 30 mins. so I have alot of photos in the FCP project file. this i can understand for the slow loading time. but what is causing the FCP project to crash so often? i did try emptying the preference files but still no luck.

CF data file missing on FCP project files

Every time I open a saved project file on Final Cut Pro, it says CF data file missing on my FCP project files. Files seem to be in constant frames folder but all black and not highlighting. suggestions?
I was saving things on a MyBook studio external HD. I think earlier as I was working or saving on the external HD it disconnected.
But shouldn't it have all my files still?
I still see all my project files and capture scratches.
Any help or suggestions please?

When I opened the FCP project. It says " CF data file missing CF+ filename here"
So I looked in my Render Files> Constant Frames folder and the files are in there. I tried to open the movie files and play them. When played, they all play back a black screen/nothing in the file? And some have a blue screen that says" unrendered".
So I try to search for the file to connect it back to the project, but when I go to th folder and try to select it. It isn't highlighted, so I can't select it. So they aren't missing.
So I have to press cancel. It seems like I'm not able to edit or work on the FCP project until I have those files connected.

I updated to Mavericks and realized my FCP project files are not there? Help!

Someone please help. I had built a new video project the other day and everythying worked fine. However I needed to edit an older job and and went to my library and when I click on the Event, my source files are there but no my project files. On the job I just did recently those projects files are there. I went to my folders where my FCP event and project files are and tried to open one of the "backup" files and that didn't work.

I'm assuming you've updated your projects and events. If you haven't, you should.
If the are updated, you should have an event named Updated Projects. Look in there.
You should access your projects through the app, not the Finder. There is no no longer any such thing as fcpproject files in the new library model.

FCP Project File created in 5.1.4 won't open in 5.1

Hi All,
I recently had to replace my hard drive. Things could have been worse, but thankfully I saved a copy of a major project to another drive. I successfully reinstalled all my original software including FCP 5.1. The problem is that I was running 5.1.4 for this project and now the file won't open. (General Error 41)
Is it still possible to find a software update for Version 5.1.4?
I have searched the forum and I suspect that the answer is no. It seems that version 6 is the only version available now.
My back-up plan is to find someone in my area who has the 5.1.4 version to open my project file, then export as an xml file. Then I plan to import the xml into my system with the version of 5.1 and I'm back to work.
It's a big project for us and I could really use some reassurance. Thanks everyone.

Can't open fcp project file - fcp not responding

starts to open project but gets to 23% and freezes fcp...project is being stored on a lacie 250gig protable hd with firewire. never had this issue after tons of work. tried going to a autosave version but tried several and they freeze up fcp
any ideas short of moving all the media to another drive and starting a new project (I was just about to start cutting this project today).

Welcome to the forum!
Post the version of FCP you're running.
Try opening a new project file, then importing the captured clips into it... might fix this... If you trash your preferences for FCP found in the user/library/preferences/FCP User data folder, you can just click on the application and it won't try to open the last project file.
Can you open earlier project files OK?

FCP Project Files

We just purchased a MacBookPro15 and getting ready to pick up FCP Studio 2 and have a question about "project files."
On one of our Avid NLE (that we will be phasing out) one sets up a project folder either on a media drive or an external drive (just NOT on the OS drive) and all files including the Avid icon .exe file resides in that folder or a series of sub-folders that the software creates.
On another Avid NLE (that we will be slower to phase out but still will) a folder is used for the project file that is only an execute file (small in size) and is located on the OS drive while all media and other support files and sub-folder files that the software creates can be placed anywhere but best NOT on the OS drive.
Does FCP work like one of these or is there some other methodology? Our concern is that we want to keep as much off the OS drive as possible since we are going to have a Windows partition for the moment (needed for two of our other applications) and thus if FCP works like the latter where only the project name and .exe icon resides then the OS would be fine but if FCP wants to put media there then we have to see how we will get FCP to recognize other location for the project.
Hope I've explained this right and if anyone has Edius out there also in addition to FCP, you understand what I'm referring to - I think ?? :o)

Thanks Kevan and Shane for this fine insight to FCP filing and file structure. This helps me immensely. I have strugged with trying FC out for the last year and often neared the edge of the cliff to make the plunge but held back because of my "rotten apple" reserves. However, I have struggled with complictions that at time over the last two years that nearly put me out of business when one of Avid's updates locked all my editing down on three stations for nearly 3 and half months. I was fortunate enough to get an update that didn't work on some computer configs and until we figured them all out a quarter of year later, we were locked up and unable to deliver. Fortunately for us, we had a lot of wonderful clients who were understanding, tolerant, and patient (even maybe abnormal) and survived. But, all I kept seeing was Apple/Mac guys getting resolves to issues with P2 and drivers and support and all I seen was more heartache which drew me to this conclusion . . better get on board with something that works before the next bomb arrives; then, last fall Avid announced that they were no longer going to support either of our Avid products by the end of this year and thus . . easy decision so long as these questions were successful.
Thanks again. I can't wait to get my hands on FCP :o) BTW, I like the MacBookPro so much we're talking with our Mac retailer about leasing a MacPro with quad core . . WOW! If we get that puppy (or would that be a gorilla?) we'll really do all our serious editing on it but we would like to have the capabilities to do some mobile editing which we will now have. :o)
